Remember that this started out as a passion project for them, with very basic equipment. Once they saw how popular is became, they really improved and focused on it. Gets soooooo much better down the line.
First few episodes are a bit rough compared to how good they get later. Also that was m. Night Shyamalan, so, even he was thrown off by the plot twist of goku having a child 😅
Now this is where the fun begins
Raditz's attack was originally called Double Sunday. The guy who voices him in Dragon Ball Z Abridged liked the dub which changed the attack name to Keep your eye on the Birdy.

This is longer than 13 years old, the video was taken down at some point and was reuploaded in 2013. It series first premiered in 2008.
Facts. I was deployed in 2013 and I remember at some point during that deployment, watching episode 34 a couple days after it came out. And the series was years old already at that time.
"That Guy" with the South Park Canadian animation was M. Night Shyamalan.
It gets way better. You’ll see how much they truly love Dragon Ball as they go forward and they find their footing with how the series progresses.

The first couple episodes are pretty rough, but they really start to fi d their writing style pretty quick. And hy the time they get to Namek its pure gold.
They poke fun at the source material while, at the same time, respecting it when they have to and even adding to it sometimes. I remember in the Android saga when Kami has reservations about joining with Piccolo, he went deeper than the original did, and it hit different.
Great video. DB Z introduced me into the genre. I was so close to visiting Japan one point myself. I had experience with MoCap and in late 2015 I was in contact with Capcom about the facial likeness role of Leon for the Resident Evil 2 Remake. I failed to mention I also have a voice acting background, in the end I lost the part and I can't forgive myself for wasting such an opportunity to visit the place that inspired artists like Toriyama San. R.I.P.
Master Roshi's OJ/Beer joke is actually a meta joke poking fun at the censorship outside of Japan. acholic drinks would be recolored and called something else.

As a lifelong DBZ fan (46). You will love this. Especially Piccolo/Nail/Kami, Vegeta and Popo. They really pay tribute to Gohan when he goes SSJ2 (music). The first season is a little rough (audio wise) but man, its gets sooooo good after that.

The people who made this are pretty big Dragon Ball fans and that becomes more and more clear as the series continues and they cut down on the references that get outdated. A lot of jokes can be hard to catch if you didn't see Dragon Ball (won't get into them since some of them can be spoilers), and just weird dub choices. For example the bit with Roshi drinking different things is because in the original he had beer but the ocean dub changed it to something else. The fighting over the mic was highlighting some minor in fighting, but it also had to do with the Dragon Ball dub changing attack names/ outright just not giving them attack names, so in the dub Raditz says (keep your eyes on the birdy) instead of saying the attack move, which is Double Sunday. Season 1 is mostly outdated jokes that do have funny moments but it is hard to get to them. Season 2 is based more on comedy that doesn't really age. Season 3 is focused more on developing the abridged characters, and making jokes here and there, but it can be less funny at times and more abridging what happens in the series just with how their characters developed which are slightly different than the characters were use to from Z, Super, etc.)
The "what a twist" moment" is M. Night Shyamalan. That is what he is known for.
Also. The quality improves and early inside jokes eventually go away. They do a lot of call backs to videos done before they were team four star. And the editor masters his craft by season 3.
It's good to be going in blind and experience it like we all did when it came out. TFS started this as just a pet project for fun. The more popular the videos got, the more time, energy skill and effort went into each video. The release schedule went from every other week, to every month to months between episodes. Compared to how they finished the series, even the creators find the early episodes a little rough to watch now.
TFS are huge fans and have watched both the subs and the dubs and there are many jokes referring to translations and different changes made like the argument between "Double Sunday" and "Watch the birdie."
oh man I am wathcing EVERY damn episode of this series! It's very low budget at the start, but it gets so much better. Enjoy you guys!

The change in the drink that Roshi was holding was actually what happened. Japan originally had him drinking beer. However, the U.S. censors wouldn't approve of it because of children being able to watch the series. So they were required to change it for them. It changed a couple of times, hence why it changed color.
The argument they had added to the abridged version was because the name of Raditz attack changed in the dub. It was a crazy long name before Funimation bought the rights to the show. Then 1 dub has it as "Keep Your Eye on the Birdie" while another calls it "A Double Sunday." They were poking fun at the different names that his attack, which no one ever sees, was given.

Keep in mind this was a passion project concocted by a group of teenagers in 2008, when UA-cam was in its infancy, so the quality gets MUCH better as the episodes go along. It is truly amazing.
I actually started watching DBZA in 2010 as a 13 year old brazillian kid who barely knew any English. If I could laugh at their jokes then, I'm sure both of you will have a blast. Just recommend watching maybe 2 episodes per video (maybe from episode 3 onwards) since each episode is so short

The further into the series you get, the quality, writing & voice acting get better and better. I only watch dragon ball in sub, but around the Namek saga onward, I prefer TFS over funimation for english dubs.
The creators are insanely knowledgeable about Dragon Ball as well. The references and jokes they make are deep cuts. You'd have to watch all of og dragon ball thru super in sub and dub and read the manga to catch all their jokes and references.
Team Four Star's SSJ2 Gohan transformation is the best english dub version of the scene, period.

The early commentary and audio is good but as they progress it all gets soooo much better!
I highly recommend that you also watch the movies and specials in release order alongside the episodes. There are some great jokes and plot lines that first appear in those videos and get referenced in the main story as well as other movies and specials.
DBZA is definitely rough around the edges in the first season, but it was also made at a point when abridged parodies were kind of new to the scene, so that's largely do to being a product of its time. TFS was diligent though and polished this rock into a beautiful gem.

This part of the series is like season 1 of The Office. It's harder to get through but it picks up A LOT pretty quickly. Once Nappa and Vegeta make it to earth, it gets really good from there and always gets better. Trust me bro, you'll love it. And I'm saying that as someone who usually HATES parodies. This one is VERY well done
It picks up around the arrival of the Ginyus on Namek.
The quality goes from 0 to 60 to 100 very quickly!

Season 1 was definitely of its era.most people who stick with abridged,look understandably bored watching it,with a couple chuckles here n there,and not knowing jokes cause of there age

I remember showing my friends this when it first released! We’re all in our mid 30s now and still quote the whole series all the time.

Abridged really tells the story with a great twist, but i will warn you that the first...season ish is a little rough compared to some things we have out now. But stick with it and you wont regret it.

They really find their stride around episode 10-15. Episode 30 and on cemented them as legends
Yeah, a lot of the jokes are references and were kind of specific to the era. Although, you could tell that they were trying to figure out their handle on the earlier episodes, they're such clever writers that tons of the jokes are still hilarious even if some of the references miss.
DBZA improves over time for certain. It also does a lot of memes and what not that were going around at the time of that episode's creation. So a lot of jokes will be outdate early on, but it's a great way to watch DBZ!

The bit with Master Roshi’s drink was making fun of all the different official dubs because it was changed from the original Japanese to the Ocean Dub, then the Funimation dub, then the Kai dub, etc because of various censorship reasons
