The thing about Chainsaw Man is that it isn't like other shounen series; its borderline seinen which is why it moved off the magazine and onto SJ's online service. There are definitely deeper themes about relationships and power dynamics in it, while Fujimoto WILL use every pre-concieved notion about shounens that you have back against you. Fujimoto routinely runs circles around manga readers by thoughtfully subverting every single expectation. After this episode, the real Chainsaw Man begins.
Some people seem to be dismissing that part of the anime as fan service and "just weird", which bothers me so much, we're clearly seeing power dynamics being abused.
@@Henrique-wv9xq yes, you, westerners, are seeing power dynamics because that's the information you were fed up, but not really the thing, not in the manga and not here, with this episode, it doesn't have a creepy vibe nor any of the elements involved in the scene transmitted that. You're just seeing this through very subjective and biased lens
@@simpking1457 Sure dude.. the main antagonist is the literal embodiment of Control. Surely Fujimoto (author of Fire Punch, Look Back, and Goodbye Eri) wrote CSM at face value.. surely.
@@religious5948 His comment is annoying behaviour and spoilers but I don't see you complaining about the thumbnail of this video, which spoiled the craziest moment of the episode for many people including myself, when it's extremely easy to make a thumbnail that doesn't spoil people...
I'm running out of words to describe this anime, every week is better than the other, it always surpasses itself even more... every scene is perfect… we also have to think that the environment in which denji is now is not the best, they are people with the fear of dying always doing whatever they want because of that fear... obviously nothing will be normal.
@darker It's the same for me, even if it's not an action scene it always keeps you entertained, every character is super interesting even if they are secondary.
@darker some of the best chapters of the manga are just the characters conversing and living life. They are essential for everything Chainsaw man is just as the craziness and fighting are
You're noticing the correct stuff, it's supposed to feel sketchy and creepy. Denji is being exploited and he hasn't recognized it yet, the show is about Denji realizing relationships aren't only about sex. A lot of his sexual encounters end in disappointments and that's on purpose.
I will say, I think it’s ok to point out that the theme of relationships is important to the show, but you should be careful with the way you say it. Saying that “his every sexual interaction ends in disappointment” is definitely kind of spoiler-y, as you’re literally giving away the story. Saying that Denji needs to realize the true nature of relationships isn’t bad, though.
@@simpking1457 she is using him as a cope because of her sexual frustration towards Aki. Yes I understand it isn't malicious and under the influence of alcohol but it's still not fair towards Denji. I still really like her as a character and this whole situation is written very well and human.
@@jakublicak1804 i understand you're a westerner and it's really hard for you to not judge the morality of fictional stories, bro, i get it, but i think you must be honest and accept that you're projecting your culture into the story. Nothing bad with that, heck, in that case yes, i share your views, but it's still wrong
Himeno did not say The Fox Devil was down bad. She said soemthing more along the lines of "Only pretty/attractive people can use it's head." In reference to how Aki uses the Fox Devils head. Meaning she thinks he's attractive. Edit: I also think this is a bit of characterization for the Fox Devil. Since it is not Himeno just playing around. The Fox Devil actually likes attractive people.
For real. The manga and anime definitely has its comedic parts (including that scene), but in the end the show is a tragedy about a traumatized, lonely and inexperienced kid being taken advantage of/groomed by nearly everyone in his life. It's honestly pretty sad when you look more into many of the scenes played up for laughs.
I'm glad you guys talked about the whole Denji thing, about how there are power dynamics involved. And, let's be real, Denji is still too young to even know that he's a victim in this situation and the adults should know better. It's quite an uncomfortable topic for many.
Also I think they feel more justified in taking advantage of denji because they see him as less than human. Which technically is correct, but of course he still also 16 year old boy. Aki said it best last episode even though he's ironically the only one who seems him in a humanizing light. Him and power are just tools to be used by the organization until they're no longer useful. Everyone speaks about power like she's an actual pet animal and everyone uses denji to get what they want with no regard for morals (even if in himeno's case which is just pleasure).
