My 20 gauge A-5 was given to me at the age of eleven. 58 years ago. I changed the magazine spring last year. Has never let me down and I cherish this piece.
Even the engraving on the current Ultimate isn't as nice as those old Belgium A5s. You can still get one of those in pretty good shape for about the same price as the MSRP on these new ones.
My 16 is a single shot that my dad gave me (and I am in my 60s now). You have to be good on the first (only) shot. This Browning looks great. Thank you, Steve, for the review.
Purchased a 12 gauge A5 hunter in 2018, shot collegiate clays and continue to compete in NSCA with the gun. Over 50k registered targets and who knows how many more in practice with any malfunctions typically being ammo related. It will not run sub 1200 1 ounce loads 100% reliably but I have never had a malfunction with 9/8ths 1200’s
I inherited my dad’s Franchii AL48 12 ga., essentially a Browning A5 made under license, from 1960. The gun sat in a gun bag untouched since 1978 - about 45 years. I took it out to the range a few months ago and it ran 25 rounds of #00 buckshot flawlessly. I’d say the A5 design is one of great quality in my opinion.
I @mcm542 I believe you are reviewing the SBE3. IT shoots high and to the left, even after you change shims. 28guage on the whole are great over pointing dogs. Kill pheasants at reasonable distances. Beretta A400 upland mag 28guage is suppose to be 60/40 and shoots at point of aim. You don't have the Beretta A400 28guage upland mag do you?
For clays, grouse, quail and woodcock it’s awesome. I struggled with taking down ducks. There’s not many non toxic shot options for the 28ga at the moment. If you have a smaller build you’ll love it but my 180 6’2” friend found it to be too light and was a little short for him.
I bought a 12 when the new style came out. When it gets cold, down around zero degrees, the bolts runs comically slow but it always go bang. Never had an issue. Very excited about the 20
I bought a 12 ga A5 Wicked Wing last weekend, went for a round of sporting clays and it did not cycle target loads at all (1 1/8 oz 1200 fps). I cleaned it well and I will try to break it in this weekend with more powerful stuff
I dont know why all manufacturers have gone to inertia actions. I like gas guns. I have 2 remington 1100's and an old browning belgium made A5. They are reliable to a fault....but i do clean them regularly
I have the "new" Sweet Sixteen...absolutely LOVE that thing. Took it Pheasant hunting the past 2 seasons...absolutely handles like a dream, super light, and its a 16 gauge, and that's just plain cool when you are downing Ringnecks! I may have to buy the new 20 gauge just because!
I have the Miroku 20 model in beautiful condition. Weighs 7.2 lbs which I find perfect. My Citori 20 over under is 6.4 lbs. Both guns are beautiful. No issues with moving the rounds ever but I also don’t shoot it upside down over my head either. Great investment too.
I love my Kinematic Drive Sweet 16's , can't wait to add a 20 gauge to the fold. Great review as always. The only thing that I wish Browning would replace is their bolt release button, at least make it match the quality of the rest of the gun. I'll add that the 16's perform much better than any of the 12's that I owner with 3.5 inch chambers, can't wait to see what the 20 will do.
I have the 12 and sweet 16 just like that 20ga. No issues whatsoever. I've had the 12ga for about 8 years and the sweat 16 about 3 years. If the 20ga is as good, as it should be, they are great guns. Looking forward to getting the 20ga. Thanks for the reviews.
Have over 100 days in the field pheasant hunting the past 2 seasons with my A5 Sweet 16 Ultimate. Absolutely no issues, and love the (light)weight for all day carry. Understand the 20 gauge is an ounce lighter than the 16 which won't be a noticeable difference, but I'm sure it will be a pleasure to carry. Waiting to see what other A5 20 gauge versions Browning comes up with over the next couple years before making a purchase. On another note....not a fan of the 'lightning' grip A5 model, as it puts my hand in awkward position for consistently operating the safety on flushing birds.
Have two A5s in 12ga, one in Mossy Oak and the other in Maple. The camp gun is used for hunting mostly turkey, the Maple I bought well just because it was Maple. Both guns have run flawlessly and are great shooters. Will be getting the 20ga after watching this. Thanks for the video.
On my A5 Sweet 16 - modern version - I found that I needed to increase the drop using two spacers. 1/8" straight drop, plus the spacer with another 1/8" drop plus cast off. I had trouble hitting reliably until I did that.
I picked up a Belgian light 20 a5 this winter and I cannot wait to grouse hunt. I agree it’s a very “whippy” gun compared to my other shotguns but I feel after a little practice it will be a lot of fun. Love my brownings
I love the twenty gauge! I have many and am always in the market for a new one! A Browning too! Awesome, I’d like to have the twelve gauge and the twenty as a matching pair!
My buddy has an A5, beautiful shotgun but he never cleans it because he says it's too confusing. He was having issues until I showed him how to field strip, clean and lube.
@@michaeldelrossi4487 seen one go for $10k on gunbroker awhile back but this one my grandfather won in 64 or 65 I think it was in a raffle and he never shot it or put it together the picture that got put in the paper he had stock in one had and forearm in the other they took the picture and he put it back in it’s box and never did anything with it
As always Steve, quality vid. Would love to see the Weatherby Orion SxS. Just may give the CZ Sharptail SxS a run for the money. Just a thought. Stay Target Focused !!
