That's awesome Scott! And yes you are 100% correct "You have to save money where you can".. Otherwise tying can get expensive. However, still worth the expense when you catch fish in bugs you've tied.👌 Thank you for sharing and have a wonderful day! Talk soon, Steve
This video was absolutely amazing. I’m gonna go out and buy every color of acrylic yarn. I could find and make up 100 different boxes. It seems like it’s so much fun to do that. You just can’t stop it’s like eating potato chips just can’t have one. Thank you for your techniques and your video.
Glad u enjoyed it and thank you so much for the kind words! One thing I should mention. When you mix your pieces of yarn etc start with short bursts, running the grinder to long can start a friction fire. So be careful and have fun! Sincerely appreciate you and tight lines! That grinder works best in short bursts. I mostly use dubbing with real fur added now. I bought a cheap rechargeable beard trimmer to trim fur off the hides, faces, feet, whatever you have. And I can set it to cut the part I want. Like the top half of the hair. Then brush out the underfur and use that too. Or cdc trimmings, or marabou scrap.
Yeah I kinda found that out after my buddies almost caught fire! Haha.. Now I just do short bursts like you said. I love the fur clipper idea, I'll have to give that try! It's fun mixing and testing new materials and colors. Thanks so much for the tips and for watching! Have a wonderful evening and talk soon! Steve @blackflycreations ✌️

