I imagine Denji died a lot more off screen with the eternity devil as well. With Himeno reviving him each time with her ghost devil.
A good few hints in regards to Makima seem interesting, but can't downplay that Arai is a legend to react the way he did.

Power leaving can sound like an asshole move, but I agree with her choice. She knows she will die if she stays trying to rescue these people, so why would she not run away? Yeah, your typical battle shounen will always present characters as being willing to fight an unwinnable fight to the death, but that is completely unrealistic, and no one should be blamed for running away, since that makes far more sense. Denji could have run away too, but he did not exactly have much of a choice, being unconscious for most of the ordeal and all. Also, remember that Aki burdened Power with saving Himeno, but Himeno died all on her own, so there is nothing tying Power down to staying. I have no idea if Aki is dead or not, but even if he is not, Power assuming he is dead is reasonable. The only other person worth staying for is Denji, but why do that if she will get killed? Yes, it is true that Power is very childish and acts in ways that tend to disruptive to everyone else, but her running away is probably one of the most reasonable things she has done in the series so far. Why lose the entire squad, as opposed to only 3/4 of the squad?

It makes sense that the exchange rate is different between devils. It might take an entire arm to draw a large amount of power from a weak devil, while for the same amount of power less is required to sacrifice to a stronger devil. Like a small amount of the gun devil will still be much stronger than a large amount of a weak devil. (I think this is shown in that just the nail sacrifice was enough for the snake devil to overpower the ghost devil even at full strength. While many fear ghosts, many don't even believe in them. While a fear for snakes is pretty much engraved in human DNA.)
We already know that there's no standard exchange rate because the Fox Devil apparently offers different terms based on how attractive she finds the Devil Hunter making the contract. So it seems the cost and benefit of the contract is entirely up to negotiation and how much the devil likes you.
Or they can make your terms worse depending on how much they want you to suffer.
I think it's mostly just a mutual agreement between two entities. There's no standardized value of human body parts. It's likely some devils enjoy stealing body parts while others don't value them as much. I could give a massage to a stranger on the street for 10 bucks but if you're my friend and I like you then I'll give one to you for 5 bucks. It's possible devils or humans in dire situations may be willing to sacrifice more for the sake of creating a mutually beneficial contract, and it's also possible that a dangerous/reputable human likely has an easier time forming contracts as they'd be otherwise a bigger threat to certain devils. There are many factors which result in largely varying terms for devil contracts, but there are no rules. There is no guidebook. It's just a mutually beneficial agreement between two entities, and the circumstances behind that agreement could vary widely. The one and only rule is that once a contract is made, if either party breaks the contract they will die.

There are a few possibilities: 1) She simple didn't get to know their names. 2) This long range technique isn't strong enough to kill those two over range or requires far more resources. 3) She wants them to live for whatever reason.

Makimas such an enigma to me idk if shes a human with devil contracts or a devil with alot of tricks up her sleeve really great character and eps.

I doubt she's a devil, no devil we've seen so far looks like a human. My thinking right now is that she's the death fiend with a lot of powerful contracts and the whole reason she's doing this is so that she can get back on top of the food chain from this weakened half-human state.

The crushing way she kills some of them look like a splat from falling from a tall place, and the ritual required a high altitude temple, wonder if she is contracted with the Devil who's fear is based on heights or falling which would be a strong devil as that is a VERY strong fear.

In the hotel episode, Himeno exactly specified that fiends and devil can't make a contract with each other. Devil can only make contract with humans. Another hint: Makima needs name to do the execution thing, maybe there's not much information of the katana man and snake woman. She explicitly said "there's all I can do", so there's limit of what she can do

snake girl is just normal girl with contract with snake devil. snake eyes is either design decision like with denji's teeth or side-effect of her contract with snake. makima is definitely not a fiend because all fiends have weird heads (that guy denji encountered or power who has horns) so like with snake-girl eyes may be side-effect of her contract, or just design

"Shark teeth" in anime originated as a stylistic depiction of crooked teeth, which makes sense with Denji's childhood. And yes it's suggested that her eyes are because of her contact

She could probably easily see things with heat, but probably has a hard time distinguishing details of her surroundings. Each devil has their own traits and personality. They’re just like humans, except for some things. There has been instances where devils give contracts that are seriously just not worth it. And they do it on purpose. They don’t care. Devils that have different amount of empathy, care or specific goals. They also have desires and fears. For now, all we know is that they either enjoy human suffering and fear because it makes them stronger. Or they just barely care. Or they actually care for some humans, and can get attached to them.

