Crazy really. My parents bought an XR2 brand new in ‘87, I think it was £7500… which was also a pretty big spend considering their house cost £16k 4yrs prior to that.
Please get around to going back and driving it when it’s on the road. It’s such a great sounding car and would be so interesting to see what it’s like. Another lovely family in the video and as ever you know exactly how to draw the best out of them.
Many years ago I worked on a farm, the grandson and his fiance had a 190e 2.5 - 16v Cosworth it was an awesome car, he also owned a VW Caddy Spor(he also had a 911 track car) his mum owned a red M5 (1986). Back then I wasn't old enough to drive, but I did get to be a passenger in the Cosworth, M5 and Caddy Sport on numerous occasions (memories have stayed). Thank you Johnny and the owners in this barn find video.
The outside temperature is shown in the instrument cluster. The gauge in the middle console is a laptimer and can show an avarage speed driving a mile / or a Km. Nothing advanced.
Coupe quattro 20v is a rare thing, I had one a little while back but had to move it on due to a lack of space, I seriously regret letting it go. From Audi's golden era.
In 2002, when these had hit rock bottom, I was driving to Preston to swap my 88 alpina B10 for one of these, both were in the 3-4k range at the time. About 20 mins from the destination, my big end bearings decided to explode! That was a sad day for sure. Incidentally, I swapped the broken alpina for an Audi coupe like the one featured here, but alas not a 20v.
Just to add, my late father purchased a 600SL in two tone green in 1993 from a Mercedes dealer in Bristol for £93K and as standard it didn't come with a stereo.. nothing has changed..
One of my old bosses had some lovely old SLs and what at the time I thought was a 190e with a body kit. It was years before I realised what it actually was. What a great car to own now. Surely rarer than a M3
Amazing car, in the early nineties my grans nextdoor neighbour was a car dealer and he also raced single seaters and he had a 190 cosworth and he took me out in it a few times and believe me he could drive and ever since I have loved the 190 cosworth, thank you dai twice (David Davies).
You’ve got to love these Barn Find episodes - not just for the cars, but for the beautiful characters and their family who have a history with these machines ❤️
Couple of times I came close to buying one of these but the ones I looked at were multi-owner cars that had clearly been caned by one or more of the owners. As a former 2CV owner the gear change was easy enough for me to get my head around. I also came close to buying an Audi S2 quattro, but someone offered me an ST 185 Celica GT4 for a price I couldn't refuse. Still a great looking and sounding car.
K-Jetronic tech here (Ex Saab). Your over thinking it a bit Johnny, they are not that complicated. The Fuel metering Pintle is probably stuck, and the injectors will all be Gummed up. So a fuel system service / mini Resto, with a new pump and it will be good to go.
This car is amazing what a lot of people don’t know that they drive and handle so well🙏 it has real character when you push it,,,,really changes the whole experience amazing car
I worked with a guy who had one of these about 15 years ago, it still looked great but he wanted to restore it. They were just starting to get a rep for being a future classic at the time as opposed to just the knowing nod from people who knew, think Top Gear had featured one around the time as well.
Great video Johnny. One thing though. The 2.5 in not a cossie. The 2.3’s were designed and made by cosworth but the 2.5’s were all built by Mercedes in house.
Those injectors will be blocked solid and the fuel distributor will need rebuilding. I had the same on a DeLorean that sat for over 20 years, they also have the jetronic injection, great show as always Jonny
Nice! I remember when my friends’ mum turned up in a brand new H reg 190D 2.5. They ran that car for years and I think it’s still parked up rotting away on their farm 😢
I ashamed to say I saw the title, thought it must be a Fowwurds and decided to watch it later. Then heard it was a 190E on S&S and that brought it up the schedule!
Thankyou so much for showing this and thanks to the owners for letting us in on it not just the one car but an eclectic gaggle of top cars but the mercedes 190 gets my vote more please johnny😊
Brother had one here in NZ back in the early 90s. I remember sitting in the back of it hurtling around a race circuit while he was being shown the approaches to the corners by the owner of the race car my brother had just purchased. Fun times.
