Haha!! Same!! I’ve picked up BBQs, patio furniture, pots … antique furniture … books!!! Record collections!!! You name it!!! I live in “Free Pile” central here in Portland, Oregon!! 🤣❤️🤣
Went to the dollar store one day for soda but saw that the manager wanted to get rid of the leftover seed packets (around a hundred or so ranging in vegetables mostly but some flowers) I decided to buy two packets of carrots but she wanted the seeds gone so bad that she gave me all of the packets for free. What would have costed me maybe $5 to $10 all together costed me $0. She was extremely nice but was tired of no one buying the seeds so I got so many packets of carrots and radishes along with chives, oregano, parsley, bush beans, peas and watermelon.
Another tip for cheaperish gardening that I do. I reuse nursery pots for my plants. I.e. I buy a plant repot it into a bigger pot and then replant my seedlings into the empty pot and so on. I got the idea from hermit crabs. They form a que line and switch out shells with each other. Biggest to smallest. I also crowd garden my pots.
YESSSS! I bought a box of mixed flowers for pollinators from the Dollar Stor 3 years ago. WOWZA! I threw them in my garden soil and the germination rate was amazing! Three years later I still have seeds germinating.
I have purchased the “dollar tree” seeds. I have waited until the end of the season when they have been 70-80% off. So literally pennies a package. Used them the next season with no problem. They are not fancy varieties- BUT they are usually tried and true varieties that are widely sold by bigger seed companies for a lot more $. Well worth picking up. I have bought a similar planter from Aldi’s.
Ok I was SUPER overwhelmed to start growing things because the amount of information online is just so overwhelming so this is the first channel I came to and I feel comfortable and I feel like you explain things really well
Yes! That's me too! I've never been a gardener, literally ever. And every time I feel like I want to start trying it out, the internet freaks me out and I get overwhelmed and never know where to start, so I just don't. 😒 Thank you Ashley for holding all our non-gardener hands, and taking us gently on this overwhelming journey. 🥰👊
I resuse my containers from the plants I purchase. The shrubbery containers are nice and large. They are great for greens, peppers, okra, carrots etc. The pot doesn't need to be fancy as long as it can grow your food.
This is true but an attractive garden is appealing, a good topic of discussion and may perhaps inspire others to grow their own fruits, herbs and veggies.
My Dollar tree doesn't have the best selection. It's not very big. Seems like everything is more than a dollar too lol. This video is a few years old so that could be part of the problem. But thanks I enjoyed your video! You're doing great girl! Keep it up. I'm proud of you and I wish my children and grandchildren would be more interested in planting flowers and food. In this day we need to grow what we can for food. I told my oldest son this spring that we need to grow a victory garden. He just said NOPE. Bummer because I've been forced to live in a tiny apartment and it's too far away for me to go take care of plants more than once a week. I'm afraid things would die like everything else I've planted there in the past. LORD make a way! 🙏
Rubbermaid type plastic bins also work well, if you drill holes in them. I get mine cheap from a local thrift store. Not quite as cute, but they do the job! The flexible/rubbery feeling ones seem to last much longer (years) than the shiny, smooth kind (breaks down in one season of sunlight).
Redneck Tupperware works the same way - don't throw out yogurt containers, butter tubs, soda bottles (mini greenhouses when done right), strawberry flats, ...
I get free icing containers from the grocery store bakery. Most of them are 2 or 3 gallon hefty plastic buckets. All you have to do is drill some drainage holes in them.
I've been gardening in raised beds for 4 years and wanted to try container gardening for next year. I found this video very motivating, thanks for sharing. 😘
I did enjoy. I just started my first garden. FYI---you could have left the plants in the paper containers. They help with the compost from what I understand. These came out great. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for the help! I was finally able to afford an apartment with a small patio this year. Been really wanting to have a home garden but due to lack of space and money, i've been hesitant. Ill definitely try out these tips! I'm so excited to have an outdoor space for some homegrown goodness.