Ooooh I love purple flies! I'll put it on the list to mix for a future video! Thank you Big Sky Outdoors, Sincerely appreciate you👍 Steve @blackflycreations
I like the box the way that you did it and am wondering if the reason that you drilled the bottom instead of the top is so that you can label it easier also why not cut from the tinsel boa that you have to make the flash in the orange spice color I would add it in before the wool and to make it lighter add some of white a little at a time until you get what you want.
That's a great question Robert! The main reason I drilled the bottom is so I can push the dub through the hole. However I love your idea of labeling the color's! I'm trying to keep a record of materials so I can duplicate them but each needs a name. I like you're suggestion for the orange mix as well. I'm making some dry fly mixes coming up. Thank you Robert! Sincerely appreciate the kind words, I'm always looking for ways to save a few bucks. I drilled the bottom so I could always have a little dub sticking out and still be able to flip the box, open the lid, and add more colors without pulling the dubbing out, or having to push it back in. Hi Sir Tango! Here's a link below! I bought the tan and green wool at hobby lobby. I also purchased this pack and it's pretty good for a merino wool blend. Love this video ! Where can I get the FLY decal you have on the back wall ? I have been finding that the Polyester yarn is kind of expensive around here in New Jersey.
Thank you! I just restocked the "Fly" decals, I just need to update the website so they will be back up this week at www.Blackflycreations.com ... And yes, I dont know why but the Polyester is more expensive right now here in Utah as well. I found a small batch on sale but hopefully it gets cheaper again. @@gldead3741 I'm sorry, I've been so busy trying to restock for 4th qtr that I haven't finished the stickers yet. I have a box in my office I need to photograph and list on my site. Hello Patrick, sorry for the late response. I purchased the wool sheets at Hobby lobby. Ask for "merino wool" they sell it in 3 colors. Also here is a link to some I bought on Amazon, it's okay and cheap, but has some acrylic mixed in it. Here is the link= 👉WOOL Packs for diy dubbing= amzn.to/3Xcqumj I also link materials in each video description just so you know. Hope this helps, have a wonderful day and talk soon! Steve
I was doing a little bit of dub spinning and I found that some synthetic materials do not want to break down and stubbornly stay in stringy type dub that doesn't work well. I was using a new mill grinder. So my recommendation would be to examine quite closely what makes the starting material. I now have a small tub full of different shades of wool yarn
I agree with you John! Some of the synthetics I have to cut to 1/4 inch strips, but wool and most furs are awesome! Thanks for sharing you're tips! Talk soon, Steve @blackflycreations ✌️
I have learned that using two dog brushes which has hundreds of wires on a flat wide brushes. I put the material inbetween the brushes and break them down. I wouldn't do 1/4" cuts it dubs poorly and falls off your flies super fast while fished. Also I avoid natural fibers they rot really quick.
Thats a great question! I think the blender "depending on the blades" could possibly mix some materials that are super light like feather clippings & soft rabbit fur, but I can't recommend it. The biggest difference between the coffee grinder and a blender is the coffee grinder rotates at a very fast rpm and has sharp blades, where as the blender is much slower with dull blades. Sorry I can't give a better answer but who knows maybe it would work! Be careful if you try it, I'd wear eye protection and be prepared for fire! Haha.. "Funny but serious" I learned that even the coffee grinder if ran too long can catch on fire "short 5 second bursts" is much safer. Hope this helps and let me know how it goes! Steve
Thank you for the feedback! I don't like to get to click baity, but it was an experiment. And yes, I know better than to miss my wife's dinner! Haha.. Take care and hope to hear from you again soon!🙃 Steve @blackflycreations
If your talking about the pink that looks like Christmas tree tinsel, Its just holiday tinsel I bot from the craft store "Hobby lobby". Sorry I don't have a link for that. Tight lines and thank you for watching multiple videos! Truly appreciate you Sig! Steve ✌️
Buy a few Hare's Ear Masks. Shave the different areas aka the base of the ears with a ton of guard hairs and then other areas with less guard hairs and put into seperate bags. Than make different textures by mixing the buggy with the less buggy. Then just drop in different color fibers to change the colors.
Thanks for the tips Marc! I'm still experimenting but I have heard hares mask is great for mixing. I have a couple old masks I'll have to try shaving. I also like you're dog brush comment you left for another viewer "Great advice"👍 It's fun trying new materials. Thanks again for the tips and tight lines! Steve✌️
Hey Joseph great question! I purchased at both Hobby lobby "merino wool" and I've purchased on Amazon. Here is a couple links= DUBBING/COFFEE GRINDER= amzn.to/43SlFys WOOL Packs for diy dubbing= amzn.to/3Xcqumj Thanks so much for watching, hope this helps! Talk soon, Steve
I bought yarn. 100% acrylic Red Heart Chopped it in to 1/2" or so pieces. Put in to my old coffee grinder. Pulsed...pulsed...pulsed... It did NOT "FLUFF" It did, kind of ...but it also tied hundreds of tiny little knots in to every color. SO Frustrating!! Any thoughts?!
Man what a bummer, I'm sorry. My only thought is maybe the older coffee grinder blades are not sharp, and it's possible it has a lower rpm motor. I made sure to buy the highest speed grinder with stainless blades that I could find. I've also read that you shouldn't grind coffee beans if your planning to use it for dubbing, and that a 2 blade not 3 blade works best. It was in an article in fly tyer magazine, Ill try to find a link for you so you can check it out. My buddy has an older grinder that doesn't work nearly as well as mine but it still works, he just has to cut the material's into 1/4 inch pieces instead of 1/2 inch. Anyways, sorry for the novel, I've had a blast inventing new dubbing. I hope this helps! Let me know what you discover so I can share with others. Here's the grinder I use=DUBBING/COFFEE GRINDER= amzn.to/43SlFys Thanks for watching and talk soon, Steve✌️
@@blackflycreations Thanks man. Yeah, maybe I'll go buy a new one. I didn't think of the need for it to cut it apart, rather thought we were just breaking the fibers apart and "fluffing" it up. It is a lightly used older one I got years ago, but yeah. Maybe start with a new one and try that. My next thought on this little adventure is how to make homemade "thin skin". That has got to be some silicone from model train supply or something poured out on a sheet try and maybe dyed a little. haha
Just beginning but I found out that fly tying maybe I should just buy the flies some of that stuff is super expensive that's the reason I watch these hack videos to try to lower some of the cost
Hey Jerry! I completely understand the materials can be expensive, so I'm always looking for ways to save. However, what I've learned is if you buy "lets say a pack of hackle" you can tie a bunch of flies from one small saddle. But, I think you have to truly enjoy the hobby, catching fish on a bug you created for me is soooo rewarding especially when it's something new the fish haven't seen 500 of that month. Whatever you decide I wish you the best and appreciate you watching. Talk soon, Steve @blackflycreations ✌️
Hey Gary! Sorry took so long to respond I had to work late. I bought the wool at Hobby Lobby and I just asked for "Merino wool".. They had 3 colors, Olive, Black and the Natural tan. All 3 are awesome but I think it's just a standard wool and not merino. Anyways hope this helps and thank you for watching! Take care, Steve @blackflycreations
Sorry I'm confused, it's an English channel. Try turning on captions and select your language "if your being serious".. If not thanks for watching! Talk soon, Steve ✌️
Pulsing too long will overblend and lose individual colors and materials.. and I recomend using an old grinder with Dull blades so that You keep You're length on the materials You've cut to various length
Thank you for the advice Johnny, You are 100% correct! Now that I've had more practice, I've learned short pulses blend best and "Don't start friction fires" haha.. I'll have to try an old grinder, sometimes they pop up at thrift stores. Appreciate you sharing your knowledge! Have a blessed day and talk soon! Steve ✌️
Hey Michael great question! The holes are so I can keep the box upside down and only pull small amounts of dubbing out while tying. I tried to recreate the name brand dubbing boxes that are kinda pricey. Hope this helps and thank you for watching! Steve
I'm sorry I had to rewind the dinner part of this video an embarrassing amount of times to realize you said "to all you husbands out there" and not "her toy husband is out there." I thought you'd stumbled onto a way for you to fish more while your wife was kept happy by a "toy husband" lol...anyway, I love mixing my own dubbings!

