I am currently one semester away from graduating and the urge for getting a job starts kicking in! Join me as I search on LinkedIn for Biomedical Engineering jobs in medical device companies!
I also share a little about how overwhelming it is to be rejected from companies when applying, hope we can all relate!

I graduated from the BME program at UTSA and I feel your frustration. I have had the most difficult time finding work in SA. Some of my classmates got lucky and knew someone that helped get them a job but most took a super long time finding work. I'm still looking for work tbh and feeling very discouraged.
Dani By Herself Wow that must be really frustrating. I’ve gotten to learn and understand that in industry it’s really about who you know to be able to land those jobs. I’m sorry you feel discouraged, it certainly isn’t a breeze for me either. But I think one thing that should never fail is trying to attend luncheons and events and try to make the right connections!

Hello! The video was not depressing, I'm sorry you got rejected many times. Please don't give up! Maybe your salary expectation is a little too high for entry-level. My husband is a computer engineer and when he first started working at entry level I believe he started at $55,000 a year. So maybe you can reduce your salary to $60,000 a year to see if employers will be interested. As you get more experience of course your salary will go up, but this takes time. Good luck!

Yes its so dumb...3 years for entry level...entry means that you are entering the industry, I guess we all know after 3 years you definitely passed the entry level.

I wanted to ask if it is possible to persue an Ms in biomedical engineering after completing a bachelors in Biotechnology(life science).

vinod arora more than likely it is! They usually require an engineering degree or any other related biotech discipline so I don’t see why you’d have a problem. However every school has their own specific requirements, so just read over those whenever you apply :)

I recorded this video a couple of years ago, so have definitely learned a lot. For example, online applications alone don’t work 90% of the time. At least they never did for me.
Ever since I graduated, I’ve been able to find many amazing opportunities. But these have always been through my network.
My top advice is always to find an internship and to network network network! CA is a great hub of medical device companies. So attend those career fairs and luncheons (if he hasn’t already).

BME is a degree that should not have existed... bcos it only confuses and entices people into the greatness of this profession, only that it takes alot to even find a proper industry job to begin with
it's not for everyone, but it's great for a lot of people! I loved all the opportunities it opened for me.
I am a sophomore in college and I am freaking out cause I never took a calculus class and definitely want to do electrical but love BME!:(

Would a degree in bioengineering allow me to be a BME? I know it sounds weird but I honestly don't know what I can do with a bioengineering degree and I've always wanted to be a BME.

Only two semesters left. 104/144 units passed. I don't know what you guys call it in English because I have forgotten the name. After 80 units, You can actually apply to "work" in a company/hospital (But I highly doubt you'll get paid/get paid much). and for doing that you need connections. Plus as a guy I have to do my military service too... It's just too much, I only can hope that it will eventually work out in the end...
I think you should definitely try to apply to work! Trying doesn’t hurt, and that experience will be SUPER valuable no matter the pay :) Best of luck to you!!
it can be very dsicoruaging, i am a junior in bioengineering and i applied to 30+ jobs and got rejected but don't give up !

hey hi! Really liked your video! it was honest. I have a few questions. I am currently joining my summer semester for masters in biomedical engineering as I have a Biotechnology background. I am unaware about the job opportunities that BME students are eliigble for? What are the hot areas that i should focus on while pursuing my masters that can help me land into a good paying job? I really want to focus since my fisrt day of school towards getting a good job whwn i finsh my masters.
I think it will really depend on the location where you are looking to get a job. In my area, medical devices I think are the most popular industry, so definitely important to get an internship in the medical device industry!

Ive been hunting for two years and i still dont have a BME job. This major shouldnt exist, its just slingshotting newgrads into unemployment

