I think you undersold the animations and subtle charm of Double Dash, as it easily has the most expressive Mario Kart characters, with Wii in second in my opinion.
I love the whole punch/kick mechanic, the taunting, and the animations for when characters are falling off their karts in double dash. Mkwii has the best voice lines imo, and with the right timing they can be either really funny or infuriating to hear. The voice acting combined with the sfx (vehicles honking, mega mushroom and star themes) make mkwii feel so alive.
Jopes’ first few videos made me think “19-year-old woman”. Now I can tell that they’re actually quite a bit younger than that, which makes the quality of their videos all the more impressive.
it's interesting that you put down the smart steering! to me the obvious reason for mario kart's prolonged success is just how easy it is to pick up and play and 8's options make it just that bit stronger on the "you can hand a joycon to your grandma and she'll have fun" scale
I grew up on Double Dash. I love its two-person mechanic, and I've never felt like any other MK game has captured its charm or perfect difficulty level for me. With probably hundreds of hours into it... how did I not know that character selection affected item chances outside of signature items?? Thanks for teaching me something new, and great video!
After playing and getting the night version of the title screen in Super Circuit, it's one of my favorites to just... Play. Once you get a handle on the controls and the strange but surprisingly fun drifting (I say after several hours of playtime), there's a sense of flow in both Super Circuit and SMK that was honestly never replicated in Mario Kart since. Most of what I said applies to SMK as well, but Super Circuit just has the substantially better map design. SMK feels like a war crime in its later cups.
i def agree that MK tour isn't better than the other ones, but i really enjoy the appeal of having weekly ranked tours with 19 random ppl as well as your friends, the character selection is absolutely MASSIVE and for a mobile games it has very few things blocked by a paywall. You can't play all the tracks anytime you want but I feel that helps keep it a fresh game for me bc every week there will always be something different. In terms of controls it's not my favorite but there are ways in the settings to make it a lot easier, I think often times its just a massive curve in how the controls of MK usually work. Really helps to have some friends who also play it bc the Multiplayer mode is actually reallllly competitive and is very easy to match up with friends. Great video!
I wanna mention about Super Mario Kart; while there’s not really much point in drifting, as opposed to hopping around turns, Drifts kind of- ‘drag the kart’ around the turn and you’ll notice your kart is going much faster once you correct yourself after the turn. It’s weird, and so is my explanation, but that’s what I found, Fantastic vid as always! Keep it up, I love listening to your honest opinions
Yeah it's kind of amazing seeing what speedrunners can do with the drift in SMK It's an advanced technique to be sure, but drifting is a valuable skill in that game
That is not correct. The characters drift differently. Those with small top speed drift great and allow you to turn faster without slipping. It's balancing acceleration top speed and turning/drifting. You are correct that it seems to accelerate one little bit in the end when you straighten but not enough to allow you to pass.
I like to imagine that I'm just going on a cruise when I play these games. That's what makes it fun for me. I also imagine that each track is connected even if it makes no sense.
IMO, Mariokart is so popular because of its beginner friendly nature. Even people who don't play video games very much still understand how it works just from the premise of driving, yet it doesn't put off the people who want to get good at it.
I've been using my 3ds more lately and have fell in love with mario kart 7 again. It's a shame that a lot of 7's innovation gets attached to 8 in people minds because it's the next console game. Great vid!
1:22 Drifting in Super Mario Kart absolutely serves a purpose, and for more than just making sharp-turns ; It makes you go FASTER! If you maintain your momentum AFTER successfully doing a drift (approach your turn holding R/L without losing speed and letting go of your shoulder button successfully) your top speed will begin to increase. I get that it isn't the most obvious thing in the world since you don't get any graphical effects, but you will notice your kart's engine will start to sound higher-pitched to indicate you've done it successfully! It makes SMK one of the most momentum-based, skill-intensive games in the whole series! Templar Animated has an entire video breaking down how it works. I'd go check him out for a better understanding of how the SNES Mario Kart works.
Mario Kart Tour is obviously not on the same level as the console versions, but it's not as bad as you make it look. Landscape mode is much better than the default portrait mode and it allows for multi touch controls. So you can use items and drift at the same time for example.
Thank you for acknowledging the original Mario Kart 8! It's the most underrated game in the series imo- at least people don't act like Super Circuit doesn't even exist..
Every Mario Kart game is great, but here is my ranking (only mainline): 1. Mario Kart Tour 2. Mario Kart 8 3. Mario Kart Wii 4. Mario Kart 7 5. Mario Kart: Double Dash 6. Mario Kart DS 7. Mario Kart 64 8. Mario Kart: Super Circuit 9. Super Mario Kart
I like it how you just put Mario on a ice rink 😂. Also I think we’re the same age seeing as my voice got deep around when your voice got deeper which is cool.
This is a very well done video and from the looks of it, you're on a roll here, so congratulations. Since you're in the Mario Kart lane right now, I suggest an idea: make a video about Mario Kart clones and compare them with the Mario Kart games that were released around their respective time. When I was a kid and played Diddy Kong Racing, I totally forgot about Mario Kart 64. But I think most kart games don't even come close to the Mario Kart franchise games. There's a good amount of them, so maybe you could make two videos out of that theme. It would still be fun to listen to your reviews because you're really good at explaining how the game feels when you play it. Good luck with your channel.
1:21 Super mario kart DOES have miniturbo. You have to do an almost 180° turn while drifting, like super circuit. Theres no visual effects of the miniturbo, but if you oay attention at the engine sound you will notice it gets in a higher pitch for half a second.

