Impression of the Portuguese: Part 1

- I've been living in Portugal for 5 months now, and I think it's time to let you know about some initial impressions I have of the people and the culture.PLEASE consider stopping by my funding page to help me continue my education! www.generosity.com/education-...
The sidewalk thing... I'm Portuguese, from the Azores and my mother taught me that, if you are a man or younger person you keep yourself in the road side of the sidewalk. If you cross ways with a child, a woman or an older person, you step aside and let them walk in the inner side of the sidewalk. It's seen as an act of kindness, protection and respect for others.
This is what I was taught. Do not know if it was just my mother's 'rule' or not, but it's my experience.
Welcome to Portugal! Hope you have a great time
See? There IS a rule!
É verdade sim senhor amigo! Sou de São Miguel e realmente temos esse hábito, senhoras, meninas, crianças e idosos deixamos passar pelo lado de dentro como forma de respeito e proteção!
I moved here 3 weeks ago and I moved from an Airbnb to another place. The address was incomplete. No house number and the Uber drive was waiting for me and 3 other people stopped and helped me finding the place and with my 3 suitcases. I was stunned
I really appreciate your comments on Portugugal! I'm Spanish, but I love Portugal and the Portuguese. I'm not very good in lenguages, but in that wonderful country it doesn't matter! as soon as people learn that you're from Spain, they really go out of their way to speak in Spanish, so the "Conversa", (chatting) will become a joyous mixed language, which is called both in Portugal and Spain, "el Portuñol" (half Portuguse, half Spanish)-
I go to Portugal as much as I can and for sure I agree with your opinions on this wonderful country with its most loving people.
My personal opinion: Portuguese are with the Greeks the most welcoming people in Europe.
Coffee is to Portuguese as important as to Italians (It's serious business)
It is! :) Thank you for the nice comment.
I never talked to Greeks in person, but from what I saw online, Greeks seem nice and funny people, some shared the love of. Dark humor :)
I agree. Hugs from Portugal
Will Neverforgets thank you, welcome!
Lollll I was drinking an expresso when I started to see this vlog
🤣
You are right about the loving and caring and friendly nature of the Portuguese. What a nice people they are!
*NO!*
*WRONG!! RACISTS AND XENOPHOBES BEYOND ANYTHING EVER SEEN. THIS GUY MUST BE IN A PARALLEL UNIVERSE LOL!*
@@josepontesferreira6243 Are you okay?
Before i lived in London for 4 years now iam in Portugal is my favorite country in the world!
Hugo VEVO® I'm in London now, it's nice but I'm stuck in the rat race here. Get me out!
I’m proud to be Portuguese!!! 🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹
lol, I'm not... Why are you proud?
Lazurus better than not knowing what you are. Portuguese born Indian who lived in the uk for most of his life.
You can be happy or glad to be Portuguese. OK. Now, to be proud of something you haven't achieved on your own, is kind of nonsense. Being born as a Portuguese or German or English... is no feat. And that's why the Portuguese president or other Portuguese upper class people would rather invite an upper class person from an other country for tea than an ordinary compatriot.
Well yes...
What are Portugals's 5 most modern cities ?
Great post Keith! Keep 'em coming!
Hi there, we've been enjoying watching this. It's so good to discover how we can share and learn so much from each other through channels such as yours. Look forward to more from you.
Tank you man! We love ur channel! HUGE HUG from Portugal! :D
I'm glad you're having a good experience! I'm from Braga myself but have been living in the UK for 3 years now (studying here)
Best wishes,
Miguel
I'm from Braga!! It's good to know that you're having a positive experience with portuguese people :)
I have to say that I normally find it hard to watch a video of someone just talking but I found myself actually staying for this one (its not because I'm Portuguese ;D) Interesting and entertaining video! Thank you!
It really fills my heart with joy to see a foreigner enjoy my city and my country as much as you do man. We Portuguese can be a bit negative when it comes to our country and we take a lot of things we have for granted. Hope you enjoy the remainder of your time here !
So very cool! The flowers and rain shots were so good! Makes me want to be there in person! Can we see more realistic "what you see when you walk around the city" shots?
He didn't even show you the coolest places in Braga!
