The Top Gear reboot (and the various international versions) all proved one thing. You can’t just stick any three idiots in cars and automatically expect it to work. You need the right three idiots. To really duplicate the Top Gear formula, you need to start with a media figure with the stature and credibility that people will take at least somewhat seriously. That person needs a behind-the-scenes partner like Andy Willman. They need to have a solid concept for their show and find two or three other presenters who the main person already works well with. Joe Rogan might be the most tone-deaf answer Ben could have given. Just appallingly poor choice if he wants the series to have the kind of (mostly) universal appeal which The Grand Tour and Golden Era Top Gear were known for,
Rogan wouldn't do it anyway. He has his family, his comedy, podcast and UFC job. No way he'd want to be away from all of that for long shoots on the road.
Original trio worked so well because they were all well read, educated, knew a lot of about cars, driving, general culture to connect with people from all walks of life. Never shied away from laughing at their own expense and knew what would make a great TV. Additionally they all had their own little corners of interests which contrasted with others. There are plenty of decent automotive journos, but none have all these components, some are quirky, some are very knowledgeable, some very "laddish", other can drive, but that's it. I'd say what we need is at least one of them to be not involved with cars but quite eccentric and of comedic background, like Theo Von, then someone who can drive like Harris and last one to keep everyone in check and who will keep facts straight and not only looking at the Porsches, like Porter from old Top Gear.
Jimmy Broadbent, Steve Alvarez Brown, Misha Charoudin. Between them all, they have a foot in racing, sim racing, meme pop culture, plus the 3 of them together are hilarious together and have a natural chemistry together. They love cars.
7:50 I agree with that, one of my favourite episodes were the ones when they were in sports cars and the M3 CSL on the Isle of Man. It was more about the cars back then, but they still fooled around. Was the perfect mix
The next gen top gear is @ThrottleHouse. They are just hitting their stride. And word is, their second road trip is coming soon. (love you guys too) :)
If THE Ben Collins was on it, I'd watch. If Joe Rogen was on it, I wouldn't. Not sure who else I'd pick though. I think I saw Rory Reid on Fifth Gear, so he's out. Chris Harris might be reluctant to go again but it's also not Top Gear, so maybe he would but a clean slate to move on from the past could be better. No idea for a third but maybe some YT'er that's credible.
Here is how you make a new trip work. Have the first episode start with Richard may and Clarkson driving their favourite cars to a studio or location. Then handing over the keys to the cars they drove there in and go from there. Will give the sense of it's not a replacement but a hand over/reboot. Not a replacement but a continuation of the story.
I can think of people with qualities in each field that is required (knowledge, story-telling, humour, driving skills, charms). What I can NOT think of is a trio that combines all that in a way that creates the chemistry needed! And by that chemistry I do not only mean friendship, I mean quirkiness, mockery, running gags, habits, national traits etc. And the readiness to travel the world under sometimes rough circumstances and do what has to be done. Those guys may spend most nights in 5 star hotels, but I am sure that the job can become excruciating at times. And the travelling aspect is so linked to TG and TGT that no show can be a worthy successor without the presenters being prepared to go for adventurous journeys together. I see this as the biggest obstacle. I love people like Jason Fenske from Engineering Explained or Ed Bolian or Jason Cammisa, but I cannot imagine them living in neighbouring hotel rooms for weeks and create a strong bond. In short, Clarkson, May and Hammond are irreplaceable! Even though Ben Collins and Chris Harris may seem like a good starting point, I don`t see a British trio tbh. I would rather suggest that Amazon goes all American. Ed Bolian has an attitude that reminds me of Clarkson at times. It might be worth talking to him about a possible cast. But not Freddy or Tyler, they don`t have the stage presence or culture needed. Sorry!
As much as I like the three, they are not what I’d want for that show. None have that comedic wit about them. Ed Bolian would be very boring…like a teacher or librarian.
LOL no way. They're big youtubers no doubt. But they don't have charming personalities or the right kind of humor. We need 3 not-so-famous yet blokes who just click.
