My goal is to become a competent Biomedical Engineer so that I partake in the maintenance of dialysis machines, however seeing that engineering mathematics is a key element in the courses, I feel that such a goal is unlikely due to my level of mathematical knowledge. It's truly disheartening.
Miss Sara l want to be like u. I am now entering senior high school and it's been mi dream to be a biomedical engineering student at the university of Pennsylvania and l am going to follow mi dreams although I am in Ghana and then l will make sure l study hard and become a great person like u l know it will not be easy to come to America and study over there but l know God will make a way
I loveeeee this degree...I have a background in radiology and massage therapy..I think I would fly through this degree since I understand the human body!!! Awesome review!!!!! Thank u for sharing!!!!
@Heyimayana Vlog, are you in the US? If yes, you can get into medical school essentially with ANY undergraduate degree. It doesn't have to be biomedical engineering. You just need to complete the pre-requisite courses (which you should check with your college pre-med advisor). I am a senior in Biomedical engineering thinking about applying to medical school next year. Biomedical engineering really does give you a unique way of visualizing/understanding the body and how it functions. If the plan is to attend medical school after, it might be helpful as in that you will have an engineering perspective of the body and its systems. In my university, most of the requirements to get into the Biomedical Engineering program are the same as the Pre-med requirements, like General and Organic Chemistry, Physics for Science and Engineers, College biology. But you might still have to take human anatomy and physiology if it is not offered in your engineering program but is required by the medical school you are thinking of applying to. Of which, most medical schools require or recommend those. If you don't mind me giving a piece of advice, if you like the idea of Biomedical engineering and are ready to work smart and hard, go with it, keep in mind that it is quite challenging and you need to have stellar GPA if you want to go to medical school. So it won't be an easy path, BUT YOU CAN DO IT. Do not rush yourself. It doesn't really depend on which is better, it depends on which one you believe you will enjoy. As a biomedical engineering student, i am exposed to stuff like this; a) signal processing, so like understanding what certain sinusoidal waves mean like brain waves, b) biosystems: the electrical concepts such electric circuit set ups of pulse oximeters to calculate your oxygen saturation, amplifying signals etc; c) design a biomedical device and all the aspects and paperwork that come with it; d) programming; e) physiology and anatomy for engineers; f) biomechanics of the body- understanding the forces in the body and how they work. Feel free to respond, if you need anymore guidance :)
Hey Inez! I got a reply from Sara. She says: "you can. I worked as an undergraduate researcher in a lab that focuses on cancer drug therapeutics. So there are cancer research opportunities in Biomedical Engineering. Specifically on nanotechnology, the research I supported included working with nanoparticles to deliver drug therapy. There is opportunity to do it through biomedical engineering. You would just need to find the right lab because there is a variety of research on different topics. However, another option too is to do your bachelors in a related engineering topic (just an example: materials engineering) and then get your PhD in biomedical engineering to work on this type of research as well. Many paths you can take."
I want to do a Master in Biomedical engineering in Vienna. They have specialisations in 1. Medical Physics and Imaging 2. Biomechanics In which field can i work later with these two options? Thanks!
Hi I’m planning on pressuring a bachelor degree in computer science but I’m also interested in bio medical engineering. Would it be best too double major and do both or pick one.
Hey Naeemah! I don't necessarily think you need to double major if you want to work in the biomedical field. Maybe you can major in computer science and take some biomed classes. Or better yet, I would suggest talking to a biomed lab or company and see what opportunities are available for computer scientists/ Networking! Hope this was helpful!! Good luck!
Hi! I was wondering what did you end up pressuring? I am exactly in that situation, I'm planning on pressuring an engineering and can't decide between computer science or biomedical :/
Absolutely!!! There shouldn’t be any problem with that:) I’m not sure about the best universities in the world. But I think I’m going to make a video about « the best underrated engineering universities in the world »
Hey Gregory! I don't know anything about it but what you could do is look up some biomedical labs/professors at a university that does biomed research that interests you, then look up where the biomed professors at that university are publishing. Chances are that they're submitting papers to some cool conferences! Good luck!
Hii... Thank you so much for your video about biomedical engineering. I am now a third year student at that major in Malaysia. Can you please give me some advice on which skill a biomedical engineering student should be master at before enter industry and do you have any tips to get a job for a fresh graduate. Thanks in advance.
most grad level bme requires an understanding in chemistry all the way through organic, biology all the way to molecular and cellular, and intro to physics 1-2
It's just a generic rotational program within her company. Usually, they're called "graduate trainee" programs. But I will ask her the exact name and get back to you:)
Hey David, saw your post. I am Sara in the video. Nice to meet you. The rotational program is a leadership development program in quality engineering. A lot of engineering companies offer rotational programs in different ways - one location/3 different departments/3 different jobs/3 years, multiple locations/6 jobs/total 3 jobs and 6 months each/6 different departments, etc. My rotation is 3 different positions in quality engineering over 3 years in 3 different locations. The exact rotation is "Quality Engineering Rotational Program" but if you search "engineering rotational programs" on google or even reddit you will find a few examples. Good luck!
STEMinine sorry Jess, I want to clarify. I have not heard of a rotational program being called a "graduate trainee" program though I may be wrong and may depend on the company. The concept is a program that offers mentorship, technical development, and leadership development for long term success within the engineering industry. It is a full time job not an internship or the like. Hope that helps clarify.
Thanks so much Sara for taking the time to answer! Y'a it's also called a "rotational program" in Canada but in Europe we call it "graduate trainee" and it's a transition program that lets you work in many different sectors within a company that allows you to find your best fit in the company. Probably the programs are slightly different between Norh America and Europe:)
is there any opportunity for a mechanical engineer to be involved in higher study related to cancer research? if so, then how? i just completed my bachelor degree in mechanical engineering.
I think you need to figure out if you can get into a biology masters. I think that would be the best next step for you. Or talk to some labs that do cancer research and see what type of people they look for:)
Hmm, I'm not sure but I think you should be able to find these opportnities online:) probably a lot of jobs with companies that build machines that they use in hospitals.

Nice video. I am Electrical Engineering student and want to know more about biomedical engineering for masters studies. Is this right for me in future. Or I should go with electrical engineering. Please answer it. Thanks
Hmmm honestly, I dont know what is better. The only thing I can tell you is that you should choose what YOU want to do. You need to think about what's better for YOU. Because it's your life and you need to enjoy what you do:) Hope this was helpful and good luck!
Thankyou for this video! When you mentioned about the decision of doing a PhD..does it mean you can do one after getting a bachelors degree or do you have to get a masters degree ?
Hmm it depends. MOST of the time (majority) you need a masters degree first. However, I have heard of cases where people have gone from bachelors straight to PhD. But these are exceptional cases (and most of the time the students are geniuses). But honestly I would suggest doing a master's because its just 1-2 years of your life and itll help you decide if you actually want to invest another 3-6years for a PhD

Every college in canada is good. especially for the bachelors it doesn't make a difference where you study. I would suggest you think of which professors you want to work with. maybe this is how you want to make your decision.
Hi Gung! I live in Canada and universities in Canada provide great biomedical engineering programs! As far as I know, there is the Waterloo University in Ontario that offers this program and Guelph.
McGuill in MTL is probably best for overall engineering, there's McMaster, the one in Toronto, UOttawa, Queen's University… apply to many though, they're all great