No offence taken buddy. As a portuguese I am very happy and glad you are enjoying our beautiful country. May the rest of your stay be just as awesome and keep them videos coming :D
:) glad you enjoy Portugal! Hope you have great time here and thank you for making a video about it :D subs
Glad you're enjoying your stay :)) Portugal rocks hehe
Thanks! Glad you have such a good experience there. I am planning to move from the US - probably to Coimbra district - early next year. On a modest budget and with, hopefully, three cats. This will be, hopefully, a permanent move.
Wow I like the place wish I come visit there and thanks for your vedio watching dumaguete Philippines
Good luck man!
Thank you for show our litlle tresaure.
I was in Lagos, Portugal October 2019, and I agree totally about how wonderful the Portuguese people are! Yes,yes, the coffee and the bread!
Come in north 😉 real portugal
Ofcourse we walk on whatever side we fancy! 😁😁😁
Thanks for you nice comments about portugal! Im portuguese, and y really love to wellcome foreign people .
The rule about the sidewalk is: the person facing the cars goes on the outside of the sidewalk, whether it's on the right or on the left doesn't really matter. Great video by the way! I'm very glad you enjoyed my contry! :D
BRAGA
As rule for a person on foot i was always told to walk against the direction of the cars so you can see them comming.
As a born and raised Portuguese you are bang on on your interpretation 😂😂
Thank you, Vera!
Welcome to Portugal 🇵🇹 ❤️
I really enjoyed this! I'm a retiree about to take the plunge to move to Portugal and some days I get cold feet. You helped me relax and get excited about it again. Like you, I like having espresso everywhere; unlike you, I don't need bloody mary's in the daytime. So I hope you open that bar! As for racism, my impression from Brazilian and other Euro friends is that only Americans are so uptight about it. They live in a very naturally diverse culture and it is mostly live and let live. I'm not saying there are no problems, just that they aren't neurotic about identity like we Americans are.
I like the Portuguese bread very much. but the Queijo da Serra it's what I really love and the coffee even more (I used to have almost 20 double espressos/day)
Snack-Bar has been shorten to Bar (so it's not like a Pub).
You wanna get drunk any time of day in Portugal? - You can!
Anyone/anywhere will serve you alcohol (gas station, barber, restaurant or café)…
Otherwise go to a Cervejaria (beer garden) that sells mostly beer, or a Tasca (wine house) that sells mostly cheap wine, either one, nowadays you can also have snacks - Portuguese style of course! :)
oh, in Lisbon you can drink Ginja (Cherry like) at Casa da Ginja (mostly cherry and firewater or Aguardente)
Ginja in lisbon? Go to Óbidos for Ginja!
ginja in lisbon is a bit weaker than it is in the north specialy obidos where its from... queijo da serra? one of the best godamn cheeses on the planet wining multiple awards xD portoguese coffee? im there with yah mate its amazing xD "vinho do porto" or porto wine was the first ever mass produced and sold wine on the planet and one of the best on the entire world!- also ever tried melting serra da estrela... on the bread! its heaven xD
Just to say that although there is no rule to walk on the sideways, it would be courtesy to walk on the side of the road if you are walking opposing to incoming vehicle traffic and the people walking with their backs to traffic to walk on the inside of the sideway. But yeah, no rule in general.
I am living in Setubal now. Very nice!
Thank for your vídeo
Hey, Keith! Is there going to be a "Part 2"?
It's not a bar, it's maybe a pastelaria(pastry shop) or padaria(bread shop). Still, absolutely agree with you ;).
Yeah, you may not be able to get a Bloody Mary til early evening. But every cafe/bar that offers espresso will always have Macieira,1920(brandy), beer, aguardente(fire water) Port wines, vodka, and a few bottles of whiskey on the shelf to compliment your espresso and pastry. This is also true even at highways(Auto Estrada) fuel and rest areas. How convenient =-)
you are so intelligent. thanks.
I'm from Lisbon but I can say, in the north of Portugal things are cheaper, and I do t find anything offensive, cool video bro. Even being from. Lisbon I loved that you go to A Unconventional destination.
Thats great....sounds special
Hi. Thxs for video sir
I absolutely lived it! I am portuguese from Porto! Mate you need to do a video in my beautiful city!!!! Loved your video LOL
Keith thankyou for your truly comments.
You are for sure welcomed by Potugueses any time.