@@simpking1457 the power dynamics in this context have nothing to do with them being drunk, but rather the fact that she is his senior. And for the record he is drunk against his will because she vomited in his mouth. He didn’t intentionally consume any alcohol, So even on that front it’s still wrong lol
Loving these because you are really understanding the story!! I feel like because fan service is such a given in the genre people just don't quetion it, but yes these situations are weird and uncomfy! I persoanlly love that Fujimoto explores these taboo topics and it can be frustrating when people think its just Denji and his harem.
Hey, your analisys is pretty on point. Fujimoto likes to put deep things underground layers of weirdness. Whenever someone will find only fanservice and love/hate it, for those, who pay attentions, it opens up from a different angle. And yes, what they are doing with Denji is gross, my man can catch a break and not be used by anyone for some time. However, he himself still doesn't understand it
@@PunpunRen nah, the themes are already evident (you really start noticing a pattern during episodes 3-4) and denji’s character development isn’t really predictable unless someone genuinely, unapologetically spoils you.
@@kevinwilliams200 that's why I said "kinda", it will be more clear later when some things come out, but yeah it's as you said, the themes are present since the beginning
@@PunpunRenactually, I think he handled this in a way that perfectly spoils nothing. He simply said that the author is someone who likes to put messages deeper beneath what’s written on the surface, hinting that there may be some important themes in relationships and power-dynamics without actually saying it. I’d say this is fine.
im honsetly kinda disappointed not many other reactors are picking it up. At this rate when season 3 comes up the big twist will feel like ass-pull to them or "came out of nowhere"...
@ nah, trust me… most of the will react accordingly. I don’t think a lot of people came into chainsaw man thinking that they’d to really think about the underlying themes of the series or that it’d be that “deep”. To be fair, Chainsaw man makes it easy for you to look at it from either a surface level or perceptive viewpoint.
@ dude at this point almost every single anime-only has been spoiled about the big twist. They're not gonna say it's out of nowhere, they are gonna find it predictable. Watch.
Spoilers! I think it’s cool that you’re picking up on the power dynamics in between the relationships of the characters. It’s definitely an important part of the show thematically, among other things. That’s why they put so much emphasis on it. As for Denji and Himeno, Himeno is drunk and basically incapacitated, but Denji also isn’t really in a stable situation either, since he’s incredibly young and easily influenced(also a little drunk). An indication of this is the fact that earlier in the night, Himeno was telling Denji not to drink, but now she forced him to drink, showing that she is sort of not herself right now.
Spoiler . . . . . . I don't think it is wise to confirm their theories. Saying the sexual manipulation is indeed an important part of the story can be considered a spoiler, at least i would have considered it a spoiler of i was anime only
@@luceafarul5740 it's the implicit message of the scene that Denji is being taken advantage of, he asks for water, wonders where he is and complains about being unable to think properly. It's not spoilery to notice that.
@@kevinwilliams200 it doesn't matter if it's hard or not, it is still a spoiler. Saying for example that makima doesn't die in the next episode is pretty evident, but it would still be a spoiler. They might be ok with it but until they explicitly say that they are, i would suggest not to mention things like that
@@meekumanu The fact of the matter is that they were unsure about it and people in the comments have told them how they should interept it. If the people that commented were anime only it would have been fine, but not if you are a manga reader and mention how important for the story it is
Chainsaw Man is pretty thoughtfully written, you don't really have to worry about reading too deeply into things, most of the time anyway. IMO you guys have best csm reactions alongside Semblance of Sanity, I really look forward to every discussion
I will say without spoilers, you are on the right path in yalls train of thought regarding of the themes. One of the reasons that this series is so loved is that while this was published in Shonen Jump and was initially marketed and setup as your standard Shonen, this is the point where it diverges from the Shonen formula. I would also say extend your perspective to the other character's motivations, background, and their interactions with Denji. I think one of the most refreshing thing is that you're partially considering Himeno's background given that she is a depiction of how trauma can perpetuate victimization of others which other reactors haven't considered.
