*Another little update, and it truly disgusts me to have to do this. We are here to talk Skincare - not pass judgment on other people. I never delete comments on my videos because I believe in freedom of speech; people can tear me down and destroy my self-esteem and I’ll find ways to deal with it. But the second people start attacking others, especially for things they are struggling with or that are out of their control such as their voice, religion, race, sexuality, demeanor, mental health, other conditions etc, that’s where I draw the line. Mt comments section is not the place to tear others down. It’s OK to have healthy conversations and disagree with opinions, but it’s not OK to use this area to judge others. Thank you*

80% of comments here are about Dr Dray not about what she said. Contrary to that, I actualy learn from comments on Dr Drays's chanel. And btw what she said in her video is valid! It may be that followers here lack sufficient attention span. Judging by comments they tend to yawn a lot and are easily irritated. 🤷‍♀️

Thank you for sharing such informed thoughts as always Cassandra!! Loved hearing your perspective- I will say, people give The Ordinary a really hard time but the price point is a HUGE aspect that makes me love it so much. So many of my viewers can't afford standard skin care (let alone a dermatologist), and I don't think anyone should be excluded from skin care because of income. And considering the price, they have some really high quality formulas. Both she and you made amazing points! ❤️

The fact that she has a laser device for her head is her business. It's not like she's pushing everyone to buy the device. I'm sure that I own some things that may seem pricey to some folks and vice-versa. I have tried many things that Dr. Dray has commented on, especially some basic cleansers, moisturizers, oils and sunscreens. They are worked and only one of those items (a sunscreen) was pricey.

It's also funny because in this same video, Dr. Dray compliments several other The Ordinary products, and even says she regularly uses one of them (a moisturizer, I think?). She seems to only dislike their granactive retinol serums. Also, like...if you like TO retinol, and it works for you, then just use it? I don't think she's bashing it because it's each cheap, rather because she finds other products give better results. While they may be more effective for some people, people have various skin conditions and encouraging everyone to get prescription forms that have a higher chance of causing irritation is a bit short-sighted. I would have liked it if she addressed pros/cons of these alternatives, who it caters to (for e.g. highly sensitive skin or the opposite) and if they are vegan/cruelty-free. I find her trustworthy regardless, but she can be quite aggressive when suggesting products.

Some peolle here will never be satisfied. She's a Doctor with a PhD degree, so an MD. PhD, so someone with not only clinical but also research experiences. Since she's not in her clinic giving personal advice, she doesn't have to care about any individual's anecdotal experiences, since that is not what clinical science is about. I think it's awesome that she only recommends products with the highest level of peer-reviewed evidence available; that's the only way to properly recommend something when you are watched by thousands of people. She's also transparent when she likes something purely for how it feels or smells. Make your own decisions and visit your own dermatologists should something bad happen. I think Dr. Dray is far from being perfect, but regarding skincare science, it's a bit ridiculous when people use anecdotes to dimiss her opinions as an expert.

I mentioned this on her video and will repeat it here - while I like Dr Dray one thing that annoys me is her stance on evidence. I totally agree it is important to have evidence for efficacy claims. But she tends to equate a lack of evidence with a lack of efficacy, which does not have to be the case. She had people in the comments questioning their own use of the granactive retinoid - one person even commented that they thought they should stop using it, even though it was the only product that had cleared their acne and was providing a lot of benefits. We had to assure her that she had evidence - her own experience was evidence. Of course, anecdotal evidence is not going to fly for the whole community, but if a product is working for you then a lack of scientific evidence is really not that big a deal. Dr Dray also flip flops a lot - one video she claimed the Ordinary NMF was not good because it didn't contain ceramides (rather, it contains what they call 'ceramide precursors' which is a blend of amino acids). A few months later she said she really liked it. I asked her about the change of opinion and she stated that she had read evidence showing that topically applied amino acids actually does have a lot of benefits. I think people need to realise that she is a dermatologist, not a cosmetic scientist or formulator. She deals with people who have problems with their skin, so of course she is going to be more focussed on medical treatments. On the other hand, a cosmetic scientist is going to be more innovative and experimental, and the reputable ones will do efficacy tests - in fact big companies like Estee Lauder or Loreal are going to want to know if a new ingredient or formulation is going to work so they will test. Of course they will be very selective with providing evidence for the products they bring to market but that is just good marketing sense

