Yes, you definitely need a new head unit! That will allow you to actually tune that sub to its optimal frequency. After you figure out your preferred range you can tune the amp at the same frequency. You should never have to turn anything to it's max.
Yea… upgrading the door speakers may also help. Besides the head unit I would recommend shorting up your ground wire. I’m not sure what type of sun you have but I would recommend a bigger amp. 800 watts doesn’t seem enough for a 15”. But it could be the type of sun. Skar is known for putting lower power subs in boxes sold together.
Oh dear god, you don’t tune a subwoofer via the head unit you set the gains and x-over on the amp properly furthermore if you want fine adjustments you get a dsp which offers a wide range of options for your system in terms of tuning, car audio 101 touching any of the EQ on the car can mess up the audio quality, audio systems should be flat that means no frequency will be overpowering the others, imax movie theaters are flat, 20hz-20khz, a flat response is the most optimal audio quality because like i said no frequency will be louder than others, the fact people still recommend this malarkey is sad, leave the fking EQ alone on your head unit!
Really, it just depends on budget, electrical, space you have, or what your goals are. I compete, do 162.3 db with 4 18's at 16v. Im down with whatever makes ppl happy with car audio. As long as it's safe, it's all good🤙
I used to have the same truck. But mine was a yukon. And i ran my system the same exact way. Same drilled hole in the floor and all. 2 years i had it no issues at all. I pulled it all when i sold it.
I have the same prefab enclosure too but after 5 months of running the sdr 15" it started making a rattling noise so I brought a sounqube hds d2 15" and it hits even harder and the lows are crazy. I always run a old-school head unit with 4 volt pre outs for a good signal.
Reach out to me and I'll walk you through the settings on the radio if needed. Kenwood has a volume offest for different source input. +-8 its in the menu on the radio. Select your source w src button. Then press volume knob to enter Function mode. Turn volume knob till screen says Audio Control. Turn thru settings till Volume Offset and adjust accordingly.
Shortest length wire for negative to ground possible. There’s always a space in the firewall where oem wire is fed…safest opening to bring in power. Settings on the Kenwood should allow for input level based on source.
A head unit with dedicated subwoofer preamp outputs will make all the difference. The basic point without going into it too much is that will allow you to take the bass out of your door speakers and the treble out of your sub. That's 100% what you need, I'd recommend a mid level Pioneer head unit.
On the radio, put a high pass crossover on the speakers at 100hz to roll off the bass below that, should help with the speaker distortion. Add a low pass crossover to the subwoofer, experiment with 60-100hz and the slope of it to find what blends the best with the main speakers
In Audio Settings, how's your Volume Offset? you can tune the loudness of each audio source there. So say play the radio and adjust Volume Offset to make louder ( I believe on mine at Zero is my loudest for each source), But check your CD, AUX and so on with some music playing on each and adjust accordingly. I had to do the same for Sirius, AUX and radio to make all equally loud. I hope it helps.. 🤞🤞
get a new head unit and as for the amp tuning, have radio volume set to the highest volume that you will be listening to and turn bass knob all the way to max. turn down your gain to lowest for now and then turn bass eq to 12 dB then play a song and while it plays slowly turn up the gain until your liking or until you hear the sub clipping. sounds good but for a 15 it should definitely be hitting harder it barely moved the rearview mirror. if you cant turn up gain as much as you want without it clipping then turn bass eq to 6 and repeat the steps
That’s because your source volume for aux is low. In my head unit there is option for source volume I don’t know if older units have that option. Check in settings if you have that option if not go for pioneer.
Is your amplifier gain level adjusted correctly because if its not up correctly it might not sound as loud as it should. Get a PAC ground isolator 10× the rca booster. Also is your subwoofer rca hooked to subwoofer output. Dont forget to turn your low pass filter on your Skar amplifier to 150hz. I seen that its all the way down so your only being able to play the very low frequencies. Now leave the subsonic off like how you have it set.
