Another thing to get is the mesh laundry bags. They are a pretty large size. I use them over my blueberry and raspberry plants , Drape it over a frame of some sort (like a wood frame or a tomato cage) to protect your fruit from being eaten by the birds. Easy to pull up or off, doesn’t impede sunlight and works great
I use those to protect my plants from the dreaded Japanese beetles. 🪲 I actually cut them to make a “sheet” so I can just lay them on the plants. Works great!
Thank you for sharing this! Japanese beetles are a disaster for my young apple trees! Got to get some milky spore for the orchard & blueberry area. Thanks again!

The wire trash baskets can also be placed in the planting hole to help prevent moles or other underground critters from getting to your plants roots. Roots can still grow through rhe wire mesh.
So… admittedly I am quite new to vegetable gardening, been researching lots of hacks as of late. Would the basket (buried) work for potatoes? Just pull it up and shake the dirt out… for easy harvesting?
I get shower caps from hotels…my friends who travel know to grab them for me. For plant tags I cut along the length of yogurt and cottage cheese containers and make them into strips. I cut the bottoms of milk jugs or use big clear spinach or lettuce containers for mini greenhouses.
Another thing that works is the big plastic container that those cheese puffballs come in. They're taller than the cloches and have a nice wide opening.
Good ideas. I used the $$ laundry baskets, which are pretty flimsy for holding actual clothing, over my squash and brassicas. The deer and the rabbits left my plants alone and the neighbours had lots of interesting ideas about what I was doing with laundry baskets all over my front yard. 😂 Loved it!

I should have read the comments before I left mine, but that's mostly what I use that can for it for. It's amazing for sifting! The mesh slowly begins to rip along the top, but I get a full season use out of it.
Good ideas. A suggestion on making holes - get a cheap soldering iron to make the holes. Depending on the type of plastic, it can shatter and make not so nice holes. I had that happen to me, so now I use a soldering iron.