Great video! Funnily if you had said "I'm trying to drift" in '92 while playing Mario Kart no one would have known what you were talking about. Like, we didn't even know what drifting was as a concept, much less in Mario Kart.
I really wish they'd make another Mario Kart Double Dash game. Playing Co-op was so fun especially if your partner isn't the best or dislikes driving. Another thing you forgot to mention about DD is that your partner can hit other players karts and steal their items or push someone away when playing Co-op. It's a nice way to not be defenseless.
Super Mario Kart honestly has pretty tight drifting, it's just very non-conventional and different to other games in the series. You have to hop into your drift, turn, and then hopping again really quick at the angle you're aiming for will let you kill almost all your sideways momentum, allowing you to make very sharp cuts. It's a bit unintuitive at first, but feels pretty good once you get it down.
All of the Mario kart games are really good, and most of them bring back memories. From super circuit, which I found a copy of on a trip, to ds, my favorite, to 7, my first Mario kart game, all the way 8dx. All bangers.
It’s amazing watching people play the first MK after having grown up with the later ones. I grew up playing that one. We used to crush that game. We had no clue it could be better. The drifting was what made it possible!
1. great video 2. Loved the "of course I spent the next hour or so drawing my youtube icon on it" 3. I always wonder if UA-cam still exists in say a hundred years will people talk about "well this video finally has 40k likes, I wonder if the creator will do the follow up video now."
the first wave of mario kart 8 did give off the clay feeling, however that first wave was basically the only wave to do that. The newest wave (4 at the time im commenting this) looks cleaaaan asf, sun rays, reflective water puddles, dynamic lighting and rough yet clean looking roads, its just sick.
Super Mario Kart actually does have mini-turbo, hold down (L or R) and (right or left) and (accelerate) for at least 74 frames to charge it up. There is no second level of mini-turbo or weaker version of it, it's all or nothing. There is no animation associated to the charging of the Mini-Turbo, but during the release the kart animation stops and the engine revs up. Mario Kart Tour has missions in the form of bonus challenges, it brings back special items for each character as well
The secret to SNES Super Mario Kart isn't drifting, It's tight turns while bunny hopping. It's much different than later games, so it's understandable that you had troubles with it.
0:40 I played that on Windows 7 via SNES9x. So fun! Runs at 60 fps, no video or audio glitches and no other problems. I played at Time Trial with Toad and it's just fun! The graphics and soundtrack is just high quality!
I've only played Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart DS, Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart Tour. Alot of the games I haven't played seemed very nice! My Ranking: MKT, MK8, MKDS, and SMK. This video was quite nice too.
Cool video I enjoyed the explanation of the mechanics because I didn't play most of these games (I started with Wii as well) and I feel I understand each game better now.
3:05 Smart steering allows that, but really has so many setbacks. It makes you so slow, you have to be in a mushroom to be normal speed. You can’t take most shortcuts. You get ruined by certain items.
one of the things i always loved the most about double dash and kart wii was most deff how chaotic the game got due to all those unique items like mega mushroom, pow block, and da specials like giant banana and bowser shell, even the yoshi/birdo eggs with chance of star drop- its honestly a bit of a shame martyo kart 8 deluxe doesn't quite live up to the chaos of those 2 games items, cuz those were all super fun to mess around with- but it still deff fun without a doubt
I think with all the Mario Games that i can remember i would have to say that the joyous behavior in the game like it portrays Mario and the others having fun in all the games even when they are trying to rescue the princess.
I'm glad you gave each game a chance by making sure you understood the mechanics before moving onto the next. The Mario Kart games really shine once you get into time trials and start learning advanced techniques (such as snaking in DS and delay drifting in 7). By the way, if you're willing to mod your Wii you can get it to run the first two arcade games. The drifting there is .... weird, but it's fun listening to the announcer commenting on the race.
I had this video just pop up, and it's such a nice retrospective of the Mario Kart franchise! My first console as a kid was a N64, but my first Mario Kart was Double Dash, which I have such fond memories of playing. Just wanted to say that your editing is absolutely wonderful as well as your script writing and confidence talking on camera!
Great video and scripting on this, you did a banger job. As one thing i'd like to add on to this, mario kart 8 deluxe also added the ability to hold 2 items and the double item box which the wii u version of mario kart 8 didn't have. Somebody most likely mentioned this already, but i didn't find the comment when filtering for it. Aside from that this was truthfully a great video

