Letting Go of Ego - Peter Russell - Allowing the Mind to Relax and Release its Attachments.

  • Letting go is a theme in all spiritual traditions. Holding on they say leads to tension and suffering, which is the opposite of what we really want. Letting go brings inner freedom and peace of mind. What we are letting go of are not the things themselves, but our attachment to them, which is a basically a way of seeing things - a mind set.
The key to letting go is allowing the mind to relax. Rather than trying to get rid of difficult feelings or thoughts, Peter Russell reframes letting go as “letting in” and “letting be.” He applies this to our emotions, and most importantly to the ego. The ego is not some separate part of us, but a mode of thinking we get caught in. Many traditions see ego as an enemy, but it is actually an ally, trying to keep us safe. The problem is that too often the egoic mode of thinking gets triggered when it is not needed and doesn’t serve us. Rather than seeing letting go of ego as some future goal we should strive to achieve, he shows how we can practice letting go of ego in our daily life.
He completes this talk with a meditation practice that helps us step out of our egoic thinking and become more aware of the present moment.

Great talk, Peter. This is exactly how we experience it. Letting go means investigate what it is we are holding on to, mostly it is a story or belief. Inquiry will almost always show that the story or belief is not worth of holding on to, for it is either wrong or incomplete or unsure or a combination of those.. Doing this continually trains the mind and the ego to be more exact, more true in what it thinks and feels. It will soon lead to a gigantic diminishing of the minds activity. Nature does not waste, if the mind notices that stories and generalizations are not followed up by our behavior or beliefs, it will cut down on this waste of energy. We have to teach our mind what we want from it. Which is mostly very little or at most a concise and factual evaluation of the situation right here and now, without elaboratioms and lessons from the past to the future. In most cases our intuition has already taken care of things adequately. We only need a mind that serves us to deal with the situation at hand briefly, and them retreats into the peace of stillness again. The ego is no ennemy, it is a mechanism of the brain that needs the right education and upbringing, like a little child. It can be a good friend and servant. But as its parent, we need to do our job in teaching it and learning it what we value. We need a humble and sering mind, not a drama queen and story teller.

I like your description of ego mind as "tension" or insistence. Good advice on not getting triggered by the ego!

Yes, these are two good ways to recognize when we are caught in ego.

Hello. Peter. I understand you are aware of deep feelings. Is it possible we can talk via email? It’s about what I have felt, and I seek to know if other people also have felt it. I want to know what someone else who understands how deep feeling can go, think about what I have felt. I am young and new to this.
