    Great video - Always wondering what operations can be done on the car and ONLY if the engine is pulled. May be a good point to add to let us poor guys know - what not to try and what is doable.
    I have 1974 beetle with tons of hesitation - been through carb, fuel pump, now going for timing.
    I have a few questions:
    1. Is there a good simple diagram to confirm I have all hoses in the right places?
    2. I notice another 1/2" port (top right) on fan shroud - what is that for?
    3. I have a metal tube (maybe 3/8") coming up from the deck plate (drivers side to left of dist) and lands in a lil pot (with a lil nipple on top of it) mounted just behind the carb. I have not seen this on any bugs any videos. Is there a way I can send a photo?
    4. Can I do intake seal replacements on the car? Wondering if that maybe my vacuum leak.
    5. Will timing just go out?
    Thanks again - great videos

    • @Wiencourager

      1974 models had EGR, that’s what the extra pipe is for. Block it off if it’s bad. Can cause idle issues. Look up EGR on The Samba for more info. The port on the fan shroud is purge line for charcoal canister for the evaporation system. If that sYstem is hooked up you’ll get a lot less gas smell in your garage. Sadly many who don’t understand what the system does take it off. Same with EGR, if it’s working it helps highway mileage.

    I saw “Frannie” struggling to get an OEM muffler on a 69… she had a terrible time getting the manifold heater flanges to line up to the muffler. I bet if she loosened the slotted stud nut and hose clamps, the manifold would have moved enough to make it easier!

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  2 роки тому

      Yes if that area would’ve been loosened up a little bit, it would’ve made things much easier. I guess everyone does stuff different. But I don’t like to struggle, or teach ways of struggling.

    Another great video Slades. Why did you not end up using those intake boots? The previous owner of mine provided me with some from JBugs. Shouldn’t you use anti seize on the threads of the manifold bolts too? That’s what I’ve been taught to do.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 роки тому +1

      The ones from Jbugs, Felt very thin and flimsy. I didn’t like the way they went on. Usually you end up with a leak. Wolfsburg west sells the thick black German ones. They were so much better. You should use anti-seize whenever you can. I seldom use them on the intake bolts.

    • @blakewaddell451
      @blakewaddell451 3 роки тому

      @@SladesVWBeetle that’s good to know. I’m pretty cheap so I might try the ones he provided me first 😄. Yes I always use anti seize on intake or exhaust bolts usually and spark plugs too.

  • @michaeld.3779
    @michaeld.3779 3 роки тому +1

    Good video, Slade. I use the metal gaskets at the heads, however (they transfer heat better), but the paper works. Also, I wonder if tightening the center manifold nut is a good idea before installing the heat exchanger and muffler, since those heat riser ends can be a bitch to line up with the muffler flanges sometimes. Waiting to tighten the center manifold nut and manifold boots gives you wiggle room when installing the heat riser flanges to the muffler flanges.
    I like your idea of keeping the carb/manifold flange level, too. I never gave that much thought (just lucky, I guess).

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 роки тому +1

      How you been???
      I used the metal ones a couple years ago, and I had some problems. But of course after that it got lodged into my brain I didn’t want to use them again. But I know a lot of people do!
      I never tried to tighten the nut for the slot on the manifold last. That kind of makes me wonder, because I had to fight with my heat risers. Not real bad but enough to annoy me.
      I really don’t know how much it matters, with keeping the carb perfectly level. But after reading it over the years I do it just for the heck of it. I hope you’re staying safe my friend.

    • @michaeld.3779

      We’ve been well, thank you. Just waiting for the vaccine, so we can get out and live again. New got a greenhouse and since the climate here is fairly nice in winter, we’re spending time with that.
      For Christmas, I asked for a complete new TMI Oatmeal carper kit for the bug. I’m still wondering if I should use Quick Roof/Peel and Seal, or spend the extra money and go for Dynamat. Chris Valone says the Quick Roof works as well-and doesn’t stink like asphalt, so I’m thinking of saving the bucks and going that route. I’ll also put some 1/4 inch padding over the Quickroof-in the luggage compartment and wheel wells only.
      I don’t know how much waiting to tighten the the center manifold helps, but any help with lining up the riser ends to the muffler is okay by me. They never seem to line up perfectly.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 роки тому

      I’m confused with the vaccine. I hear it’s almost ready, then...not yet! This has been a terrible year!!
      I used the TMI kit and was very happy with the outcome. I think the quality was fine. Some people say to buy sewfine, but I think the TMI suited my needs perfectly well.
      I used the quick roof, and worked great! I did two layers on my floor, for more sound deafening action!
      I know someone else that used it and no odor. In my video I showed using a hair dryer to make it shape easier, worked great! And also, you figure I was using a hairdryer and making it warm, shape and mold it. And there was no odor at all.
