Love this channel because Jonny feels like a real gearhead. Gets his hands dirty, and his builds are realistic stuff, not just some UA-cam click-bait type video. Can’t wait to see what happens with the projects👍🏼 Good on ya Jonny!
Many thanks - Jonny is a project car magpie, and whilst the Allegro is ambitious, the Boxster, Beetle, Insight, Element and Smart are more down to earth things. Appreciate you following the channel
Just wanted to drop you a line and say that I really appreciate you seeing your projects through, Johnny. Unlike many others who are constantly flipping, it's great to see you slowly but surely making progress with your little fleet. Cheers!
As an ex-Porsche technician, always replace all the coil packs together. Really common fault on 986’s, I recall there were at leat seven different coil revisions. Don’t over tighten the screws! Your starter motor is “dragging”, needs an overhaul. The replacement wheels are far nicer, the original set is rarer as none liked them when ordering the car…
I'm not a mechanic so excuse my stupid question... but why would they put foam as a water quide instead of plastic like on 987? I suppose 987 doesn't fit on Jonny's car but maybe he could use some kind of impregnation spray to make a protective layer and prolong the life of the foam?
My bargain 986 Boxster project was a pretty successful project - I didn't love the car as much as I expected though). I covered a lot of common issues and repairs on my channel. Roof replacement/recover, foam blend door repair, brake and clutch bleeding, etc. You might need to replace your AOS. All the best !
Finding this particular project extremely helpful and well timed as I have in the last 2 years, inherited from my dear old late Dad, his 2.5 manual 1999 Boxster with the same paint code but with savannah trimmings. I too, share pretty much every issue you’ve come across, misfire, poor idle etc with the most recent and most annoying one, finding it had been pissing it’s pants at the slightest hint of moisture from our atmosphere for an indeterminate amount of time 🙄 I managed to get my eyes on your Boxster in its current location only last weekend and the progress you have made is inspiring. Looking forward to the rest of the journey. Kyle. CMTMB.
Kyle, thank you for watching and really glad you've found the episodes useful. I bet your Dad's 2.5 is a sweet car. Get the leaks sorted ASAP! Dave at Birmingham Car Keys is the man if you need the module replacing or repairing.
@ it really is a sweet sweet car previously owned by a real SSG. And thank you for the contact! I shall store it in my bookmarks for a literal rainy day. Thankfully, the 98 inch thick bit of foam that resides under the floor mat did its job of preventing a command module tsunami. Leaks traced. Holes in foam repaired. Drain holes cleared. Carpets dried. Car cover applied. Bullet dodged.
You can fix the foam liners with bicycle puncture kit, park tools patches, then spray the foam with truck bed polyurethane paint. They'll outlast the rest of the car
I was wondering if anyone had tried something like this, sounds like a great inexpensive way to future proof them! Seems a bit strange they made them out of foam in the first place, I know it reduces weight, cost and probably easier to fit foam but I would at least expect a decent plastic material rather than foam, your solution seems to use the old and add the strength of the bed liner sounds like a win to me!
This is a great project to show. The Boxster is absolutely a modern classic, it's still reasonably affordable and it's a great driver's car. Looking forward to the next episode...
Love my 2007 987 Boxster S. I have it serviced regularly as required and have had a full badges off detail and ceramic treatment about five years ago. Looks and drives great hopefully for another ten years.
Your Boxster is coming along nicely, and the new wheels look much better. I had one as my daily driver for 14years and been driving my 987 for the last six. DIY is so easy on these cars despite being mid-engined. From the look of the suspension in the video, looks like a refurb is due. Keep these excellent videos coming!
Great to see her coming along . . . wheel change was the absolutely right choice !! I know your busy, but you poor cars need a quick splash n flash !! Cheers as always !!
I had the odd misfire in my Boxster S at the beginning of summer. Switched from Morrisons Super, (was a distance thing), to Shell V-Power and did 1500 miles over the summer with no more issues. So if you're having misfires and you're not using V-Power it might be worth trying that first.
My Boxster has never misfired on any fuel. It has used E10 as the staple diet got the past 15 years with no problem! Does your car have an ECU problem?
I can honestly say I’ve never done it but it must be satisfying buying a old Car like this with Character and having great people fix it up and bring it back to life. Still on the side of having a little bit of mechanical knowledge is dangerous to my absolute minimum knowledge to not attempt things. 😂 jacking a Car up would give me a sweat. My friend can completely disassemble and reassemble Cars perfect. His last major job was on his A8 That needed a engine life for access Audi wanted £5k to replace a £288 part. He did it himself and replaced other parts while he was at it for £350 and knows it’s done right. Rightly your paying for the absolute pain and time of doing it as the Car sat for a week in a mess. I seen the pictures and just said I’d be crying. Good for Johnny, he went back home happy. I’m going to fit the word “Gash” in to a conversation this weekend. 😂
Noticed the sticky starter motor on start up! It’s a bit fiddly but easy enough to remove, if you remove the solenoid and spray some silicone lube in there just fix it! Fixed mine
Great Episode, and yes Jonny I agree with you on the Wheel front. It's also nice to see you can still do some basic maintenance without too much of a faff. Here's to Episode 4 😊
Excellent video as ever Jonny. Full marks to Elliot for the job and, footage. As the driver of an Alfa spider with manual hood, more and more I question the logic for so much electronic gadgetry. Not so much the little Boxster but, more recent cars on the whole. I see cars with electric door opening, boot opening etc. For what gain? More weight, more to go wrong and bugger all (if any) saving in time. Cars are getting fatter and heavier and I can't fathom why 90% of it is progress, not regress.
