I will just put it out there, I just finished a bottle of The Ordinary's Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane and I have seen a pretty big difference in my skin since starting it. I had been using it for about 5 months and have had a noticeable difference in my skin texture, wrinkles, and tone of my skin. I have very sensitive skin and it didn't irritate my skin at all, thankfully. I know there aren't really any studies on it but, I definitely saw results and would love to see literature come out on granactive retinoid.

I used Granactive Retinoid from mid-2020 until beginning of 2022. Didn’t notice any significance difference with reducing fine lines but made my skin texture feel smoother. I switched to 0.5% Retinol in Squalene and my acne scars/dark spots have lightened, made my skin smoother and reduced a bit of the forehead lines. At the end choose the products that work for your skin which requires trial and error.

I really enjoy The Ordinary's retinols. I've started with the emulsion, then I bought the retinol 1% and the grandactive 5%. I'm sure that retin-a and differin are the best way to go, but not for everyone. I'm a student, I don't have that much to repair, I have a quite healthy lifestyle (but lots of stress) and never sunbathe. I started with The Ordinary's retinols 2-3 years ago and I have to say that I have way fewer wrinkles and creepy skin than my colleagues (25 yo). I use them 3-4 nights a week because I noticed that by using them every night, my skin would start to peel around the nose and mouth. Probably in a couple of years, I'm gonna get the real retinoic acid but here in Europe, it's not that easy (I live in Italy). We don't have differin as otc and you have to go to a dermatologist (and if you don't have real acne problems, your family doctor won't send you to a derm, you have to go by yourself and it's more expensive) and hopefully, he'll give you the prescription. Then you have to come back to him every 6 months or maybe 12 in order to keep the prescription.
Probably for someone with real sun damage or someone in their 30's-40's, there's no much time to waste and try The Ordinary's retinols, but for someone in their 20's with no sun damage they're a nice step before going to the real deal.

Dr Dray is already working as a doctor and youtuber, it's very time consuming launching your own skincare line and promoting it. Plus, many people would stop watching if all she was mentioning were her products, like I stopped watching many youtubers who after launching their lines, it was all they ever used. We need reviews for other products too. Dr Dray is a dermatologist, not an expert in formulating, neither a beauty guru. She's doing fine as is and I love her for taking the time to educate us about the things she knows best.

Ordinary user with adult acne for 10 + years and live in a cold climate.
Retin A Works great but too irritating to use a good part (Sept-March) of the year.
Granactive 2% Not irritating but not effective in acne control (used for 4-5 weeks)
Granactive 5% Not irritating and very effective in controlling acne (used 6-7 months so far)
For me, effective would be defined as 0, 1, 2 pimples 0 pimples 60 % of time

The Ordinary website does not claim that the Granactive products help with acne. The product line instead promises consumers less wrinkles and texture, and more elasticity on skin. The Granactive contains HPR (benefits produced similar to that of tretinoin) as well as retinol (meant for anti-aging). Thereby, reduced acne is a side effect and not the purpose. So, you actually claim that you receive the promised benefits. It is just that the product is not meant for your problems.

I get the reliance on data (and the lack of it), but I trust my experience on this one. I’ve been using their retinoid for over a year now and it’s very good at renewing my skin. The efficacy is obviously incomparable to tretinoin because that is a purer format (and harsher for beginners), but for people with only mild-moderate issues of pigmentation and wrinkles, these products will more than do the job at a fraction of the price of what’s in the market. Deciem is a good company, and I’d back them up.

I mean fine, but I absolutely LOVE the Ordinary retinol. My skin honestly has never looked better. The fine lines I was starting to see in my forehead have all but disappeared. I don't even need to wear foundation these days. Plus their products are super cheap so not much to lose by trying it out in that case. I've since switched to the Drunk Elephant one (just to try it out for a bit), but have actually experienced more irritation with that one. Will probably switch back to ordinary unless I'm just really wowed by the DE results in a few weeks. :)

Ok, there are loads of comments here, but I’ll still write my opinion.
I’ve been using Granactive Retinoid 0,2% in Squalene over a year and it became just my No 1 product. Really. I’ve never used anything so effective as it. Less wrinkles, baby nose without pores, helps with post acne pigmentation, in general my skin is so much smoother, shinier and radiant. The product is super economic. I got started with just literally using 3 drops with my night cream and it worked wonderfully. Then I tried to apply bigger amount, but there’s no difference, so just 3 drops is enough. Not much a commercial trick if a bottle of 30 ml lasted one year.
I just got my 5% bottle and I love it even more. My skin does look better with this product. I do see drastic changes.
In the end, I’m glad that I haven’t seen this video before. Because I trust Dr Dray and I wouldn’t have purchased my first bottle in the first place. But now when I have my own experience (also I can see here loads of positive comments on Granactive Retinoid), I just don’t agree with this review.

This is really interesting. I heard that the amount that retinol can help you has to do with how well your individual cells can transform it, something to do with retinol receptors in the skin, or something like this. And this varies from person to person. Maybe this explains why I personally have been getting great results from The Ordinary. It took a year, but my skin is transformed - my sun damage is gone. I concur that the granactive retinol is a load of crap, in my experience - it did nothing. The 0.5% retinol on the other hand was another matter entirely. I just use a few drops in my moisturizer so no big deal, no flaking, just great results.
HOWEVER - your skepticism and the reasons behind it make me wonder if I might be able to get even better results with Differin. Thanks, will give it a shot.

I just started using the .5% retinol in squalane about 2 weeks ago and am already seeing since great results. Between watching Dray, Hyram, and James Welsh, over the last 6 months I have been able to really make positive changes in my routine, and was able to get rid of my cystic acne. I was still getting congestion though that was just leaving me red with small whiteheads in my upside down T zone (middle of face and jaw instead of forehead). using the ordinary retinol serum has seemingly smoothed that out for me.

But I have zero interests to buy stuff from what dr whatsoever. To be clear I never got a sun burn in my life and if I had than I would try to wear clothing that hides my skin and stay out of midday sun. I personally think wearing sunscreen and stay hours in the sun ☀️ is not the right behavior to this skin cancer topic. There is also a study about skin cancer patients are more likely to be vitamin d deficient. The way to build vitamin D is through ultraviolet b rays. It is made on our skin and vitamin D improves sunburn and helps preventing them by increasing autophagy in M2 macrophages. Also a study about this. The suns ultraviolet b rays form that active form of vitamin d. So vitamin D is a factor in preventing sunburn. Everybody should preventing sunburn as much as possible but there are other ways than just using sunscreen and than act like we can stay all day in the sun. That’s not favorable. In fact if you do see the sunrise and sunset everyday It helps you to tolerate more midday sun. Sorry if I can not be clear enough..English is not my first language. :)