I just discovered the dollar tree clotched this year. They finally are carrying them at my store. But just like you are use water jugs too. It’s nice that we have choices.
Dollar Tree also has small black wire pencil holders (in the school supply section) that look exactly like the black wire trash cans. Those are good to put over individual small plants with a couple of garden staples and they will keep squirrels and rabbits off your plants when they are tiny or small.
I bet my ground squirrels would just dig under anything. I love them but I hate them too! not looking forward to having even the native plants do well here cuz last year the squirrels and chipmunks ate almost all the sprouts and then it was so dry here. Gardening sucks sometimes when its always fighting someone or the weather. you are very clever!
For the showercap hack I prefer to use a rubberband, which can also be aquired at dollar tree. Then you can remove them more easily and the moisture wont affect the adhesion of the tape.
Great tips! I like the cloche and wire basket ideas for protecting seedlings and the shower caps for wintersowing (it's better than using plastic wrap). I'll be visiting my Dollar Tree for these items and check out the seeds too! TFS!
For the bell cloches, I have used shish kabobs to anchor the jars down. The cloche has pre-drilled holes on the lip. I just push the skewers through those little holes, and the cloche will remain in place even during a windstorm. This has worked fine in my raised beds even during late February, here in Washington state. I should have fresh lettuce and spinach in another few weeks.
I love love love your suggestions for gardening on the cheap. Thank you! May I help with the first item? It's pronounce like "clothes" but with an "-sh" at the end. You are absolutely correct that french sometimes pronounces an "e" like "-ay" but you will know when it's pronounced that way because there is an accent egout over the "e". It's a small "back slash"- /. Thank you for all your suggestions!
Love those black baskets. They really work well to protect my tomato seedlings from the myriad of squirrels that dig in my yard. Once the roots are established and the plants grow taller I just take them off and store.
I am so glad I clicked on your video! I’ve been trying to figure out what to do about the squirrels because my backyard is a squirrel Haven, and the wastebasket idea is genius!
I use the bottle shake method for seeding, & fertilizer. I use empty Parmesan cheese container and or an empty container from large bottle gravy powder. Or spice container. All come with shaker type tops, so do not require burning holes in plastic (yuck) & the cost is nothing from already used/discarded containers. The clothe covers are Awesome‼️. I use the wire baskets over plants, however I’ve cut out the bottom of that wire grid-mesh trash can so plants can grow tall, they remain protected, and unrestricted. Inside the upside down wire waste basket . Keep up the good work. 👍
great gardening tips going to use my shower caps and also purchase a garden cloche to germinate seeds makes a great greenhouse effect!!! I am a senior and i have been gardening since age 20 and still loving it!
The wire waste basket also works very well for a compost/dirt sifter. It only lasts about one season for that use, eventually tears along the top, but it's my favorite thing for that purpose.
I'm always looking for something to protect my tulip bulbs (in pots) from squirrels. Wire waste baskets will be perfect! Also, the hot point of a glue gun will melt a hole in plastic.
That’s a good idea about the waste basket! How clever. A couple years ago the deer 🦌 have gotten a hold of my vegetables. This is good for those who live by the woods!
Thank you! These are such great ideas and the waste basket is much more convenient than chicken wire! I’m definitely making a dollar tree run this weekend!
I usually don''t watch "Best things to buy at..." on you tube, but this one was on gardening and so I took a look. Wow! I had no idea that you could find things that were this nice for the garden at Dollar Tree. Especially liked the little baskets! My chickens and ducks can work a number on new plantings and seeds without protection. Thank you for posting this.
Brian, you are a man after my own heart! Last year I discovered those wire wastepaper baskets (at least, I think that's what they are!) like the ones you're showing in tip #5, and thought, "H'mm. For $1.25, these are a whole heap cheaper than buying pre-made poultry mesh cloches for anywhere from $17 to $30-something apiece, and a darned sight easier than trying to produce my own." *And* my local Dollar Tree had them in black, even last year (but that might vary from store to store?) As it happened, last night we were out and about and picked up five of those, in white. I may have to go back today and get some more, only in black. Last year we thought a few this year, a few more next year...and every year...until we have plenty of them to protect seedlings. We also picked up some of those cloches last gardening season, had the best of intentions to protect plants from early and late frosts; life interfered and the garden suffered and those cloches languished in the back seat of the car, and turned a yellow-y color. I suppose those aren't going to be much good for daytime use but should still keep plants a tad warmer on very chilly nights? Anyone else viewing and commenting: do you have input on this?
I love these baskets and have about 25. I was able to get them before the prices went up to $1.25. I would enjoy having the pretty cloches but you are right that the prices are just way out of line. The ones that I really like are in the $35 range so that's not going to happen 🥲. I would not worry about the color of the cloche. They may not be transparent with the yellow color but they will still let light in. Check them with a flashlight from the inside just to be sure. If light is coming out than light will be going in.
@@leeluv96That's an idea! I'll have to ask himself whether he has any headlight lens restorer; I know he had some at one point. But I'm wondering about this, because headlight lens restorer is used to "grind" away the roughened surface of the lens which occurs during normal driving, all sorts of weather, and so on: it's on the surface. Because the cloches are so much thinner, and the color change may go all the way through, I'll have to experiment on one small area of just one cloche. Carefully. Thank you again! 😊
Shower caps are probably cheaper, but another good thing to use is press and seal plastic wrap and then you don’t have to tape it. Thanks for all the good tips.
As Brian commented to my milk jug cloche suggestion, that's a wintertime thing! When the weather warmed up, we took them off. We're zone 7b. Actually we had a late hard freeze in March, I had to quickly put them back on for a couple days. You can't leave them on permanently or the plants would get cooked. It's just for freeze protection.
I actually went to Dollar Tree today and stocked up on a lot of the things you recommended! Saved me a ton of money. Instead of a BPA free bottle, I'll use an empty bottle from my recycling! I couldnt find the waste baskets in black but I got them in white! Thanks for this video :)
Dude! I've been trying to get started growing some stuff, but something WAS eating and/or messing up everything I was able to get started! I was going to buy some chicken wire or something, but that wire bin hack is genius! Thanks!
I use those glass punch bowls that I can find in donation stores, flea markets, etc. They are cheap and work well and I can store and use them again and again.
I use those little caged waste baskets to protect my plants from gophers. For some reason they like my yard more than my neighbors yard, so I dig a hole enough for it to fit in, fill with soil and fertilizer and put my plant in. Last year I wasn't able to plant my garden and at the end of summer when I was able to go out side, a gopher had tunneled up along the side of it, but didn't bite into the wire. I'm sure they could, but for some reason, they didn't. I've already bought some for this year's garden that I can't wait to start. I'm getting some cattle panels delivered this week so I can make some arches. I missed my garden so much.
@@seanaames6855Tractor Supply delivered them to me. I signed up for their reward membership in the store, I think it's called Neighbors or something like that. Every three months they send you four vouchers, two are for free delivery and the other two are for free trailer rentals. It's one of the best reward programs I've signed up for and I'm signed up to many in a lot of different stores. I loved having that perk from there because I only have an SUV and I'd never be able to have gotten them. This year I'm setting them up.