You forgot that Himeno completely lost hope and broke down, Denji gave her hope again that Aki might not have to die facing the gun devil. With the theme of the show I can guess this will end up with her trying to manipulate Denji into protecting Aki. Also it's supposed to make you a bit uncomfortable, it's just the weird perception that some people have when the predator is an older woman, it's creepy but some guys are like 'I wish that was me' which is also creepy.
@@jross7287 With the theme so far and her flash back, breaking down and then seeing hero go from despair to curious and hopeful I can't help but think manipulation is part of it. It might be her being a crazy drunk or it might be a mixture of both.
@@jross7287 I dont think she’s trying to manipulate him either. Shes in love with Aki but can’t have him, Denji is in love with Makima which will never happen. She relates to Denji, but also I think she probably feels like she can “beat” Makima if she can make Denji dismiss his feelings for Makima. She can’t convince Aki to give up on Makima or the Gun devil, but if ahe can convince Denji to give up on Makima, it gives her a little bit of hope that she’s not powerless to change things.
@@jross7287 Makima is definitely manipulative, there’s no questioning that but in Himeno case, being drunk isn’t really a great excuse for that type of behavior. Ignoring the fact that he’s a minor (NOT IN JAPAN), he is still very young and impressionable. It also doesn’t look good when Denji is asking for water and she gives him MORE alcohol even after figuring out he’s underage.
Think you're pretty spot on with the analysis (manipulation & power dynamics being a pretty big theme in the story) It's funny that there are so many anime/manga that portray shit like this in a bad & uncritical way so when something like CSM does it well & isn't afraid to make things uncomfortable it's hard to tell if it's good intentionally or by accident.
I have read a few of fujimotos works and I can confirm what LokyGonzalez said Fujimoto has the skills to pull these type of things off without fucking things up.
I do believe you're reading it correctly. Fujimoto mentioned FLCL as an inspiration for Chainsaw Man, and it is also about a young boy being used and having his feelings as a teenager exploited by the women in his life, including an older woman. It's not showing all these things for a gratuitous intention, I think the manga has a ver mature way of exploring relationships, sex and being a teenager.
It's always so fascinating to hear you guys opinion, this is why I love your reactions so much Also, it might take a very long time, but some of your questions will be answered, probably not all, but some will Also also, cherish these wholesome moments
Excellent discussion about the power dynamics but Himeno is definitely not that evil and diabolical. She did not intentionally vomit into his throat to get Denji drunk to daterape him. 💀 She is just a sloppy lush.
yeah, she's not on some aizen level sexual assault shit, she's just NOT a good person (and clearly incredibly touchy), so her being pissed out of her mind leads to this stuff. I think it's completely natural and cool to feel sympathy and care a lot about himeno's character while ALSO acknowledging that she's a bad person who is taking advantage of denji here (and also someone who shouldnt be let within 10 metres of alcohol ever again)
@@fats2010 the thing about himeno is that unlike makima, shes not trying to use him for anything at all just like how the host comment said shes literally a sloppy women
You guys are absolutely right for seeing the anime like this. It's 100% supposed to be sketchy and many manga readers felt the same way you guys felt and I myself felt like this. Trust me you aren't overthinking it at all, like yeah there's fanservice involved but the show is definitely highlighting how these sexual issues and power dynamics are an issue irl. All of this stems from Denji's immaturity and simply ignorant thought process. There is definitely a bigger picture to this than many people might think.
Spoiler . . . . . I would suggest you not to confirm their theories. It is a spoiler to know if you are right or wrong, at least I would have been mad if I was anime only and somebody told me that i was right about a theory that i had
@@luceafarul5740 Don't see how im confirming any theories? They didn't really theorize anything, they were feeling how the show wanted them to feel and I all I said was they are completely valid to feel that way. They also asked if what they felt was them overthinking or not so I simply responded.

When kid mikasa breaks the knife and the floor through her sheer strength when she kills the last kidnapper, many people wonder if it's just anime or something deeper is going on. If you would say that something deeper is actually going on, you would spoil the reveal that the ackermans have superhuman abilities.