I don't really agree with this statement... Essential oils were used heavily for a long time (and still are!) and resulted in problems with people's skin long-term. Many companies touted their effectiveness in giving a fresher feeling and exfoliation, which they do, but at a cost. Without the scientific literature to back up the overall positive claims, you end up with a product that can ruin your skin. A lot of people continually use these products and don't know that they are bad for your skin (I didn't in the beginning that's for sure). While this is an extreme example, and the granactive isn't something that is dangerous (most likely), scientific evidence is important when making claims. And TO is simply not delivering this. She did not tell people to stop using the product, just that the whole granactive part is baseless and that the important ingredient is the undisclosed percentage of encapsulated retinol.

As a med student I stand firmly behind her. Anecdotal evidence from people doesn't mean the specific ingredient or in this case, a product, is actually effective or has any observable merit. Especially when that evidence comes from people who also use other products and active ingredients at the same time - it's hard to tell which one makes the difference. There are also variables in diet, stress, hydration etc.. And ofcourse placebo effect holds true for skin as well - sometimes skin "feels" different i.e. more smooth, fresh etc when it's actually not. Lack of clinical trials and research is a problem. It doesn't neccessarily mean the product isn't effective but... You can't say it is. When it comes to science; there are no opinions. Just facts. And the fact is it hasn't yet been proven that these retinols work.

I think Dr Dray would agree with most of your criticisms because she advocates using the best products that you can afford and that your skin can tolerate. If Tretinoin or Adapalene are too irritating for your skin, or are too expensive, or you're in a country where you can't get Adapalene for $9 from your pharmacy (or Amazon), then your best option is a cosmeceutical retinol/retinal, of which The Ordinary makes good-quality ones at a great price point.

However, I think there is nothing to worry about for this particular category of products. I used to be a seller on Amazon, and it take a lot of time and money to get permission to sell in this category. Hi! Cosmetic chemist here working for one of the companies you mentioned! We definitely do extensive clinical studies and stability for products we bring out to market, this to ensure long term efficacy and quality. While this is good marketing, we also pride ourselves in delivering actual results to consumers especially if they're paying prestige prices. Some companies do not take the extra hurdles of testing their products and are quick to bring them to market -so essentially the consumers are the initial test panelists 😅.
Dr. D is simply referring to credible evidence based products that have proven long term benefits vs. products with little to no studies/anecdotal evidence. For products that have no real data published, you will just need to take their claims with a grain of salt.
Just be informed and choose whichever products you are willing to take a leap of faith for :)

So, I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this response video since a lot of the criticisms against Dr Dray's opinion seem to have been taken out of context. Dr Dray is rightfully criticizing TO for the very ridiculous claims the granactive retinol can do. I have always been a fan of TO but without the science to back up "works better", "less irritating" and "more stable" than regular retinol products, it takes away from their credibility. For a company that places such emphasis on science and transparency as a pillar of their brand, it's questionable to see these kind of claims they are making (Estee Lauder behind this?!). While you agree with this, you mention that Dr. Dray is not a fan of the retinol squalane line, which I didn't quite understand. I don't believe she was touting that regular retinol is useless. Word for word, she said in her video (timestamp 6:20) "Now retinol is an ingredient for which we do have a lot of literature to support its use as an anti-aging ingredient, and while it's not as effective as tretinoin, it is definitely a lot less irritating and easier to tolerate." Her point is that the scientific literature is not as robust for these cosmetic ingredients than it is for say, Differin or other vit-a prescriptions. In her video she was not saying to completely avoid using retinol ingredients, just that the science behind them has not been studied as much as prescription medication, ESPECIALLY so for granactive, so use them at your own discretion. In the TO granactive, they also don't disclose the percentage of the encapsulated retinol, which is an excellent point and she states that this is where the money is at in this product. In the end, vit-a is not a simple ingredient that you can just put on. I think that the whole point of her video is that people should be wary of using such a strong ingredient, especially when something new is added into the mix that has 0 scientific backing in the literature. As always, thanks for your videos, I always look forward to hearing from you.