Again, I am sorry this has been the case for you. Would love to help if possible. I personally did an internship and got a job pretty much right away (in the middle of a pandemic). So did people I know. This major exists for people passionate about the field, and many people in it enjoy it.
@@TheBMELife your experience with BME seems to be exceptionally successful, however i would argue that it is not normal fpr bme graduates to be as successful, I dont know a single person in my graduating class who is in industry as a BME
@@radnukespeoplesminds I obviously can’t speak for everyone. But I can certainly speak outside of my school too. I’m not sure if you’ve had a chance to watch our podcasts, but we have several guests who graduated from different universities. I’m not sure where you went to school, but I think maybe they didn’t emphasize enough importance in getting internships and networking, which is why you may find that your expectations have not been met. T. K Yes. I was in a research lab and then got an internship as a product development engineering at a medical device startup. I’ve been working there for over a year and they have offered me a full time position. I just decided to apply for other places to have other options as well :) but I’ll more than likely stay where I currently work. If you’re planning to go to medical school, I would let worry about finding a job. Worry about keeping your GPA high, having relevant experience for medical school and studying for the mCAT!
@@TheBMELife Well i'll have to save up money plus I gotta work for two years with my degree to get PR in that country as a student. Then only I can go to medical school. SO yeah, work is important to me. Hey how did you get into research lab and as an engineer? Did the bachelor degree alone prepared you? Did you join Co-op programme too? Did you land on the job with bachelor alone and no experience? I feel like I need to give up on BME if I won''t get job without experience and with a bachelor...So if you could tell me how you did it, I would seriously appreciate it.

Would the odds of getting accepted increase after doing an MS in biomedical engineering or is BS enough?
BS is enough, but yes you may be able to be a more competitive candidate and replace the years of industry experience with some education. But I personally went straight into industry with a BS only because I wanted to do my MS in something that would supplement BME.

I have not received any response from any of the jobs I have applied to. However, while recording this video I already had a job offer from the company I intern with, so I will be moving forward with them 😊

Yes haha! And at the time I also had an internship and offer of employment after graduating. I just wanted to look for other options. But to be 100% honest, this video I think can be very misleading because I would not recommend applying to jobs using LinkedIn... it personally never worked!

Biomedical engineering as a bachelor is useless.... Unfortunately I cannot talk about masters because I don't know what the marketing experience is like ?
For a PhD, it's also not good without extensive work experience.... First of all PhD opportunities aren't that many and you certainly will be underpaid for putting so much time and dedication. Know a family relative who struggled to find a job with PhD in BME.
The thing is it comes down to bias and perception of a bunch of old engineers in the industry who do the actual hiring and heck in their time biomedical engineers weren't there. Not to mention, old professionals are one of the most narrow minded and know it all type of people out there. You get that sense of their arrogance when working with them or interviewing them.
My Professors mostly all graduated in more principle engineering programs, like, EE, ME. Etc. I graduated from the top 10 bioengineering programs in the nation. I did one internship and the type of work I get offered is not engineering at all. Mostly documentation roles, customer service..which are out of the question as terminal goals for a person who studied science. I seriously make more money working as an uber driver than an entry level bioengineer. So it is a disappointing major.
Thanks for sharing your opinion on BME, as this is what this channel is for and I want to make sure people interested in this major are well aware of the possibilities.
It is unfortunate to hear about your experience, specially after having graduated from a good university and having an internship.
Personally, that was not my experience. Please note that this video was recorded many years ago while I was still a student.
I did not graduate from a top 10 university (at least I don’t think I did), I had research and internship experiences. I would not consider my degree useless, as it always got me good paying jobs. Sure, I did not get paid as much as maybe other engineering majors, but that was to be expected as BME is not the most paid engineering degree. Regardless, I was happy with my starting salary of around $60K-$65K in Texas. I don’t know how much you can make doing Uber, so I can’t speak on that.
I do agree that most BME jobs will be documentation based. But if I wanted a hands on design job I would’ve studied ME or something else. I think that if someone is interested in BME but wants to have a job working with electronics, programming or design, then you must develop those specific skills separately or get a double major or masters in those areas. Again, just my opinion/experience.
BME certainly doesn’t work for everyone, but it doesn’t NOT work for everyone. I know a lot of BMEs who are very happy with their choice of degree and current careers.
It’d be very interesting try to narrow down exactly why it works for some but not for others.
@@TheBMELife consider yourself lucky, because that first job and first few years of experience is hard to obtain....Networking definitely helps...but that requires a certain character that I do not have. that starting salary is not bad for Texas honestly...In california, they dont pay much more than that. but the property value is three times the texas....I certainly did make mistake in my career that I was told I will be hired by the hiring manager during interview with a company since I didnt want to pay extra rent for another month, I had to quite my current job. later, the company who promised me the position (Verbally) retracted the offer. So overall, there is some error on my side. but the job stability in the US is atrocious as well to be honest.