I definitely prefer the new wheels . And as yourself I'll be spending my birthday tomorrow working on my car by spending a few relaxing hours cleaning it
Great job on the coil packs, is the clutch pedal heavy? The dash always looked busy and dated and remembered the plastic window, Porsche guys called it the Boxster chop method making sure to stop half way down in cold conditions to prevent snapping it... I bought a 987 way back, apparently 40% improvements, very impressive to say the least. Great to see you fix stuff and help a lot of drivers to learn without paying through the nose with Porsche.
Coincidentally did my 987 roof a few weeks ago after both of the plastic parts Eliott talks about in this vid snapped while aborad in Italy. Ordered Porsche OE plastic ball joint holders for the tips of the pushrods at £7 a side, then swapped them onto the old arms. Took about an hour. Easy job for someone to do themselves if they feel like it, plenty of tutorials online.
Back when the Boxster was a few years old I used to make good money installing Boxster brakes on other cars because so many Boxsters got 911 brakes as an upgrade and Boxster brakes are much better than most Japanese car's brakes at the time.
Four years ago I had bought one of Germany's cheapest (and not totally rusty or damaged) MX-5's. I patched the roof myself and mowed the holes, but next year the old lady will get a new top.
I think I crossed paths with yourself while I was on honeymoon in Florida recently, I wanted to say hi but also didn’t want to disturb you. I’ve been following your UA-cam for a little while now as a fellow petrolhead myself and love the videos, hope you had a nice holiday if it was you! 😎
20:05 After changing the coil packs and you restarted it, what was that party horn blower type noise? Is there a pulley / belt that needs replacing? EDIT: A perfect noise for your birthday, BTW 🥳
Always clear the down pipes from the drip trays as they clog up at the bottom and as a preventive measure , wrap your ecu thats under the seat in a plastic bag and seal it in the event of any water getting down there
It's coming along very well Jonny. I look forward to the video where you're thrashing the ringhole out of the 2900 quid Boxster along some lovely B roads on your gorgeous, hilly green Island.
Mine had the foam holes and the starter squeak....and duff springs and a stripped alu hub with helicol repair. Do miss it though, epic around roundabouts
I agree, the replacement wheels are better (albeit marginally, the originals are also great) than the old set. If I had a garage of some kind where I could house something like this, I would also go for either a 986 Boxter, or perhaps the first generation Cayman (987) to save me the bother of having to deal with the soft -top.
@8:47: What is this kinda triangular plastic thing, sitting on the engine cover, anyone? I found one of these when I cleaned out the drain holes on my 986 just last week. Thanks in advance! Very timely episode for me, my fellow Jonathan Smith. Now I've done the drain holes (nearside one was completely blocked) the car is still steaming up but hopefully it's just some residual moisture in the carpet/sound deadening. I much prefer the new 17" twists to the previous 'tea-towel holders', but my favourite OEM 17s are the Sport Classics - I have a spare set of these, if you're ever in Aberdeen, Jonny. Like when you come to do a barn find on my MG Midget perhaps?!
The wheel question is somewhat superfluous as for me by far the best wheel on a 986 is the 17” Sport Classic (not the 18” available on later cars and 911s). They aren’t very common and you certainly wouldn’t expect to get a set for free though, so what you have is fine.
Jonny you need to learn the Boxster chop on that plastic rear window. When it starts folding, do a karate chop in the middle so it folds in half or it'll start getting bad creases
@@TheLateBrakeShow I really miss mine. I had a 2002. Baby forced sale. They genuinely handle better than a 911. In the Porsche club the 911s would get away a little on the straights but after a few corners I'd be right on them lol
Great episode. Definitely see myself owning a Boxster in the future. Can’t decide which wheel I prefer. I like both of them. Nice to see they are easy to work on and not too expensive for parts either. Looking forward to seeing it cleaned.
Having been lucky enough to drive dozens of sports cars, this 126,000 mile Box still impressed me. With new suspension I bet it will rip even more. It's just so satisfying to drive.
