I will just put it out there, I just finished a bottle of The Ordinary's Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane and I have seen a pretty big difference in my skin since starting it. I had been using it for about 5 months and have had a noticeable difference in my skin texture, wrinkles, and tone of my skin. I have very sensitive skin and it didn't irritate my skin at all, thankfully. I know there aren't really any studies on it but, I definitely saw results and would love to see literature come out on granactive retinoid.
Hannah I’ve been using the same exact product as well, since November (5 months too) and have also seen my hyperpigmentation and fine lines pretty much gone. No irritations either.
Hannah good for you!!! i think the whole science thing is important we def need more studies but some people's legit have had drastic changes from this product and some said it helped with their cyctic acne so i think it's still valuable
Hi! I just got this and excited to try it! How often did you use it?
Just on my second weeks ..a little whitehead purging but it is totally fine for me....can't wait to see my skin improving..
I have dry skin and kinda sensitive skin - how often do you guys use it and how much do you use it??
Love the bit about lifestlye; 8 hours sleep, eating and drinking well, exercise etc. It's too easy to get caught up in skin care products but this has been a perfect reminder for me
Exactly. Lifestyle is more important. Skincare is like, well for me at least, the cherry on top to make things almost perfect.
I bought the Retinol 1% in Squalene a month ago because I got a really dark acne mark on my cheek that wasn’t fading and week 4 and it’s totally gone! My pores also look dramatically smaller on my cheeks
How do you use it and how often?
Love that stuff too! Just use it every night
Sameeee! My skin has never been better, I got rid of acne and a lot of dark spots that I had like from 10 years ago. I use it 2 times a week but it depends a lot on your skin type cause it can be really hard on sensitive skin.
JanelleandSean how often do u use it? And what products do u use other than this retinol?
I love the 1%. I got up to using every night for several months. Had smoother skin for 45. Then I stopped. Now ive placed another order. Maybe i should have just chose differin cream but i heard its similar to cosmetic grade. Regardless I hope to regain some of my losses! I enjoyed th clinical review
I’m just waiting for dr dray own skin care line
Chris Arfath I would Love for her to make her own line!!
Same
dr sam bunting did
I don't agree with that. There are already many really good products out there that do what they're supposed to do (and have taken a lot of time to get formulated by chemists). Dr Dray is already working as a doctor and youtuber, it's very time consuming launching your own skincare line and promoting it. Plus, many people would stop watching if all she was mentioning were her products, like I stopped watching many youtubers who after launching their lines, it was all they ever used. We need reviews for other products too. Dr Dray is a dermatologist, not an expert in formulating, neither a beauty guru. She's doing fine as is and I love her for taking the time to educate us about the things she knows best.
I'm so down too buy that
I use the retinol in squalane 1% solution from the ordinary since 6 months and I love it so much. The difference in my skin is huge and it never caused any irritation. It is honestly the first time in my life that I can see a before and after with a beauty product
I used Granactive Retinoid from mid-2020 until beginning of 2022. Didn’t notice any significance difference with reducing fine lines but made my skin texture feel smoother. I switched to 0.5% Retinol in Squalene and my acne scars/dark spots have lightened, made my skin smoother and reduced a bit of the forehead lines. At the end choose the products that work for your skin which requires trial and error.
How long have you used the 5%?
I started to use ordinary products about few weeks and I can really see the difference in my skin. Has improved texture and dark spots, on top of that is something affordable. I guess it works different for some people.
I was tempted to try these, except for the multiple choices, and now your no-nonsense review. Thank you, Doctor!
its so cute how she starts her videos with " well hey guys" everytime
It reminds me of "oh hi markkk"

I use a product with this ingredient on my neck (because it can't handle tretinoin). It's working surprisingly well so far (for acne).
Thank for taking the time to research these, and also give us the benefit of your research by explaining why you feel as you do about these products. I always enjoy your discussion about testing, ingredients etc. You give us the insight is invaluable. I have followed your advice about Differin (from other videos you have done) and am very pleased with it. Even my rosacea skin doesn’t have a problem with it! Your advice about sun protection reminds me of an interview I saw many years ago!!! When the dermatologist was asked what one product she would want on a desert island, her response was “the same thing I would want anywhere - sunscreen!
I use the granactive in squalane 5% and I love it, I see the difference in my skin after 2 weeks and I love it. Can’t wait to see further studies on HPR, I believe it works really well with no irritation at all to my combination/dry skin

