  • Welcome to Master Bowie's Kitchen. My name is Riesa, canine nutritionist (CASI) and raw dog food nutrition specialist (DNM Pro), and together with my Labrador, Bowie, I'm going to guide you how to make a simple, complete and balanced dog food, formulated to 2020 AAFCO guidelines for adult, healthy dogs, and using ingredients that are gentle for dogs with sensitive stomach. This recipe can be served raw or gently cooked.
    If you like to learn more about making your own dog food at home, make sure you get our e-Recipe Book called "Bowie Drools Over the Alphabet".

    Ingredients:
    550g chicken breast (can be substituted with Turkey, Rabbit or Crocodile)
    40g lamb/beef liver
    70g canned mackerel/salmon/sardines (with bone, in spring water, without salt, drained)
    150g cooked pumpkin (without skin, baked/steamed and mashed)
    50g steamed carrot (with skin, finely chopped/mashed)
    40g steamed green leafy vegetables/zucchini (finely chopped)
    1 whole large egg (with shell) - if you use egg shell powder supplement, add 5g.
    8g chia seeds (pre-soaked)
    4g psyllium husk powder (half the dosage if your dog cannot have much fibre)
    1g wheatgrass powder for vitamin E, zinc and manganese (I use Now brand)
    kelp/seaweed for iodine (dosage to follow individual product feeding guidelines/instructions). Note: in this recipe I use 2g dulse. If you use kelp powder from Now brand, add 0.25g.
    Served with bone broth - see our Easy Bone Broth Recipe here • Gelatinous Bone Broth ...
    Mix all well and portion according to your dog's daily intake. Portioned food can stay in the fridge if you plan to feed them within 72 hours, if not, freeze. Always practise safe food handling and storage techniques. Introduce new ingredients slowly and monitor. If you're unsure with any of the ingredients of if your dog has any health issues, it's best to consult with your vet. We always recommend that you feed a variety of whole foods on rotation and rotate through formulated recipes to avoid any excesses or deficiencies in specific nutrients.
    I hope you enjoy our little recipe and learn a bit more about fresh food feeding. Make sure you check out our "Bowie Drools Over the Alphabet" ebook - www.masterbowie.com/product/b...

    Thank you so much for this video. I have been looking for this. My 10yr old boxer stomach has become so sensitive I bought everything and he loved it. and it was very easy for me to prep and package a week at a time.... in the video you mentioned to switch things up

      Thank you for your feedback 😊 I'm glad to hear that your dog loved it! I would rotate to different protein (to the ones your dog is not sensitive/allergic to) and also the veggies. Aim to pair below the ground/root vegetables with above the ground/leafy vegetables 🐶💚

      @@masterbowie2016 does your book offer suggestions for this? Alwo, just curious, the meal you made in this video. Is that 1 meal a day or do you do this 2 times oer day? Saw you had a lab, my dog is 71 lbs and seems to want to eat about 2 pounds per day or gets whiny, haha. Hes very lean though.

      @@Mattys556 My book (Bowie Drools Over the Alphabet) provides a lot of dog nutrition resources, tips, guidelines, list of fresh foods rich in which nutrients and many more to help dog owners make their own dog food. Also over 30 recipes to try. I would definitely get one myself (if I can say that myself 😁). Bowie is 30kg and he's fed twice a day, about 2.5% of his body weight in total daily. The recipe in the video makes about 1kg of food. You can go caloric measurement to be precise but I just do 2.5% calculation and monitor body condition and adjust feeding accordingly 😊

    Question about the wheatgrass powder, psyllium husk, and dulse.. do you add this amount to the food for every serving? I feed twice a day... Or are these supplements an entire day's worth? Also, any particular brands you recommend of these products? Thank you

    • @masterbowie2016
      @masterbowie2016  4 місяці тому +1

      Hello, the amount of wheatgrass powder, psyllium husk and dulse are formulated for the specific amount of ingredients in the recipe, which make about 1kg of dog meal. I don't know how much your dog weighs so you'll need to do the calculation yourself. I use NOW brand for the wheatgrass powder, you can use any brand of psyllium husk. For the dulse, I use an Atlantic sourced dulse from Power Super Foods. Have a look at iherb or any organic, reliable brands from where you're from. Hope these answer your questions 😊🩷

    • @SilencedByYoutube
      @SilencedByYoutube 4 місяці тому

      @@masterbowie2016 Ok, I think I understand but just to clarify. Those amounts are specific to 1kg of food. So if I was making about 50 kilos of food at once to store in the freezer I would just multiply those amounts by 50.. then just proceed to feed my dog twice a day of whatever amount is appropriate to his weight (approximately 3% of body weight per day) split in half to cover 2 meals a day.

    Hii, may I know a good ratio for making homemade cooked food? Can the barf raw diet ratio also be used for cooked food? Of course, it doesn't include raw meaty bones which are replaced with egg shell powder

    • @masterbowie2016
      @masterbowie2016  Місяць тому

      BARF ratio can be used as a starting guide, just be mindful that there are some nutrients that can be depleted when cooked compared to raw 🙂 like any general guidelines, you may need to adjust elements as you go to suit your dog's specific requirements 🙂❤

    Will too much pumpkin cause diarrhea?

    • @masterbowie2016
      @masterbowie2016  3 місяці тому

      Pumpkin and turkey/chicken combination is often used as a bland diet for dogs recovering from diarrhoea. Pumpkin is rich in soluble fibre which can help decrease diarrhoea and help your dog feel fuller for longer. In saying that, each dog is different. Some dogs do ok with high fibre diet, some do better with less fibre in the diet. If your dog tends to be the latter, then start with small amount first, monitor and build up.

      A general fresh food feeding guideline for adult dogs is to feed 2-3% of total body weight daily. You still need to monitor body condition and adjust amounts accordingly as it all depends on your dog's activity level, other food they may have, age etc.

      There are ways to save $$ like buying in bulk, buying ingredients on specials, and plenty more. You can also rotate with commercial premades or use premix which often can reduce the cost a lot esp when it's hard/expensive to source certain ingredients. Many dog owners I know feed a hybrid diet meaning they add fresh foods to their dog's kibble diet. Budget can be one of the main concerns for many dog owners thinking of making their own food, but I think it's also relative and shouldn't stop them to feed their dogs fresh food. My advice is always work within your budget and see what you can feed your dog the best possible way to suit their needs 😊🩷