150hz will sound horrible and the subwoofer itself will get out of control and boomy. 80hz is the max and the subsonic filter should be set 25hz - 30hz.The subsonic filter should always be set to the Fs of the box. Boosting RCA voltage is also risky as it can and will at mininal pop the fuse and worse case scenerio over heat the amp and kill it. If his amp is a true 800 watts at 65% gain it should be rattling the panels loose...The RMS of that subwoofer is probably 600 to 700 watts.
that's normal for AUX. It never is loud. Upgrade to a better headunit with Bluetooth. Amp settings differ between each head unit. Better headunits have a higher RCA output signal, which makes the amp require less gain. Another thing is turn your LPF up to 75-80hz. It'll give a lot more bass response, with the LPF all the way down to 50hz the amp will only allow frequencies of 50hz and lower to play through the sub. You won't hear much bass except for the lower notes. Also don't turn bass up on the headunit, that will give a dirty signal to the amp which will cause distortion and damage the sub. I got a complete Skar audio system in my car btw. I'm running TX68's all around, 2 Skar SDR 10's, RP1200 & RP75.4 amps. It sounds great
First of All if your hooked up an Phone Aux that is paired to your phones volume if the volume on the phone is down check the app your using and make sure the apps volume is all the way up like the volume on youtube as well. OR Did you tie into the front Chanel RCA the hook up from your head unit If it doesn't have specific RCA's For The Bass Then the next best thing would be to use the Rear RCA,s its been a while but the Bass Signal used to be associated with the LR channel. 80 % sure its your Phone or the app volume. If you get a new head unit Kenwood KENWOOD KDC-X705 my fav tried and true.
Another thing to do (obviously won’t fix the head unit issues) but go on your settings in the iPhone and go to music and set equalizer to “Late Night” …. Another problem you may have is that the RCA in the head unit is for front stage and not bass. Most modern head units have a subwoofer specific RCA output, older ones won’t have that, and you’ll have to run a DSP or crossover or something of that nature… not 100% sure on that but I’m pretty certain I’ve heard that said before
Need a new radio, but make sure when your phone is on AUX, just like Blue Tooth, turn the volume button all the way up on your phone otherwise it won’t send its full volume to the head unit. Unless you are on CarPlay, you have to use the volume buttons on your phone for Bluetooth and Aux too. The LPF tells the subwoofer what to play. If it’s turned up to 80 hertz, the subwoofer will play 80 hertz and below, it limits the top end. The Subsonic tells the subwoofer not to play below a certain frequency. In a sealed box like Chomper, you won’t need it, but in a ported box, playing far below the tuning frequency could damage the subwoofer because you could unload the voice coil and blow the subwoofer. I’d recommend about 25 hertz on the subsonic since your box is tuned around 30 hertz.
Go through your radio settings to see if you have a aux level to turn up. I had head units that had them and you have to adjust your volume on your phone too.
Always create your own ground when installing an amplifier. Never utilize anything else that was present. Best thing I could suggest is drilling a hole through the floor, using a grommet and grounding it to the frame of the truck. Also, never use T-taps on anything
There should be a setting in the radio that will have fm/am output, cd output, aux output, etc.. find aux output and turn that all the way up or wherever desired. Someone else probably just used the radio and found the am/fm output and turned that up already.
That's not how you do it so you need to connect the stereo amp in the front to the amplifier in the back then connect the subwoofer to the amplifier connect the bas switch to the amplifier in the back and that's it bro wait I forgot something connect the battery to the amplifier
Most radios have a auxiliary volume output setting or if bluetooth then a bt volume output .. and also you can bridge the amp and get all the power the amp can give
The Kenwood head-units are amazing. The amount of tuning you can do is out of this world. These newer cars though, it's almost impossible to fit an aftermarket head-unit anymore and the signal to the amp suffers because of that.
I subscribed and each source could have a volume level in your menu on your headunit. My JVC has adjustments for each source. Radio is a fixed volume level so that might be why your radio is louder then your auxiliary jack. Just find the volume level on your headunit. It might only be adjustable when your have aux selected. Also the EVL or American Bass XFL or NVX is better than a Skar SDR.
it’s most likely something going on with your input balancer, its most likely in the negatives for your aux. idk how to change it on a single din but on touch screen double din’s theres an option where you can adjust it.
Turn your LPF to 80 hz half way is 125hz so back it down to about 10 o'clock. SUBSONIC is a high pass filter to 30 hz half is 25 hz so 1 o'clock position would be 30 hz. Its hard on the amp if you dont set your filters and doesn't sound as clean🤙
The Aux port may not be getting enough signal, could be a cable issue or the port on the aux. A newer head unit would be best, there should be some tuning options on the amp you can use to fine tune the sub. As I have installed car audio throughout the years I used Linkin Park's Nobody Listening to tune the system. There is a great range of low end, mids and highs to allow you to fine tune the head unit further.