@ yeah I wondered if it was to save the job for this vid. Nice and safe knowing all bolts would come right out and the coils would pop off easily after the service 😊
Hmm prefer the original wheels sorry. I have Cup2 on my 964 so like a more solid star to a spiral of you know what I mean. Great series of videos, great wee car
Sorry to hear about the corrupted sd card, might be a pirated one - used to be lots of those around. In my semi-pro photography days, I used cameras with two memory card slots (Canon dslrs in my case) set up to duplicate so there was always a main (RAW for maximum quality) & a backup card (JPEG for faster distribution to media desks), and exclusively used Lexar or SanDisk cards only bought from reliable shops to avoid pirated copies. Kingston was a slightly cheaper brand whose quality was supposed to be close to the two market leaders but I never used those (there were concerns about some of the cheaper brands cards corrupting as well with cheap components).
you cant fool us JS, we know how it went...its my birthday, suns out so i'll quickly swap the coilpacks then enjoy a day out topless...finishes job looks outside its dark :)
man i wish id known about these guys sooner, i after a long heartbreaking search had to scrap for parts a mint Saab 900SE cabrio in green for parts as to fix the roof motor via saab was £1700+ vat just for the part....a plastic gearwheel, because it was bonded to the motor it needed whole motor changed, and in typical Saab fashion it was a GM part but modified for the Saabs...grr! the corrupted sdcard, as long as windows sees it its fixable ;)

996 Generation 911's have coil covers, I guess because they get more wheel spray on a 996 than you would on a 986, you can even get swanky aftermarket carbon fibre ones if you hunt about a bit. They fit on all the engines of this generation car, both 996 & 986, you can see the mounting holes on the cam covers in this video, a pair of M6 bolt holes. As coil packs are so renowned for failing, and bolts corroding in, it's not the silliest idea ever to fit a pair.
You forgot the boxster “chop” at the beginning. On earlier cars with plastic back window you put the roof half way down, then get out & push the window inwards to make it fold properly. It will crack & split from the fabric after a while otherwise. Owned a few 986’s. Love the things. The only people that talk smack about them are ones that have never driven one.
Jonny, what was that funny sound that sounded like someone shouting when you first fired up the boxter after you fitted the new parts? Time stamp 20:06
Great choice on the wheels, although the ones it came on are also porsche original wheels, they somehow look like cheap replicas or something from halfords in their style.
Johnny asking which of those wheels I prefer is like asking me if I would rather you chopped off my arm or my leg! Neither preferably 😂🤣But I will agree that the ''new'' wheels are more ''timeless'' and less generic and more iconic Boxer than the old set. But lets be fair, Boxers had ugly wheels anyways. But that particular style of Boxer wheel (new) always looked to me like a BMX Mag wheel that got left by the fire too long! 😂
Car Hoods in Cheshire are great guys - they did our TT Conv and did a brilliant job......

Loving the updates though Rich keeps eyeing up Porsches on autotrader 😂
I do prefer the replacement wheels.
I think I need a set of those. Great advice
No plugs while you’re in there, Jonny? Access for the packs is much better than I’d feared in the boxster give the engine layout!
Plugs were done recently - Jonny mentions it in the vid.
happy birthday from the boxster
My birthday coming up next week and my plans are to work on the car in the garage till late . 😊
Definately prefer the new wheels you put on.
Shouldn't the drip tray be made out of hard plastic instead out of foam (?) ?
I see exactly what you mean about the tyres, the new ones are far better
You just need a bit of flex seal on those drip trays 😂
You forgot the boxster “chop” at the beginning. On earlier cars with plastic back window you put the roof half way down, then get out & push the window inwards to make it fold properly. It will crack & split from the fabric after a while otherwise.
Owned a few 986’s. Love the things. The only people that talk smack about them are ones that have never driven one.
THIS!! otherwise the window WILL crack one day
may not look as clean, but the zip round the window on the mk1 mx5 was a good idea
I did 'the Chop' on my Ford Streetka last year , and cracked the vinyl screen. Needed to take the fabric roof off to replace😁😁
@@streetkaaccord344this is not about a ka
Jonny, what was that funny sound that sounded like someone shouting when you first fired up the boxter after you fitted the new parts? Time stamp 20:06
Squeeky starter motor release bearing. Common issue.
Great choice on the wheels, although the ones it came on are also porsche original wheels, they somehow look like cheap replicas or something from halfords in their style.
Hello Jonny, was wondering where you got that nice tool box/tray? That looks very handy.
Made by Kendo
I’m surprised you didn’t opt to replace the spark plugs while you were there. Also classic VW/Audi starter motor. 😂
Plugs changed in episode 2
Johnny asking which of those wheels I prefer is like asking me if I would rather you chopped off my arm or my leg! Neither preferably 😂🤣But I will agree that the ''new'' wheels are more ''timeless'' and less generic and more iconic Boxer than the old set. But lets be fair, Boxers had ugly wheels anyways. But that particular style of Boxer wheel (new) always looked to me like a BMX Mag wheel that got left by the fire too long! 😂
