What is NonDuality?

  • The term NonDuality is used in two different ways. First is the spiritual sense derived from the Indian tradition of advaita which concerns the absolute essence of all phenomena. Second is the everyday sense of we are all one, transcending differences, etc. Both are valuable leading to greater care and respect. And both can easily become just concepts. We need to have nonduality be a reality in our lives, to embody it, and this comes not through understanding but through consistent practice.

    I really value hearing that “non-dual” by way of Peter’s Advaita definition encompasses the experience that we are separate, yet all is of the same unchanging consciousness. When I have experienced this, I saw the grass, the building, the sky as separate things in existence, yet they were all me, as well. All in existence is made of the same fundamental thing. I could see myself in everything. So Peter’s “not just two” (but also one?) seems closer than “not two”.

    Nonduality is simply not-two...there is no other or separation. Individuals and "me"/"other" are illusions. Nonduality is all there is...it is thought that divides and imagines separation. This does not deny variety/diversity...but only denies separation or otherness.

      @@halcyon2864 The mind does not really exist...mind is just the label for the stream of thoughts. This can cease leaving "no-mind".
      Realisation is not reached through progress in purification or education. That fundamentally is the illusion of separation.
      Regularly ceasing to do is key.

      @@halcyon2864 Ignore thought...don't pay the mind any mind...just attend to the feeling/experiencing of the moment. Being here and now only.

    Thank you Peter for making this, especially the ancient analogy of the clay pots. The way I've come to understand this diversity embedded in non-duality is that Jesus (I see this in Christian terms of the Holy Trinity) is experiencing being me,...and you... and all of us in Divine creation. If I feel sorrow - Jesus experiences my sorrow. If I express love and caring to another - I am expressing that love and caring to Jesus, and Jesus experiences it.
    My meditation practice for experiencing the Higher Oneness basically has to do with my being present there. I choose where to be present - this relative realm of diversity - or the Higher Realm of Oneness, Love, Peace and Holiness which is how I refer to it. I have the choice of where I position myself, what aspect of life I am present it. It is a state of stillness, and through practice, is more detailed then that, but I don't want to make this comment too long. Thanks again. I will check out your website today.

    Thank you Peter. There is a freedom here. It's not the freedom to make ourselves match some notion of perfection. This pot- without the strain or effort to be more or better than this indefinable clay is free to move about - without the conflict of feeling defective or incompetent. Also, diversity of forms can't be the reality because they are constantly changing; the clay that turned to the shape of pots were false appearances... it doesn't matter what pots look like we know it's clay. The appearance isn't the reality; the clay is. And how can the clay of existence be imperfect? This point of view may not help escape the apparent sorrows and difficulties of life, but it ends the delusion that there is someone, some separate individual here that understands and is directing existence. Clay exhibits no observable goal other than expressing itself in unique ways; it's all un-form and seems to disappear at some point. Likewise in nature, no two things appear the exact same. No two bodies, to two trees... no two anything. The Mystery of It!

    I once had a discussion with someone who claimed all human actions are for egoistic reasons and altruism is an illusion. I disagreed, because I 'felt' it wasn't true.
    Knowing what I know now, I could explain my opinion better, if only that person wasn't so obsessed by his own ego and would realise his conviction was (and probably stil is) a result of projection.

    Thanks. I like that you explain the true meaning of words & the terminology. It makes the teaching very clear.
    In Non-duality & the Direct Path I understand a lot of emotions are on behalf of ego & ego activity but I wonder if deep emotions, like depression, are from our essence or is say losing a loved one is grief just a relative experience? Or Does are being grieve?

    • @peter-russell
      @peter-russell  2 роки тому +5

      Yes, a lot come from the ego-mind, i.e. from some story we are telling ourselves. And there are feelings such as joy or awe which arise in direct response to a situation. Grief is also a natural response - other animals seem to experience it. Being does not grieve. But it is aware of the grieving. Such emotions are a natural part of being human.