I would definitely try going up on the low pass filter, atleast 1/3 of the way no more than half you be the judge of what you think sounds good. Only because you dont have all the proper tools to sent your amp up
do a quick google search on using a multimeter to tune you gain, easy maths will get you close. LPF can be tuned up to around 80hz but at 50hz you are losing a ton of output due to the roll off, trust me and set an 80hz test tone on youtube and then adjust the LPF and around 80-90hz the output will be a huge increase. Leave the boost alone like you did, it should never be used like you were told. Once you adjust the LPF and make sure the headunit is also set to 80 or 100hz for roll off it will increase output wildly.
bass boost is a no-no in cardio you will eventually go into protect mode and whenever you put your ground wherever you put it at make sure that you take the paint off or whatever you put it out because it’s not gonna get a true ground on it that will eventually go into protect mode too, and you will have problems
Yeah you need your output from the radio isn't loud enough. I have the same exact amp on a 12 inch sub and it jumps out of the box. At this point you have nothing to lose by using the bass boost. That is what I did with mine and it was like night and day with the output. I am still using my stock radio and it works great. I used a LOC and things are great I can't even turn my radio to max volume because the bass is just that heavy. I don't have my BASS on my radio turn to 50%
Well depending on if you have Factory inside speakers you might want to change those out and put in a 4-channel amp on your door speakers and rear speakers you'll get a lot better quality sound
Get a single din pioneer radio they work amazing for a subwoofer setup but you can’t turn it all the way up or it will distort and if you roll your front windows atleast half way down it will get louder also you shouldn’t add bass to the sub from the radio
TRY TURNING THE SOURCE LEVEL VOLUME UP IN THE SETTINGS ON UR KENWOOD HEAD UNIT...ALSO MAKE SURE THE LOUD SETTING IS ON HIGH ON THE KENWOOD & TURN UR PHONE VOLUME ALL THE WAY UP WHEN U PLAY MUSIC
I’d say put a 40 hertz test tone through the head unit and tune ur amp that way to see if you can get some more out of it! Got the 12 inch version for my bronco
That looks like a great set up my friend. Love the video. Definitely get yourself a new head unit would help tremendously another thing I found was trying the box in different directions sometimes facing the back causes distortion. Maybe try flipping it upward I found in my truck it sounded a lot better great video keep up the good work.
hpf should be set to 80 hz. for the door speakers in the head unit, it cuts the bass out of the speakers. bass boost should be off. playing music at max volume will introduce distortion, which is bad for the sub. when setting the gain on the amp, the bass knob must be all the way up. and your your volume issue between sources is a setting in the deck, source or input volume.
Head unit wattage output isn’t great I would recommend the Pinoneer avh1550nex or the dmhw2770new ran them in both my truck with plenty of different setups sub wise. Had a 15, 18, 12, and duals 10’s on both headunits no issues
Definitely sounding like a head unit issue. I upgraded to a Sony MEX-N5300BT in my Square and it’s a lot better than the cheapo Kenwood that was in it before.
