In Norse mythology, Nidhogg is more of a parasite than a protector. He chews on the roots of Yggdrasil, and he's one of the few who will survive Ragnarok.

I was not expecting this fight when it happened. It caught me off guard, how very cool it is. It’s a very critical point in the game where Kratos gets an alley, a possible friend. I was worried about Freya’s role in the story, I’m glad of the way it turned out

I believe Ratotoskr had fooled nidhogg into protecting the world tree roots before Odin ever placed his curse upon Freya. In Norse mythology, nidhogg is a parasite that chews on the roots. Now she nests her children in the realm between realms and guards the roots to protect her young from realm tears and potential danger

Freya always knows the spell is more harmful, but she can't give it away. Just like you have a deathbed parent, and you could take away their misery. Many people can't do it. She always knew that, just as Kratos said, he shouldn't the one who decides who lives, it should be Fraya's decision. Just that's Kratos has grateful for her and doesn't want her to die.

I do not know why a creature such as this would be so devoted to guarding the roots of a tree, but she gave her life in their defense. Odin exploited Níðhögg's purpose - protecting the roots of the World Tree - to guard the curse he placed upon Freya. To use an otherwise innocent being's nature to lead it to destruction is a vile practice I do not regret slaying Nidhogg to gain Freya's freedom... but how many others are in the unwitting service of Odin? How many more will lie dead because of it?