@@luceafarul5740 Not really, they are more specically asking if those scenes in those EXACT moments are deeper than it can seem as far as themes and messaging. Has nothing to do with future events, sorry but I don't get your point here. These are obvious themes the reader/watcher are supposed to pick up during this point of the story so I don't get how I'm spoiling.
You guys have the right idea with the whole power dynamic thing. Himeno isn't doing this maliciously like Makima, but she's not the best person in this situation either. She'll comment on that next episode
Nah you're not reading too much into it at all. I like Himeno but it's pretty clear she has the worst coping mechanisms (smoking, drinking, sleeping with anyone, etc.). Doesn't excuse her behavior at all but I still feel sorry for her in a way (and for Denji, obviously). And I'm not even going to get into the Makima stuff lol
You are totally right, it’s actually rape vibe, he is not only drunk, he is also 16 and she is older than him. If denji were a girl and himeno a guy this would be seen as something super disgusting from the get go, and them being the sex they are doesn’t change the fact that this is sketchy and rapy. Not only himeno but also makima (for me it feels not good) are taking advantage of denji because he is young and wants all that, and I think this show is actually trying to portray that, the fact that they take advantage
Nah y'all are absolutely on point with the discussions and it was honestly to be expected that most reaction channels to this point would not be picking up some obvious/less obvious themes. Most reaction channels (aside from you 2, Filmbuff, agoodwintv and a few others) are not looking that deep into it or heard that CSM is just a hype weirdo action shounen.
You're not reading into it too hard. There is just a weird double standard when it comes to stuff like this. If the genders were reversed people would have more of a problem with it. The relationship is clearly supposed to be inappropriate and portrayed to be weird. People just don't take the victimization of young men seriously.
More people told you this already, but I want to emphasize that you're reading the right signs. And it is kind of surprising because there are people that after reading the manga and watching the anime still decide to take it in the unintended way. That's way I enjoy your reaction videos so much.
"apparently no one else is talking about [the fact Denji's getting groomed]" yeah, takes time for most people to notice that's kind of the running theme. it's not accidental, it's not supposed to be the standard shonen "woohoo hot girl give main guy attention". i'm glad you're noticing it already, even if it's severely uncomfortable.
i really like hearing your takes on these because sometimes i don't connect dots or think about alterior motives, and it's fascinating to hear your thoughts on things
Now that you guys mention other reaction channel that really puts interesting insight about this anime I I might as well drop my list here 1. Filmbuff (his critique is definitely very neat and organized especially when he touches different aspects of the show like animation and stuff) 2. Auto save (their discussions are easy to follow and understand and as anime perspective viewers they like to play with character motives and theories about how abilities works and such) 3. Sos bros ( they blend their humorous commentary while also giving educational purposes when it comes to understanding a character not just from the surface views but more complex nature)
you guys seem to be the only ones that have picked up on how creepy the situation with Denji is (at least from the reactions I’ve seen), he’s only being taken advantage of and it’s because he knows basically nothing about anything
Wow it’s really rare to see reactors that actually analyze the characters and situations they’re in.Thank you guys for noticing things like this,it is really interesting to listen to your opinions🤍
you guys are the only ones i watch that have interesting after discussions and i always listen to the whole thing. and the comment section on BOLDcast is really cool too 'cause i also learn a lot from your viewers. ❤
Yes the Himeno part was like that in the manga as well. You aren't reading to much into it at all, every detail matters no matter how small it seems at first glance.
9:40 crowds, flying, the ocean, surgery, heavy machinery, aging, playing sports. There's a lot of good things that are scary. It would also be interesting if devil fear counts as a source to empower Denji, since both the Bat and Zombie were freaked af in their fights.
The transactional thing that u mentioned is interesting to me, the only unconditional thing is probably Pochita offering his heart to Denji but he did say it's a contract but Denji did the same to Pochita too when he said my blood ain't free though, the transactional is always a theme in csm
13:00 No, she didn't say "down bad". She said a Japanese word/phrase approximately equivalent in meaning to "down bad". It's a innovative concept called translation.
What was the japanese word/phrase? Can you give a detailed explanation of the translation so we can understand better why the "down bad" expression was specifically chosen?