In the UK, Differin costs £28 from Boots Pharmacy ($38). On the other hand, The Ordinary's Retinol 0.5% serum is £5 ($7). Its just simply the best budget option here.
Exactly. But she says it’s OH SO affordable… maybe for her dermatologist salary.
@@alyssagross7673 it's also affordable for ppl with subsidized healthcare
@@alyssagross7673 No, what Dr. Dray said was Differin has fact based data proving the product works and the other company doesn't. Differin is also paid for by insurance because it is a REAL FDA approved medication. There's no need to get snippy and try to have a go at Andrea on a personal level ffs chill.
I love love LOVE how honest your videos are. No hype, simple lifestyle tips, etc. Not that I do them..buuut..great advice!! 🙂💕

Dr. Dray - thank you for this! I have been agonizing over all TO stuff - if I do not have an acne issue, have dry skin and want the retinol for reversing ageing - which do you suggest between the ones you suggested here today?
It may not directly relate to this post, but wanted to thank you for your updates on Cerave. I’ve implemented it as my skin regimen and love it. Thank you for your expertise and sharing it with the public!
Love love love that you always review the research! Perfect for geeks who want this data! 😄
I am 65 years old, I have used expensive skincare, not expensive skincare, Retin A. 3 years ago I started using the ordinary, Now I have smooth flawless skin, I use the ordinary Retinol 1% in squalane 3 times a week followed by natural moisturising factors and 100% organic cold pressed Borage seed oil, The vitamin C suspension 30% in silicone 3 times a week followed by Natural moisturising factors and Borage seed oil, once a week the peeling solution, followed by natural moisturising factors and Borage seed oil, in the morning I use alpha Arbutin 2% HA, Buffet, 100% plan derived squalane , natural moisturiser factors, sunscreen, I look 15 years younger. Dr. Dray, I have been enjoying your videos especially during these troubling times. Keep it up!

Thank you for this video. I have been waiting for a review on the ordinary.
I started with granactive retinoid 2%, then moved on to retinol 0.5% in squalane. I’ve experienced positive results with both and never had irritation
I have used their retinol in squalane and no problem either but the granactive 5% was a killer for my face..
@@lindaackerman3507 the squalane killed my face and did the opposite of what the retinoid was doing to my combo skin. I was breaking out as it made my face soft and smooth 😥😥😥
@Serein Serenity what could I use with the retinol in the evenings to help my skin tolerate it? I want to start with it soon, at first only once a week.
Can I use actives (that my skin knows by now) the other evenings or is it still too much for the skin if I use retinol?
@@sobean9309 You should use retinol ONLY at night. Niacinamide works great when paired with retinol!
@@sobean9309 I put niacinamide serum from The Ordinary on damp skin (after washing my face of course) and then immediately apply CeraVe's moisturizing cream on still damp skin. I wait for the moisturizer to dry completely and apply retinol (don't put retinol on wet or damp skin). This is great since the moisturizer acts as a buffer which lessens irritation and dryness.
Hi! Im here because I was doing a little bit of a deep research of retinols because im interested to start using one as I reach the late 20’s. Im a Doctor of Pharmacy and I LOVED the way you educate people here through this platform, and also that you always mention somehow evidenced based medicine and the fact that you tried to make a friendly explanation of pharmacokinetics in this video OMG thats amazing!! The world need more healthcare providers like you!!!
this video is sooooo helpful, you really broke this down so clearly, much more than so many other youtube "dermatologists" I've seen! Thank you
Sis went in and I love it. This is what we need to hear. Skin care is so important
Thanks doc I was fluffing around with Granactive Retinoid 2% then the 5%, retinol in Squalane 0.5% and 1% till I got fed up and went straight to the doctor and got tretinoin and am loving how fast the results are.
The Ordinary has been out of Granactive 5% for 3 months so I decided to try Differin since you speak about it often and the price is reasonable. I am doing well after 1 month. I had a small amount of purging after 10 days for about a week and normal again. I plan to continue using the Differin going forward.
Dr Dray you are yet again reading my mind. Every question i have in my head, you make video with answer on the next day!!!!!! Sending love from scotland!
Keeping it real Dr Dray! Absolutely love your no bs approach!
I appreciate you and your evidence based medicine information. Changing up my whole costly skincare routine because of you
My sister and I used the same 1% retinol in squalane. I had no issues with it while she kept seeing different irritations on her skin. So I guess it varies from person to person
I'm so grateful for the content you produce. It's so helpful and useful. Thank you!
I love your passion for what you do. This is why you are the first one I go to for all my skin care questions ❤ I have dry pron and very sensitive skin and you have helped me so much ! You are the best ❤🎀
I've been using Granactive Retinoid 5% for a while now & I must say that I cannot live without it. It transformed my skin in many ways, even though I use few drops mixed with my moisturizer. It smoothed my texture, helps with breakouts, even out discoloration, minimized fine lines under my eyes. I favorite it over Tretinoin which always cause side effects & sets my skin journey back ... I also use the Retinol 1% for my body mixed with my moisturizer, I love it!
Is the granactive retinoid strong and do you use it everyday?
@@mic_derin I use the granactive retinol 2% everyday and my skin is fine with it.
Do you use it as an eyecream?
It is safe to use on the eye contour?
You May use retinol for eye area but be sure to buy a product that is specifically for that because it will have a low concentration of retinol in it. A high concentration may lead to dry eyes. Because retinol can affect the lacrimary glands in the eye. Sorry for my english.. It s not my mother tongue.
I love your clear no-nonsense explanation.
Retinols seem so confusing but you’ve reminded me to get back to the science not marketing. Thanks again Dr Dray 😊
Kate Reed I love The Ordinary products and prices....including their Retinol!
Thank you for your candor, Dr. Dray! I agree with the lifestyle changes; I've seen a difference in my skin for sure!
Thank you for the review and keeping us informed. This video was great with your explanation and break down. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for coming prepared to speak on the science. The second I heard abstract I subscribed. I think it's so gross when skincare companies make claims that have no backing and young people who don't even have wrinkles buy into it bc they have no understanding of skincare and cannot see the product work as it is for prevention at that age. Thank you for keeping us informed :)
this is exactly what I needed. THANKYOU