It feels sacrilegious to say this, but I think Ben was almost wasted as the Stig. I mean he did an incredible job, and even when not driving, he bought stacks of added value to the show, but since he stopped being the Stig we have discovered that he is outstanding in front of and talking to the camera. He is relaxed, knowledgeable, and interesting as any car show presenter I can think of. I also have a theory that he would have made an excellent James Bond. Just so long as we keep seeing him, even if it is just on his own UA-cam channel.
The presenters need to be buddies or have great chemistry, the laughter and genuine parts were the best parts and why it’s rewatchable even tho the cars and politics might be outdated. I have a two buddies and we go on a long weeklong 500 mile+ bicycle trips every two years, we simultaneous love and hate each other and it’s the best most chaotic rememberable week.
Three car guys with experience in front of a camera, who have also gone on plenty of wacky adventures. Preferably not all from the UK, and each with their own distinctive personality. Chris Harris Tyler Hoover Blair Jocelyne (a.k.a. MOOG) Assuming of course these three have chemistry, but they all seem like pretty easy going guys.
For the record, I'm all for continuing with three new presenters. However, the issue with doing so is that Amazon isn't going to just hand it off to the new guys and let them do it however they want, like the original trio had free rein to do. Amazon is going to want to have their fingers in the pot and control every aspect of whatever the new show becomes, which just won't work for the style of show Clarkson Hammond and May had!
For me, Ed March of c90adventures is a one man low budget Grand Tour. He is probably always going to prefer doing his own thing but he is very funny, sometimes corny, and has the ability to tell a story.
You have all basis covered with that combination. You have the experience of Metcalf , the ability of Harris and the comic relief of Smith and Sniff . Richard Porter is a comedy genius and Jonny is the everyman . There is someone there that we can all relate to .
The most important thing for amazon to do, is be realistic and scale down the "entertainment" aspect quite a lot and just make it about cars and fun little challenges and then expand the scale of it as they go along if needed.. There's plenty of interesting candidates in the Autoalex cars, TDC and ATG trinity to pick from. They'd pretty much have a solid fanbase already...
If we need a story teller, Jason Cammisa is one of the best ones out there today in Automotive media land. Add the Thomas and James for Throttlehouse and you’re getting quite the chemistry. A Brit, a Canadian and. Well travelled and worldly American.
Top Gear, The grand Tour…. This content belongs on a platform like UA-cam. When something new comes out, review it immediately, not 12 months later. I don't understand why DRIVETRIBE couldn't have been the new home for Clarkson, Hammond, and May. In the gaps, make a “special”.
Ben Collins, Chris Harris and Rory Reid would be my option for the presenting line up, Two racing drivers and Rory has a genuine enthusiastic love for cars. You would need a Stig, instead have a 2 lap shoot out for the two racer in the same car for the fastest the fastest time.
They have to face it, times have changed. Not only was it the talent originally but since then UA-cam has provided a huge list of options that no one will likely successfully compete against. It's over boys, it's been over for a while.
Very much agree with Ben's comments about "whoever takes on TGT" should NOT get hate mail. After all, whoever it is, isn't actually REPLACING Clarkson, Hammond & May and (I would hope) they'll be smart enough to NOT try & do things the same way that the fab 3 did. They need to come up with a new format even though it will (of course) be similar to the old format, there MUST be enough difference in the way it gets done so that you can see the new folks are NOT trying to be Jez, James & Rich and then I think it WILL be accepted.
Chris Harris is the kiss of death. He makes my eyes roll. Unattractive, overgrown beard, no charisma. boring presentation. I struggle to find a reason why he is on TV at all. That's probably why you never see him on TV that often.
@adeaston6553 each to their own I guess. BTW none of the 3 people I mentioned are on "TV", it's a dying media, has been since the Internet. Also, none of the JRJ trio are attractive, its about the chemistry and the cars, if you want eye candy your in the wrong place. You definitely sound like an aging Chris Evans and Matt Leblanc fan over there pmsl 🤣😂😅🫣 I'm not so sure about kiss of death either tbh, he was the most popular and well received of the TG reboot, even more so than your boy CE. His youtube channels doing well, podcast too. But yeah, like I said each to their own lol
They need to completely start from 0 and reinvent it. Id even start with a new name. You cant just throw 3 random guys in and think it will work. Clarkson himself said it would be best if it would be basically someone unknown from the street.