I think you should make a disclaimer and say what you consider spoiler and what you don't. I see multiple people in the comments confirming or denying some of your thoughts. I don't think any of them have malicious intent, it is just a matter of what each person considers a spoiler
Absolutely love your discussion at the end. All the negative things happening to Denji during his "quests" seem very deliberate parts of the story. The situations are also clearly very uncomfortable on purpose compared to an ecchi show.
I've heard characters call stuff lit in recent rhythm games so maybe Himeno really did say it in some form. And not just the subs saying "that was lit" the VA actually said "lit" with a japanese accent. It wouldn't surprise me if Japanese people were finding ways to incorporate western slang. whether the everyday person actually does or it's just a media thing is another question.
Your point of view is interesting, I have felt it too. I guess we have to wait and see where the series wants to lead us. I mean, at some point there's going to be a crossroads between whether Denji gets everything he wants and he's OK, or on the contrary he starts to rethink things.
I really like what you guys says about denji's situation. it's very eye opening and not many reactors talk about it the way you did.so thank you for the explanation....! Love your reactions...♥️
The Podcast Devil (A podcast about this show with both Anime-Only and Full Manga Readers talking about the show) when they got to Episode 5 had a segment about Malian’s vibes and they go over a lot of what you two brought up in your discussion.
So the word that is actually said during the 'down bad' bit is '面食い'(menkui), which means someone who is attracted to people based on appearances only. Its a pretty slangy phrase so they tried to find an English phrase that is also slang and means approximately the same thing. As with any translation the connotations don't exactly line up, but I think they did a pretty good job getting the same vibe across.
you guys noticing the reactions of others compared to yours is spot on LOL. don't worry your discussions and thoughts are right where they need to be, can't say the same for other reactors though. keep enjoying the show
Yes, this show's deepest point is "Don't open the door" at the beginning of the first episode. I would not comment on what that means because that would make kind of a spoiler. But, I think people already get that vibe. The less you know, the happier you are.
It's good to read into things. It means having faith in the thing you're consuming to care about it, or at the very least being critical about it which is still caring.
About the whole relationship thing I think one of the things fujimoto was trying to do is make you think it's this kind of fan service like story well it's the pov of denji after all but as the manga goes on you clearly see the deeper themes... the point is to grow just like denji, not everything is what it seems and it's even more true when we're talking about fujimoto's storytelling... i mean he said himself that he doesn't think the reader is dumb and that he shouldn't spoon feed them the message of the story
@@Jev_the_fluorescent_shrimp well if they still take everything at face value by the end of the series that's on them, fujimoto doesn't need to dumb it down
No, Carson, you 100% picking up. It is a big part of the show. It does not have to be said. The author put it there for a reason, art is meant to be interpretive. For other interesting reactions see Semblence of Sanity, they also have a bit of a discussion after an episode

you are not over-reading on the last scene. It was meant to be weird. it was in denji's pov in the manga as well. I always appreciate that you guys pick up on these things. Sometimes you do over-read some scenes but i always appreciate the extra things you see as it can add up to our vision. The transactional structure of relationships are also intentional and is meant to feel weird, we will get more expansion on that topic and Denji's thoughts about on the topic but most likely not in season 1
Japanese here. I'm not too sure what "Down bad" means; but she says 面食い (Menkui) which is a slang used for people who are only attracted towards visually handsome/beautiful people.
Himeno was completely drunk in the last scene as well. In that moment she doesnt even remember how old he is (she talks with him about this the Morning after). You will see next episode anyways. About makima, she is just manipulating denji, she will do whatever it takes to take advantage of him. Its not meant to be seen as a good action, its supposed to make you question makima’s morals.
Being drunk is never a good excuse lol. Example; i was soooo drunk that I didn’t even realize/forgot she was 16 (says the man in his 20’s). ⚠️Spoilers⚠️ Of course they didn’t have sex because Denji rejected the idea BUT if he was to be any more intoxicated it could of went south, real fast. Also I don’t completely by her saying she didn’t remember ANYTHING from the night prior. She literally piggybacks him back to her house and then gave him MORE alcohol through mouth to mouth. Hime is sus lol.
