@@RisingTidesACI'll agree with him. I'm actually in the process of compiling my personal all time Top 100, and this song is definitely going to be in it. Great music by hyper talented musicians and song writers, but if we listened to them the world would come to a stop and everything we know would not exist. That is what is wrong with liberal and woke ideology. They want to take away what the world runs on. Money, fossil fuels, free enterprise, etc. Sometimes people, wars are necessary to preserve peace and freedom. So no, Midnight Oil's political views were naive and not realistic in the world.= of the 80's and today. But I love Midnight Oil.
Midnight Oil should have been much bigger than they were. It says something about humanity: when someone says something of meaning or in this case sings something of meaning , no one wants to listen nor pay attention. It is truly a shame.
So here I am in 2024, a “more than😉” middle-aged Australian, listening to this & feeling as though things will never change. Whether it’s the Somme & Gallipoli, through WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, & on & on it goes - the list is endless & the damage done (physical, emotional, psychological & more) is immeasurable. I have no answers to this ongoing human condition, just a very heavy heart. Back when this song was released things, at least here🇦🇺, seemed to be heading in a positive direction especially in regards to the indigenous community. There were collaborations with Aboriginal musicians, tours to remote communities etc. Now I see so much division & anger, with less conciliation☹️ This country is far from perfect, I doubt ANY country can be all things to all people, but when I look around the world & see what is occurring- I’ll stay here & be bloody grateful 👍🇦🇺
Are you also listening to Norwegian radio. 40+ years of music career, and still the only song those music experts know is "Beds are Burning". Nothing wrong with the song, but please, sometimes another one would be great.
My American father served in WWII and came back with irreparable scars of which he rarely spoke and about which I knew better than to ask. I'm not sure I know what Midnight Oil meant to say with this video, but two things I know: first, thank God for those who gave their lives, their futures, their sanities (including the brave ANZAC soldiers of WWI and many others) for the freedoms we in the West take for granted. Second, God forgive us for irresponsible wars of choice such as Iraq.
Well said. I am not exactly sure what Midnight Oil means either. Probably that we should not forget the terrible wars of the first half of the twentieth century. You are right that the West should never have invaded Iraq. It is a terrible tragedy. There was no justification. There were no WMD. It was all lies. USA and UK used Iraq against Iran and the Kurds in the 70's and 80's before they turned on Iraq. Saddam Hussein was considered a bulwark against Iran and a man who held Iraq together. Despotic regimes like Russia and China use the war in Iraq as leverage to justify the invasion of Ukraine and China's likely invasion of Taiwan and point out the hypocrisy of the West. Amazing that until Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990 Iraq was considered a 'friend' or bulwark by the USA against its enemies. This parallels the West's use of Hitler. The West saw Hitler as a bulwark against Communism. The evidence is Hitler was on the front page of TIME magazine in the 1930's and called Man of the Year! How quickly it all can change.
I m pretty sure Midnight oils message in this song is NOT TO FORGET. as in the line" these shall not be forgotten years". If we forget about these events then the world is destined to repeat history.
Those rows of white crosses are devastating to see. Never forget. My father (US Army) fought with Aussies in Korea and Vietnam - said they were the best warriors. Another great song from a vastly underrated band

Fantastic song by the oils,so powerful always makes me feel most emotional ,esp now I can fully comprehend the enormous loss of life, having visited Northern France and Belgium, the number of graves marked " unknown soldier, known only to God" and ages of the fallen really hits you. Goosebumps. I actually studied and learned about Australian history after hearing the lyrics in this song many years ago. Clearly one of the most underrated rock bands of the 80s and 90s.....very, very few singers have ever put that much passion into their work. And who else could win Aussie Song of the Year nearly 40 years after their debut... for Gadigal Land in 2020.
41 years ago I saw Midnight Oil at The Royal Antler Narrabeen. I have to thank the boys from The Strand house at Dee Why for taking me to the gig. It was late 1979, a warm night, people pouring jugs of iced water on each other and Peter Garrett's head, steam coming from the Lead Singer's bald cranium. Their music and especially their lyrics have made THE OILS one of the most important Rock bands in history. This new song ' Gadigal Land' is an instant Oils Classic. Words cannot describe how much I love this track. Sydney Radio station MMM played it every hour yesterday, so credit to them for that. Before they played it the first time I was thinking " oh, I hope it's good " I loved it from the opening chords, the thumping Drums, the throbbing Bass and Garrett's vocals delivering every word that is punching the Colonial invaders in the face. Well done boys, this is excellent!
To those I say ..... Listen to the entire Blue Sky Mine LP... I was fortunate enough to see them on that tour ( Mann Music Center Philly Pa ) blew me away...

I like how when this band dedicates their music to real justice no matter how popular the song becomes...every song seems to turn into gold.
1987
It changed Australia for the better
With some pretty tasty melodies to drive it home
This song was so underrated.... My all time favorite midnight oil song
I have added this to a Playlist of songs about wars and the system, to see it click on the Playlist part of my channel and you will find the folder of songs titled....' Songs to make you think' . Over n out

That moment when you come back to a song and your English has improved enough to actually understand the lyrics
Sad day for them & us all! If we can't sing in time LET'S DANCE LIKE PETER ❤🦘🐨
My grandfather was a German &servered America in we1
Typical comment or put down of the Australian accent , sadly.
@@wileybutler2716 my german great great father fought in both ww for germany
@@luckyhunter5291 Mine fought in WW2 for Germany and spent time in a POW camp for his troubles. When he got out he moved to Australia and spent the rest of his life denouncing the Nazis and only ever spoke of his time in the war with great regret at having been taken in by Hitler's lies.
all life is sacred to lose a single life is to lose to many lives with peace those dreams sung about in this song are closer to all and with pure motives to the benefit of all
Bring back good music. Peter. Thank you all. Xoxoxo
would like to comment in memory of Sen. John McCain - a true American great
Yes. Wish he was still with us.
Before they played it the first time I was thinking " oh, I hope it's good "
I loved it from the opening chords, the thumping Drums, the throbbing Bass and Garrett's vocals delivering every word that is punching the Colonial invaders in the face.
Well done boys, this is excellent!
This band will NEVER not be RELEVANT. Absolute MAGIC!🙏🏽💕🎶🌹👍🏿
To those I say ..... Listen to the entire Blue Sky Mine LP... I was fortunate enough to see them on that tour ( Mann Music Center Philly Pa ) blew me away...
The years I've lived through won't be forgotten. Viva Midnight Oil!
Great song about anyone reflecting on life and regretting past decisions. Our most difficult years teach us valuable lessons and make us who we are.
@@Mmmm2217 No and they likely never will. Limit the power of the state.
This is real music!
I live 10 years now in Australia, and this is absolutely my all time favorite of Australian songs! Wow... I don`t regret to immigrate to this great country!
welcome to aus mate.
You made the right choice m8
Welcome,
Just don''t let the Dicks get you down, or barrack for Collingwood.
Also you left the totalitarian child-kidnapping regime of The Netherlands - good choice!
This was the final song of the night in Orange on the 26/2/2022. Absolutely brilliant end to an awesome concert. Peter running around the stage with a flare like a lunatic. Glad i got to see the oils live on their final tour
Peter Garrett was born in 1953.
So, he'll be 70 next year.
Saudades da adolescência....de vários amigos...e da 89.1 a rádio rock...
Wow. I’d forgotten how HOT these boys were back in the day!