I completely agree with you. Why is everyone mixing retinol and granactive retinoid? Did people not understand Dr. Dray's video? She criticized TO for their baseless claims for the *granactive retinoids*, NOT the retinols. She specifically says retinol has been proven to help with acne and aging, just not as much or as fast as retinal ou retinoic acid.
I love TO. I really do. But even I roll my eyes at their claims for their granactive retinoids ("offers a multi-fold better effect against signs of aging than retinol, retinyl palmitate and nearly all other forms of non-prescription retinoid." -- 7:02), based on virtually NO EVIDENCE. They're supposed to be a science-based company. I expected more transparency.

Sarah Kfan you should be fine! It is a good cheap retinol to see if your skin can benefit for it. If you use it consistently you may find that if you are able to get your hands on a retin-a prescription, you’ll be able to better tolerate it as well. In the meantime, retinol can certainly help you with anti-aging and acne.

They don't hit the same receptors as each other but they definitely do overlap. I find their anti aging capabilities to be relatively similar but I find tret a LOT easier to tolerate, even at higher dosages. 0.07 percent tret feels so much gentler for me than 0.025 differin (adapalene only, not the benzoyl combined formula). I find breakouts to pass faster on differin, though. If you're prepared to apply and reapply sunscreen and Moisturizer and can't get tret, try differin! Retinoid induced sun sensitivity is real though. So apply and reapply. Eventually just 185 hr walks with my dog in direct sun with a hat is enough for me to "feel" the sun damage.

People are gonna feel a different way about skincare than others, I’m also interested in the ordinary retinol products but I think a ton of what dr. Dray says does make sense. And whether we like it or not, it is better that a product has consistent and many studies shown on it before you can be 100% sure. I don’t know whyyyy people are starting to not take a doctor seriously in the comments these days. I’m seeing so many people invalidate a doctors suggestion specifically a dermatologists because it isn’t what they want to hear and they’re not “cosmetic” dermatologists do cosmetic work too. It’s this strange Dunning-Kruger affect. This whole “it doesn’t need a lot of studies to be good” thing is making me just put my forehead in my palm because yes it does matter lol. It actually matters a lot.
Also this whole “I love Dr. Dray, BUT...” situation cracks me up because I see very few people criticizing things about her that matters. Her appearance and her voice aren’t things that matter. Her practice and her points are what we should be talking about.

Also, this is something I've noticed with the medical dogma nowadays, many people seem to believe having M.D. after your name means you are somehow beyond criticism and you're never incorrect. It reminds me of how people viewed priests in the middle ages. At the end of the day doctors are just people too, and in the field of science things are always changing and being discovered so what is considered ineffective today may be a holy grail ingredient tomorrow. I absolutely LOVE that in this video you included what was omitted in Dr Dray's video - the cruelty-free status and the availability in other countries. Of course, even when you buy cruelty-free cosmetics and you are sick and have medicine prescribed by doctor - you should take it, no doubt about that. But should we really storm the dermatologists' office just because we wanna be a bit less wrinkled when we are older? Because for many people that's the main reason they use retinols regularly and its not a valid reason for using medicine for many. Using skincare for that is not a waste of time, it's just gentler when you do not have something to be treated by a doctor. Also, the access to prescriptions can be really expensive in other countries, not only America, because, surprise, the world outside America exists (youtubers sometimes don't take this into account so I'm very grateful). Great and informative video!

