Rick is from a generation where you had to have great vocals to even have a shot at a music career. The man is a living legend and his voice is absolutely phenomenal
I'm too young to know anything about that era of music (I was born the year this song came out), but Rick Astley has said in interviews that he used to sing in a choir, which is probably a much better and more direct explanation for his vocals. Since usually, if you sing in a choir, you learn at least the rudiments of using your breath properly, and how to project your voice even without a microphone.

He doesn't see much of the royalties, though. He didn't write the song and was a new artist at the time. He only receives performer royalties. Astley has stated in interviews he'd received a total of $12 in royalties for the song as of 2015.
@@Junuxx Can You Kick the Knee in MMA? It varies from state to state. Some states allow it, others rules that such linear kicks to the front of side of an opponent’s knee will result in a warning and a deduction of points from the referee. A severe kicking to a kneecap can do serious damage to your opponent - along the lines of stretched tendons and ruptured ligaments and joints. They could cripple a fighter and they may never be the same again - which means that, truthfully, there isn’t a lot of honour in inflicting such a world of pain on someone in this way. ‘Knee stomping’, also known as an oblique kick, is currently legal in the UFC, though. This is where a fighter hits part of their opponent’s thigh just above the knee, which could hyperextend it and cause anterior cruciate and medical collateral ligament damage. Darren Till injured his right knee after falling victim to a Robert Whittaker knee stomp at UFC Fight Island 3 in July 2020.
It's actually really cool how Rick Astley didn't get bitter about the Rick Roll thing, and just seems like he's "happy to be here" as it were. What a boss.
What would there have been to get bitter about anyways? The internet got him even more famous without having to even do anything further. That's the dream.
Considering he got his career back overnight after being forgotten for over 10 years, he has no reason to be bitter. He went from being a relic of the 80s to a legend.
He probably feels very similar to Ricky Gervais, who when asked how he feels when people talk about how much better the American version of The Office is, replied, "Very rich."
And this is what you get when you mix “Never going to give you up” and “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. This was genius. You can hear the beat and drums from Smells like teen spirit, and the guitar parts too, but with Rick’s song chords. Same song structure either - intro, verse, bridge and chorus. So cool.

That’s not fucking cool.” Don’t fucking think it’s not cool to like Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” It is cool to like Britney Spears’ “Toxic”! Why the fuck not? Fuck you! That’s who I am, goddamn it! For those that know, there is an interview with the Foo Fighters , this was not practiced with Rick at all. This is a live Jam Session !! The band was messing around pre-show playing the song. Dave found out that Rick is at the show and they brought him up on stage. When you see Dave talking to Rick, he told him what the plan was and Rick said Brilliant. The rest is history.
@@fitfogey Seems Dave was talking about the time they did it in Japan first, that was in front of 30 000 people in Japan. He later said: "we can never re-enact that moment".
I watched Rick growing up. I had no choice. We of the 80s were the first to get Rick Rolled and on a daily basis. It's really cool to see him recognized as a music legend by so many musicians and fans and watch him transcend generation and time.
Wonder if any other Stock Aitken Waterman songs would work like this? Can we get Dave and the boys to do I Should Be So Lucky with Kylie? That might be interesting!
Considering that Nirvana and grunge formed in opposition to the type of music the 80's and early 90's was putting out, it's kinda cool to see it come full circle and combine the two styles with artists who were key on both sides. Just goes to show that good music is simply good music.

It wasn't the song that made people mad, it was the misleading, trying to find something and click on it and it wasn't there. Wasting time trying to find something
This is why the Foo Fighters (and Dave Grohl) are the COOLEST and BEST band EVER. Doesn't matter if it is Rick Astley or the Bee Gees or themselves, everything they do and cover resonates with everyone from age 20 to age 60. And they do without irony....what was cool is still cool
One thing I give Grohl and Foo Fighters credit on...they don't discriminate when it comes to music genre or styles, or even people who can play their songs. He's a cool dude IMHO.
Yeah except it wasn't his agent because there was no money rolling in from the email virus. It was his daughter that informed him how his tune was being used. Also the version they performed in this video was the mashup between Smells Like Teen Spirit and Never Going to Give You Up, produced in 2009, a year after Rick Astley did a live appearance in the Macy's Day Parade already.

I have already developed a ton of respect for Mr. Astley for the way he handled the whole “Rickrolled” thing, but man! That dude has still got mad entertainer skills! Besides coming out nervous as all get out and laughing about it (while making the audience laugh), he “rocks” the song and works the audience too! And the the mic twirl! Rick Astley is DEFINITELY on my list of cool artists!
Thing is, almost nobody knows why. Rick did, what most people in the business never had the balls for, saying "Goodbye" when at his peak, denying the industry, putting his family above it all, taking what he got and he has probably missed out on a LOT OF MONEY. not only because of that do I like him, but his makes him special
Such a gutsy move to jump in headfirst just for the love of music and the fans- and crushes it in the process. Maximum respect to Dave Grohl for opening the door and same to Rick for walking through. Only to be in the audience for that moment. Music unites the world.

I had the pleasure of working with Rick Astley as his live stream audio mixer on a show. He was fantastic and a gentlemen. The dude can play and has a great set of pipes.
What I like about Rick is that he starts off a *little* shaky (no surprise as he had *NO* rehearsal for this) but after the first chorus he completely adapts and gets into the rhythm of the song. That shows an amazing talent.

This guy has taken a ridiculous amount of parody in the classiest and most friggin tolerant and fun way ever. Props to you, Rick, it wouldn't be nearly as fun without you being a part of it.
It's a mashup with smells like teen spirit too. It's got the intro fill, the same rhythm, the same melodic lead in the verses that build up to the chorus, also with the chorus vocal being used as a guitar solo. That's a really interesting choice to make.
if you watch some of the interviews with DG about this, he mentions that SLTS and NGGYU are structurally the same, so its very easy to play NGGYU like SLTS

What would there have been to get bitter about anyways? The internet got him even more famous without having to even do anything further. That's the dream.
Considering he got his career back overnight after being forgotten for over 10 years, he has no reason to be bitter. He went from being a relic of the 80s to a legend.
