I never new the fullbore was hated. It's my favorite metal distortion of all time. I've been using one for more than 10 years easily. I absolutely love it. I've tried many pedals over the years and never found one that I would replace it with.
Neither sounded particularly awful to me and I don't put much weight into the internet's opinions on gear because let's be real most online are at most bedroom guitarists
Yeah agree. Not to mention kids or young fellas who learned guitar just few years ago and don't know or bother to tweak the knobs on their distortion pedal. What the hell. Hahaa. I've been using the MXR Fullbore Metal for years with my death Metal band and it sounds great regardless of what guitars or amps I use with. And so this pedal stays on my pedalboard.
I've played the Fullbore and MT-2 before and they both sound lovely. I don't know why there are so many bad reviews for both, my guess has always been that people play it for 15 seconds without messing with the EQ at all, call it a piece of shit, and rant about it online. Either that or they play the pedal over an already distorted channel. Of course, there are people who just don't like the sound, and I get that when adjusted incorrectly, it sounds horrible, but you could probably say that about most pedals. My only gripes would be that the Fullbore has a slightly too scooped tone by default, but I believe you can remedy that for the most part by turning up the mids and rolling back a tad on the lows, and that the MT 2 has a bit less gain than some might want, but still plenty
I know what you mean. I run my fullbore through a behringer gdi21 and I can get it to sound awesome. And people think my sound great! Until they find out I use a fullbore and they start ranting and telling me to get a better pedal. Lol! If I did that, then I wouldnt sound the same. Who cares what other people think. I love how it sounds and I know they like it too. Just dont tell them how you got your sound. Lol!
Great comparison. Thank you for the tech! The Eq analysis is very helpful. Personally, I am a fan of the MXR Fullbore once you know how to tame it.....but...to each his own.
Owning both pedals, I say that as heard on this video, the Metal Zone has a better quality sound. The Fullbore Metal sounds rawer/noisier, but has a wider range of sounds. As for why these pedals are 'hated'... it is mainly the Metal Zone I hear about, and I find it is often the first pedal bought by beginners who do not know how to dial in good tones. They max the gain/low/high dials and scoop the mids, resulting in a bad sound, and unfairly write it off as a 'bad' pedal. Truth is, it set standards for an affordable good quality metal distortion pedal that other companies copied, and I've yet to hear another pedal in its price range that beats it.
George Saris I remember buying the metal zone and the first thing I did was crank the gain...then I wondered why I couldn’t get a sound that was satisfying...I’ve come to learn that if I bring the volume up on my amp first then fix my eq’s then add the gain slowly...I can enjoy the noise coming out of my amp ...even on my hm2 clone...I don’t always have the gain maxed...sacrilegious I know
@@dddd717 Yeah, when I first got a Metal Zone, I did exactly what I described above, except I kept the Mid / Mid Freq dials at 12 o' clock, everything else maxed HM-2 style. Didnt' sound bad for then, although over the top. I soon learned I didn't need to max out almost everything (its not the HM-2/Swedish Death Metal after all) The Metal Zone has a very wide gain / EQ range, so too much of anything will not sound good.
Here's how I justified the fullbore over the mz.. i don't use cab loops. If i did the mz would have won but im a straight in on clean kinda guy.. and i also understand how to use a eq to tame the beast. For me it was about total destruction, earth smashing, concrete slabbing, ball crushing rhythms.. and for that.. the fullbore wins and has some left over to share. Ppl act like both pedals are a insult to thier very existance.. those folks just dont understand why these 2 exist.. it's not for them and thats ok.. but you dont see me laying crap all over farty fuzz lovers that sound like a dying diode. Cheers.
Im lucky. I have a friend who is an amp tech and electronics wizard. He opened up my Fullbore and customized the circuitry by lowering the gain, really boosting the mid so the scoop function is great now. Also gave it more bottom. My mt2 was sacrificed to the metal gods a long time ago. But i love the ds1 paired with a ts808. Rock on.
Look if the metal zone was so bad then why is it bosses second most sold pedal after the DS-1 the numbers speak for themselves. It’s a great pedal if you know how to use it. Great video as usual by the way 🤘🤘
it's the second most sold pedal because of it's name and brand. beginner guitarists pick it up when they haven't quite developed the ear for a good tone and don't know where or what to look for. you head to a guitar store and this pedal is ALWAYS on the shelves somewhere where you can find it. if i had been better educated on pedals and tone back when i went looking for my first pedal, i 100% would have not purchased the metal zone. i would've gone for something that i can boost a distorted signal with, like a tubescreamer, or a blues driver.