10:34 it’s in your setting when your plug up with phone go to the settings and adjust the stuff around should have a custom one where you can adjust from like 40hz -8khz and adjust the sub also if it similar radio to mine
Upgrade the head unit plus door speakers and get some super tweeters and yea turn up the gain and subsonic on amp and watch the tail end start shaking like a stripper
You have your trigger wire hooked to your antenna. Trust me I'm 100% sure of this. I'm a 12 volt tech 17 year experienced installer. You don't need a new deck just move your remote turn on wire off your antenna wire
Also, when you metioned the static when you raise the volume thats called distortion. When i have my volume at 37 thats where my distortion comes on. Alot of people change door speakers and run a custom amp which is what i will be doing
@Imfscrew- Just for reference, i have 30+ years of experience, in the car audio competition scene. First, what is the Model # of this deck/source unit? Second, does this unit have a dedicated Sub RCA pre-out? If this deck/source unit, has a set of Rear/Sub, RCA pre-out's, go into the Audio settings, and it should have the option of rear, or subwoofer, select subwoofer, then there should be a sub gain adjustment available, in your deck's audio settings( example: my deck's sub output adj. goes from -24 to +6 ) on the contrary to what some might think, 0 is not all the way up, and +6 is not a 6Db gain over 0.. What ever is the highest sub output level, that is what you should set it too, and adjust the amplifier gain to match that. Also in the decks settings, there should be an option for the LPF= Low pass filter settings, that should have choices like 30Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz, 60Hz, 70Hz, 80Hz, 90Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, 160Hz, and or 200Hz. Most people use the 80Hz LPF setting, and run the -6Db per octave slope to smoothly blend into your full range speakers, as that is the standard for Thx certified home audio, as the x-over point, between subwoofers, and full range speakers. The volume being different using your phone( 1st make sure your phone volume is turned up), then go into the decks Audio settings, and go to Volume offset, and adjust this setting to its highest setting, or @ least higher than the radio sensitivity. This has a Cd player , you should be able to adjust your Volume offset settings to match the output of a very well recorded Cd, like Dixie Chicks, the Cd with the song, Wide Open Spaces= great Sq disc by the way. Also on your amp settings, turn your subsonic filter all the way down to off, which is not really off by the way. Then the amps LPF= Low Pass Filter, turn that all the way up to 220Hz, but only if you have LPF settings on/in your deck, then this will allow you to adjust where you want the LPF set, up front, again on your deck LPF setting i suggest 80Hz, @ -6Db per octave slope. And set your front and rear full range speakers high passed= HPF @ 120 Hz, @ -24Db per octave. Please turn down your bass settings to flat, with no bass boost. You should not need to do that after getting all of these settings, and x-over points right. Hope to get this decks model #, thanks.
The 30 day truck seems to have become a keeper
Yes, you definitely need a new head unit! That will allow you to actually tune that sub to its optimal frequency. After you figure out your preferred range you can tune the amp at the same frequency. You should never have to turn anything to it's max.
Yea… upgrading the door speakers may also help. Besides the head unit I would recommend shorting up your ground wire. I don’t think I’ve ever tuned the sub using a head unit. I must be an idiot.
To mess with the crossovers
@@mingomane1I know right 😂 that's what a dsp is for leave all that shit on the hu and bass boost on the amp off

That big space needs 2 15s. Some radios you can turn the source volume up or down. Meaning turn whatever aux or Bluetooth volume up and down.
people like to hear the music
@@xdura4350that's why you upgrade the door speakers
Exactly 💯👍

i got a single 12" sounding like 2 15s w my box lmao
Love the install. I would suggest putting a grommet around the power wire so it does not wear through and case an issue.
Back in the day Best Buy ran the power wire right on the exhaust manifold. That’s when I learned how to do my own stuff lol

It's your head unit buddy I had the same problem and I had to replace the head unit and it fixed the problem and it has been working good ever since
Literally just bought this same set up for my 4Runner. Still working through install. I’m having problems with my newer kenwood head unit as well.
Always go for pioneer for head units, no one makes better head units than pioneer. I’ve tried and tested all.
A head unit with dedicated subwoofer preamp outputs will make all the difference. The basic point without going into it too much is that will allow you to take the bass out of your door speakers and the treble out of your sub. That's 100% what you need, I'd recommend a mid level Pioneer head unit.

That’s because your source volume for aux is low. In my head unit there is option for source volume I don’t know if older units have that option. Check in settings if you have that option if not go for pioneer.
I love how the cowl hood looks on the obs. Subs sound great 👌💪
Is your amplifier gain level adjusted correctly because if its not up correctly it might not sound as loud as it should. Get a PAC ground isolator 10× the rca booster. Caddy roof racks on the obs would look good
I’m curious to see that. I’m more of a slick top fan. No rails or racks.
Glad you kept the truck them boggers look good on that truck also yeah new head unit and proper tune that single 15 will rock that truck for sure
Great job bro. I love seeing videos of real people opinions on skar in any other brand ran along with it
I used to a have a SKAR SDR 18” in my 02’ F150. That thing was so cool and fun. I definitely recommend you getting one

Front aux level gain may need boosted. Generally, most aftermarket head units have a -6 to 0 to +6 adjustment. The fm may be at max while aux is 0.
First of All if your hooked up an Phone Aux that is paired to your phones volume if the volume on the phone is down check the app your using and make sure the apps volume is all the way up like the volume on youtube as well. That sounds pretty much what his problem stems from
The intro was dope
Go into the settings and look for the sub controller part of the head unit. I have the same kenwood, and it sounds amazing.