Sometimes i have the feeling some Americans don't even conceive the idea that the world exists beyond the USA xD and that in other places (here in the EU for ex) our health care systems are a lot different, we don't just go and get prescriptions left and right, we are assessed by a health professional who will find the best treatment for us not just go to a doctors office and ask for tretinoin… also even going to a dermatologist, here in the Netherlands you need to see your GP first and get a clearance that you indeed need a specialized practitioner, is not only "i want to" is more 'I Need to'. and in many other countries the system works similar.

Until the month of february this year, when the first time I began to use retinol 1% and niacinamide from the ordinary. My face was already full of pimples and comedons, but in the first month, I began to have more, and after one more month, my face started to clean of acne, and now I have just red marks, and I cant believe that from all the treatments that I have tried, this was THE GOOD ONE. Even if you have insurance and access to a dermatologist, prescription tretinoin is usually only covered by insurance if it's prescribed for acne. So if you don't have acne and want to use it to treat wrinkles, most insurers consider this an elective treatment. In other words, if the reason is cosmetic and unnecessary, you're gonna pay out of pocket regardless.

Ideal for someone younger (late 20's to early 30's) who hasn't used Vit A before and is either looking to start tackling aging, or has mild acne. I use it as an an entry to anti-aging. I honestly believe my skin would not be the same without it. Yes it does make you peel like crazy, and it can be annoying. But it takes time to figure out how to combat it, and find good moisturizers to offset some of the dryness. I always make sure to use my CeraVe moisturizing lotion before I put on the tretinoin to prevent my skin from become too dry overnight. I don’t wash my face in the morning so I use Simple micellar cleansing water as a toner to refresh my face and get rid of the dryness from the night before. As a chemist I would take Dr Dre advice sometimes. Heres the tea: she only considers medical studies and this frequently is not the full info. Her video on silicones.... hhhhhh....Let me try on your claims in this video: turning an alcohol ( ol) into an aldehyde is a VERY slow process and requires catalysis and very specific conditions, i agree with Dr Dre, not likely to happen. Turning an aldehyde into an acid only requires water and right pH. To me, its not believable that any product delivering ol will enable an acid to form. I would go for aldehyde even before acid to understand if the irritation is a problem. Using an irritant as Dr Dre tells people to do, can be contraproductive if someone will be scarring due to irritation. Even better she uses an active on the top of the moisturizer. Moisturizers generate a thin barrier film which should significantly affect the absorption of an active. The cruelty free is a marketing gimmic. Active ingredients need to be tested by law. By now animal testing is by law reduced to minimum, but is still there. Look at everything arround you. Its not just your creme that is tested. All man made products can be and all new things are. Finally no polymers????? Polymers are being banned in microplatic regulation for wash off products. That’s environmental concern. Btw proteins, CH etc are technically polymers. If you are looking for a good source of info, find a biochemist and combine with Dr Dre. Then watch your video for info on how consumers use and perceive products. If all three are giving a plus, then its a green light.

You could literally see with your own eyes how much things were being shaken up internally the year leading up to Brandon's death. Huge variations between batches (big red flag they're switching to cheaper suppliers), then afterwards there's a flurry of more gimmicky products released.
A bunch of people, including myself, purchased argan oil from them and were like "this is not argan oil. This is a super low quality argan blend." Argan oil is so distinct, it's not something you'd confuse with another oil. And they tried to gaslight all of us telling us that it might be due to changes in how they were processing it. THEN they tried to say "oh maybe it's rancid", and then finally admitted they were having quality control issues with their supplier. It was so disheartening to see such a rapid decline of their brand. Fake argan oil is SO common, so the fact they weren't diligent about verifying one of the.most common scams in skincare makes me extremely cautious about the quality of any ingredient that isn't already dirt cheap.

