I'd sin the fact that it's called 'Brave' when the movie doesn't really give much context into bravery. Wouldn't have made a lot more sense to title the movie 'Fate' or something?
To be fair she did change a bit. The mother who was against violence had to use it at the final fight. The princess who was against tradition and order has to use that to reason with everyone. This movie showed comprise
Sarah Walter Actually the princess who was against tradition and order simply insisted she would marry whoever she chose in her own time. And everyone just agreed with her.
Not John Cena I see your point and raise a point. There's a difference between not wanting to do something and being trapped in an arranged marriage. She would have had to leave home for a dude she doesn't even like and just forget it if she was then required to have sex with him to bear and then raise his child. So she played their game and played for her own hand and even THAT wasn't good enough. So yeah she was desperate and fed her mother a weird pastry, but it wasn't like it was a chemical injection. At best it would have just made her a little loopy, but compliant enough for her to agree the marriage off. Who could have predicted it was a bear serum? Merida was reckless yes, but an asshole? I personally wouldn't go that far, but again I see your point.
Wesley Wallace Dude, the cake came out of a bubbling couldron filled with thick green liquid and had zero trace of said strange liquid when pulled out. Merida gave no fucks whether it could kill her or worse. The shack DISSAPPEARED after the she left and she heard the lady even say she forgot a crucial detail. Shes an asshole. Can't get around that.
"Can we just say the Wisps are the antagonists of this movie?" Considering Will o the Wisps were swamp gas and following them typically meant you wandered into a swap drowned, so in myth and tradition people were told *never to follow them* yes, yes we can call them the antagonists. With Merida an all her assholery running a close second.
1:39 I work with ponies and horses a lot. They constant roll around in the dirt. It cools them down and just simply enjoy doing it. That's normal for horses and ponies
Not the magic itself, more the fact that magic will (as in a lot of these movies) be the same old tired problem and solution to everything in the film.
Fun fact: in the original draft of Mulan, the writers had her join the army to escape an arranged marriage. But then they changed it cuz they realized that was selfish and stupid...i guess Pixar's writers didn't reach the same conclusion..
HAhahaha no will 'o wisps are apart of celtic mythology, they're fae.Depending on the area depends on what they do. In ireland they're the dead and each color represents a different type of dead. Don't quote me on this but, white is a mother and child, blue is a more mature child, and red is a man. I can't recall what they're in all the celtic cultures. But ik that the "fae" are deadly or more brutal in ireland and more harmless in wales and celtic myth would become more infused with christianity turning the fae more demon like.Idk much about scottish myth but i think they follow celtic myths because you see a lot of what look to be celtic crosses in the movie.
I wish people would take the extra second to hit reply to the person who they're talking too. Seriously just scroll over their comment and hit, "Reply". Not that hard lol.
It did lead her into the creepy woods to a witch, and then to a murderous bear. Those fuckers were definitely trying to off her and at the end, realized it was just easier to help her.
ztslovebird From what I've heard, people usually just stumble into those if they were out too late at night, but I might be wrong. Myths tend to cross over with each other.
Literally, it's because "Scottish people are just average white people with no culture or language so we have to give them an accent" but frozen is set in 19th century Norway and all of them speak like 21st century Americans? Hello?
The bow was a gift from Merida's father, it's actually not too loose to let the princess have her own horse, and I'm guessing either Elinor was hoping the lessons would naturally create boundaries or even Elinor could see that Merida's not princess material and that not letting her have the one day (explicitly stated by Merida) where she could do whatever would cause her to snap.
I hate that people call this movie a disappointment. I really enjoyed it. Great animation, soundtrack, culture, and cool action. The story was fun, i liked the relationship between Merida and her mother. And the bear plot was cool imo. It had some scary moments too, the muscular demon bear Mordu was pretty scary. And the witch is Boo from Monsters Inc, the Pixar theory connects it all. 🐻🏹🏴
*What I expected when I first saw the trailers and posters of this film: A funny animated fantasy film about a warrior princess who embarks on an epic quest across her kingdom to show her courage and change her fate while facing supernatural dangers based on celtic mythology. *What I actually got: "Turning Red + Brother Bear" set in medieval Scotland... Nice graphics and a cute mother-daughter relationship, but honestly, it feels just too empty, short and full of wasted potential. I was expecting something more like "Mulan + Legend of Zelda", with more adventure and fantasy stuff... I think that Wolfwalkers (a Cartoon Saloon movie) is what Brave should have been from the beginning, it has more emotion, fantasy and it didn't felt empty or short.
Matthew Calder Actually, they WERE native to Britain until about 1000 years ago, and the last remnants WERE in the Scottish forests. As this seems to depict pre-Roman times, I'm thinking possible. Anyone correct me if they think this occurred after the extinction.
I would agree with you, Tessie7e, because the style of castle and boats points to a time when the Scotland area was semi-recently inhabited. Also, my grandma was born in scotland, so I know things. :3
actually the 'log tossing' is taking place because it's at the Highland games. it's called caber tossing as the young lord mcguffin says. no hate please just saying as a Scottish Person...
+Thewifeswapped I mean, if I was a Scottish Lord dragging a large portion of my clan off on a boat trip, I'd probably want more entertainment than one pissy archery contest that only three dudes are allowed to enter...
i'm surprised the didn't use the fact Mor'du is the evil brother who also transformed into a bear for similar reasons for a "this has all happened before cliche"
I hope it's a joke ? It's overrated as hell. Most people loved it and claimed "Finally a strong independent Disney Princess !" which is completely untrue. For a lot of people I know it's their favourite one for this very untrue reason.
Agreed, I have always loved it! It really did show the first princess who wasn't excited about the whole marriage thing and fought to change that crap.

