    What you said about the lesson plans are so true! I'm a senior in college right now and our lesson plans are so long and drawn out! and I just keep thinking I would never use this or have time to write this in a real classroom setting or on a daily basis.

    Can you do a video on wardrobe for new teachers? Maybe show some outfits.
    Also a video checklist on what first year teachers should buy?
    I start my first year in August. 1st grade! :)

    My son's teacher last year used the Daily Five, he was already above grade level, but took off last year in his reading. I teach Jr. High, but still enjoy your videos, I am going to replicate your sub plans, thank you!

    Where were you my first year! Even though I'm a high school teacher, everything you said about the school building issues were spot on stuff that other teachers have taught me or I had to learn the hard way. Great video! Can you do a video on how to design a classroom?

      Acinomnieves3 Thanks for the positive feedback. I am planning on doing a "How To Decorate Your Classroom" video in late August, when I finally have access to my classroom again.

    I plan to change careers and get in to teaching next year. Since I don't come from an education background, I haven't had any kind of practicum or student teaching, so I am learning as much as possible from experienced teachers like you. Your honesty and practicality are invaluable!

    I am so glad I found your channel. I have not found a lot of teacher youtube channels. Thank you for making this video. I student teach Aug. 19th and then its off to work either subbing or maybe a teacher position *fingers crossed*. This video gave me alot of information and I am going to watch the rest of your videos now. The part on lessons plans in college hit home with me. I write 2 to 3 pages for my college professor and I find it crazy. I subscribed and thank you for sharing this advice.

    Thank you so much for taking the time to post this video! I will be student teaching in August and graduating in December. All these bits of advice are gold that you don't get to learn in the classroom. You're a wonderful teacher!

    PS: I am in the Metro Detroit area, too. :-)

    I am a fourth grade teacher and this will be my second year. I must say your advice was very helpful and I wish i heard it sooner. I was very overwhelmed my first year and hearing your thoughts and advice has really enabled me to understand that I was not the only one. I have several questions for you. How would you organize or prepare your first week of school. what are you great or successful behavior management plan?

    • @tinabietler
      @tinabietler  9 років тому +1

      Rachel Delisca My first week of school really resembles the First Week plan laid out in the Daily 5/Cafe Book. I believe in laying down your structure and going slow until the routine is ingrained. As for my behavior routine, I linked that in the video above.

    This video was extremely helpful. I am preparing for my first year of teaching in 8th grade math. My initial license is in French K-12, so I have a lot of anxiety as far as transferring the theories I learned in my teacher education classes for foreign language into a math classroom; however, your advice (especially for lesson plans) have made me feel more confident. Thank you for posting!

    This was so accurate and helpful I am so grateful you are opening up for us novice teachers! I am in my internship and have been searching the internet for the last 6 months finding advice anywhere I can. I HAVE A QUESTION. I hope you see this! --> How can new teachers do all they can to NOT GET SICK? What are your stay HEALTHY SECRETS? I have heard of grape juice when the stomach bug is going around, and neosporin dabs in the nose with a Q-tip, of course vitamins and sleep, etc. etc. ????

    Thank you for this video. I have just ordered The Daily Five and The Cafe and am looking forward to reading both. I teach high school ESOL students who have interrupted education, and have encountered the problems you mentioned regarding balanced literacy, so I am very interested in this new approach.

    Hi Tina! Thanks for sharing your advice! I am a preservice teacher studying Early Childhood, and I will graduate in 2 years with my Masters. I have watched and found this, and many more of your videos very helpful! Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to vlog! I heard in your classrom set up video from this year that you're teaching 4th grade. Have you always taught 4th?

    Hi Tina. Could you do a video going a little more in depth about lesson plans? I'm having a hard time finding the balance between writing "pages _ & _" vs. a full blown lesson plan, which I know as a new teacher next year is going to be completely unrealistic. But as someone starting off new learning a new curriculum, how in depth should my "short hand" go? I need your help!! Your videos are amazing and you are a huge inspiration!

    Great tips. However the tip around 9:30 "Giving your phone to a student to call home on mis behavior " DONT DO. I learned that lesson two years ago when a student broke my phone on purpose. When I tried to get the parent to pay for it, they said it was my fault for lending the phone. After thinking about it, yes it was. I should have used the school phone. So lesson learned.... use the school phone!

    Hi Tina, I was wondering what your thoughts are on the use of Daily 5 and Cafe for ESL students. I am a first year private school, kindergarten teacher in Costa Rica. There isn't a structured curriculum for the kindergarten class, so I can be as creative as I like. What do you suggest when it comes to these this method (Daily 5/Cafe)? Thanks in advance!

    • @tinabietler
      @tinabietler  9 років тому +1

      +Jessica Lynne Ryland Hi, for Kindergarten I think you need to wait til the middle of the year to begin Daily 5. Little Kinders I think need to have carpet time, big books read aloud, chart lessons, shared reading, etc. To just give them little books they can't read yet, since most kinders aren't reading yet, is less effective. Once they have some sight words and an understanding of text structures then move into Daily 5.

    I have been teaching for eleven years and then I took a one year break to stay with my new born. Now I'm going back to school. In a different school. My biggest problem is how to transform an ugly, old classroom into one pleasant for the eyes. Any advice?

    • @tinabietler
      @tinabietler  9 років тому

      Marie-Louise De Kort Once my classroom was in the basement. No windows, track lighting, battle ship painted floor. My heart sunk, but then I got to work!
      Butcher paper and pretty trim is going to be your best friend. Pick one color for the butcher paper and use it throughout. Then change up your trims. The best tape in the world is 3M clear packing tape. That stuff sticks to anything. Even if you don't have cork boards or a designated bulletin board you can just hang paper and use trim ANYWHERE using the 3M packing tape.
      Go to Loews or Home Depot and buy a large rug from the remnants and lay it down to cover a hideous floor. Stick with neutral colors so you can change your decor without buying a new rug.
      Also, check out this website:
      www.schoolgirlstyle.com/category/classroom-photos/
      She creates and sells the most beautiful designer classrooms. Even if you don't purchase any of her products I find she is great for getting inspiration. My own classroom is based on her Rainbow Chalk Board theme and I love it.

      thank you! I can use any inspiration! I live in Curacao, no home depot here... :). But I have shopped plenty times in the States. Wish we had so many choices here. I was shocked when I saw the classroom, the thing is for eleven years I worked at one of the best schools on the island...
      Once again thank you. Maybe I can send you some before and after pictures when I'm done.