Dollar Tree has a variety of multi-purpose containers, and I scooped up a bunch. They make terrific hanging planters, and the store also had some colored thick twine. The plastic is thin enough that I can make four holes, or two, if the planter already has two molded handles. Through these I put my twine (rope) and make a four legged suspension hanger. I also poke holes around the bottom edge for drainage. I have had problems with bugs eating the shoots when I plant in the ground, so this has kept the bugs off. I also spray with very diluted dish detergent and use diatomacious earth sprinkled in them. The hanging planters allow me to not have to bend over for watering or planting new seeds. They are at eye view, and for people with mobility problems, this is ideal. Suspension height can be adjusted, plants can be moved, and someone in a wheelchair can garden in them easily. I use my sturdy trees and fence posts for hanging. But I am going to run a thick wire/cable between two trees so I can hang a whole line of them. They are somewhat heavy, so any line must be able to handle the weight. For soil, I dig around the base of bushes and trees that have shed their leaves over the years, and the dirt is fantastic. I don't have to buy soil.
I found the exact tower stacks from my dollar tree here in Seattle. They only had it once. I'm glad I grabbed all 20.Made two stacks, super easy and delicate to the pockets😂
I live in a mobile home in an in-town park with tiny sites. This is the best place for us, now, in our old age. But I do miss back in the day when I had a huge garden, big enough to grow corn and pumpkins and melons and potaoes. I am a frustrated gardener and I love these videos.
I recycle my plant pots and 8 packs for seeds. I buy the 8 packs on clearance at Lowe’s, take two plants out, repot together in a larger pot and get 4 good sized plants after some miracle grow and a few weeks. I make my container gardens with them and add some perennials from my own garden. This way I don’t spend too much and have bigger plants for the money.
Great video, excellent ideas! I love Dollar Tree! In previous years they had leftover seeds, but lately there seems to be a gardening mania, probably because of Covid, so the DT stores in my area sell out very quickly. If I see gardening supplies I grab them quickly. Their seeds have done very well for me and in one pkt of Beefsteak tomatoes I counted 76 seeds! My tip for finding loads of free pots from seedling size to huge I visit the dumpsters after landscaping companies finish with a new home or commercial property...jackpot!
Our garbage day is Monday pick up. I put my Great Dane in my Explorer and we ride around our neighborhood to see what is sitting out on the curb for trash pickup. I have found so many things I could use for my container gardening blinds that I can use for plant markers, one time I found a stack of 10 5 gallon buckets that had already been used for gardening that had holes already drilled in them that was a good score
I shop the curbs, I have got some really workable large pots, what I look for is ice chests, those with lids removed, the drain plug opened & filled with really good soil. I like a lot of good soil to feed my plants. Dollar Tree no longer handles the large pots I enjoyed & bought several of. All my plants have done well this year, those .25 cent Dollar Tree seeds went wild. Be sure & regrow plants, green onions are a super good deal.
My local Dollar Tree store only had a few regular plastic pots and some gardening tools... no soil, definitely no stackable planters (I wish!!) Glad you were fortunate enough to find some!
My husband's favorite phrase = Ain't no shame in my game. I have found ( in the garden stuff ) the majority of the items either work better and / or last longer than the big name brand stores as well. P.S. at 7:38 I bought 4 of those for my Herb garden and those are well worth the money for sure. I love the hands off self watering reservoir. I only have to fill it maybe once a week depending on how dry it is throughout that week.
First time viewing your channel. This was great! I've purchased dish tubs and tupperware for garden things, but didn't know they sell actual garden supplies. Going to check them out very early next spring or late winter. Love those tier planters. Thanks for all the tips. Blessings to you!
I use the DT seed starting mix and so far so good! I have found that you have to moisten it and mix it first otherwise the water will just sit on top and won’t soak in...I think that’s pretty common though of seed starting mixes
I like those little three-way pots as a gift idea with herbs planted. I’m going to do that for my neighbors that help me out a lot. It’s an inexpensive thank you that’s useful for them. 😊
That galvanized tub is a foot tub for washing your feet or anything you need to wash hint hint. Used more back in the day when bathrooms weren't readily available
These are such great tips! I have bought seeds from DT before, but have never seen those stacking pots or even dirt. I am starting some seeds using winter sowing method this year. So excited! Thanks for this great video!
