I did a strange thing a few years ago and it has worked well. My mother in law had lived with us for a while before her dementia got worse. When she had to move to a nursing home I discovered some adult diapers left behind. I took them, ripped them apart partially and placed them below root level in my planters. They helped maintain moisture better than any commercial product. They also last a couple of years and continue working. Since then I have bought a package of cheap “diapers “ and they especially work well in hanging planters.
I up cycled my co workers mineral tubs he has for his cattle, he gave me the pic of all the ones piled up behind his barn, I got 50! I now have 28 tomato plants and growing 10 bush green beans in each under my tomato plants and I have 20 bell peppers I ordered more bush green beans to plant under those also, have cauliflower and broccoli growing and will be harvesting my larger onions this weekend, I over winter my onions and made a huge difference in the size of my onions. Same with garlic. Once I harvest and get them laid out to cure I will be putting in my squash and zucchini. I grow Swiss chard as it doesn’t bolt in my texas heat but grows 10 months out of the year and my hens love it right along with myself. Very cool garden. I used to go to food giveaways and ask them if I could have the old produce, especially the ones that have seeds in them. The rest I brought home and threw them in my mulch pile.I had a crazy amount of free seeds and rich black mulch from all the produce waste. I turned ugly dressers on the side of the road into planters. Didn't matter if it was kinda busted.I just turned the ugly dressers on their backs and filled the pockets with good dirt and mulch. You can even hang old boots from a clothesline and fill with mulch and plant plants. Hope this helps the poor who have little of anything. Remember if you even ask for a glass of water at a restaurant, you ask for lemon and there is your seeds once again. ❤
I've also seen people use those coco liners as a mini mulch ring for small shrubs or trees to keep weeds down and keep away from overmulching the stems. The dollar store ones only run a couple bucks for two of them instead of the ones marketed on Amazon to be mulch rings.
Love the filing cabinet planters! It never occurred to me to use them for plants. Now I am going to Goodwill to gather as much leftover metal furniture to upcycle as I can get. Very good idea :)