@@kevinwilliams200 im not excusing her im making a point on the fact that makima is actually malicious compared to her because she is fully aware of what she is doing

A lot of people are black and white thinkers and/or don't want to think critically when engaging with fiction. To them, having to be critical of their favorite show/characters is basically the same as ruinning all the fun, so they either intentionally avoid those discussions or lash out as soon as someone points something out. They'll say you're being "too political" or say stuff like "it's not that deep" or "it's not a real person" as if you are the problem to avoid thinking more deeply about something that is probably very uncomfortable for them. But with authors like Chainsaw man's author, they can't get away with those excuses. He clearly understands exactly what he is writting and why. Every piece of information you get in that show has purpose.
The scepticism you guys mention about overinterpreting situations or social fabric is nothing to worry about. Right now i know only 2 reacter´s (you guys are one of them) who gets deeper in the fabric and social clues. It is a (manga) anime where you have to reflect a bit more to really understand what is happening there. Many reactors are used to watch so many animes/movies. They have seen so many love storys, kisse, friendships etc. that they project alot and dont even catch up on power dynamics and the many social flaws presentet in almost every scene. What i want to say... you guys are doing great, you catch alot of stuff and its not overinterpretation :)
its supposed to be creepy and weird cuz of the power dynamics sure theres fan service but all these older women are taking advantage of him. the story paints human relationships and denji's desperate craving for natural human connections it goes waaaaay deeper than just wanting a kiss or a touch fujimoto is a genius
It's not fan service if it is literally part of the story. Denji is a typical teen so whenever we see his POV and he's ogling someone that's just who he is.
Dude the reaction is perfect, you get the show. youre not overthinking it, Fujimoto is a insane writer. go read "Look back" , and "Goobye Eri". where Fujimoto flexes his writing skills without the expectations of Shonen jump.
Another good reaction. This series has a lot to read into. You're not alone in noticing these things. You might even say it's all part of a broader theme. Cool video!
I think your comments are spot on and you're not reading too much into it at all. For as immature and childish as the show presents Denji as being, it still reminds the audience quite often and blatantly that he is an underdeveloped, unsocialized child who has spent his entire life being taken advantage of by one group of adults or another. The people around him are at best similarly broken people in a similar situation as him and at worst malicious, manipulative predators. I am interested in seeing where the series goes from here but so far it seems to be about finding some sort of happiness and fulfillment in the absolute worst of circumstances.
Y’all’s solid media literacy is a brain massage, I swear. Himeno is my problematic fave from the manga, and as sus as she behaves in this episode, I think it really rounds out her character in some pretty interesting ways. She’s deeply traumatized, and keeps up this bubbly façade that she only drops when revisiting her trauma or when she’s self-medicating as seen in the izakaya scene. Anyone who has experience with alcoholism watched this episode a little differently. Her behavior at the bar, her compulsively drinking to excess, her putting herself in sexual situations that she never would be in when sober, it all rings eerily familiar to a lot of us (with the notable exception of going after a minor, yuck) and that’s what makes her such a compelling character. She’s not merely sus, she’s an alcoholic who copes in destructive ways with her trauma and I love that the show is neither dismissive nor didactic about it. Peak show-don’t-tell writing.
Your takes at the end were pretty fucking spot on and I didn't even clock it while watching the episode. I am really glad you guys are saying this cause, not to be that guy, but if the roles were revered.....anitwitter would go CRAZY! It's probably integral to the story to realize although denji is succeeding in attaining his immature goals at the end of the day he is being taken advantage of
i’m pretty sure in the manga himeno called fox devil shallow for only letting hot people use her head, not down bad. these subtitles just be saying anything at this point 🤣
i wonder if the swallowing part has something to do with him being a devil, not a thing Denji would actually do usually or naturally (outside of the devil's inhabitation)
I loved watching your guys’ reactions, as a manga reader, I’m glad that you guys recognized that denji is a victim since I haven’t seen reactions catch onto that.