I can rate what is better, maybe I could have back in time and voted that BULLFORE is winner! But sometimes MT-2 is fun and quick trash metal and BULLFORE cannot. But to be used with another effect, they are GEMs.
Funny, I own a Fullbore as well and find the mid control more aggressive, it almost goes into self oscillation when you move the Mid Freq up. Fullbore to me sounds more modern.
Nice buzzsaws!! 🤘😉 I quite like both pedals! But if I had to choose, then I pick the Fullbore Metal. Why? Because gain! 😂 I never tried putting them against eachother, instead they get used very differently. The MT-2 is used primarily as a preamp and the M116 primarily as a buzzsaw or as Pantera in a box. 😂 It just takes a little knob twisting before you get a decent sound from them, that’s all. Most of the time the RTFM part is left out by people. 🤷♂️
Good to know I inadvertently bought the two hated pedals (Ds-1 and full bore) today on a recommendation, hopefully that means I'll end up with a unique sound for a minute before everyone changes their minds and embraces them lime thry so with bad music
Nice review. Will the mt-2 give best low end heavy distortion like pantera, cannibal corpse kinda on the mesa mini rectifier on the fx loop on all channels for bedroom volumes and on lower wattages?
I have a Metal Zone that I started modding years ago now. It was my gateway to building and modding pedals like I do now. Anyways, a couple of days ago I decided to return it to stock. I ran it into the front of my Orange OR15 and was surprised at how good it sounded. Turns out it works well with some amps.
The Fullbore Metal is like Pantera and early Metallica in a box if you know what to do with it. Keep your gain fairly low, roughly around like 8 or 9 o'clock, frequency around 9-10, crank the high knob, mids around noonish or a little higher, low knob a little lower than noon, and do not turn on that scoop switch. Most importantly, run it into your FX loop, not your input, so that the signal goes into the speaker and not the amp, and keep the amp on clean. I run it with an ENGL Fireball 25 with the ENGL vintage style 1x12 speaker, though the amp itself doesn't matter much in this case. Pretty godly classic 80's thrash tone that works best on its own, especially with some nice hot pickups.
I like them both a lot. I find if you eq them right. They sound awesome. I do think the metal zone is the winner though. Simply because the scoop and noise gate switches are kind of useless on the fullbore.
I’ve tried both (not extensively, but I’ve trued them) and the fullbore plays really well with my amp. I did try the metalzone in the effects loop and it sounds great on other demos I’ve heard when used like that but it still sounded pretty fizzy. My amp is a mess boogie dc-5, and the gain channel by itself sounds amazing but it just isn’t aggressive enough, especially for higher tunings like e or d standard. The fullbore gave me the push I need. Gain on the amp should only be at 5/6 and same for on the pedal. I have the mids cranked in the amp, and on the fullbore I like to turn the scoop on and crank the mids on top of that. I think it’s a great pedal if you’re using it right.
Hey dude, I like your videos, you should consider reviewing the Hardwire TL2 pedal. Discontinued, going up in value. Very underrated pedal, with really great sounds and great build quality. I have one, it's a Metalzone for adults. Lol you probably already know about it though, who am I kidding.
i honestly think MXR fullbore metal has a lot more potential to sound good, and gets mostly bad rep from the fact that people refer to it as "basically another metal zone". the boss metal zone was the first pedal i ever bought (sadly), and i can easily say that i would have much preferred the mxr fullbore over the boss, because of the in built noise gate and tone versatility. metal zone has WAY too much noise and sounds like a can of bees 90% of the time. in my ears, the difference is just a night and day.
nevermind, the more i listen to them both being played, the more i start to realize that they both just outright suck. mt2 still sounds like a noisy can of bees, and fullbore sounds like it's lacking mids no matter if you turn the mid knob all the way up.