except that's literally the opposite of this situation, Cassandra is defending this product precisely because it is an affordable entry point to retinols. Prescription strength retinoids are expensive and duh require a prescription which particularly in America between going to the dermatologist in the first place in the hopes you can get a prescription and then paying the price for the prescription, give me a fucking break, that will be astronomically more expensive than buying a product for 10 bucks. If The ordinary were charging exorbitant prices then it probably should be taken down a peg because people might feel they need to spend an absurd amount of money to get effective products and if you're spending a lot of money it better be effective and backed by science and have a proven track record, but $10 is not that big a deal and people can give it a try if they want and if it works for them then great, at the end of the day what some youtuber says regardless of whether they're a dermatologist or not is irrelevant if you are getting good results with a product, and even if you get a negative result so what? people have had negative reactions to things Dr. Dray has recommended, trying products and ceasing use if you have a negative reaction and continuing use if you have a positive reaction is the name of the game because everyone's skin is different. regardless of whether a product is recommended by a dermatologist, esthetician, or "skincare youtuber", if it works for you it works and you're only going to know for sure it will work if you try it, a "recommendation" regardless of who it's coming from is never a guarantee, and $10 is a pretty reasonable expense during the "product testing" phase of one's skincare journey.

The ordinary hasn't proven that it contains the amount of retinol it says it does or it's efficacy

    • @Wuffskers

Retinol will never be as strong as tret or adapalene duh, retinol has to be broken down into retinoic acid while tret and adapalene are DIRECT applications of retinoic acid. There is no retinol in existence that's going to be as potent as direct prescription strength retinoic acid. Singling out the ordinary seems dumb because ANY retinol is going to be weaker than tret and adapalene. I always do my own research and while I do agree with her about many things, this was not one of them. So many people simply cannot tolerate prescription retinoids, or they're too expensive, or seeing a dermatologist can take FOREVER. Otc retinols obviously are a weaker family than rx strength but they're still effective! AND if someone does purchase TO and find that they don't like it, they're out like $6. It's not gonna ruin lives. Also Dr. Dray is against so many plant extracts. I don't love fragrance in products either but there are a lot of beneficial plant derived ingredients!

Asima Nayak oh yeah? What do you know about biochemistry? What do you know about the body? I am studying medicine and trust me, I know about biochemistry and about the skin. There is a potential risk of developing an allergy to fragrance, again “potential”, and it is very very low. People with sensitive skin may have issues with fragrance, but if you know your skin doesn’t react to it, then fragrance is not an issue. I had severe acne and I saw two derms, they prescribed some products that contain fragrance. I also follow many dermatologist on Instagram and when I ask them and my dermatology teachers if we should really avoid fragrance 100% of the time their response is: “if the product is worth it, go ahead, if you can get very good results from that product then the benefits are higher than the risk of an allergy. Literally, in the real world, you can become allergic to anything, and within the two months I spent in the dermatology department, I saw 0 patients with fragrance allergy. and I think we should not just put parfum itself on or face, but dr dray just fearmongers so much about fragrance, everytime she talks about a product the first thing is “oh it has fragrance, this is bad” when literally the product has other very good ingredients, but no, it has fragrance “never put a product with fragrance”. Then she recommends instead products that will do
Nothing for your skin but yeah, “fragrance free”. The reality here is : avoid it if you can, but don’t see it as your worst enemy cause it’s not.

What do I know about body? Everyone's is different and I am no one to comment except on a general and preferably leaning towards the sensitive type basis because they make up bulk for the testing of new researched products and clinical studies.
Thirdly. I'd reiterate my point. Just because fragrance didn't affect you today doesn't mean it cannot sensitize your skin in the future.
Companies have NO reason to put fragrance in Skincare. They are gimmicky and you never know what ingredients are hidden behind the label PARFUM/FRAGRANCE. You are never aware of your product ingredient if a company does it. I believe transparency is key and companies don't follow it.