Was apprentice in Mercedes dealer in 93, I loved the SL500 and 600 and the Sec models. Was taken out in the back yard in a 2.5 and was mind boggled with the performance it provided as a 4 cylinder, the length of the gears was especially impressive when the foot is on the floor. dog leg tricky apparently, not unknown to launch one to find out it's in reverse🙄👀
Another great episode perfect Sunday fodder, Lovely car. Lots of lovely cars but lovely expression on the mum when she realised she was being feeling brilliant
What a nice family. So good to see such real ordinary people. It's the reason I watch this channel and others like it. Although I'm neither a Merc or BMW fan( or Subaru for that matter) you absolutely do need to get back there. Those cars have a story x
4:39 Jonny, love the video as always. Got a tiny thing wrong, though - the first model Quattro was called Quattro back in the day. Many generations later people started calling that generation the “Ur Quattro” which translates to “ancient Quattro” or “original Quattro”. Germans also have Adel and Uradel (nobility and ancient nobility) or alt and uralt (old and ancient). Pronunciation is “oor Quattro” (not “you are Quattro”). Kind regards from Berlin, Germany 🇩🇪.
@ Interestingly, some other languages use “ur-“ as well, with the same meaning (Danish, Norwegian and Swedish) and in the Dutch language (“oer ”) it means and is pronounced the same (“oor”). And it seems it made its way into English as well, with the same meaning, e.g. Urzeit or Urmensch.
maaaaate. THIS was my dreamcar for a good many years. I used to first drool over the Ford granada 2.8i Ghia for some years in the black with red stripes color and interior and then this monster turned up. We had a friends father buy one in black and he was an accountant not at ALL interested in cars so god knows how the merc dealer convinced him to buy this thing as it was insanely expensive. One day when my friend got the license to drive his father had already had it like 6 years but WOW the feeling when we drove off in it the first time. Black color with black paint/black leather interior. What a fantastic machine.
Another very enjoyable film great Sunday eve viewing . What an amazing thing to have tucked away in the garage owned since new and in amazing condition ( these were terrible rust buckets at the time and few survived rust free) love the fact it started after a bit and ran didn’t expect this one to be a runner. The owner is a great guy you should try him to come and help on some other ones he just stuck right in and gets on with it!
I recently found out that Audi are still doing it when I repaired a new shape A3. I was incorrectly supplied a LHD mirror cover for the right side of an RHD car and it was bigger, only slightly so not obvious to look at.
Wow blown away with this episode . Just seeing same as my Audi 90 5CYL.. 20V AGAIN . I decated mine and straight piped to back box .sounded amazing . If you go back clean the Audi .❤
Got one of those, about 10 years since I drove mine been restoring it it is in the paint shop at the moment, video inspired me to get it finished, mine is 2.3. Door cards always shrink in the sun and the centre clock is usually a stop watch, exhaust should be a twin outlet pointing down
My dad had a new 190E in mid 80’s. Great car. My cousin and I managed to put in on its roof on a gravel road. Needed a new roof and other bit and pieces, but ran great after that
Great collection of cars. Love the story about the void warranty. Brilliant that they really didn’t need to worry about that. The reliability came through for them by the sounds of it 😎
Great video once again! One of my old bosses had a series of 190’s back in the day and would have loved one of those. I’m sure you’ll be back there for more fun times! 😊
As a classic Mercedes owner, (W124 320ce Coupe), i don't understand why people leave their classic cars to gather dust, i believe it does more harm, mine is used whenever i can, i love it
Great vid, Jonny. The opening scene instantly reminded me of "...basically in Nottingham" when you mentioned where you were. Those that know, know....!
These have always been a Hero car for me, so much cooler than the M cars as they're rarer and much more 'Sleeper'. especially the early ones like this is. Really good to hear that it's had a life and will continue to, even cleaned up nicely!
That's a cool car, and it looks very well. About the side mirrors: it wasn't the only car that had different size mirrors. My 1978 Opel Ascona B also had that. The passenger side mirror was bigger than the drivers side mirror.
I'd personally like to congratulate Rob on his excellent choice of cars! Some absolute beauties there......apart from the RR Sport 😁. Wonderful automotive taste.
My dad had an Audi 90 Quattro Sport 20v. Bought new on a H plate. Amazing car. There were not many about at the time. When my dad ordered it, the salesman said his would be the third in the country.
