Rick Astley is a friend of a friend and I met him about 4 years ago at my friends birthday do. I have to say that Rick is one of the nicest and obliging people that I've ever met. He had time for everyone that night and was very much in demand. Lovely fella. He did sing and showed us all that he could in fact sing brilliantly.
As much as I was never a fan of the hit songs he had, it was always obvious to me that he was a very talented singer. Glad to see some of the videos floating around UA-cam showing how great of a person he seems to be, great guitar player, decent drummer, he's really shot up my list of people I'd like to meet.
I once saw him in a ski resort in France, Val d'isere in the early 90s. he was in this bar we were in called Dick's Tea-Bar I think. My dad, his mates and me (13 at the time) were all looking over. At one point one of his crew came over and whispered conspiratorially, "in case you're wondering - it is him!" in this delighted kind of way. We decided not to bother him after that as his friend seemed more of a handful. Not sure where this story is going - I like the guy.
This is why Dave is one of the most liked people in the business. The funny thing about rock and pop tunes, when you break them down, so many are built on the same frame. 4/4 with similar progressions. You could over lay hundreds of famous songs like this and be surprised how well they fit.
What struck me was how much respect the band gave him even though completely different ends of the music spectrum plus they all had fun which has gotta be whats its all about.
I mean, rock audience might piss on "cheesy pop", but anyone actually in the music business knows how difficult it is to write a catchy pop song that becomes such a huge hit.
It's so wholesome seeing "hardcore" bands being buddies with "cheesy" musicians and looking up to each other and respecting each other -- but it's funny when their fans feel the need to start beef with others over their taste in music xD when the fans are more sensitive about things like genre elements and the true definition of talent and "hardcore" than the actual supremely talented musicians!
@@sk8city476 true, plus Dave has a pretty diverse music pallette himself and listens to all kinds music, including soul and R & B. Never "gonna give you up" reminds me of an old school 60's Motown type of song
@@hermionestranger4964 well stated 👏 Some of Ricks songs aren't lyrically complex, but the instrumenation is very technical and is respected by many musicians in all genres, not to mention his unique powerful baritone voice that very few singers can pull off. Growing up, the only few people I knew who didn't like it were often pretty dense to begin with or just had a more narrow view of music in general and stuck to one type predominantly
You can't deny the talent Rick astly has just to jump on board with that and know exactly what they were talking about. "Brilliant" is an understatement.
That has all the markings of a hit. Listen, I grew up a KISS fan and progressed into METAL in the early 80's. I didn't buy Astley's lp back in the late 80's but it was a Solid Pop song. Good songs stand the test of time. Rick Astley Kicked Assley.

Which is what he always wanted to be. and he does rip off songs constantly. I've been plying guitar for 30 years. Most of the Pooh Biters hits are built off of other band's songs. Sorry to wake you but this guy is a douche bag of the highest order. He wants your money not your kinship. Try and shake his hand when he comes to your town. You'll never even get the opportunity. I've shook hands with Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Marc Ford, Grace Potter, Chris Robinson, Keb Mo, BB King, John Waits, Taj Mahal, Tommy Castro, John Butler, Ozzy, Tom Morello.....even the Wutang Clan and Tool! because they made themselves available for their fans at their shows. I guess I'll have to win "the backstage meet and greet passes" from KROQ to add the Pooh Biters to that list. What a joke.

Lewis hall You're a pop music fanatic. It's not even worth trying to make you see what douche he is. Even if he spit on you, you would sniff the wet spot on your shirt for a month.

I love how every UA-cam video about Rick Astley starts with "Haha remember that guy from the 80s" and ends with "Rick Astley is so talented and good natured and awesome and we wish he would do more stuff"
This has done my head in as I liked Rick when I was 13 a teeny bopper as it's known in the UK, and then turned into a grunge head at 17 when you want to feel grown up and cool cause you've just entered college, I loved Nirvana and pearl Jam, Rick was a distant memory ;). Both different styles and genre who'd thought it would happen?!
People forget how good of an artist Rick is in his own right. They only know the one song from the one meme and thats all they care to know. The man has a discography that most veterans in the space respect woefully.

Those two dudes SHOULD be friends. They're good, nice men and great at what they do. Yeah, they're completely different people from different worlds but those are the best connections. So fun. :)

They took several selfies...instead of just one pic (his insistence). She was returning home from visiting her daughters/my nieces; he was on his way to visit & stay with his mom.
I think the swearing more than anything else was him sending himself up. "Hi, it's me, the one everyone thinks of as a smarmy nice guy! NOW WATCH THIS MOTHERF*CKERS!" Astley has a fantastic sense of humor, he's always been in on the joke.

A music UA-camr called Adam Neely did a great video about mashups that sort of talks about that kind of thing, I'd recommend it.
Axis of Awesome did it first
Rob Cantor's Pachelbel Rant too
They need to get their asses to the studio and record "smells like I'm never gonna give you up"