Fullbore Metal is the only metal distortion I'm aware of that makes the MT2 sound awesome. They basically took everything wrong with the MT2's hyper sensitive EQ controls, and married it to a really awful, harsh, fuzzy clipping stage and called it a day. I'm biased though, I've never come across an MXR dirtbox I liked, and tbh metal pedals aren't what MXR is known for anyway. MT2 on the other hand doesn't actually deserve it's infamy, it just has way too much range, so you can get a million horrible sounds and a handful of good ones that only people with good ears and a decent helping of knowledge seem to be able to get out of it.
Please compare maxon od808, ibanez ts808, ts9 and ts7 , they are claim their have same circuit. By the way Your comparison method is comprehensive, really helpfully, thank
Maxon OD808 and Ibanez TS808 sound similar. They're both based on the old Ibanez TS808. These TS808 type pedals have the lowest gain among all Tube Screamer variants. These TS808 style pedals are also the warmest sounding among all Tube Screamer variants. Their tones are richer in low mids than other Tube Screamer variants, this lends them a smoother tone than other Tube Screamer pedals. The TS9 is more or less same as the TS808 but its output section is different. Due to its different output section it sounds brighter than the TS808. Its tone also has comparatively more upper mids and lesser low mids than the TS808 style pedals. If you want to use the Tube Screamer purely as a mid boost before an overdriven amp so as to have a tight low end response at high gain then the TS9 works better than the TS808 style pedals. As for the TS7. That damned thing is the brightest sounding variant of Tube Screamer. It even brighter than the much hated Ibanez TS10. With the hot switch on it functions more like a distortion pedal. I absolutely hate that pedal. It's too much of a one trick pony. It thins out the guitar tone way too much. When you boost amps with that pedal it drastically cuts the low end and boosts highs and upper mids to plain ridiculous levels. Of course it instantly lends you that thin and bright tone of late 80's and early 90's style Hair Metal bands, but I find it utterly useless.
Neither one sounds bad (unless you do something stupid with their settings haha). They’re just two different sounds. Boss sounds like melodic metal or metal core. The Mxr sounds best for full on death metal
Those pedals are awsome they dont deserve the hate. Everyone knows how to use a metal zone. The Fullbore Metal sounds awsome to into a clean Orange amp. I have it in front of my tiny terror. I'll sell my tiny terror and get a terror stamp because I still want that sound because it doesnt sound as good in front of my new blackstar ht club 40 (not mk2).
Neither of them sounded that good but if I need to choose I'll say the Metal Zone is more usable. I accidentally found a weird use of the Metal Zone, to be more specific I used a ModTone Extreme Metal pedal which is a modified Metal Zone clone but I think it'll work for Metal Zone too. If you dime up all the knobs on a HiWatt DR103 and then boost the normal channel with a Metal Zone (with the distortion knob all the way down) you can get a huge but tight sounding 80's metal tone out of that amp. The DR103 is ridiculously loud though. All I did was cut down some lows, boost the mids and keep the highs at 12 'o clock.
I use a metal zone in my rig, if you take a little time to dial in a tone you like, you’ll love it, I have a blistering tone, my own tone! BOSS has a reputation and the Metal Zone is 1 of the best selling stomp box’s out there!
The fullbore looks fun for ridiculously abrasive bm or grind, or even straight up noise music or something. The MT2 has a really nice “useable” sound though when it’s not scoped (I don’t hate all scooped tones, but the metalzone scooped seems over the top and buzzy)
I ran the fullbore through the clean setting on my orange practice Amp and got the burzum filosofem sound down to a T, so it's definitely black metal worthy
I've been fucking with mine for about 2 weeks now, and it's pretty fuckin good. So far I get the best sound running it through clean channels vs with Amp distortion. It can give you really abrasive messy high distortion, but it's pretty easy to dial it back and have a pretty awesome tone that doesn't bleed into itself too. I'd recommend it, especially if you get it for a used price
@@Chudchanning you think i should get the fullbore or the metal zone mt-2 i want to play deftones songs and i play rock but when i play deftones i want a metal pedal i own strats so single coil which would be good for the band and clean amp
@@onlydeku6093 I'd definitely lean toward the mt-2 for your desired style and possibly stack it with a chorus pedal if you're looking for an aggressive psychedelic tone . the fullbore has alot of knobs but it's still kind of a discount Swedish chainsaw/can of bees sound that might not leave much room for nuance in the soundscape. But if you think a burzum filosofem sound is workable for you a fullbore isn't a bad choice and it's pretty affordable
Metal Zones are actually pretty good pedals, but the Full bore, I cant stand it, its sounds so bad to me. I am really not into the overly scooped thing and I also think it has too much gain, even when the mids are turned up on the pedal I dont like the gain structure, but just my subjective opinion
That fangs is like a nice in-between of these. It doesn't get as crazy as that full bore metal one, but it's better than any boss pedal for sure and less than half the price u can get em used like $30!!!!!