U have to flip the bass eq switch up more for those skar amp to hit
Yeah you need your output from the radio isn't loud enough.
I have the same exact amp on a 12 inch sub and it jumps out of the box.
At this point you have nothing to lose by using the bass boost.
That is what I did with mine and it was like night and day with the output.
I am still using my stock radio and it works great.
I used a LOC and things are great I can't even turn my radio to max volume because the bass is just that heavy.
I don't have my BASS on my radio turn to 50%
On some head units you have to change the radii to subwoofer or rear output also is the volume on you phone up
You need a head unit with Bluetooth so you can adjust the source volume level adjustment
That power wire definitely needs to be crimped, not squished with pliers
Antenna wire
I recommend getting a pioneer DEH S4220 head unit because I have a 8” skar sub and I used that one and I put it to 17 vol and it sounded great
Well depending on if you have Factory inside speakers you might want to change those out and put in a 4-channel amp on your door speakers and rear speakers you'll get a lot better quality sound
Get a single din pioneer radio they work amazing for a subwoofer setup but you can’t turn it all the way up or it will distort and if you roll your front windows atleast half way down it will get louder also you shouldn’t add bass to the sub from the radio
I definitely would’ve drilled a bigger hole to run a grommet for the power wire coming off the positive.
TRY TURNING THE SOURCE LEVEL VOLUME UP IN THE SETTINGS ON UR KENWOOD HEAD UNIT...ALSO MAKE SURE THE LOUD SETTING IS ON HIGH ON THE KENWOOD & TURN UR PHONE VOLUME ALL THE WAY UP WHEN U PLAY MUSIC
Could you make a video talking about why an OBS SUV would be a great family car and the pluses and downsides of it
Big skar fan here
The brake in period is long but it will sound better after that
I just recently installed a skar 10 500rms. With about 370rms 1600x2 amp
I picked up a decent pioneer double den. (Pioneer DMH-120bt). Gives you eq settings and alot of other stuff. Good unit for a good price
That head unit might have an aux on off setting in the menu options too
Would definitely recommend Sony for single din or a boss bcpa9 is perfect for a huge display
hpf should be set to 80 hz. for the door speakers in the head unit, it cuts the bass out of the speakers. bass boost should be off. playing music at max volume will introduce distortion, which is bad for the sub. when setting the gain on the amp, the bass knob must be all the way up. and your your volume issue between sources is a setting in the deck, source or input volume.
We're you put that ground it can burn your amp up try one of the bolts that hold the set down
This is well deserved for denim!🔊
Head unit wattage output isn’t great I would recommend the Pinoneer avh1550nex or the dmhw2770new ran them in both my truck with plenty of different setups sub wise. Had a 15, 18, 12, and duals 10’s on both headunits no issues
Tune your amp. Adjust your gain
Turn phone volume up, and look at your head unit subwoofer and equalizer settings....Try turninn loudness on
When connected to your aux….seems kind of obvious…but make sure the volume on your phone is turned all the way up
Definitely sounding like a head unit issue. I upgraded to a Sony MEX-N5300BT in my Square and it’s a lot better than the cheapo Kenwood that was in it before.
Buy a cheap rockville head unit. They have strong clear aux signal. Good sound just low power 10wx4 longs the doors are factory it will sound good
U should have a gain in setting in deck
For aux vol or gain
Was your phone volume up?
Couldn’t be because once he put the volume up on his phone then sound would’ve popped out
10:34 it’s in your setting when your plug up with phone go to the settings and adjust the stuff around should have a custom one where you can adjust from like 40hz -8khz and adjust the sub also if it similar radio to mine
Did you turn up your volume on your phone?
Upgrade the head unit plus door speakers and get some super tweeters and yea turn up the gain and subsonic on amp and watch the tail end start shaking like a stripper
I had this exact same setup in my f150 sold it for 2 Skar 12 evls which hit way harder than
You have your trigger wire hooked to your antenna. Trust me I'm 100% sure of this. I'm a 12 volt tech 17 year experienced installer. You don't need a new deck just move your remote turn on wire off your antenna wire
U may have the option to turn up ur aux volume in the settings
If you like this type of content thats all i do on my channel. Great vid man.