Love your presentation. Down to earth, easy to understand and on my kind of budget. Thanks! Trying to keep organic can be challenging, I use solutions of peroxide and water, rubbing alcohol and water and neem oil. Cheaper, healthier and does a decent job.
Wow I like the staking planters. I put flowers in mine. Works well. I planted potatoes recently in a hanging basket. They are growing well. Thanks for sharing. 😊
There is a garden center not far from me where they had a bin of sligtly damaged pots but still usable and carriers that were FREE! Got a lot of them for a couple of years like that. Also, i reuse sour cream containers and cut down 2 liter soda bottles (drink a lot of soda!)
I use jobes fertilizer spikes for my potted plants, especially to start. Got at my local grocery store for $1.99 for an 8 pack. Its a 4-4-4 blend so pretty solid for a basic pot fertilizer
I wish our poundland shops had as good supplies as your dollar tree shops! I love the idea of the pots for presents for mothers day, such a great idea.
Very good presentation, I paid $4 for a doggone eggplant last year at Ace. This year I grew from seeds and I have 12 for the price of a pack of seeds. I usually grow from seed but got too busy but never again will I buy seedlings.
You will see 'farmers & homesteaders' using the aluminum tubs to 'water' their animals and carrying various resources around their properties. When I was younger, the older rural generation used BIGGER ones to bathe their kids and themselves in. They used to make 'mop bucket' sized ones once upon a time as well. Many different types of 'aluminum' buckets are in use now, as previously stated, farmers have ones specifically made for storing RAW milk and you will see them use your bucket (mop size) to catch the milk as they 'milk' their cows and then transfer it to the ones made for storage.
Great video! Love the Dollar Tree! I'll be replanting seedlings into planters this weekend. Good luck with your garden! Take care and stay well to all ❤
Hi Ashley, I watched your video last year and was so excited to start, but it was too late in the season. This year you inspired me to head to Dollar Tree and get all my seeds and supplies early! Seeing all of your fresh and beautiful veggies in your video motivated me to start several things from seed, and the other day, I harvested my first lettuce ever and I couldn’t believe I didn’t kill it 🤣. My family really enjoyed fresh salad from our own garden. Regarding those peat pots, I do remove the biodegradable container because it does take a long time to break down. I understand at least to remove the top part, otherwise it will wick water up from the plant itself. It was so thoughtful to make a planter for your mom 😍. Thank you so much for the clear explanation and demo! Loved the soothing music, too!
so nice!! really love those planters with the herbs!! you can use toilet paper rolls cut in half as seed starters and they are FREE and will break down when planted in dirt....
That is amazing dollar store has that stuff I was at ace hardware yesterday and one really really gorgeous ceramic fancy large pot was 45 dollars I wanted to invest in the fancier ones thought they might last and be very gorgeous but you sure got some good ideas wow
I just am starting your video and haven't gotten past the one-minute mark as of yet but I want to say I love your hair! It looks amazing! My son wants dreads.
In the metal (galvanized steel) bucket/bin... make sure you have drainage holes either drilled or punched in the bottom, so your plants roots don't drown. Your potager looks beautiful and lush... great starts! :)
I just subscribed to your channel and love your video so much. I love the containers where you planted the herbs and vegetables. Unfortunately, none of my dollar tree stores near me have these containers. All sold out but next time, I'll shop earlier for the containers. Love all your plants. You definitely have a green thumb! Very helpful video! Thanks! 😊👌👍🇨🇦
I think it would also have been useful to mention (maybe in a follow-up video) HOW the herbs grow so your viewers get the 'Placement' right. You don't want one herb blocking the sunlight of another herb or taking OVER the entire pot, lol.
Great seed tips. thanks. I'm so blessed there are several gardening families in my neighbourhood . I get so many seedling of different plants. I only grow tomatoes from seeds and give away. I save my tomato seeds and they always come good. Thanks for your video. and the pots are a good save too.
You can use a really long eyebolt, some washers, and nuts to create a hanging center rod for three of them stacked up. I hope that makes sense. I saw the idea on Amazon when I was looking for a similar kind of planter. You would just need to drill a hole through the center portion of each planter and secure the bottom one with washers and nuts onto the eyebolt.