Please do a video on the Audi Quattro Coupe. I had one back in the day and then traded up to a S2 Coupe. Great cars and well worth reminiscing over. I also remember the B&K Thomas Mercedes dealership on Trent Bridge, Nottingham, it's all making me feel a little old.
Great episode as always, thanks Jonny and thanks to the lovely people letting us see the cars - I hope we return for more videos. What I don't understand is why the cars are parked up at 60k or 100k miles if there's no plan to sell them? Are they hoping to hold out longer then sell them when they're more collectible? Otherwise get out and drive them!! Obviously they're not my cars, and these people can do as they please - I just wonder how much joy these cars could bring to their lives yknow
Just something about the 190E 2.5-16, lovely car, merc made some great things back in the day, never understand why a Sierra with a cosworth badge is worth so much money, and an M3, but the Merc always seems forgotten about. Would love to see this fully done and running, but somehow think it may just get put away again for a while.
Hi Jonny. I have a Barn Find for you. One hitch. It’s a Ford Focus ST170, 2004 model. One of 100 released between 02-04. It’s sitting in my carport, 120,000 kilometres. Fully optioned, missing the factory floor mats. The catch is it’s an Australian model and it’s still in Australia 🇦🇺 But you’re welcome!❤
This is literally my dream car, and I strongly believe within the next 10-15 years it will be a 100k+ car. so few were built and when done properly with the correct mods is just the best 80's car you can buy
Great video ! 2 of my favorites of that era are the 190 2 5 16 and the C36 AMG that came after . Please go back and do a follow up drive of that Merc it deserves it! Oh, and the BMWs too!
Even today, those are still a good looking cool car. Boxey maybe compared to modern cars, but stylish none the less. Got chance to drive one back around 2000, bringing it down from Teeside to the Midlands. A Porshe was up for a fight briefly, but he bottled it way before the car I was in was reaching it's peak.
£32k in 1989 is close to £100k today... that was an expensive car back then!
It was very expensive. How many people buy cars of that value outright now?
tomleyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!
Crazy really. My parents bought an XR2 brand new in ‘87, I think it was £7500… which was also a pretty big spend considering their house cost £16k 4yrs prior to that.
@@nolansmith571 yo 😅
£82,268.20 according to the bank of Englands inflation calculator
“Is he filming us?” What a great character!
“ Mavis , you’ve got a 190 Cosworth “ Brilliant ❤️
And the reg plate had, in tiny writing, "Mave's car" (or something similar)!
Shyt old rubbish
I think she replied she didn’t give a stuff about cars, or similar! Good lass.
Great film AGAIN, Jonny.
Feels like this could be the first of a trilogy with the M5 & B10.
Go on! Do it!
That’s got to be one of the greatest garages ever, the E39 B10 is a spectacular example and sat next to an M5 v10 too. Wow
Johny. Your show is actually teaching me to keep hold of the special cars i have rather than sell. Its a duty for the future generations
what"special" car's you got?,a Seat Leon & Ford st definitely not classed as special? ?
@markcozzie dude. Tell me you IQ is zero without telling me your IQ is zero.
Please get around to going back and driving it when it’s on the road. It’s such a great sounding car and would be so interesting to see what it’s like.
Another lovely family in the video and as ever you know exactly how to draw the best out of them.
We'd love to revisit this one.
@@TheLateBrakeShowHope you do. They’re proper, hardworking people, not up themselves.
The 190 is such a handsome car, perfect proportions. Yet again a barn find with properly good people.
One of your best Jonny. You captured this one brilliantly 😎👍
Many years ago I worked on a farm, the grandson and his fiance had a 190e 2.5 - 16v Cosworth it was an awesome car, he also owned a VW Caddy Spor(he also had a 911 track car) his mum owned a red M5 (1986). That VDO gauge is the lap timer, and the outside temperature. The screen is likely dead, but there's a repair kit available, which is an easy fix.
The outside temperature is shown in the instrument cluster. The gauge in the middle console is a laptimer and can show an avarage speed driving a mile / or a Km. Nothing advanced.
love your range rover comment i feel the same jonny
😶
I'll second that.
It will have a blown engine for sure
Coupe quattro 20v is a rare thing, I had one a little while back but had to move it on due to a lack of space, I seriously regret letting it go. From Audi's golden era.

