  • After the niche success of the i3, #BMW hit the drawing board to come up with an #EV that would better appeal to the US market and take on the Tesla Model 3. The 2022 BMW #i4 arrives next year, sporting two model variants including a hot M50 version that we had a chance to sample in Germany.

      @@Ifyoudonttakeitucantfakeit I drove one - super fun to drive, has some really cool tech, and even though I don't love the tablet stuck to the dash thing, it probably has the best OS for any car. That said, it felt like a car made for people who don't really like to drive (driving position, the layout around the driver, the small steering wheel, and the lack of non-touch controls for obvious stuff), and the build quality left a ton to be desired.

      Well as an EV, there's literally NOTHING is like an i3. Its engineering, its body structure, even the glues that they had to produce to put the machine together. i3 was never intended as a comercial car success but a Lab-car, which sold over 250K since 2014!!!. Regarding the i4 its nothing but a regular gas car, with an EV engine, all the Pros of a dedicated platform like the i3's, are lost in the i4. As an EV, it's a shame for BMW.

    I just got an i3 and I absolutely love it. I really wanted a Tesla but I couldn't afford one. Used ones are way over priced and I was also scared about the quality control issues. I heard you constantly needed to replace the door handles which is stupid on a 60k car. The inside is just boring on a Tesla. For 50k I wanted something more luxurious. I chose the i3 because of the price, it's unique, and fun to drive. It would be a perfect car if it had a 300 mile range. I have the range extender just in case. I am very intrigued by the i4. The only way I will be able to afford one is when it is a couple years old and drops in price.

    • @carl5438
      @carl5438 2 роки тому

      We can tell you haven't test driven the Model 3 because it doesn't have the door handles you are talking about, that's the Model S (70K+) that had issues with the door handles. BTW, most people don't need more than 200-mile range for daily driving. For example, i drive to the office once a week on a round trip of 164 miles. My Model 3 RWD (charged at home) was my choice. On longer road trips, a bad back and knees, two and half hours driving is max distance before i have to stop and stretch and take Bio break. That's 163 miles at 65 MPH. Tesla has 30K Superstations (www.tesla.com/supercharger) worldwide and many are situated along most major highways make a long road trip smooth and less stressful.

      Vincent it has no frunk because the i4 is not a pure electric platform like the Teslas and the i3. Notice it has a transmission tunnel running the floor of the centre back seat. BMW wants the batteries to charge to 80%. brings the estimage down to about 222. THen of course there's winter. THe m50 starts at 269 so you can do the math. I really want to like the i4 but it’s held back by existing ICE platform:
    - No front trunk? Why do you even need a tall hood for? Most EVs have a low hood and an advantage in visibility.
    - 400 pounds more than the model 3 for no reason. “It drives well” it can drive even better without the extra weight
    - Exterior design with zero care for drag coefficient. i4 can easily get 20% more range if they designed the exterior right.

      Tesla fans laughing as they have to dig into the menus to find the one-pedal driving mode.
      Don't confuse minimalism for simplicity. Minimalism is where you eliminate the number of tools neccessary for the job, Simplicity is where you reduce the number of steps for the job.
      Tesla's minimalism means you have only the touchscreen to do everything in the car. But to do anything you have to tap it several times to reach the controls you need (like one pedal driving).
      How do you engage one-pedal mode in a BMW i4? You flick the gear selector. Now, that gear selector can do only one thing (select gears) but it does that thing _in one step._ Simplicity.
      It's the difference between a car and a computer case with four tires and a steering wheel attached.

      right stop comparing these 2 cars. Tesla Model 3 is the bench mark and a proper EV that sets a standard in the industry with most reliable dedicated supercar networks, highest range and highest performance for the money, best value car, most desirable ev in the world award winner, highest safety rating, best tech and autopilot feature as standard and a lot more etc whereas the i4 is a fossil diesel car converted into an ev with inefficient drivetrain, heavier weight than model s plaid with over 1000bhp world's fastest production car, well basically a shitty ev that is not designed from ground to be an ev but a fossil car with transmission tunnel in the middle. just a ripped off car with a giant battery pack. yes so stop comparing...

      Using "3" and "S" was just Musk trying to equate his cars with the best in their segments in his customers' minds. Most fell for it initially, but over the years people realize Tesla is not a luxury automaker; they are EV "Chevrolet". The cost of EVs made the price of the Model S and 3 close to the S-Class / 3-Series, but the quality of the cars themselves were worse even than a Chevy Malibu or Cruze. Everyone knows this BMW quality is two planets apart from any Tesla (even a Civic destroys any Tesla quality wise).
