I was there when they shot this. Amazing night! They played for nearly three hours. No opening act. What was even cooler was that they didn't use a stage. Just set up on the ground with the crowd. I was able to find myself in the video. They opened the show, played a few songs, then they played this while they shot it. Then they would play it again after a few songs and film it again. They played it around five or six times that night. It was a free show. They provided free bus rides to the site (Brooklyn Bridge) from Manhattan.
RIP their bassist Bones Hillman. After a battle with cancer he died at the age of 62 in his home of Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA. He'll always be remembered.
Sovereignty was never ceded! I'm an American, but I'm part Native as well, with ancestry from the Winnebago (Ho-Chunk) tribe as well. The resilience of Native people around the world has never let me down.
One of the top sleeper bands from the eighties. Countless number of great songs that no one has ever even heard, unless they made the airwaves. The bass line on this particular song is tremendous. Their songs have real meaning, and a lot of it is happening right before our very eyes in the modern day. These guys were way ahead of their time.
We saw them back in the 90's in Europe & they are still much loved to this day . I was impressed by their live performance - one of the best rock bands ever .
Luckily our NYC based rock station was playing "Sometimes", and they happened to be playing live in Central Park as the gigantic anti nuclear weapons march where people were marching through part of the park. Became a fan, and them 2x's at later shows. Excellent music, shows!
This song came out almost 3 decades ago, and i still can't get enough of it. it's one of my favorite songs of all time, and not just by the Oils. if a week goes by without me hearing this song, i go into relapse. i think its that good - both the message and the melody. i finally got to see them live in 2017 in Oakland, CA and it was incredible...a bucket list item i thought i'd never be able to cross off.
I had heard Blue Sky Mining and Beds Are Burning and liked those, but when this track dropped in the states I was really hooked. Great band - reminds me of The Tragically Hip from Canada.

These guys are the most sincere rockers of multiple generations either side of there own generation with the topics they raise in there music .. they never produced a shallow track or gap filler to finish off an album .. each track has a punch in the face impact written on a foundation of uncomfortable truth and facts .. backed up with a unique sound produced by intelligent musicians.
This video, I figured out was made for the American audience, when MTV still had music. I later bought a DVD of the Oil's videos and "live" -it's not on there. I went to Australia in 1986, traveled with my Parents for three weeks, flying between locations - river extrusion into the Outback from Darwin, Wine tours, sheep farm visit, and Tasmania. I got into the Oil's after, buying "10-1" after seeing "the power and the passion" I saw them "live" only once in 1994, here in Ohio, powerful and awesome! I have learned a fair amount of Australian history, and culture, and would hope to return, someday. The references in "Tuganini" to keeping the crown, there was a movement, by vote, in the 90's to not have the British Monarch still "rule/preside" over independent Australia in the 90's -yet the vote of the nation was to keep the Royal link. Around 2000, I was living in Chicago, Grad School. I was waiting for an EL train (elevated/subway -to those who don't know) A man sat down, talking on his cell phone, sounded like he was from Oz. When he was off his phone, I asked If he was from Oz -yeah! I told him that I'd traveled there years back. I asked if they were going to do another vote on the Royals. He said "maybe in a few years" but the old generation still like them. Then, he said "What have the Pommies, done for us, really" -I knew the term, and the question made me think of Monty Python "Life of Brian" with the question of the Roman, and answer of about 16 benefits. I responded, "Well they sent their convicts to start you nation -then, they sent you into some horrible battles like Gallipoli" "Too F**kin' right! You know out history, Mate" - The EL arrived, yet each needed a different train, ended the conversation. Dedicated fan of the Oil's!
Never forget that Peter Garrett and his bandmates defiantly stood on the Avenue of the Americas, and openly mocked the oil giant Exxon in front of its NYC building with their music for its horrific pollution of Prudhoe Bay (The Valdez) -- when no one else had the guts to say a word. They shut down the busiest city street in the world for an hour and excoriated the criminals, who would not come outside to face them.
Songs these days have no meaning..no soul..no power..no passion and no reason for people to reflect on injustices that never get spoken about without songs like this to remind people.

Right behind you, Peter & Midnight Oil. We haven't gone away away either. Maybe someday this silent majority (unseen) will put you back in the driver's seat. Because I'd back passion everyday!.