Cheers
What, there are no bars? You can have spirits from dawn to dusk in any café. Sure, there are only few to no stylish cocktailbars open on daytime, but you can also go to a hotel for such a drink or to some place in a tourist area or at a beach promenade.
Have fun!
Hey man nice videos are you still living in Porto\portugal ?
Visit Madeira as well. It’s amazing am from there 🤭
Cheers for promoting the North. Best wishes from Porto
I think he is talking about portuguese people in general. its not just people in north are special
@@fullstackpedro I tell you, in the capital, Lisboa, people are way more arrogant! I live in Lisbon and is really crappy comparing to smaller cities like Braga , even Porto!!
ok and... what you expect? a red carpet? its the capital city, people are busier
@@fullstackpedro Yes but he is in Braga (North of Portugal)
"Don't take offense" pls, we Portuguese don't get offended easily hahaha
unless they come to us and say "hola que tál" or any other spanish greeting... than you better run xD
Lololol No rule for walking on the side of a street!
I would also mention it in a video if I would go to a country where there a was such rule.I had no idea😄😂😂 Cultural stuff I guess 😀
Great video, great sense of humor. wellcome to Braga 😊
Thank you!! Yes, we are taught in the states in school to walk on the right side of the hallways, so I suppose that carries over into walking on the sidewalk. If you go to NYC and you walk on the left side of the stairs, people will look at you and not be nice.
there's a lot more foot traffic in new york then any major city in Portugal, so you would need that type of a rule to ensure some sort of order .... not to relevant to portugal. Amazing video!
@@keeferportabella in the azores I usually walk on the right when crossing other men. When crossing women or children I'll take the closest side to the road and give then the inner side, away from traffic. On narrow side walks I'll move to the road and let them have it. That's what I was taught growing up.
god bless you
Hey, let me know if you ever come to lisbon and decide to cross the river, i'll show you around hehe
Amazing 😉
We are Portuguese, we interact!
Portugal, Braga (my college too👏👏👏)
you should go to paul de arzila its a natural reserve were the animals are portected there are a lot of diferent trees more than 130 species of animals
Bracara Augusta
Yes. In school and colleges we call them bars. But outside those places, a bar is a bar, a coffee shop is a café. 🤗
Keith, you're so funny!
Welcome!
what is the job market like ? how is it to move there and get work ? what is the social and legal system like ? what about going to university at 40something? are you still there?
I am from Portugal😃🇵🇹
Share out from portugal!!!!
Hey!!! You are ok!👍😀
Thank you so much now i feel proud to be portuguese :D
lmao as blinks estão em todo o lado 😂😂
Keith I live in Vila Praia de Ancora.. If you are in the Area would enjoy meeting up.
Yes Portugal is lovely city and Prague too!!!!
Portugal is a country not a city like Prague!
Yes, this is Portugal and much more.
Where you are from ?
that black toy making pub is not racist at all..
Here in Portugal we don't have as many bars as in the UK or in America, but you can drink alcool almost anywhere in public places, wich you may have already figured out by now, thanks for coming to Portugal and enjoy your stay!
Ps: Lisbon may not be cheaper but is way better than Braga!
´Lisbon is Lisbon, Braga is Braga, both are great cities
Kalecimus We have many bars!
In portugal we have 2 type of bars that we call bar cafe for the day wich we can drink coffee, beer, eat, and the pubs for the night, in uk they have bars open since mourning but they look all the same, white horse, black wagon must of them with similar names, they all look the same, no difference!
In portugal the bars they all look different!
I'm Portuguese first of all, im not saying we don't have Bars in Portugal, what im saying it's something entirely different, the number of bars we have in Portugal in any given town or city pales in comparison to what they would have in the UK, have you been to the UK by the way? Yes we do have many Bars in Portugal too, i'm aware of it, I think what causes some confusion between us is the fact that the English sell the idea of a bar while we sell the idea of coffee shop, for an instance in the UK they would say Bar restaurant, while in Portugal we would say Café Bar, for the English "Bar" comes first while for Us Café is the key word, noticed the difference?
Have you been to Algarve? xD
The Algarve it's awesome too, but then the Algarve it's England!!! Just go to Albufeira and you'd think you're in the UK, Germany or France anything but not Portugal!
A cool place and a cool video, btw those cafes also sell alcohol and are open all day.
ahahha i feel really proud to be Portuguese!
