It’s common for Porsche engines to smoke from cold if they’ve been sitting as you get some oil seepage through the valve stem oil seals, which then sits in the flat cylinders. Probably did it a favour having a bit of extra oil in the cylinders for a will it start. Nice one!
Large portion of Kudos to you Rob for persevering and hitting the goal of getting it running. a nice detail and that will be a differant motor cant wait to see chris,s face on this one crack on
Alway got to be a bit careful with leaving the pump not 100% torqued down when testing. Not because of the obvious risks but because any EVAP system can throw a hissy that pressures are wrong which then can start to throw out trims etc as you in effect introducing an air leak to the engine. Nice work fellas, a satisfying episode 😊
Hello BOTH, good to know that Chris is having a well earned rest in the sunshine. Hey Rob, you are not the only person who gets excited , here is me bouncing up and down waiting for the engine to start, so it did, and having had a dealership service recently, the engine runs well! After so much effort in checking everything over ROB - including that fuel pump, you deserve to be so pleased with yourself. Best wishes from Lincolnshire.
just a comment on the smoke when you started it there is a thing called a air oil separater can be seen at 16:45 the round black thing they can fail and put a lot of oil in to the engin it has a diaphragm in that can fail . as the smoke cleared after a bit it probably isn't a problem but always worth concidering
I love how despite having worked on no doubt countless non runners to get them running, you're still excited when they do run. This looks like a lovely little car and maybe one for you or Chris to keep 😀
With such low mileage it will be worth all the effort. Well done Rob for sticking at it and getting it to run. I agree with you on the fuel pump replacement but it was worth putting that old one back in just to hear it run and it sounds sweet. Thanks Rob and Chris for another exciting video on 'will it run'? 👍👍
You had every right to worry about the smoke. Cars bought "for a good price" are rarely this good, so naturally you go looking for faults. Sometimes Rob you find a little gem, and you certainly have here. You have done enough cars in your life to have a little more confidence in your judgement and like anyone mistakes happen but not that often. Chris should be showering praise on you for this one and with the addition of his magic touch this should be an absolute winner. Cheers, Bob
Another good videos Rob and Chris and also good to see the Business expanding with the work going on & paint booth etc... it would make for good watching if you and Chris recruited an apprentice; you could both teach them things they would never learn off any other mechanics or classroom
Great video - I bought a Boxster S that had been sitting for 3 years, but outside. A bit of tinkering and it flew through MOT. Biggest issue is steel bolts seizing in all the alloy suspension bits. Amazing how quiet yours was on start. The top end is always a bit noisy for a minute or so when they have been sitting. Smoke and idle are probably the air oil separator - easy swap for you.
The blue smoke you noted is often caused by the AOS (air-oil separator) system. I would suggest the diaphragm in the AOS needs replacement due to age and inaction.
Hi Rob, early base model 2.5’s are becoming very popular, so great find with this mileage :). You need to check the ecu under the passenger seat for any water damage, this will cause odd window and alarm faults etc, it’s a well known issue. These cars are the business, and well worth the effort 😎👍
I wouldn't change the fuel pump. The problem was probably only a stuck brush, or dirt on the commutator from not being used. A new pattern one would not be as good as a genuine, low miles original.
My boxster windows used to open if the central locking had timed out (disabled if not used for 5 days) and door had to be opened by key. Don't know if intentional or not? Fix was to come out of car and lock then unlock door using central locking
Hey Rob, just now paused after you got the Boxster started. Mate, your enthusiasm & positivity is infectious, one of the main reasons I've been a subscriber for 6+ years. Chris, hope you enjoyed your romantic (naughty) weekend.... Blue Pills are a game changer!😊
Hi Rob & Chris, now this is an interesting find guys, how about that genuine mileage too..!! Looking forward to the progress of the Porsche..👍👍👍. Alex.
I've replaced 2 pumps (just the actual pump unit not too spiteful that way) common problem with the Boxster, seems to seize up through lack of use best to run them for 20 minutes or so every now and again.
10:47 it's Tayna, Rob. I can imagine the peeps over at Tayna cringing for ever time you miss-pronounce their name! I've been using Tayna for past 11 years. Lovely. Keep it up boys.
