We need more of Jim. Jim reminds me so much of my grandfather it’s crazy. Jim is always just like calm and rolls with ever is thrown at him. I am sure it’s a little different when the camera is not on him. He is one of those men that you want to be around and learn something from every day.
When I farmed with my grandpa, he hired his neighbor that lived on the backside of his 80 that we farmed. Jim was a retired lineman, and actually about the same caliber of your Jim. There’s wasn’t much that our Jim didn’t know. When I helped my grandpa I was in college and since we worked 6 days a week Saturdays would he sometimes rough none the less from Friday night partying. Jim always made sure to bring either me, another guy that helped us that was the same age, or BOTH of us along on one of the hottest jobs you could think of in late July Missouri. Our Jim would never say a word about our “impairments” on Saturday mornings, but would often chuckle at the first one of us that had to go around the field to vomit… man I miss those days AND Jim!
Zach you and Jim working together to fix the crank on the trailer is a joy to watch.😂 maybe not for you but it is for us. It's also a learning experience for your viewers as well.😊😊 Oh and congratulations on the win.
I just love watching Zach and his dad working together. You can just see how many hours they have worked together and the communication they have without saying anything!
Three comments: Love your channel and what you do. Jim is a blessing from heaven and never forget that his experience is priceless. Finally, from an old man that always learns the hard way, wear eye protection when drilling under heavy equipment.
The tip on your smoke wrench is leaking. It’s not seated correctly in the head and the popping is a fire burning in the head of the torch. Might just need to be snuggled down a bit tighter but would certainly get it straightened out so it can’t burn back up the lines to the regulators. Not real likely it will but still could. Great videos and I love seeing the adaptivness of a farmer
Doing that drilling without eye protection Zack could be a terrible nightmare…especially as you found out shavings were “hot potatoes”. Gotta think safety every now and then sir! Take care and “farm on!”
I'm sure you know how blessed you are to be able to have several shops with the equipment needed to do the repairs. Yet there's nothing like having an invaluable and experienced friends like Jim. I was wondering if having some bee boxes scattered about the fields would help for pollination? Thanks for all you do for us and may you all be abundantly blessed with all that's good
Glad I didn’t know you were selling grain trailers. I keep wanting one. 18:45 gloves are nice. EYE protection is needed. I wear eye protection almost 100% of time farming unless in truck, tractor. I have been to Dr. to have stuff removed from my eyes in my youth. It’s funny it LOOKS like Jim started with sand paper, then moved to angle grinder to finish up.
Jim is an indisputable stud. Badly burned by a broken drill bit? He's laughing and readying an all-time joke. I was lucky enough to grow up with a few Jims and you couldn't help but be who you are without them.
Zach Johnson.... farmer by day, awesome race car driver by night! Great video! Jim is an AMAZING fellow and a right hand man extraordinaire! Catdog is just plain cool! Anna and Didge can hold their own and they make each video a little bit more fun to watch! Until your next video ~~~Stay safe, healthy and happy!
Absolutely love the racing coverage and wondering if u practice your moves passing corn stocks and using the drill we dont have much racing in north dakota mainly donnie schatz so youre an idol to me
Just wanted to say thanks, I am 71 and grew up in Wisconsin, but my Dad grew up in Minnesota, his family were farmers in and around Faribault and Morristown, his Dad lived to be 103. Great memories of my visits to the Uncles farms,, thanks again..
Really enjoyed this video. I agree with the comments about how much of a asset he is. You should do a video interviewing Jim would love to hear his stories!
I will keep asking 😊 Really, really hope you guys will make more Off the Husk podcasts. We need more Mrs. and Mr. Millennial Farmer and Master Pipe Layer Randy 🎉
@Zac, the drill bit you showed near the 19:30 ish time, as someone who retired from being a tool sharpener, you are correct, that drill can be resharpened so it could be used again, at least as a stub drill making pilot holes for 'longer' drills.
Corn leaves twisting..... Winter radish and winter turnups to open the hard pan so the corn and soy beans can reach water ... Add your legumes and 8 - 10 other fall/winter species.... Let the plants do the work for you
It’s always a good day when I see a millennial with a shovel in his hand, albeit so briefly 😁, great video. Good to see Jim guiding you with his experience, a great man
I'm not a farm but here in ontario Canada the corn is so high beans are tall and thick is it maybe because of all the smoke in the air? Last year no rain. It all burned up . This year here every two days it rains. Crops look so good! Zack l have a friend drilling a hole just like you two miss lined shaft and gear the drill bit broke and toke his right eye. Oh did I say he had safety glass on the drill bit hit him in the cheek in out right in the eye under the glasses one second for the rest of you life. Me I'm a millright for over 45 years l would never walk in a shop without safety glasses and that job safety glass and face shed. Jim you to. Love you Chanel the dogs and love that cat.
Thanks for the videos you make of everyday farm life. It let's me enjoy the stuff of farming I grew up doing without the knuckle scraping, elbow banging, dirt in the eyes daily encounters of living on the farm. :)
Great video Zack when I use the HOT KNIFE on a bearing centre I cut each side then a small tap with a hammer and the 2 half's just fall off no further damage to the shaft save Jim doing his highly skilled machining. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for another great video. It was interesting and enjoyable. Tough work replacing those trailer bearings on the grain trailers. You and Jim got it done. Jim is a good person to have around. Handy guy with tools. Thanks Jim for helping. You mentioned new grain trailers. You mean new new trailers or used trailers?????? Getting better equipment is always nice. Busy time with hauling grain and maintenance repairs going on. Good that Jim could help. Nice to have an extra hand. About it I guess for now. Thanks for everything. The Iowa Farm Boy.
Pro tip for dropping trailers, put the landing gear/jack legs down until they just barely touch the ground then unhook and pull away. When backing under it again the 5th wheel plate will pick it up to where it needs to be and if it settles a quick suspension dump usually gets low enough to correct it
A few things, that cat is awesome. Dad, once he noticed you needed help, he hustled, great guy. Oil, oil or some type of coolant when drilling metal, use it, you'll like it. Finally, let Jim run the hand drill when wood is not involved. Great video as always.
Awesome video Zach. Yeah I've done some jobs like that. Use to help my Grandfather put his 3 point hitch on the tractor for winter when he'd put the snow plow on. Got to the point I could do it myself. He was impressed I could manage it even tho I was 16. 🚜🚜🚜
Hey Zach, have you heard of a remote control robot called the Grain Weevil? It is sort of an RC car with helical screws for propulsion. You can drive it around on top of the bin contents, and it can do many if not all of the things that might otherwise require the farmer to climb in to the bin. Could possibly save a few lives just by keeping the farmer out of the bin all together.
Men like Jim are invaluable, we need more men like him.
15$/h and place to live and I will be jim 2 from europe