+Raphael Luck Lucas Well... I don't think there will be over at least five sins for Zootopia because of how well it's been selling. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 99% Certified Fresh rating.
It's funny, ever since I started watching you I've looked for every mistake in TV shows to movies. I literally was watching KC Undercover and went "The guy you were built to trust was the evil guy all along cliche." I think I've realized why people call me crazy...
That is actually not good because most of these "cliches" dont mean bad storytelling. If you would make a movie without all of these "cliches" you would get a shit movie. And a cliche also is not a mistake. CinemaSins does point out some right things but most sins are either factually wrong or not understanding the actual plot or about not understanding metaphors/charcater building. "Ding - movie gives us clear visual representation of how that charcater is." Yes, and that is a good thing. Symbolism is important because a movie without it would really suck.
Ugh no this movie is so frustrating! The animation is amaaazing and I like the few songs they have in it, but Merida is so cruel and selfish and treats her mother horribly. Drugging her mom and then mocking her for not knowing how to be a bear, and she has no character arc whatsoever throughout the movie. It would be one thing if they had made her mom still be able to talk as a bear, so they could have actual conversations and learn about each other and come to understand and respect each other and grow closer because of it. But because they couldn’t really communicate with each other, the end of the movie where they’re suddenly bonded is totally unearned and not believable at all. Merida was just an asshole the entire movie and then got everything she wanted anyway. I wanted this movie to be good SO MUCH and instead I just felt so sorry for the mom the whole time, it made me want to cry. I hate this movie.
you know what would be cool? a healthy father-daughter against the world relationship thing where instead of locking her up he would've actually listened for a godamned second
I'm glad I'm not the only one who took off his 3D glasses and said, "This is Brother Bear. This is literally Brother Bear in Scottland. They tricked us with the trailers."
the "horse dog" sin shouldn't be a sin because horses actually get on the ground and roll around. It grinds dust and dirt into their coat which keeps away large biting insects and can provide extra warmth in the winter. Also one would assume its a great back scratcher.
JohnTheGospel the sin is there's a truck carving in a movie that takes place 2000 years before that truck was even made and totally breaks the illusion

To be fair she did change a bit. The mother who was against violence had to use it at the final fight. The princess who was against tradition and order has to use that to reason with everyone. This movie showed comprise
Sarah Walter I wouldn't call that compromise. I'd call it both sides desisting from being assholes.
Sarah Walter Actually the princess who was against tradition and order simply insisted she would marry whoever she chose in her own time. And everyone just agreed with her.
Not John Cena
I see your point and raise a point.
Wesley Wallace totally agree. Thank YOU. If she’s considered an asshole for fighting for her future, So be it. But I definitely don’t see it that way.
"Can we just say the Wisps are the antagonists of this movie?" Considering Will o the Wisps were swamp gas and following them typically meant you wandered into a swap drowned, so in myth and tradition people were told *never to follow them* yes, yes we can call them the antagonists. Am I the only one who can't hear will-o-the-wisps without immediately thinking about the Pokémon move?

It did lead her into the creepy woods to a witch, and then to a murderous bear. Those fuckers were definitely trying to off her and at the end, realized it was just easier to help her.

Merida is the only Disney princess to have an accent correlating with where she’s from.

half expected him to point out if the mom wanted Merida to be proper, why give her a bow, horse, and no boundaries
All of that, in addition to apparently letting her not wear a corset for most of her life.
tecnically her farher gave her
The bow was a gift from Merida's father, it's actually not too loose to let the princess have her own horse, and I'm guessing either Elinor was hoping the lessons would naturally create boundaries or even Elinor could see that Merida's not princess material and that not letting her have the one day (explicitly stated by Merida) where she could do whatever would cause her to snap.
As I am Scottish myself, the accent is completely accurate, also the huge bear prince in the movie scared the shit out of me in every scene it was in.
Ellie Is Musical Trash that’s cos the voice actress is Scottish
Merida and the father are both Scottish actors ;)
I hate that people call this movie a disappointment. I really enjoyed it. Great animation, soundtrack, culture, and cool action. The story was fun, i liked the relationship between Merida and her mother. And the bear plot was cool imo. It had some scary moments too, the muscular demon bear Mordu was pretty scary.
And the witch is Boo from Monsters Inc, the Pixar theory connects it all.

I think that Wolfwalkers (a Cartoon Saloon movie) is what Brave should have been from the beginning, it has more emotion, fantasy and it didn't felt empty or short.
how about adding like ten sins for the fact that bears are not native to Scotland?
Matthew Calder Actually, they WERE native to Britain until about 1000 years ago, and the last remnants WERE in the Scottish forests. As this seems to depict pre-Roman times, I'm thinking possible. Anyone correct me if they think this occurred after the extinction.
I would agree with you, Tessie7e, because the style of castle and boats points to a time when the Scotland area was semi-recently inhabited. Also, my grandma was born in scotland, so I know things. :3