Great to see this Boxster brought back to running condition. If the old fuel is pre-ethanol it might even run on that stuff mixed with some fresh petrol. I bet that will be a fun little car and brilliant to use with the top down in the sunshine. Thanks for another entertaining video.
Great video. It made me smile when you got excited that it started! That engine sounded sweet. From what I’ve heard, smoke on a cold start can be the air/oil separator. Bit like a crankcase breather. Bit fiddly to change, but not too expensive 👍
Well done Rob couple of things before you go too far with it ,firstly the soft top has to be programmed for the correct sequence, that should sort out the problem with the electric window operation as well, also the hood lifting linkage on both sides gets very sticky when not used for long periods, give it a good clean and soak the links in some Bulldog BDX is you can get you hands on some . Looks like you lads are on too a good one here cheers.
Hi Rob, dont worry about the smoke, its likely caused by a sticky crankcase vent valve, these cars are quite prone to that. A good run will sort that out. Its nothing to worry about. Drop the gearbox sump and change the filter and fluid tho as i noticed its tip-tronic. Also the gearbox oil cooler is cooled by the engine coolant by means of a heat exchanger, if the rubber o ring in these fail then it will mix coolant with transmission fluid and these cars are also prone to that also, just another thing to look at as its sat for so long. The IMS bearing is also a weak point with these engines also but yours is such low miles it wont be an issue just yet. Love the channel, love the content, amazing work..Nice 1 👍👍👍
What a result getting in running Rob. Sounds lovely and seems to drive nice too, albeit a few runs up and down the yard. Looking forward to this one. It'll be a gem when you and Chris are finished with it. 👍
So happy for you Rob. Felt ecstatic with you when it fired up. When it was smoking I thought bore scoring, but that problem was on the 3.4/3.6. But it cleared. Great. Looking forward to the up and coming videos.
After sitting for so long it would have been advisable to pull the plugs and spray some lubricant into the bores to prevent scoring from no oil on the bores or from any corrosion that may have occurred. Just a bit more preventative maintenance, especially with such a low mileage engine.
What a result. It maybe irrelevant to yours but a lot of ninety’s cars need to relearn the electric window cycle. If it’s a 2 stage switch, press auto down. When the window fully opens press and hold down for 5 seconds and repeat on the way up, holding up. The ecu should relearn the position.
It could be the valve stem oil seals. There is a dry sump the oil is pumped to a tank in the front. Sitting for years, oil could make its way back to the sump, flooding the cam boxes with oil and a little gets past the valve oil seals.
Great find 👏 👍 will be very interesting to see what products you're going to use especially on the interior to bring her back to her glory 🤞🙏 awesome video and many happy returns to Chris on his birthday 🎂 🎉 , i think he might have wished his birthday trip didn't coincide with wonderful and exciting times, well done Rob 💪👌👍🏅🥇🏆
Well done rob you are such a great guy to watch you explain what you are doing you said it was the fual pump and as usual spot on chris would be proud of you when he gets back next holiday is yours rob well done can’t wait for Saturday video 😊
I had a 99 2.5 & I left it for 3 or 4 years, then I stuck a new battery on it, & it started on the first turn, on the old fuel! It was a bit lumpy on it, but it was fine!
Rob - think that you should be ok with the smoke. My Porsche(s) can smoke a bit if left for a while (they’re known for it). Shoulddn’t be anything to worry about. You clean /replace those plugs for peace of mind , but that smok(ing) should abate, then you’ll have a lovely car to clean up. Nice little project/earner. Well done..!
Air oil separator often goes on these , causes them to smoke just like youres they fail because of age usually especially if left ‘garage queens’ fairly easy to change
I sooooo want this motor. I had the exact same car, same colour combination back in 2008 and I’ve always regretted selling it. I’ll be watching this one like a hawk when it goes up for sale. Well done mate - another awesome save of a stunning motor and by far one of the best cars I’ve ever owned. Fingers crossed I get it. 🤞
I absolutely love these type of vlogs. These are starting to make good money now, pre pandemic you could pick up a 2.5 for 2 grand or less. Now you have to shell out 3.5k for starting money. This could be a little goldmine ☮️
These will it start videos are fantastic, especially something like a well loved boxster, can't wait to see you iron out all the issues and get it looking spotless again
Put this car back exactly as it should be and keep it between you and Chris pal ,all the best nice touch that one , service the gearbox asap asap run it for a month service it again filter oil both times , you done well rob nice quick work
Looks like you found a gem but please invest in some fogging oil guys. Any engine sat that long could have stuck rings and you could easily damage them cranking it off the starter like that. Some oil or power steering fluid in the whinge overnight and turning over by hand to free it is good practice and could save a few tears! Otherwise great job guys.