Being a lineman & farmer myself trust me, he’s used to seeing guys puke it up on the job😂 linemen are VERY used to it😅
Jim seems like such an asset to the farm, so much knowledge and not afraid to get his hands dirty!
Your Dad and Jim are real men. This country used to value men like them. We need to get back to those days, and need more men like them. 🇺🇲
Damn right
Hell yeah brother 🤟🇺🇸
Who convinced you otherwise? Turn off Fox geez
Never underestimate good help like Jim. Also...never underestimate cutting oil when you're drilling. ;) And a good pair of gloves.
My thought exactly….. millennial’s…. Ha

I love Jim!! He’s one of the nicest, hardest workin fellas around! Love his sense of humor!
Jim is always always laughing. Such a good man 😊
Jim’s and Zach’s dad are wise sages, whose wisdom is derived from experience and acquired knowledge….
Zach...where's your safety glasses? 😂
I guess it’s really needed 😅
I’d love to know you better that’s only if you don’t mind, cos you seems to be a nice and cool person.
Doing that drilling without eye protection Zack could be a terrible nightmare…especially as you found out shavings were “hot potatoes”. Gotta think safety every now and then sir! Take care and “farm on!”
Nah safety squints work good enough
Jim sure brings a lot to the table. Hoping your corn and beans keep looking good!
Love to see Jim in more videos!! Always appreciate the humor!!
Jims never scared to get stuck in and dirty doing all sorts of jobs, you would be at a loss without him!

I’m so glad we are able to run center pivots, don’t have to worry like we used to for rain

Farming has always been very physical! I remember old farmers pushing their 60’s and 70’s doing hard labor when I was in my teens and twenties.
Jim for President 2024!

That's what she said!
I've said this over & over... Jim is such a pleasure to watch on so many levels. Great video Zach, and congrats on your face.
Good thing Jim was their and bye the way congratulations on the win
You are lucky to have good help like Jim
It official. Jim has been nominated for employee of the year and all around good guy.
Very!
Where do your soybeans go? Before I retired I hauled a lot of soybean oil out of Mankato, MN
Zach Jim is such a great old boy. I hope too be like Jim one day. “Where’s your gloves bud”
Jim: "ZACK!"
Zack: "Yeah?.... "
Jim: *silence *
Zack: "my drill bit got shorter hehe"
Love it, had me laughing for a good minute

I love Jim. He reminds me of my dad. A guy who worked with his hands his whole life. A wealth of knowledge and don't ever doubt, strong as a mule.
We like it when Zach needs to ask Jim for advice. A lifetime of farming is a lot of knowledge.

The animal voice overs are really the key to a great channel!
Need a grain spreader in the bin. Mixes pods in whole bin , no wads to plug sumps. Saw some gravity powered, that looked slick.

Before you dirty up the new trailers get some fancy May West poly plates 👍🏻