Brilliant. Three "Back in the days" to chalk up, and I couldn't agree more about the Range Rover Sport comment! Thanks Jonny and team TLBS.
In 2002, when these had hit rock bottom, I was driving to Preston to swap my 88 alpina B10 for one of these, both were in the 3-4k range at the time. Jonny, Watching old 5th Gears. You were and are the man.
What a garage and a top collection of motors all in top condition aswell.
Really liked that fella, seemed like a proper geezer.
You're helping to encourage me to clean my own car this afternoon before it rains. Also, thanks for a great barn find!

Who needs Top Gear when we have Jonny and The Late Brake Show team making gems.
I was a teen when these cars came out, a great video and glad to see it started relatively easily.
80’s German saloon car barn find for the win! Great episode.
Amazing to see
I worked with a guy who had one of these about 15 years ago, it still looked great but he wanted to restore it. What a great collection of cars. Tremendous
Stunning 190 2.5. ❤️ When Mercedes had great build quaility!
Thanks for another beauty Jonny! I listen as I workout on Sunday afternoons here in Alberta. I remember Senna winning in that. Hero car
Loved this, the story and the collection, well everything.
Thank you
You never forget your first... and for an 18 year old, this cars acceleration was truly memorable.
"I would ask you about the Range Rover sport but I don't give a...." Perfect!
I've always loved the 190e it was the very first merc i fell in love with the cosworth 190e looks amazing
Great video Jonny. Looked like a fun day out. Lovely cars and family. You’ve got to pop back and drive the Alpine and Cosworth
This year's of touring racing were just the best, Johnny awesome barn find❤❤❤
As a classic Mercedes owner, (W124 320ce Coupe), i don't understand why people leave their classic cars to gather dust, i believe it does more harm, mine is used whenever i can, i love it
being in california, i am envious of the sheer amount of autoerotia. and wet dream instilling petrol powered history access is bestowed .
Great vid, Jonny. The opening scene instantly reminded me of "...basically in Nottingham" when you mentioned where you were. Those that know, know....!
Keep on discovering these hidden gems mate. Great show👍
I had one me back in early 90s the build quality was exceptional
OMG. This barn is holy ground for car enthusiasts...
These have always been a Hero car for me, so much cooler than the M cars as they're rarer and much more 'Sleeper'. especially the early ones like this is. Really good to hear that it's had a life and will continue to, even cleaned up nicely!
They're hardly sleeper with the body kit and badging, they stood out a mile from a standard 190E.
Arguably the best barn find video yet? Mavis is awesome. Yes,a re-visit on this please!!!
What an unreal bunch of tasty German motors, thoroughly enjoyed that video!!!!!
Yes what a collection needs more filming for sure
That's a cool car, and it looks very well. About the side mirrors: it wasn't the only car that had different size mirrors. My 1978 Opel Ascona B also had that. The passenger side mirror was bigger than the drivers side mirror.
Ah wow, Jonny Swirlmarks has proper up'd his car wash game! That was a fantastic wash routine!
Straight in with a “back in the day” -epic
Makes my Sunday watching your videos thanks very much
Best barn find ever if I ever come in to some money Mercedes cosworth im coming for you 💯👏👏👏
190 was the last of the Traditional Well Built Benz, Wonderful cars no matter what Version they are ❤
Always loved that shape. The 2.5 is one for the collection.
I don't like many Mercs, but damn this is a hot looking car.
I knew straight away @1:01 what that car was....... I've always wanted 190e Evo, such a nice looking car even now!!
Just something about the 190E 2.5-16, lovely car, merc made some great things back in the day, never understand why a Sierra with a cosworth badge is worth so much money, and an M3, but the Merc always seems forgotten about. Would love to see this fully done and running, but somehow think it may just get put away again for a while.
Fuel pump relay is under scuttle by battery. It has a 20A fuse on it.
Great BF episode. You definitely have to go back and pull out those other cars! Glad to see @tomleyRC is a fan!
Never expected it to be that much when new, lovely car and car collection they have 👍.
I love the Merc cosy, it really takes me back.

Sounds awesome.
Awesome car, speaking as an owner of 2 sierra cosworths in the 80s I always admired the merc