Somehow i missed your video, great to see another one! I love mk8d (tho its the only mk game i played) because its pretty much customisable in almost everything, the music is great and its just fun! Keep the good work dude, you deserve every sub
actually SMK has mini-turbos, this is not evident in the game but it works a little similar to later games, it's called NBT technique you can look for videos teaching this technique here on youtube
Bro played the second worst cup in MKds and said it was extremely fun. Pretty sure this dude's mind will literally shatter if we were to play the Special Cup
you can turn smart steering off in mario kart tour from the options menu in the top right corner there's also missions the game is nowhere close to the console releases, but it isn't bad (as something to play in class while listening to a lecture so I don't have to pay attention to the other people in the classroom, weirdly enough i listen with better focus when i play mobile games)
I haven't mentioned this in a video yet, but If you want to Join my discord server you can do so using this link (13+): discord.gg/NTMMMBqRxs

Yeah I agree. I handed my dad a joycon and he outclassed me on a couple of rides.
I grew up on MK7 and Wii. I now have MK8D though since my mom gifted me it after a messy divorce.
What did you think of each game's physics? What felt the most slippery and what struck you as having the best controls?
Wiggler was my fave character in MK7 as he got angry when hit was a really nice detail. Hope the last few MK8D DLC Waves brings him back.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who is pining for wigglers return.
There were characters leaked but i wont say wich ones. Wiggler has a shot
well guess what
The dlc wave brought him back

Yeah I’m confused about that, I’ve been playing for 21 years and it’s confused me on how there is 3 different titles (Day, Sunset/Rise & Night)

It has to be the drifting. Mario kart without the power ups works, with different stages it can work, but without drifting the game feels lifeless

Subscribed when you had like 3k
now you're over 50k... congratulations man, you deserve it
3:31 The blue shell was new in Mario Kart 64
Okay but RC cars on an ice rink is a bomber idea!
He’s growing up :0😅
(I don’t mean this in a bad way cause it happens to literally everyone, but ur voice has got so much deeper than from old vids, and it caught me by surprise for a sec😅
Nice job dude! Can’t wait to see more content from you!
Puberty hits hard lmao
You just made me remember the missions in Mario Kart ds ! It was a ton of fun for me but i completely forgot it even existed 😅 so thank you !
I can't believe this dude forgot the arcade games; they're actually pretty underrated.
it could be that he dosent have access to the games
@@imperium1707 That's probably true; these games are not easy to come by.
Mario Kart 7 was my first ever Mario game and I used to grind that game so much
THIS IS POTENTIAL. Good job Jopes 👏
Thank you for playing threw all the Mario karts, I was wondering what Mario karts im missing AND IM ONLY MISSING LIVE HOME
My mans getting older already! Keep up the great content fam
Somehow i missed your video, great to see another one!
I love mk8d (tho its the only mk game i played) because its pretty much customisable in almost everything, the music is great and its just fun!
Keep the good work dude, you deserve every sub
Great video man, your channel is massively underrated
actually SMK has mini-turbos, this is not evident in the game but it works a little similar to later games, it's called NBT technique you can look for videos teaching this technique here on youtube
I swear this channel is criminally underrated. Keep up the good work @Jopes
That guy was breaking in the video to avoid getting hit by the blue shell. If someone is very close to 2nd this works every time.
"You can customize your kart's symbol, so I did what anyone would do."
You drew a pe-
"I drew my logo."
Logo, right, that was what I was going to say.
Bro played the second worst cup in MKds and said it was extremely fun.
Pretty sure this dude's mind will literally shatter if we were to play the Special Cup
you can turn smart steering off in mario kart tour from the options menu in the top right corner
there's also missions
the game is nowhere close to the console releases, but it isn't bad (as something to play in class while listening to a lecture so I don't have to pay attention to the other people in the classroom, weirdly enough i listen with better focus when i play mobile games)