Hi Dr. Dray, thank you for all your hard work! Would you be able to review KLAIRS Soft Airy UV Essence SPF 50 PA ++++ sunscreen? Thanks so much and stay safe!!
Dr. Dray, thank you for the informative video!
Does this mean that the jury has come back in on whether Differin/Adapalene is good for specifically anti-aging as well as acne? I know there's been a study that showed good results, but had heard it was still uncertain (like how bakuchiol had that promising study but is still uncertain)
If Differin has now been proven to be a good anti-aging treatment, then YAY!! ☺️
I have been wondering if I should get the ordinary retinols and this video has been soooooo helpful! Thank you Dr. Dray. Its gotta be one of the most helpful videos I ever saw
Thank you for you reviews... I like how you use products from stores and keep things real! 🙏🏼🤗🧘🏻♀️🌸
Get it, girl!!! Thanks for smacking back with SCIENCE! So appreciative. What a helpful video!!!
She is a dermatologist not a cosmetic formulator or researcher. Doctors rely on researchers for their information. Her issue is lack of data and she is letting lack of data colour her view. She has changed her opinion on things in the past after more data came out however the product itself didn’t change. So she bases her opinion on amount of data, which is flawed.
A Really Bored Guy I’m so grateful for doctors who let their opinions evolve based on updated data. When we know more, we know more. ✌️

@@claras.899 If I'm not mistaken, I think that she sad, as well as dr Shereen Idriss (also a dermatologist), that niacinamide should be between 2 and 5% because there isn't a study that proves that the more % of niacinamide there is that it will be more effective. Thanks Dr Dray, for always properly educating us.
Omg thank you for the review I was asking myself this question If I should Buy it or not
Hi Dr. Dray, I enjoy your videos and I was happy to see this one of the TO granactive retinoids. I've been using it for a few weeks and real like it. I'm using the 2% in squaline. I'm glad I have started low because this one feels slightly irritating , but my skin seems to be tolerating it much better now.
My question is, I understand your thoughts on these products based on research data. But we are no longer able to buy it in Canada because the gov considers it to be too similar to tretinoin a prescription medication. We are able to buy other retinols, and we can buy the TO retinols, but the gov won't allow the sale of the granactive. So wouldn't that maybe indicate that the research might turn out to be more positive later? I d like to know your thoughts on research, vs gov testing and their different standards? Idk
What a beautiful comment
I really like the 1% retinol in squalane. I've been using it for a week now, and have honestly been so pleasantly surprised by the results. I never would've thought a topical would actually do something for my forehead wrinkles (that I've had for 4+ years), but they're already much less noticeable. I'd recommend it to anyone who can't afford the high price tags of other retinols!
How's your skin now...I started retinol 0.5 % in Squalene yesterday.
No way it helps with wrinkles in a week😂
i was waiting for this! i appreciate you giving evidentiary support for your arguments! thanks again for this vid :)
Thank you for this video! I'm so confused about all the different Retiniods on the market. Your video cleared up so much for me.
Adapalene did nothing for my skin when I was my daughter's age, and it did nothing for my daughter's skin, either! And we have two totally different skin types! Tretinoin has worked really well for both of us. I have never actually used retinol, but I have a feeling it would also be a win.
Love your videos, Dr Dray! You have completely changed my approach to skincare and product selection. I was wondering, would a dermatologist prescribe tretinoin purely for anti-aging purposes? I'm 25 and currently show no major signs of photo-aging but would like to be proactive about prevention (well, postponement). I know that tretinoin is often prescribed as treatment for acne, which I do struggle with mildly, but I would be looking to use the product mainly for its restorative effects on underlying sun damage. I don't want to waste my money on an appointment if there is reason to believe I might not get the prescription I'm looking for.
Vagary: They may. Perhaps you can ask the dermatologist’s staff that question before booking an appointment. You could also use OTC Adapalene Gel 0.1% (Brands: Differin or La Roche-Posay). Dr Dray has a great video comparing the 2 brands and also talks about the latest studies on Adapalene’ s anti-aging benefits. 👏 😊
After watching your Retinoid video I have been using the Neutrogena SR non fragrance cream for 5 months, I’m loving it, 64 and my fine lines are way less visible and skin well hydrated. Thank you.