I live in the woods in the Sierras and I love your ideas and your garden. The dollar store has been a great friend to this ol retired teacher, for plastic pots and bins...they have survived heat and snow some for years...truly a bargain. Your property is so pretty. I have to garden behind fences for the most part, because of the deer and critters, so I love all your ideas for vertical planting on the fence and fence posts!
As someone who also gardens with Sierra deer, just a thought on growing up fences: if the spaces in the wire are big enough for deer to get their noses through, they will happily eat what's available once the wild green stuff dies down. You can put old shade cloth (probably can scavenge from a neighbor) on the front, or, once a crocheted a net to put in front out of mason twine, lasted about 10 years. And old volleyball net could do it, too-- it's an opportunity for creativity! And to feed the deer, you can toss some weeds outside the fence.
5:00 I ran out of planters one year and planted strawberries in Amazon boxes. Just put the soil into the boxes and they lasted all through the season and actually were still sitting there ready to be used the next year. I could have made it more like a strawberry planter if I had cut holes around the boxes. I used to think everything had to be just so and had to have all the right tools and containers, but it is easy to become resourceful!
I don’t think I've seen another gardening channel like this. Wonderful ideas that have given me ideas. I subscribed right away. Can't wait to see the strawberries!
Just a note to anyone using fruit tree mesh - if you can fit a finger through the mesh holes, you will catch small birds and bats in the mesh, which is a disaster. Use the small hole mesh, like she shows here! Beautiful job! ❤
This is my first time watching one of your videos, and you have inspired me. I’m a newbie and I feel so overwhelmed, like with costs and knowing what to do. I’m really late getting started, but I am feeling excited anyway after hearing your joy and budget savers.
CONGRATULATIONS on beginning your journey!! I'm so happy for you!!! And I definitely understand that overwhelming feeling when you don't know what to buy. And there are so many different things to learn. But when you start to see your garden growing all of it just kind of dissipates and your heart is just filled with so much joy!
Yes!!!! One time, one of my sunflowers was leaning over and I didn't have any stakes or twine or zip ties. I ended up using part of a dead tree branch and some bread ties from the kitchen junk drawer to tie it to the branch, which I had stuck in the soil near it. I hoard those bread ties, and was happy to actually find a use for them 😂
Taqueshia, you and Thomas are SO CREATIVE!! His building is no garden "shed". With that multi- paned window and the roof shingles it is a Tiny Home!! Hmmm... Do I see a young person or two sleeping out there in the future, as a hideaway?!? I love your basket lined w/ weed fabric, planted to strawberries best!
I love your innovative, affordable, simplistic gardening tips! You’re an inspiration to me. Thank you for sharing your helps with the rest of us💕🙌🏼💃🏼🙏🏼
As you're twisting the extra fabric on your basket planter, your skillful hands show us that you've had much time in plaiting beautiful braids for some precious girls or young ladies!❤
Maybe think about putting marigolds or another companion plant in top of your strawberry planters. It would be really pretty, and some protection from aphids and other critters
@ourfreedomsong Yes! Marigolds are awesome! I planted one with my tomato plant and so far it's remained pest free. I'd rather use Marigolds than Neem oil any day! Plus, Neem can harm the endocrine systems of pollinators and kill the beneficial predatory insects that eat things like aphids.
@@ourfreedomsongSorry for multiple comments. About companion plants- strong smelling herbs like Rosemary and Basil are great for deterring pests while still attracting predatory insects. You just gotta make sure that your chosen companion plant can vibe with your other plant. For example, Rosemary and Basil shouldn't be planted together because they have different moisture and sun requirements. Rosemary loves lots of sun and dryer soil, while Basil is a drama queen...haha! It prefers indirect bright light during morning and evening hours and moist, but not soggy, soil. Marigolds are similar to Rosemary or tomatoes because they like the same kind of soil, water and sun. I apologize to everyone who hates the word moist. It's the only word that makes sense here 😂
I wondered why you put marigolds; I use them to keep snakes away. 🫣. From above, now I know they will keep bugs away, also. I love it! I just found you today as I have been collecting Dollar Tree hacks for projects for the grandkids, so you came up in my feed. I love your personality and ideas. I am in zone 10b verging quickly to zone 11 (with Sandy soil). My veggie gardening has not gone well the last few years so I gave up this year. Now I am wishing I hadn’t. Maybe you are the inspiration I need! I’ll be back!
Have the tiered pots blown off in the wind? You could drill a rod of rebar into the top, center of the posts and then drill a hole through the center of each of the tiered pots and slide the pots onto the rebar and that should hold it. You can probably find a nice bird finial for the top of the rebar to really hold them in place and it would look so pretty. Awesome video! Thank you for the ideas! 🙏🏻♥️
Im in SC in zone 7b it's 80 degrees here I've been out planting in my garden, i love all of your ideas, last year I took a large clothes basket and lined it with the landscape cloth and grew cucumbers in it and it really works great i had so many cucumbers I had to give a lot of them away. Thanks for sharing your ideas ❤
OMG everything is looking so beautiful and Thomas is really putting the work on your shed! I know you're proud of your hubby. Thanks for sharing and happy gardening?🙏❣️
I really enjoyed this video! I know where 2 filing cabinets are that were my Dad's. I will be using them after seeing this video. My Dad would love it! Thanks for all the great ideas. I'm planting corn in my yard this year because the plants are so beautiful and i really like corn.
@ourfreedomsong can you make a video explaining how you guys built the greenhouse and how you got the windows in? It's beautiful and I have a bunch of fence wood left over and would live to build one like yours!

You are so much fun to watch. Your Joy is catching. One suggestion. Get some rather large washers and put them on the screws. This will give a wider support to the screws being put into post.
I love your ideas! I’m getting more windmills! :-) Strawberry planter ideas are so awesome. You are fun!!! You could even plant the extra strawberries around the inside fence line. They will spread and can collect repopulated strawberries the following year.