I always get my seeds from the Dollar Tree and they've always grown they've never failed me failed me and it's very cheap just like what she say I get all my stuff from there and I have a beautiful garden and beautiful flower beds
WHAT A CUTIE ! LOVELY GIRL. I SAW THOSE 3 - POT STACKING PLANTER UNITS AT ONE OF OUR DOLLAR TREE STORES. A FEW DAYS LATER, THEY WERE COMPLETELY WIPED OUT ! NOT A ONE LEFT ! I EVEN WENT TO THEIR WEBSITE IN DESPERATION & COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING LIKE THEM, ARGH ! I WAS SO FRUSTRATED ! WISH I HAD GRABBED THEM WHEN THEY WERE THERE ! A LESSON LEARNED, HOPEFULLY.
I ordered a case of 36 of these from Dollar Tree early this year. I bought online and picked them up at my local store a couple of weeks later. They’ve done pretty well for strawberries, micro/dwarf cherry tomatoes, and herbs so far.
gail williams I ordered mine very early this year. I think they’ve been sold out since February or March. I’m afraid they might not come back anytime soon because of all the supply chain disruptions. 🙁
So glad I found this video!! Love this idea and it's super adorable for a patio (which is pretty much all I have lol). My chives also look quite pitiful so I'm glad I'm not alone in that! Just subscribed :)
Ayee! I bought the same seeds from Luke lol hope ur gardening is going great! You know ur stuff! You got a new subscriber! Stay safe and happy growing this year! 🥕👨🌾🍅✌🥦
I just bike around on garbage day and pick up garden containers that are free. That's my budget gardening

I would say that your scored 👍
Good pickup
They do this every year but never announced it. They usually discard all their garden supplies also.
Awesome.
I use Dollar Tree garbage cans to grow red potatoes in. I get around 15lbs per can. But, you can use them, and, the soil for several years.
Excellent info. Thank you
Orange zest curls are great organic fertilizers. Rich in NPK: nitrogen phosphorus pottasium.
The way to save unused seeds is to save them in your fridge. I've done it for years.
Thanks for that tip!😊

so nice!! really love those planters with the herbs!! you can use toilet paper rolls cut in half as seed starters and they are FREE and will break down when planted in dirt....
This video was very helpful. I garden 100% in containers.
Love the video. I have 5 City Pickers and love them. I use them mainly for my tomatoes and Squash.
That is amazing dollar store has that stuff I was at ace hardware yesterday and one really really gorgeous ceramic fancy large pot was 45 dollars I wanted to invest in the fancier ones thought they might last and be very gorgeous but you sure got some good ideas wow
Just made a trip to dollar tree and loaded up on the containers and trays. Thanks for all the great advice. New subscriber.👍😊 Have a blessed day!
Joyce Jordan of course! Thank you!
Thanks! 😊👌👍🇨🇦
I was sooooo upset when I went to Walmart to get gardening supplies only to see the same thing at dollar tree. Great video my love
Hi Ashley! Great video ... that potting soil you opened really look like garden soil....good idea to mix it with seed starter mix! Thanks
Also mix with pearlite.
I love this idea! I may try this out! Thank you!
New subby here!! Yes love the dollar tree for my gardener needs!! You really have slot of goodies here!! Thanks for information!
YEEEESSSSSS QUEEN!!!! Love these ideas!!!!
I ordered a case of 36 of these from Dollar Tree early this year. I bought online and picked them up at my local store a couple of weeks later. They’ve done pretty well for strawberries, micro/dwarf cherry tomatoes, and herbs so far.
What the order # I look online dollar tree could not find
gail williams I ordered mine very early this year.
Glad I found this channel... Appreciate this,. Thank you.

did you know you can actually bury those paper pots right into the dirt? That is helpful to help keep moisture in the soil.....great ideas, thank you
Yes you can bury the cardboard type right in the soil!
Great tips! I wish I would have found picked up some one of those DT stackable planters when I saw them. Those will make great gifts.
I just started gardening and I love it... thanks wonderful
You can go to your local feed and seed for wash tubs. The metal pans. It will probably save you a lot of money!