I like to winter sow my veggies also. I didn't know dollar tree had bell cloche I will definitely try to get some of those and the water bottles too, great hacks! Thanks! Much Love and Blessings
Some great ideas there. I have some to share as well to save money 1) I reuse the plastic bottle or cans from juice or pickles 2) I recycle the plastic bags from wrapped vegetables to cover plants 3) i use large 1 gall clear OJ to act like bell/dome to cover plants as well
I've been on the look out for those at DT but still no luck. I find that my local DT locations never seem to get things I see others finding on UA-cam.
Thank you for sharing these tips, especially the bottle that you drilled holes into. My lawn is ugly so I was going to buy grass seed but had no idea how to evenly distribute the seeds. I am going to try this.

you reuse the containers that you get rotisserie chicken in at Costco’s

Thanks for the ideas! It never occurred to me to use the cloches or wire wastebaskets that way! Clever!!
Dude! I've been trying to get started growing some stuff, but something WAS eating and/or messing up everything I was able to get started! I was going to buy some chicken wire or something, but that wire bin hack is genius! Thanks!
Go for it!
The wire waste basket is such a good idea!
Thanks!
Really nice simple ideas. Thanks. And, yes, cloche rhymes with bosh, posh, cosh etc. Never mind. The information is what matters. 😊
Great garden hacks, I always have issues with squirrels digging up seeds or new seedlings, the baskets are a great idea. Thank you
You are so welcome!
I use those glass punch bowls that I can find in donation stores, flea markets, etc. They are cheap and work well and I can store and use them again and again.
Those were such great ideas! Thank you so much, Brian. I will use them because I sure need to save some $$$! God bless.
Thanks for the tip. God bless.
You bet!
Good tips. Rubber bands around shower cap can work and be removed easily as well
Very true!
Great video 😊 thanks for sharing and happy gardening 🌿🌱😊🤗
Thanks for visiting
Truly enjoyed your video I have seen these items at the store and wondered how to use them !!! Thank you for sharing your ideas !!!
You are so welcome!
I love using the shower caps & the cloches for sure from DT! Nice TFS
Dollar Tree stores near me don't have these items, their garden items mainly consist of one side of a 4 sided display rack
Dollar Tree online has many items available in smaller quantity minimums.😊
Praytell who will deliver cattle panels?
@bombshell.13
I would love to know who delivered the cattle panels, as well!
@@n0nitwitz reply is below...sorry I missed your question.

Glad I could help. Thank you for being part of the channel.
I need some of those clear dishes to go under my pots and I'm definitely getting a few of those wire baskets to protect my babies from my chickens! Thanks for the tips.
I get foil cake pans from my local dollar store. I can put seedlings in the foil pan to water from the bottom
This was a great post. I will use most of these ideas. On second thought maybe all of the ideas.
So had it was helpful!
Love the waist basket hack! Great idea
Thank you!! 😊
I'm going to try to use this wastewater basket yo keep the squirrels from digging up my bulbs
That wire waste basket works well to sift your soil. If I'm trying to get small rocks or plant debris out of soil for top dressing or seed starting
Thanks for sharing such valuable gardening information.
It's my pleasure
Awesome hacks!
I like your hacks. I will go get the black basket and the clear bells
Great! Thanks for being a part of the channel!
Great hacks! Thanks for sharing and will be ready for more as they are arrive! Blessings
Great tips, going to try several of them. Thanks 😊
Have fun!
I like to winter sow my veggies also. I didn't know dollar tree had bell cloche I will definitely try to get some of those and the water bottles too, great hacks! Thanks! Much Love and Blessings
You are so welcome
i also use $1 store plastic cake cover.
Thanks for sharing.
Awesome information
Great ideas. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Genius...pure genius!
I use supermarket bags, held on by rubber bands or just tied on, to cover pots. I leave the bags loose to grow tall corn.
I use the cloches to protect against flea beetles!
The hack with the wire waste baskets genius ! Thank you for the tips , there all good 😊
You are so welcome!
Some great ideas there. I have some to share as well to save money 1) I reuse the plastic bottle or cans from juice or pickles 2) I recycle the plastic bags from wrapped vegetables to cover plants 3) i use large 1 gall clear OJ to act like bell/dome to cover plants as well
Great tip!
Thanks so much and very informative. ❤❤❤❤
Glad it was helpful!
Great tips! Thank you. Easy and and not complicated to do.
I've been on the look out for those at DT but still no luck. I find that my local DT locations never seem to get things I see others finding on UA-cam.
I love all of your tips!
Thank you! I’m glad my content is helpful to you.
Loved your suggestions. Will head to dollar tree to stock up. Thanks
Great ideas!
Thank you for sharing these tips, especially the bottle that you drilled holes into. My lawn is ugly so I was going to buy grass seed but had no idea how to evenly distribute the seeds. I am going to try this.
Can mix sand in with seeds if you need them scattered a little more sparingly too, especially good for tiny seeds, not sure about grass seed though.
Thank you very much for the video.
You are welcome!
The mesh wastebasket will allow rain or irrigation to pass through and will allow those critical pollinators to get to the flowers! Good call.
😊😊 you can also plant in used grape containers. They already have holes and snap real nice.
Yes! Thank you!
Great ideas! I like the way you think!!