I use The Ordinary products since October 2017. Niacinamide+zinc, vit c + hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid, salicilic acid, granactiv retinoid 2% and now 5%. All of them worked well for my skin. I’ve no more spots or enlarged pores, no lines or wrinkles and soft and luminous skin. I’m 36 yo with no sensitive, mix to oily skin.

Thank you, Doc! You worked hard to learn the science--I love it that you share it with us. I am using CeraVe "Resurfacing Retinol Serum" after hearing your review. I WAS using prescriptive Retin A or Tretinoin for decades and, unlike them, the CeraVE, comparatively, causes me little irritation and virtually no peeling/flaking. It is a GREAT improvement! I also appreciate you straight, commonsense approach.
I LOVE the Cerave retinol serums. I really have found that sunscreen makes the biggest difference though. Since I’ve started wearing it religiously, I’ve noticed the biggest change in my skin

Ordinary user with adult acne for 10 + years and live in a cold climate.
Retin A Works great but too irritating to use a good part (Sept-March) of the year.
Granactive 2% Not irritating but not effective in acne control (used for 4-5 weeks)
Granactive 5% Not irritating and very effective in controlling acne (used 6-7 months so far)
For me, effective would be defined as 0, 1, 2 pimples 0 pimples 60 % of time
I used other retinol serums previously and had decent results with minor irritation
I hope this helps and thanks for all the cool content!
retinoil is normally used to reverse damage the ordinary is based on reversing damage
Have you seen anti-aging benefits with the granactive 5%?
Georgie I’ve been using 2% and have seen a huge change in fine lines. For me it’s very effective. I’m sad Ulta no longer carries it in 2%. I ran out and switched to revolution skin care. I don’t like it near as well was The Ordinary.
The Ordinary website does not claim that the Granactive products help with acne. The product line instead promises consumers less wrinkles and texture, and more elasticity on skin. The Granactive contains HPR (benefits produced similar to that of tretinoin) as well as retinol (meant for anti-aging). Thereby, reduced acne is a side effect and not the purpose. So, you actually claim that you receive the promised benefits. It is just that the product is not meant for your problems.
mark tr I have had the same experience. I started with deep cystic hormonal acne and tried the 2%. It cleared my skin but I still got acne here and there. After a few months I moved onto the 5% and now I do not have any acne at all! Now working on clearing up dark spots.
Please let me know your thoughts on REFISSA Cream? Thanks, Dr. Dray, you’re informative and thoughtful videos are exceptional!
Hi Dr. Dray! Love your videos. I would love to start tretinoin since it seems to be the gold standard in anti aging skin care. Would a dermatologist typically be willing to prescribe this, even if I do not have any current skin issues? I have set up an appointment with a dermatologist to discuss it, but I wondered if it would be easily prescribed for someone wanting to use it preventively? Thank you very much!

@tendreheart hey it has been 9 days since I have been applying the ordinary granactive retinoid emulsion 2 percent. My skin has turned a bit darker in cheek and forehead area. I use 3 drops on face every night. Did you experience your skin turning dark too? Prior to starting this, I had glowing, problem free skin without wrinkles or anything. But suddenly the glow is gone and skin has turned a bit darker
Is it problematic to use different retinoids on different days? I‘d like to try the HPR but am already using Retinol once a week, what do you think?
You can alternate with other retinols as long as you don't use chemical exfoliants or similar products at the same time.