😂 Who needs a rule to walk on the sidewalk! 😆 We are uncomplicated people!
my hometown.
Awesome review 😂.
The kind of bar you want is a "tasca" or "tasco". It's opened during the day, men just go there to have drinks and stare at football, speak about football, fight about football :D
ah ah ah ...goood!
you're funny ! seriously ! :)
Are you working there mate? That's when things go sour.
indeed... we work more on average than in any european country so get ready for some seriously unfair work time
Hm I'm pretty sure they treat well some foreigners with kindness but to their own people quite the opposite also to foreigners depends if there is something in it for them is my guess but how do you go to a country or move there with little money no job ? I don't get it where do you go where do sleep eat or even allowed to go there I hear it's tough to get into that country
In Portugal women, children and old persons are the 1st to go and they walk close to the walls.
You can have a complete meal (bread, olives, main course, soup, salad, desert, coffee a shot of whisky ) for 10 euros.... Expresso is coffee, latte cappucino etc not for us
I used to love the place I immigrated to in the first year or so, I was obsessed and used to compare and find only positive things, years later, then was very annoyed, missed home. Now I kind of see things clear, 14 years abroad. Still love and hate relationship, but won’t go back.
I found your video while searching about early retirement. What makes me „fear“ Portugal a bit is that they don’t like Brazilians- I can’t say if it is a rumor, but because of colonization it could make sense.
is is definitely a rumor portuguese and brazilians get along just fine and dont really hate each other... obviouly you will have the rotten apple on either side but... you know how it is stupid people will be stupid. however! do keep in mind that this problem is a lot more common on the southern parts of the country since the north is a lot warmer and more accepting. give it a try and see how it goes :)
Not true, a bar isn't the same thing as a caffé. In Portugal, a bar is a place that is more active during the night and specialises in alcoholic drinks. But most of the bars also work as caffés, especially in small towns, and have the same things available that a caffé has. One big difference between caffés and bars: here caffés have some small cakes and pastry most of the times, but bars, generally, don't have any cakes or pastry available. I can create a bar-caffé-pastry shop spectrum appliable to Portugal: bar; bar-caffé; caffé; caffé-pastry shop; pastry shop. Most caffés here are either bar-caffé or caffé-pastry shop.
Rafa PT What is awesome is that you are 100% wrong. I’ve been here for 3 years now and this statement is still true.
@@keeferportabella Well, I've been in Portugal for 17 years 😂. Maybe where you're staying it's different
Exatamente, muito bem explicado
Keith he is right
Does your landlord have any more apartments for rent? :)
Your video inspired me to consider Portugal!
I am from Braga
this is us, the
best.
What’s the name of this place ? Praga ? It’s in Portugal
Its called Braga
I agree with you..Portuguese usually are very hospitable people..a d they go out of their ways..if they have a visitor and if they do not have food on the fridge, they go to the neighbour's and borrow to make you welcome..I live in the UK for 36 years and in the same street for 23 years and my neighbour's never open the front door to me except my next door neighbour's but even so is the usually Cup of Tea..maybe a biscuit and that's it ..
I presume and is the way they say ..is our culture ..🤔
It's expensive in Lisbon now. Not at all cheap - electricity bills in Portugal are some of the most expensive in Europe. So not quite true
Americans: It's not even coffee, it's espresso!
Europeans: what the hell is coffee then? 😄
Bom video em braga sobretudo sobre o Minho..na minha opinião deverias era falar sobre a liberdade que estas a viver, e passa pela (taberna belga)...
💓
.... I LOVE PORTUGAL !
We just like new people
I don't drink coffee and I don't smoke actually :)
Actually Elsa, you are a dumb a... What a stupid post!
4:07 not racist at all, thats just your "american mentality" speaking ;) i hope you enjoyed our country, peace!
When in Portugal, follow the rules for a happy visit, but the Portuguese are very tolerant and welcome foreign folks with warmth.
Thank you Keith, we are not THAT good. and yore welcome in Vila do Conde
I was surprised to see Braga xD I live there cause I also study at UM. Minho is my favorite region of the country, but there are a lot of cities prettier than Braga, there's too many ugly buildings... and road. Not many green spaces... I hope you have an opurtunity to see more of the country... and go to Leiria ;)