Its the style of song i thought of when reading the manga , i personally think it fits the show pretty well.
As an anime only, I get that Makina seems a bit demonic, but in episode 6, Himeno said only humans can get devil contracts, and also she said last episode she had fun drinking with everyone and that superiors are annoying -> I think she's a human -> a bit off, but I can fix her.

Ghost gave cigarette despite Himeno not ordering anything, whole Aki=Gun reality in his brain, Violence Fiend saying that he has all memories of previous body and staying always with Kobeni to protect her again.
I think it is safe to assume that human nature takes a print on devil always, especially if it is old one.
If you think about it, Power is supposed to be very old, older than Makima even, because blood is with humanity since the beginning while scary wars probably appeared in 2000 AD or somewhat. Which also makes her changing memory antics not childish bravado but a suffering of declining and old devil.

One aspect that makes the series stand out is that every devil is unique and all abilities are based on them. It adds a lot of speculation aspect, because immediately when a new character shows up you start thinking what devil they are contracted with and what is the price the devil is asking. It's a small thing, but it adds something you just don't get in a series where the typical enemies are difficulty graded fantasy monsters.
Since the period setting is the 90s, the designs of the bullet train and station signs are from that time. Kyoto Station is totally different now, too:)
5:39 when hearing the sirens in this scene and Makima coming off the bullet train it reminded me of a particular scene from Breaking Bad.

i think they have subtly placed many famous movie scenes into this show, Makima's death scene from ep8 reminds me of John Travolta in Pulp Fiction, and Kishibe (the blonde guy in the cemetery with Himeno) has the same outlook as Ichi the Killer (a Japanese gore film)

I really enjoy listening to your theories (and smiling every now and then when something close to the real thing is mentioned, or something interesting comes up from your ideas), and you guys are the reactors I wait for every week after watching the episode myself. And I agree with that part you guys said about fight scenes that are simply flashy and bombastic- I personally also don't care much either unless it matters to the characters too. Like how that fight with Kobeni vs snake girl and the sword man. It matters to her because they're accomplices of people that shot her buddy, and because, maybe, some of her screws are starting to get loose? XD
As a mangareader, I'm now interested in noticing some detective trivia and chekhovian guns while watching. Here, for example, are a few questions about who Makima is: 1 why is everyone afraid of her, especially creatures associated with the otherwordly, like Power. 2 why did she tell the hunters at the train station that she wasn't hit, even though she obviously was. 3 how she knew the names of those she killed from the temple, and why she didn't kill the katana man and the snake girl 4 the most unobvious but interesting question is why she asked the hunters to wear blindfolds, since the only thing she concealed was her hand movements. The hunters heard the prisoners called names, and in the end saw that the prisoners were sacrificed.
Did ask myself (and with the couple of friends which I watch the anime with) all of those questions EXCEPT the last one. It think I just guessed it was something like Makima thinking "I don't want them to see people dying", but if it is actually a plot device, then I'm intrigued.

I just want to say, since they clarified it already during the fight with the eternity devil it's not technically a spoiler. Fiends cannot form contracts with devils. And devils can't make contracts with other devils. A contract can only be formed between a devil and a human. So for instance, Power is incapable of forming a contract with a devil. She has her own power, the powers of the blood devil.
Oh also, I think the ghost devil pulling Denji's cord is implied to have been Himeno's last dying effort.

Worth noting is that, as was pointed out to Power in the Eternity Devil arc, devils and fiends can't make contracts with other devils and fiends -- they can only make contracts with humans. If Makima is a devil or fiend, she couldn't have contracts with devils, but she could form contracts with humans. With regards to hybrids, the rules aren't clear, since the only two we know are Sword Guy and Denji, and they haven't been shown trying to contract with other devils.

Kobeni character reminds me of the MC from the movie Upgrade, where an AI takes over his body and fights for him but all the facial expressions are still his.. So her Devil is prolly some badass warrior takes over her body to fight.
the snail of the opening when Makima appears is parasited, they have those eyes when their mind is controlled by an specific parasite and they are basically walking corpses at that point, I dont know if that has anything to do with makima or if its a spoiler I didnt read the manga but well, just realized the detail on the snail now lol
Yup it's called leucochloridium.
Basically they live inside bird poop, which would be eventually be eaten by a poor ignorant snail finding it appetizing. His never ending hell begin right there.
The snail, mind controlled, will put himself deliberately in danger, for the birds to see these very appealing colored tentacles, and to eat them; then again the parasite continues his life inside the bird.
The thing is the snail will most likely survive it, without the tentacles removed by some bird.
However there will always be some of the parasite larvae remaining inside the snail's stomach, which will grow to form other flashy tentacles, mind controlling the snail to put himself to danger, again and again and again until death 💀