People are forgetting they need a great producer. The trio always had Andy Willman pulling the strings. Yes they chemistry, that’s not in question but behind the scenes pulling the strings was Mr Willman. They need to nail that role first, then fill the presenting roles around the producers vision.
Big shout out to Chris Harris. He’s one of the very few gems to have come out of rebooted TG. As for the show is there any point bringing it or TGT back? UA-cam is full of channels doing basically the same thing. If the come back it needs to be something totally new that nobody else has done or is doing. That’s what made TG.
Rowan Atkinson is a true legend, Into cars, and a distinct and a familiar voice I would listen to for narration. Ben Colins is a great choice for his experience. And a mechanic is needed and someone with a good sense of humor. I'm thinking Turbo Yoda (Al from the skid factory and Might Car Mods) Any UA-cam personality would be destroy their channel by going to the Grand Tour. Trolls will rip them to shreds. Show has to be fresh and different and not try to be a rehash of what James, Richard and Jeromy have done already.
I think DriveTribe already has what Ben was talking about and has become the new TG. On both this and the main channel the videos are either a group effort or the presenter goes off and does their own "segment". Just this video alone shows the kind of feel as TG and it already has a "Holy Trinity. Ben has the seasoned professional vibe of Clarkson. Mike has the sometimes mellow sometimes giddy vibe of May. And continuing the legacy, Izzy is coming into her own and definitely has her father's passion. You don't need all the outrageous silliness. That was the Clarkson's, May's and Hammond's identity.
People here are overthinking the automotive bit. TGT and TG were far more a Buddy roadtrip show than anything else. The OG American TG had that part down with Faust and Wood. Go all in with that premise.
If it’s a show where cars (and other vehicles) feature prominently then whoever steps up to the mantle has to be knowledgable and interested. Like Clarkson, Hammond & May are. For me, I’d like to give Henry Catchpole a try. He’s a great motoring journalist.
Ben, I'm very disappointed that you came to my stomping ground and i wasnt even invited to show you round, i thought we were friends!! 😂 In all seriousness though, I'd love a crack at being a presenter on either TG or TGT you'd never be able to replicate the chemistry of the trio and that's where the TG reboot failed.
It's important to remember that the motor-vehicle industry is currently in turmoil which was predicted by Clarkson and the team. I am sure this was part of the thinking when they "retired" their position with Amazon.
The only way to make it work is to not try to replace them. Three new presenters each episode: One car journalist, one comedian, one wildcard. If the audience hates one or all of them, it's not a problem, there will be new ones along next week.
I think it would be cool to do a rotating cast of car show hosts. Like Jonny Smith, Paul Cowland, Marc Elvis Priestly from the UK. Maybe Tavarish, Bolian, Hoover. The original cast of Top Gear America with Foust, Rutledge and Ferrara was amazing. Ant Instead, Sara-n-tuned, Derek Bieri, David Frieburger, Mike Finnegan, Steve Dulcich, Tony Angelo. Mix and match hosts and do specials.
If they do pick a new trio, those three are going to need very thick skin, and be comfortable in that thick skin as they make the show their own. Because us fans are brutal..
Trying to remake Top Gear is like when you asked your mom for McDonald’s, and she gave you yesterday’s meatloaf in between two pieces of white bread and told you “it’s the same thing”. You can no more recreate Top Gear with three people and some cars than you can recreate Seinfeld by throwing a stand up comedian together with three random people talking about “nothing”. They need to give up this idea and make something NEW.
Any new car show needs, first and foremost, car people. Not just people who like cars but people who have a real enthusiasm for the new, old, experimental and wacky. What Mike said about it being a car magazine show is spot on. News and testing of new low end and high end cars, bits on general motoring and bits on racing, and bits on things the presenters are genuinely interested in. It needs to be run as much by the presenters as the producers, and it needs to be done without an insane budget that just leads to over the top, unrelatable content. It will also needs time to grow and evolve, so planning on it being a big success from the start is just destined for failure. It needs to be a bit niche to actually be interesting, and I feel it needs to be a bit nerdy about cars too.