I actually like the Fangs and as far as value goes, its a great low cost metal distortion, cant stand the MXR Fullbore though, to me its ear cancer. MT2 however I think is better than both, but the Fangs is one of the most pleasantly surprising pedals I have bought. I bought it blind because it cost so little and I though "why not" and actually loved it when I played it
@@richardrardin9156 This proves how its all down to the player, I like the MT2 but I dont like the MXR Fullbore, worst hi gain pedal I have ever used, the MXR superbadass distortion , IMO, is twice the pedal the Fullbore is, and the Fangs is much better IMO than the Full bore, we all have different tastes I guess, which is good because otherwise sh*t would be boring
Prefer the Metal Zone... by a lot, actually... ...wouldn't think I'd ever say that, but, imho, the fullbore has just WAY too much gain... also, I just do not like this... "sizzling" kind of saturation.
The Fullbore Metal is a really awful sounding pedal, maybe one of the worst distortions I've ever used. Metal Zone is not the best but it's pretty good, I like it! Especially in FX Loop though. The Waza one is better than the original, less noise and the switch for the custom mode is also pretty good, quite different to the standard version so it's like two different distortions in the same box. From my memory of the Metal Core pedal (I sold it a couple of years ago now) I think the Custom mode sounds similar to the Metal Core. I've not heard anyone else say this so maybe it's just me and I have a bad memory.
Ironically, with the gain dialed down the MT-2 does sound good as a boost/EQ for a another pedal or for the gain channel of an amp. If the MT-2 used that way is good for Mr Windstein the riff God, I think it is good enough for us mere mortals. The fullbore is beyond redemption, it just sounds like crap and I still wonder to this day how I ended up owning one.

I love my MXR Fullbore Metal
My Fullbore broke down. But my Metal zone is still going strong.
You have to loop the MZ pedal Try it!
All I did was cut down some lows, boost the mids and keep the highs at 12 'o clock.
metal zone if wider but fullbore metal is heavier for me...!!!
@@Chudchanning honestly I might have to get one.
Fullbore kills M.Zone. One of the best metal pedals I've ever seen.
Metal Zones are actually pretty good pedals, but the Full bore, I cant stand it, its sounds so bad to me. I am really not into the overly scooped thing and I also think it has too much gain, even when the mids are turned up on the pedal I dont like the gain structure, but just my subjective opinion
Wow, never thought you could out-Metalzone the MT-2, but there’s your proof. - Lisa Simpson
Neither one has shit on tc electronic fangs distortion.
Fullbore metal ❤❤❤
very easy to over do it with both....thats the point tho
Still have to lay my hands on a wazacraft
agree 100%
Ironically, with the gain dialed down the MT-2 does sound good as a boost/EQ for a another pedal or for the gain channel of an amp. If the MT-2 used that way is good for Mr Windstein the riff God, I think it is good enough for us mere mortals. The fullbore is beyond redemption, it just sounds like crap and I still wonder to this day how I ended up owning one.
Because it can fake a proper chainsaw 😉
Both Jon Nödveidt and Set Teitan from Dissection used to boost their JCM900 with the MT-2. It's a big part of Dissection's guitar tone.
I heard they used DS-2 as well 🤔
@@DomeNightbearer I read about him using the MT-2 over here.

Boss wins! MXR sounds too scoop.
Fullbore > MetalZone
No, that boss is weak and fuzzy the FBM is insane
… and mt2 wins)
Actually the Boss Metal Tone - when used correctly, makes an excellent door stop.
Nope they’re both amazing pedals if someone’s says they don’t like that means they’re just amateurs
Helloo Sir 👦💖
The Metal Zone has alot more mids.
The hate of these pedals are hilariously stupid. I would love to hear how these players sound. My guess not so hot
I dont like the MXR Fullbore (hate is a strong word though)
I sound like this, but then I am not really fussed what people think