Do you think a regular blender would give same results? It’s a blender I don’t use so I have no worries about it breaking
Haha.. "Funny but serious"
I learned that even the coffee grinder if ran too long can catch on fire "short 5 second bursts" is much safer.
Hope this helps and let me know how it goes!
Steve
@@blackflycreations thanks for the tip. I’ll probably just invest in a coffee grinder😂. Rather be safer than sorry🤷🏾♂️😂. Awesome video btw
The thumb nail was cool, I'm a sucker for click bait. Don't miss dinner lol fun video
Thank you for the feedback! I don't like to get to click baity, but it was an experiment.
And yes, I know better than to miss my wife's dinner! Haha..
Take care and hope to hear from you again soon!🙃

What is the long stuff?
The "yarn" that looks like polar chenille.
If your talking about the pink that looks like Christmas tree tinsel, Its just holiday tinsel I bot from the craft store "Hobby lobby". Sorry I don't have a link for that.
Tight lines and thank you for watching multiple videos!
Truly appreciate you Sig!

Steve✌️
Where do you get the wool
Hey Joseph great question! I purchased at both Hobby lobby "merino wool" and I've purchased on Amazon. Here is a couple links=

Thanks so much for watching, hope this helps!

I bought yarn. 100% acrylic Red Heart
Chopped it in to 1/2" or so pieces.
Here's the grinder I use=DUBBING/COFFEE GRINDER= amzn.to/43SlFys

@@blackflycreations Thanks man. Yeah, maybe I'll go buy a new one. I didn't think of the need for it to cut it apart, rather thought we were just breaking the fibers apart and "fluffing" it up. It is a lightly used older one I got years ago, but yeah. Maybe start with a new one and try that.
My next thought on this little adventure is how to make homemade "thin skin". That has got to be some silicone from model train supply or something poured out on a sheet try and maybe dyed a little. haha
@@69adrummer Your welcome my friend!👌 Keep me posted on the thin skin, that would make an interesting test and video👍
Have fun and talk soon,
Steve

Ive never seen that wool before. What is it called at the store?
Take care,
Steve @blackflycreations
Is there an English version of this?
Sorry I'm confused, it's an English channel. Try turning on captions and select your language "if your being serious"..
If not thanks for watching!

Steve ✌️
What is the point of drilling the holes ?
🤣Thats hilarious my friend! But there's no way thats going down unless it's w ME! I enjoy being her toy🤣 But Fishing is my second most satisfying joy!
Thx for the laugh & for watching!
Dubbing is fun to mix👌

@blackflycreations
I clicked because I want to save money. It seems stupid to pay 10 times as much for things like bead chain, dubbing etc. at a fly tying supply store than you do at a craft store. well done.
Thank you Daniel, I sincerely appreciate your kindness! Glad this video helped. I have more money saving tips in the works. I also support my local Fly shops but there's nothing wrong with saving on some of the lesser quality materials. Plus it's so fun trying new things!👍Take care, Steve @blackflycreations