There are many different elements to consider. Part of what contributed to the rejection of the post Clarkson Top gear was the fact that they did not leave on their own accord. On Grand tour, they are living gracefully to other things. This alone will make it easier to accept a new host panel. At the same time, I think there might not be an audience for this sort of car show anymore.
All this is proving, going by the majority of comments, is that people don't like change. It doesn't seem to matter the age either. I'm observing this and finding it mildly fascinating.
DRIVETRIBE is already the natural successor. The reigns have already been passed over to your team. You have great content and chemistry. Keep doing what you are doing!
I would love to see Ben Collins, Joe Rogan and Daniel Riccardo as the new presenters.... Can you imagine! Ben would be of a more old school approach, Joe would be the competitive one and Daniel will be care free, funny natural talent. I would totally watch that!
I kinda think possibly starting with maybe 5-6 rather than a 3 might help with making an obvious point that it’s an attempt to make a new version with a different format. And as Ben said use each of them for their own content that is compatible with their talents….possibly Ben Collins, auto Alex, Matt from high peak, billy monger Izzy Hammond Paul di resta/a Davidson/julian palmer or similar Jodie Kidd and Amy macdonald. A combination from them are possible members of the 6 I’d say
let’s be honest. after seeing it happen with top gear, it will obviously be the same outcome if they do it with the grand tour. i am a fan of the new top gear presenters but i just couldn’t attach their faces to the name “TOP GEAR” so i just found no interest in watching it. they should just scrap the name and let it be because the Clarkson, Hammond and May era just can’t be recreated imo. it’s gonna feel less like what it was in the first place even though it’s still a motoring show.
I would love to see if Ben Collins, Mike Fernie and auto alex could work in a grand tour setting.. I think the biggest fail amazon can do is to try and copy the old trio and the chosen new trio try to hard to BE the old trio..

Joe Rogan might be the most tone-deaf answer Ben could have given. Just appallingly poor choice if he wants the series to have the kind of (mostly) universal appeal which The Grand Tour and Golden Era Top Gear were known for,
i mean chris harris went to be interviewed by joe, so could be why
@@topmandog1Mistake for Harris.
Yup
Rogan wouldn't do it anyway. He has his family, his comedy, podcast and UFC job. No way he'd want to be away from all of that for long shoots on the road.
Rogan the fascist enabler isn't a popular choice anymore
I enjoy these two guys talking so much... can be about anything
Throttle House is already a spiritual successor to TG/GT
Jimmer is absolutely the Hammond of the group
Plz no punterino Jimmer
@woundedcrow4606 They would be the best trio for the job! For sure !
Mike, Ben and Izzy would make a good show. Just saying
Yeah put someone who knows nothing about cars just because his father does
7:50 I agree with that, one of my favourite episodes were the ones when they were in sports cars and the M3 CSL on the Isle of Man. It was more about the cars back then, but they still fooled around. Was the perfect mix
The next gen top gear is @ThrottleHouse. They are just hitting their stride. And word is, their second road trip is coming soon. (love you guys too) :)
Cars were just a small part to the story of three blokes with chemistry experiencing a crazy life. And we got to go along for the ride.
Nice chemistry, enjoyed this.
Chris Harris for powerful cars, Jason Cammisa for iconic cars, Mat Watson for reasonable car reviews
Sorry!
Is that guy Gary glitter still around? How about him and a couple boy scouts? There would always be dynamic tension
In just seven days, I will build you a MA AH AN.............
Ed Bolian, Tyler Hoover, and Freddie Hernandez. And change the name from Grand Tour to Car Trek :D
They´re just not that funny.
Yes! I was going to say this
They are mediocre at it. Too forced, too faked bad acting
Chris Harris
Tyler Hoover
Blair Jocelyne (a.k.a. MOOG)
Assuming of course these three have chemistry, but they all seem like pretty easy going guys.
Izzy Hammond
Iecs.
Great choice Ben ❤❤😊
Chris Harris, Sniff & Smith and Harry Metcalf.
Smith & sniff and Chris Harris as the trio. Harry as a special correspondent
I can see porter taking it on..
@@geek9642 he is an original after all
Seriously chuffed by the thought of Smith and Porter interacting with Harry Metcalf on camera.