Newbie here. I love your ideas and cost efficient problem solving. Such great ideas. And that shed, to die for!! Thanks for sharing with us and with such a beautiful smile and attitude. Good luck with those strawberries. Now I have to grow some!😂
I did my strawberries in the way you did in the basket… only I filled two baskets with the cocoa coir and dirt then….. I put they two together with zip ties to form a globe and voila a strawberry globe. It’s a winner . You should totally try it. However you need to water them more often than you might think. I dip mine twice a day in my rain barrel. ❤😊
Just a hint for you....if you line the bottom half with the plastic from a compost bag inside the coir liner and cut through both to plant through it can help with water retention (and you can make use of the plastic compost bags too). You can use the same idea for anything that is porous to help with water retention as long as you remember to poke in some drainage holes.🙂
People can share all the tips in the world for people like you, and you still find a way to be ungrateful. You assumed from a picture instead of watching a video and finding out the facts. That's on you, not her.
I must be driving on the wrong roads bc I haven't seen such great stuff! I'll for sure be keeping my eyes open wider. So happy to have found your channel!
27:55 What a great idea! I wish I'd known about this when I had blueberries and figs. All my blueberries and figs have died on me. 🤥 The only thing I have done to keep the birds, etc. away is to put plastic forks upside down in the soil next to the stem of the plants. Also put shiny things in the plants like small Christmas ornaments, etc. I kept digging and planting $35-$30 fig trees and $10 blueberry bushes and I should've just bought a little container of fruit at the grocery store.
I am also on my third year garden, and I have to say, you have done amazing work! Your hacks are great also! I love your green house and shed! ❤ your joy is infectious!
have you tried wick watering? you put your plants in , either the ground of planters, and above it, on a fence post or just elevated a bit, you put nice looking things like old watering cans, or metal bins, and you fill those with water, then you use thick dollart store twine and dip iti nto the water, then cut them to lengths that go from the water container to the plants, you can run a long twine down a row, or to one twine to each plant, then with the water container higher it will wick or draw the water out, and drawit down to the dirt, and along the roots, and ater all of the time, incase you forget to water, or it is hard to get to all of it all of the time, just wick it. and all youhave to do it remember to fill the wick water container, which can last weeks, or days depending on the plants, and the temps outside. but it works so well,
Thank you so much for sharing your love and passion.💖💖This is so awesome!! Gardening brings me such joy!! I love to repurpose also. I can't wait to have land again to do this. In the meantime I'm working from my patio. Thank You Lord for my Promised Land!
I've seen people use leaves, small sticks, shredded paper, homemade compost and all kinds of organic materials that you can find in the yard, at home and in the woods to fill up the bottom of containers so they aren't purchasing so much soil

It was meant for me to watch this. It kept popping up. Despite me not clicking on it, lol 😂. I finally did!! I love this.
Necessity is the mother of invention is a real thing!😀
YASSSS!
@@ourfreedomsong And, where there’s a will there’s a way. Love all your ideas and all the comments of support in all you’re achieving.
Yes!!!! One time, one of my sunflowers was leaning over and I didn't have any stakes or twine or zip ties. I ended up using part of a dead tree branch and some bread ties from the kitchen junk drawer to tie it to the branch, which I had stuck in the soil near it. I hoard those bread ties, and was happy to actually find a use for them 😂
@@amandasshadow9605 And I thought I was the only one that saved the bread ties! Great minds think alike. 😄
@@adriankap2978 😂 Yes! Haha! They come in handy a lot! I've even done a temporary fix for an arm that fell off my glasses once!
Absolutely love the hanging strawberry planter idea 😊
I'm so happy you love it! ❤️
Thank you so much Annie!!! I hope it becomes the perfect hideaway 🥰🥰🥰🥰
I love your innovative, affordable, simplistic gardening tips!
You’re an inspiration to me.
Thank you for sharing your helps with the rest of us💕🙌🏼💃🏼🙏🏼
Tks for sharing
Thank you so much!!!🥰🥰🥰
I'm so happy you're enjoying it!!❤️
As you're twisting the extra fabric on your basket planter, your skillful hands show us that you've had much time in plaiting beautiful braids for some precious girls or young ladies!❤
Fantastic job on that greenhouse!
Thank you so much ❤️
Your garden looks so good. Thomas is so resourceful.
Many blessings
Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Watching you roll that fabric was so satisfying that I watched it way too many times am now commenting on it 😂
Hahahaha!!
Maybe think about putting marigolds or another companion plant in top of your strawberry planters. It would be really pretty, and some protection from aphids and other critters
This is such an incredible idea! Thank you so much! ❤️
You are so creative…What an inspiration!
Thank you!❤️
I'm so happy I inspired you!!🥰
Have the tiered pots blown off in the wind?
Such a cool idea!!!
OMG everything is looking so beautiful and Thomas is really putting the work on your shed! I know you're proud of your hubby. Thanks for sharing and happy gardening?🙏❣️
Thank you so much ❤️!!
He is doing such a wonderful job 🥰🥰🥰