Pochita is technically the Chainsaw devil. On episode 1, Denji made a contract with him which was basically giving his body to pochita (this is my understanding as an anime only after)
I would say that in the manga, the scene with himeno and denji is a tad bit creepier, given that we can see denji's face instead of just watching himeno on top of him. Im the manga while himeno talks, denji is just muttering and completely out of his mind, it was definitely meant to be seen as creepy and sketchy as hell 💀
Oh yeah, been waiting for this one 😅 Reading it in the manga was... an experience. But seeing it animated really takes it to another level. "My first kiss tasted like barf." sounds like something that you REALLY could hear from a real person and that makes it even more painful to think about. Man, I was so sorry for Shinji. Also, might as well mention, I personally feel we shouldn't think too much about Shinji's age. His mind is a mix of being an immature child and someone who was forced to mature fast to take care of themselves. And he's working a job for adults with adults. The way I see it, 16 is just a number in his case. His head is too all over the place to fit in any mold of an age range. He might as well be a grown man-child in the body of a 16 years old. Dude's been through stuff that would mature someone way past his age, but without the basic society knowledge and skills that would befit that. My point is, it's hard to transcribe his situation into the morals and ideals we perceive. Everything is too messed up.
You're ABSOLUTELY right, and not reading too much into it. It's what the audience is supposed to get from the narrative, but sadly, not many actually do.
Oh nah man, you do have the right reading on the sexual situations, and it's the same as everything else. It's the whole "being a dog" thing. He trusts too much, forgives/forgets/stops caring too easily, etc. And I think one of the focal points of part 1 of CSM is just that, that he doesn't care as long as he gets the little things he wants, but everything about the writing and the direction is telling you - and him - that he should care actually.
you guys are definitely picking up on some of the subtle things or messages. I think it’s as you mentioned the initial watch or reaction for other reactors overshadows those details.
12:56 that is localizing and probably the most acceptable form of it too, at least their not changing stories or give certain characters different motives for the sake of their own political social agenda
what a wholesome episode with absolutely no disgusting scenes at all 😊

The thing about Chainsaw Man is that it isn't like other shounen series; its borderline seinen which is why it moved off the magazine and onto SJ's online service. There are definitely deeper themes about relationships and power dynamics in it, while Fujimoto WILL use every pre-concieved notion about shounens that you have back against you. Fujimoto routinely runs circles around manga readers by thoughtfully subverting every single expectation. After this episode, the real Chainsaw Man begins.
this.
Can't fucking wait for next episode man.

A lot of his sexual encounters end in disappointments and that's on purpose.
ahh thats kind of a spoiler isn't it when i read the manga realizing this fact towards the ending was what made me like denji and blew my mind
Actually, no, at least the Himeno parts never have a dark tone to it, I'm sure you're projecting, m8
After that she used the word 面食い "menkui" which refers to someone who is only interested in looks
Also fox is a notoriously frivolous animal in eastern and also western lore
no you're right, Denji is a victim bro 💀
Bruuuh you have no fucking idea what poor denji has in store for him.
Denji is a Devil already no matter his underage
Power dynamics, a dude drunk and a girl drunk, uh. Who's the one in power here?
@@simpking1457 not girl, woman, she's at least 5 year older than denji, considering aki can drink and she is even older than aki
However, he himself still doesn't understand it
Yeah loved their breakdown!
honestly it's kinda spoilery to talk about bc it's part of his character development and themes of the series
@@PunpunRen nah, the themes are already evident (you really start noticing a pattern during episodes 3-4) and denji’s character development isn’t really predictable unless someone genuinely, unapologetically spoils you.

Power dynamics is some important point in the series.
Well turns out she is normal like everyone else 😩
im honsetly kinda disappointed not many other reactors are picking it up.
An indication of this is the fact that earlier in the night, Himeno was telling Denji not to drink, but now she forced him to drink, showing that she is sort of not herself right now.

god i love the sos brothers, theyve been my ride or die for years
I will say without spoilers, you are on the right path in yalls train of thought regarding of the themes.
@@mayonnaise9993 it’s still somewhat manipulative, selfish, & creepy. She essentially using denji to make herself feel better.