I'm going for Mike, Ben, and Izzy as the next hosts
Drivetribe is currently filling the void left by GT & TG
Keep up the good work
Ben Collins, Taylor from Autoalex, and Chris Harris
Because to him it's about car's, you probably want cheesy content @adeaston6553
My trio would be Ben Collins, Chris Harris and Mat Watson
I think Ben would probably be one of the only people who wouldnt get any hate for stepping in to the role, hes the bloody stig at the end of the day
Not boring celebs thank you.
Ben, I'm very disappointed that you came to my stomping ground and i wasnt even invited to show you round, i thought we were friends!! 😂
In all seriousness though, I'd love a crack at being a presenter on either TG or TGT you'd never be able to replicate the chemistry of the trio and that's where the TG reboot failed.
Mike, Ben, Chris Harris with maybe one more, would make for excellent viewing.
Is it against the law for Ben Collins not to refer to himself as The Stig (or former Stig)?
I think whoever it is, needs to be very young guys with old souls. And let them grow in their roles.
Rebrand, would love to see the old stig and youtubers luke @carswithluke on the show
I think it would be cool to do a rotating cast of car show hosts. Like Jonny Smith, Paul Cowland, Marc Elvis Priestly from the UK. Maybe Tavarish, Bolian, Hoover. The original cast of Top Gear America with Foust, Rutledge and Ferrara was amazing. Ant Instead, Sara-n-tuned, Derek Bieri, David Frieburger, Mike Finnegan, Steve Dulcich, Tony Angelo. Mix and match hosts and do specials.
Ben and the throttle house guys. Or just the throttle house guys. It doesn't need to be three.
At the same time, I think there might not be an audience for this sort of car show anymore.
jason cammisaa ,chris harris , and ......................?
Those two would be amazing working together.
Henry Catchpole or Jay Emm
Rowan Atkinson
I rate Jason Cammisa highly, for his on screen charisma & believe he would be an excellent choice. You'd have to put Randy Probst along with him.
Jason is an excellent presenter.
Jimmy Broadbent as the new stig, Ben Collins as the "main" host, with Hubnut and Robert Dunn from Aging wheels as the sidekicks.
No way! Ben you're a legend! Are you doing cartrek?
Alright I'll do it, I'm 21 from Latvia, have lexus is200 , and cars are life
Ben Collin’s for grand tour 100%
All this is proving, going by the majority of comments, is that people don't like change. It doesn't seem to matter the age either. I'm observing this and finding it mildly fascinating.
Only answer: Gino D'Acampo, Fred Sirieix, and Gordon Ramsay.
My guy YES absolutely.
I actually enjoyed the Top Gear US show with Adam Ferrara, Tanner Foust, Rutledge Wood. Thought they worked well!
Ben Collins, Jenson Button & Chris Harris would be the trio I’d pick 😉
DRIVETRIBE is already the natural successor. The reigns have already been passed over to your team. You have great content and chemistry. Keep doing what you are doing!
LOL. Worst take.
Are you being serious....??? You can't be....😮
I would love to see Ben Collins, Joe Rogan and Daniel Riccardo as the new presenters.... Can you imagine! Ben would be of a more old school approach, Joe would be the competitive one and Daniel will be care free, funny natural talent.
I would totally watch that!
I've been watching the new Australian to gear and while it is a bit dicey, Blair from might car mods is an absolute shining light- he'd be great
I’d definitely agree with Blair as a potential host, he seems like he’d be pretty easy to get along with if thrown into the mix
I think they'll start with 4
let’s be honest. after seeing it happen with top gear, it will obviously be the same outcome if they do it with the grand tour.
i am a fan of the new top gear presenters but i just couldn’t attach their faces to the name “TOP GEAR” so i just found no interest in watching it.
they should just scrap the name and let it be because the Clarkson, Hammond and May era just can’t be recreated imo. it’s gonna feel less like what it was in the first place even though it’s still a motoring show.
I would love to see if Ben Collins, Mike Fernie and auto alex could work in a grand tour setting.. I think the biggest fail amazon can do is to try and copy the old trio and the chosen new trio try to hard to BE the old trio..