I really enjoyed this video! I know where 2 filing cabinets are that were my Dad's. I will be using them after seeing this video. My Dad would love it! Thanks for all the great ideas. I'm planting corn in my yard this year because the plants are so beautiful and i really like corn.
What a sweet idea ❤️ It will be so special 😍
Your garden is very nice and I love all of your diy's, very creative and inspirational.😊😊😊😊
Thank you so much! I'm so happy to inspire you ❤️
I'm so glad that you are enjoying your ability to do and to undo your garden ideas. Keep growing your food.
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Wonderful ideas, btw next time don't buy a truck load of strawberry plants... Buy like 10 and let them send out all their babies from FREE runners!
Thank you ❤️
@ourfreedomsong can you make a video explaining how you guys built the greenhouse and how you got the windows in? It's beautiful and I have a bunch of fence wood left over and would live to build one like yours!
@@okayand4871I've made one with found windows. It's like a jigsaw puzzle, fun if you're not in a hurry. You can make them as symmetrical or chaotic as you like

When you prep to eat the berries, plant the discards, even those going bad.
Try planting rice grains, dried beans, etc. purchased from the food aisles.
Winter your pepper plants and bring them out in the spring to get a jump on the harvest.
Love your repurposing!

This made my heart so happy to read!!! Thank you so much 🥰🥰🥰
Thanks for the pleasant video. I admire your cheerfulness. Abba Father bless you.

Such a beautiful garden. You can use your pine straw as mulch in strawberries. It’ll help the acid level of soil and keep you from watering as much. I have an old blender I use to chop up pine straw. Look forward to more videos
Good Gardening morning. Girl those strawberry planter ideas are amazing.🤩 and the hanging grow bag idea is awesome. I love the way your beautiful mind thinks. That she thought WOW 🤩. Your paradise is going to be amazing. Thanks for sharing ❤😊

Keep trying new things. The ones that don't work aren't failures because they still teach us something and inspire future successful ideas.
I can hear the PURE JOY in your voice. Gardening is life!!! 👊🏽

EXCELLENT INFORMATION, I BELIEVE EVERYONE OF US SHOULD OWN A PIECE OF LAND. IT IS THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS TRUE INDEPENDENCE AND YOU WONT HAVE TO DEPEND ON THE GOVERNMENT WHO DENIED US OUR 40 ACERS AND A MULE, PLUS YOU GET TO GROW YOUR OWN FOOD…..WELL DONE MY SISTA 😇🙏🏽👍🏾👏🏽
You are so much fun to watch. Your Joy is catching. One suggestion. Get some rather large washers and put them on the screws. This will give a wider support to the screws being put into post.
Love this idea!!! And thank you so much for the sweet compliment 🥰🥰🥰
I love your ideas! I’m getting more windmills! :-)
Strawberry planter ideas are so awesome. You are fun!!! You could even plant the extra strawberries around the inside fence line. They will spread and can collect repopulated strawberries the following year.
So glad I found your site. Your joy and infectious smile put a smile on my face. Your ideas are so great.
Aww! Thank you so much!!!🥰🥰🥰

Just found your channel and must say I haven't seen such a beautiful garden in a long while.. I only wish I was able to have a garden like yours.. I do grow in a few grow bags. I started some lemon seeds and cloned them on to a producing tree and I now have lemons on two trees.. Many blessing to you for sharing your ideas with us all..