@@jross7287 Makima is definitely manipulative, there’s no questioning that but in Himeno case, being drunk isn’t really a great excuse for that type of behavior. It also doesn’t look good when Denji is asking for water and she gives him MORE alcohol even after figuring out he’s underage.
Shes like 20 its not that bad
Think you're pretty spot on with the analysis (manipulation & power dynamics being a pretty big theme in the story)
It's funny that there are so many anime/manga that portray shit like this in a bad & uncritical way so when something like CSM does it well & isn't afraid to make things uncomfortable it's hard to tell if it's good intentionally or by accident.
fujimoto obviously knows what he's doing so it's intentional, if you've read his other works you know he's good enough to pull them off
I have read a few of fujimotos works and I can confirm what LokyGonzalez said Fujimoto has the skills to pull these type of things off without fucking things up.

Absolutely love your discussion at the end. All the negative things happening to Denji during his "quests" seem very deliberate parts of the story. The situations are also clearly very uncomfortable on purpose compared to an ecchi show.
The girl was killing it 😭 as a manga reader, idk how she was so on point

Denji is a typical teen so whenever we see his POV and he's ogling someone that's just who he is.
been watching yalls reaction for a bit now and this discussion was so good it made me subscribe!

Cool video!
Great breakdown/discussion! The themes of the show becomes even more apparent as the series continues.
"who's covering the bills?"
Taxpayers, obviously. XD
I'm sure Makima wrote this off as expense
loved the reaction guys, also you guys have probably my favorite discussions for this series of the channels I’ve seen (:
31:35 talking about High School DxD, i still can't believe main character Isei has same seyu Eren in AoT does)
I think your comments are spot on and you're not reading too much into it at all.
What? She was extremely touchy-feely with multiple people even when sober.
@@anitaremenarova6662 hey sorry, I don’t really understand how that is in contention with what I wrote. Could you clarify what you mean?
Not even the manga could prepare me for the audible gulping sound.
Ain’t no victims here bud
@domainhami5253 he ain’t a victim to something he likes
Pochita is technically the Chainsaw devil. On episode 1, Denji made a contract with him which was basically giving his body to pochita (this is my understanding as an anime only after)
I would say that in the manga, the scene with himeno and denji is a tad bit creepier, given that we can see denji's face instead of just watching himeno on top of him. Im the manga while himeno talks, denji is just muttering and completely out of his mind, it was definitely meant to be seen as creepy and sketchy as hell 💀
You should definitely read Fujimoto's one shots. They have nothing to do with Chainsaw Man, but you can see what kind of writer he is by reading them.
Oh yeah, been waiting for this one 😅
Reading it in the manga was... an experience.
I've read most of Fujimoto's works and none of his stories feature fanservice just for the sake of it
What about quanxi’s orgy doble panel and in color 😂 i still dont know how he manage to publish that in shonen jump
@@kodaksito9597 she’s a lesbian
@@Jing_Ling_Uncles ? So what
@@Jing_Ling_Uncles So it's not fanservice if she's a lesbian💀💀
Have you seen some of the coloured pages💀
You're ABSOLUTELY right, and not reading too much into it. It's what the audience is supposed to get from the narrative, but sadly, not many actually do.
Oh nah man, you do have the right reading on the sexual situations, and it's the same as everything else. It's the whole "being a dog" thing. He trusts too much, forgives/forgets/stops caring too easily, etc. And I think one of the focal points of part 1 of CSM is just that, that he doesn't care as long as he gets the little things he wants, but everything about the writing and the direction is telling you - and him - that he should care actually.
That scene was even more graphic in the manga… and Im not talking about the eternity devil fight.
you guys are definitely picking up on some of the subtle things or messages. I think it’s as you mentioned the initial watch or reaction for other reactors overshadows those details.
Your subtitles are not the ones I had, but I pirated it a few hours ago so Idk if they’re right or mine is right
12:56 that is localizing and probably the most acceptable form of it too, at least their not changing stories or give certain characters different motives for the sake of their own political social agenda
Can someone tell me what was the name of the song playing at the beginning when Denji was fighting the Eternity devil?