I remember back when they fought the eternity devil, they said that devil contracts do not work on fiends so Makima is probably not one. Makima's eyes look like a devil so she is probably like Denji but Makima said that Denji is not the same as the others but the Katana Devil guy seems the same as Denji. Denji and Katana Devil guy don't have eyes like Makima and Makima don't transform like them. Hmm. It's hard to theorize but Makima don't seem to summon devil powers like what Himeno and Aki does. So I think Makima is more likely a devil of her own? Probably? Idk because she seems to resemble human form unlike Devils. Or may be Makima is like Denji but her powers might not require temporary transformation, just permanent on her eyes.

I believe Makima couldn't kill the other two people because she ran out of people. I think she used all the sacrifices she could make, and since she was out of people she couldn't continue, explaining why she saud that that's all she could do.

Fyi, Akane has different eye (snake eyes), but is a human. Shes a human BCS she has a contract with the snake devil and we know that Devils cant make contracts with each other, meaning that Akane is a human. For Makimas case, she has unique eye, but she might have gained them from a devil, just like snake girl. The two scar faced characters also mentioned that Makima has made contracts with devils. This implies that makima is a human since, again, devils cant make contracts with eachother. There's the possibility that she fooled public safety into believing that her powers are gained through contracts, which would mean that her eye are like that not bcs of her contract with a devil like Akane, but bcs she's a devil just like Power.

Let's talk about makima killing people on the train , if the gun devil can cause damage on a nuke's scale. His bullets gotta be big , in intro his bullets look quite big. So i think the gaping holes in the bodies were gunshots , i think Makima got a contract with the gun devil her eyes looks like fox devil but yknow what else her eyes looks like? Gun scopes. So i feel like that's why the bullet did nothing. Her hiding the fact she got shot makes me suspicious as well.
Maybe she knew their names because they had guns?

did they explain devil contract that makima use in this EP? I didn't remember and still confuse till this day what the devil is this that she use?

They never explained which specific devil she used this episode, but considering she can control literally any devil she thinks is below her she's not exactly limited

I don't think it was explained how she knew their names or what kind of power she used. In the fandom wiki it only describes the scene we saw this episode but it doesn't explain how she knew their names or the name of the power she uses (they only refer to it as a "force power").
Howeveeeer it's been theorized and it can be vaguely hinted in the manga itself that she was behind the attack, actually. If she was behind it, then that would explain how she knew their names.

The colors are a bit of a drama on the fanbase because the author is a genius of pop art and his use of vibrant color is great and a lot of fans wished that the anime looked like that.
I think that works for the manga but I think for the anime, the muted colors just gives you a sense of realism, it gives you time to process everything that's happening without ovewhelming you with sensory overload. Colors have a way of changing one's perception, had they used more vibrant colors I feel like the scenes would be less impactful.

Makima is the best, not like the one who runs away , they will make us understand after a single click. outside of jokes, "chainsaw man" is a great series, it's good that mappa didn't censor blood and other things.

nah I get ya. a cool looking fight is fun and all, but GREAT fights are about the story around them, the characters.
After the bat devil, the best battles in Chainsaw Man involve strong characters as well as mysteery elements. Who is this mysterious yakuza? why is he able to become something like Denji? Who is his aprtner? why are they killing everyone? Its always cool to see a new character introduced in chainsaw man because it makes you ask questions about them.
Plus Chainsaw Man isn't really ABOUT its fights, they tend to be rather short and quick. Its mroe about the horror of the new devil or the mystery of the new foe or how the fight affects denji as a character or the other characters.
also yes seeing Kobeni show WHY she managed to get in Division 4 is awesome. Really shows there's more to her than her cowardice.

I think the crows are there because they can feel that someone is about to die, not because Makimas’s power are linked to the crows
In superstition, it says crows represent death and always linger close just like death. Which is why in a lot of manga and some movies, crows are seen in battlefields or cemeteries around lots of corpses

Makima can control small animals and use them to always keep eyes on people. In the manga she uses rats, birds, and bugs to keep track of the entire main cast. This even leads to one of the most disturbing panels in the manga where a character had to write in a notepad even when alone with their ally “Makima is listening”

with Makima it wouldn't surprise me if her entire character is based on deus ex machina. I mean has bullshit powers that can easily resolve any issue, clearly gets shot but comes out unharmed. Hell, even her name is similar to the writing technique Makima- Machina. I think the author took the term and tried to make a character out of it.