Newbie here. I love your ideas and cost efficient problem solving. Such great ideas. And that shed, to die for!! Thanks for sharing with us and with such a beautiful smile and attitude. Good luck with those strawberries. Now I have to grow some!😂
Shed not she’d! Ughhh spell check!
WELCOME ❤️
Im so very happy you are here 😍😍😍
I'm extra excited that you are planning to grow strawberries ❤️❤️❤️
I did my strawberries in the way you did in the basket… only I filled two baskets with the cocoa coir and dirt then….. I put they two together with zip ties to form a globe and voila a strawberry globe. It’s a winner . You should totally try it. However you need to water them more often than you might think. I dip mine twice a day in my rain barrel. ❤😊
A strawberry globe 😍😍😍😍😍 I absolutely love how you water them! That's such a great idea!!
Way to go girl.
I am 84.and did the same too.

Oh, your thumbnail showed a metal planter! Thought I was getting a metal planter for a $1!
I'm sitting right behind the circle planter potting up the strawberry basket... I hope you give it a try! 😍
LOL, me too! I'm wondering where to get the best price on a round planter....
I thought the same thing.
Me three! Click bait - I went for it.
People can share all the tips in the world for people like you, and you still find a way to be ungrateful. You assumed from a picture instead of watching a video and finding out the facts. That's on you, not her.
Brilliant!!! #1FAN❤❤❤ Where have you been hiding!!!!
🥰🥰🥰🥰
There is no way in the world to be able to pick a favorite! All your ideas are amazing and thank you so much for sharing them!
You have such a beautiful spirit and attitude. Thank you 🌿💜
So sweet! Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
Gorgeous greenhouse and garden!
Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yes, now I know what to do with my old file cabinet!!
Genius that you are! 🏆
I must be driving on the wrong roads bc I haven't seen such great stuff! I'll for sure be keeping my eyes open wider. So happy to have found your channel!
I love your greenhouse !
Thank you so much ❤️
I use an old Tire and put my strawberries in it. I’m on year 2 and they’re doing great.
I LOVE YOUR GARDEN AND YOUR VISION OF EVERYTHING YOU PUT TOGETHER
I am also on my third year garden, and I have to say, you have done amazing work! Your hacks are great also! I love your green house and shed! ❤ your joy is infectious!
Hi!!!!!! Thank you so much!!!! I love knowing that we are on the same growing year 🥰🥰🥰
yay for you and Thomas! so happy for you! nice work!
Thank you so much ❤️
have you tried wick watering? you put your plants in , either the ground of planters, and above it, on a fence post or just elevated a bit, you put nice looking things like old watering cans, or metal bins, and you fill those with water, then you use thick dollart store twine and dip iti nto the water, then cut them to lengths that go from the water container to the plants, you can run a long twine down a row, or to one twine to each plant, then with the water container higher it will wick or draw the water out, and drawit down to the dirt, and along the roots, and ater all of the time, incase you forget to water, or it is hard to get to all of it all of the time, just wick it. and all youhave to do it remember to fill the wick water container, which can last weeks, or days depending on the plants, and the temps outside. but it works so well,
Thank you so much for sharing your love and passion.💖💖This is so awesome!! Gardening brings me such joy!! I love to repurpose also. I can't wait to have land again to do this. In the meantime I'm working from my patio. Thank You Lord for my Promised Land!

AMAZING IDEAS! MY FAV IS THE BLACK PLASTIC BASKET.
Mine too!!! Thank you so much for chiming in! ❤️
I've seen people use leaves, small sticks, shredded paper, homemade compost and all kinds of organic materials that you can find in the yard, at home and in the woods to fill up the bottom of containers so they aren't purchasing so much soil