I don't know if you still have that 16 gauge A5 I seen in a previous video, but would love to see a 12 versus 16 versus 20 gauge, or just a 16 versus 20 gauge. I am a huge 16 gauge fan, and that's all from experience hunting and clay shooting. I have had terrible success with all four of my 20 gauge shotguns for hunting, with random shot pellets always hitting where I don't want it to. I very rarely have this issue with 16 gauge, and when I do, it was my fault. 16 gauge like Paul Harrell said in a recent interview, IS NOT a down step from 12 gauge, and I can also vouche for that. I have only crippled a bird twice with my 16 gauge, done it many times with a 20 gauge, and it's a 60/40 for a .410. Had great success with my new 28 gauge, but never cared for 12 gauge to be honest. I always find 12 and 20 to be far too overrated. They are good, but 10, 16 and 28 gauges are perfected.
I really like how the host gently pokes fun at Browning's slick marketing. Browning is very good at marketing and image, but far less capable of actually manufacturing shotguns and getting them into gun stores so that we customers who are willing to pay $$$$ can handle and shoulder them and make an informed decision. For this very A5, Reeds and other online gun dealers require you to pay the nearly $2,000 up front without ever having been able to inspect the gun for fit, finish, and feel. What a strange time we're in.
I have the A5 wicked Wing for the past 5 years. I have trouble with it. Cycling light loads, ( even heavy loads untell I got the improved bolt and extractor). It,s Currently sitting at Browning for repairs. I've tried many different brands of ammo, just does not like to cycle light loads and I am using the three dram 1 and 1/8th loads as per manufacturer recommendations.😢😢. Hopefully they find out what's wrong with it. Otherwise I may go to the A400.
Browning A5 20 gauge vs Benelli Ethos (prefer Upland Performance Shop) 20 gauge vs Franchi Affinity Elite Upland 20 gauge in the SOSA test head to head.
Bought a Wicked Wing A5 12 ga, the bolt failed to lock back after less than 50 rounds. Sent in back for repair. First goose shoot it failed to cycle. Sold it.
Looks like a great upland hunting gun. Just a quick question when your shooting clays do you want to mount the gun after the clay is in the air or have it mounted and wait for I?
What choke were you using for your A5 20-gauge test? Please do some patterning tests using Trulock extended chokes in A5 Sweet 16 compared to Browning factory chokes.
could you please look in the box for the warranty, I bought a Maxus Hunter several years ago had problems right away and found out NO WARRANTY they told me to send it to them and they would take a look at it maybe they would fix or charge me. I have the A5 Sweet 16. Like you had in your review of that gun I have had issues with the gun cycling. Sent it to Browning who sent it back no better or maybe worse with no explanation of what they did or did not do to it. I finally got it functional by running the bolt almost dry and making sure the magazine plug is not binding the magazine spring at all. I love hunting with the gun, but it has been frustrating. I would like to see you do a comparison on the 16 ga and 20 ga in the future with guns bought off the shelf, not provided by Browning.
I had a few issues with the shells feeding from the magazine tube with my 16 gauge. I took out the spring and shell follower and cleaned the tube. It was very dirty from the factory. Made a huge difference. Feeding issues went away and the speed loading worked smoother too. Maybe your magazine tube is dirty also?
I shoot skeet with three-quarter ounce light loads in my 1995 A5 light 20 And it is incredibly reliable (I DID get a nice one from Art’s Gun Shop) not many 20 semis will cycle on 3/4 oz. i’d be curious if the new A5 will run them.
Hey Steve I am a big fan of you and your brother i am a trick shooter to i love it. You and your brother are the best in the show busyness. I am trying to get started in trick shooting and thinking about getting a UA-cam channel first to get out there. Do you guys have any advice that you can share with me on this it would be greatly appreciated.
This makes me sick. I got rid of an old 85 in excellent shape for a little less than the price of a Glock 19 and bought a Glock 19 that got taken from me by the police two weeks later before I ever fired a shot through it while I was fishing. I had it in and IWB holster with my shirt tucked behind it and the neighbor of the lady who gave me permission to fish her pond called me up to his property and when I got out of the kayak he seen that I had a gun and called the police and told them I was concealed carrying. I had cross words with him before that which is why he lied. BTW I much prefer a single bead over that second ivory bead
My Montefeltro 20 started stovepiping light loads. I put the heavy recoil spring in the stock and now it’s great with hunting loads but won’t cycle target loads. I still love it but I trust my A5 more.
The A5 speed loading feature is a copy from the Breda Xanthos and Chiron which will reliably cycle 24 gram shells and heavier at a fraction of the cost of this A5. Did Breda have a hand in this guns development?
My 20 gauge A-5 was given to me at the age of eleven. 58 years ago. I changed the magazine spring last year. Has never let me down and I cherish this piece.
I have an original Auto 5 that works great. The new one I had not.
A comparison with Ethos 20 would be a great review!
Browning needs to do a retro A5 with the old school engraving like the light 12 & 20 Belgium Auto 5’s
Ohh yes 👍 with two barrels, field and slug.
Ain’t nothing like the old A5s in appearance and function and craftsmanship plus they shot great
Even the engraving on the current Ultimate isn't as nice as those old Belgium A5s. You can still get one of those in pretty good shape for about the same price as the MSRP on these new ones.
I prefer a brass or ivory front bead
I have 2 an A-5 12ga and they have been great. I have duck hunted with one for year. Low maintenance and goes bang evertime.
My 16 is a single shot that my dad gave me (and I am in my 60s now). You have to be good on the first (only) shot. This Browning looks great. Thank you, Steve, for the review.
Fix your friction rings appropriately and it shouldn't be a single shot
Okay browning hurry up and make the wicked wing a5 20 gauge😍
Have the several A5 in 12 and 16 no issues with either!
I’ll stick with my 20 gauge rem 1100
Carried a Remington 1100 for 40 years just switched to a used franchi AL 48 at 5.5 # iam getting old.😊
A test between 20ga patterns would be a cool and informative video!