Love this Porshe can wait to see the finished product. Interior reminds me of a Golf I once had. Left the car sitting in the street for a few months while overseas - came home and the entire interior was covered in mould - some how moisture had got in.
I've got a 986 Boxster S Tiptronic on an 03 plate and I've rebuilt it. Still got some jobs to do but love the car to bits. People won't be disappointed getting one as a classic investment.
Nearly as big a Yes as the MG Midget! (will tha ever be topped?) This is going to be a great fix and will be fantastic for someone, what a great mileage and basis to start with.
Great result, wonder how much that was, good service, change all the fluids, good service and detailed, going to make a good car for someone 👍. Looking forward to the next video.
Nice one guvnor....to drop into your accent....Anyhoo, I nearly bought one of these myself last year. Ended up with a Mk2 Audi TT convertible, simply because there is more room inside and more crash protection. Love Porsche and I always like they Boxter. If it was me I would be cleaning a lot of that green mould off around the engine cover etc straight away. And the interior mould is horrible. Its incredible it got like that. You might need some anti bacterial stuff in some strong soapy water and leather cleaner galore but it should come up clean. Its a shame about the back window being plastic as well. I would be fitting a glass one or a new hood with a glass one in if there is no other way to do it. Other than that its a great car with just some cleaning and small paint issues to fix...I am tempted to buy it myself if I did not already have a nice convertible....the sound of the engine on a Porsche when its in the middle mounted position is unique too....I would be as excited as you are also...
Very, very good Rob a super purchase. Only concern was your one finger in front of the camera!! then realised you were testing the oil 😚. Just get and do the body work before Chris gets back...see you the weekend.👍
It looked much more like condensation burning off than smoke, particularly once you got it off the truck. A car that’s been sat for 10 years is going to be damp everywhere. Great result Rob. Looking forward to seeing this one progress.
What a fantastic job you did Rob great bit of fault finding and fixing. The best feeling in the world when the engine comes to life, bet Chris was over the moon when he got back from Rome. Have a cold beer to celebrate Rob. 🍷
Not what I was expecting this morning but what a great project 👍🏻 it'll be a lot of work given how long it's sat but get it useable and looking nice, I'm sure you'll shift that no problem 🙂
Smoking is normal on Boxsters that sat for a long time. Usually 10-15 of running clears it right up. If it doesn't then there may be an issue with the engine.
Good evening Rob, great video and everyone is so pleased for you. I think Chris will be well impressed. Thank you for taking their time to upload another video . Ged.
Like a lot of people say Rob, your excitement when a “will it run” runs is superb. The porker looks like a win win for you both, that’s a mouldy gem but soon will be a diamond💎👍👍
I wonder if Chris will let you loose again while he has a trip away? One thing for sure, it's a long time since you have had such a smile after a days work on a new project. Well done Rob and I'm looking forward to the progress reports.
That's a bit of a result, Rob; getting the car to start & seeing the exhaust fumes disappear! Looking forward to seeing how the car looks ,by the time it's ready to go up for sale! 👍🙂

Take a look at the driveshaft/gearbox oil seals. They are susceptible to drying out and weeping if not used for a long time. Lovely motor.

would that cause the horn to beep too much as well? on mine the windows have dropped and won't raise up. replacing the ECU might be the best bet.
Nice find. Windows might need a reset after fitting the new battery. And it’s Tayna for batteries, not Tanya.

YES Rob, good for you mate and Chris. Lovely low miler, love vids like this!
Another great video. Hope Chris enjoyed his weekend. X
Glad it's a runner Rob, probably old fuel smoking as well and maybe slightly sticky rings.
