Holy smokes! I was absolutely flummoxed trying to get my Farmall H to start to only hear a slight grind. Hours of troubleshooting later I find this video and less than 5 minutes later my Farmall fired right up. Thank you so much!
A quicker way to unstuck a starter is to put the tractor in 5th gear and rock the tractor back and forth until it un jams. I've done it hundreds of times and it works every time.
THANK-YOU! Excellent... saved me a lot of grief... I appreciate your information. BTW- My '41 M starter has only two bolts. I followed the same process...loosened both bolts enough to move the starter back 3/4-inch, shook it around, re installed the starter, and Voila'! Perfect. Now I can spread the manure.
Ive been there & done that many times. If you ever have the tractor apart you can take the ring gear off the flywheel and turn it around so the not worn side is facing the starter. Decades ago. I had a H that wasnt running and overhauled the engine. And afterward getting fire and gas it would not hit a lick. My wife Debbie came out and was watching. She said Randall the fan is turning backwards! Shure enough it was turning backwards. I found a hand crank and it started right up. What I had done was build a starter from parts. And had a Moline armature and field coils and a Farmall nose! If it had of been a Farmall starter drive spinning the wrong way it wouldnt ever have engaged the flywheel.
When this happens you can’t turn the engine we tried a hand crank, pulling it with a tractor and a few other ways. The first time I thought a rod locked up till I pulled the starter now I’ve had three tractors do it and two of them have new starters

No problem glad I could help

I’ve tried that on this one and had no luck it locks up tight with no movement
But I bet it works if it will move a little
rust yup,you really need to get it rocking. I've never had it not work.
Thanks for the information. I'm restoring my 46 M and was thinking of adding live hydrualics. Now I will.
It’s much nicer with them
THANK-YOU!

That’s funny I never thought about starter parts being interchangeable like that on tractors I have done some of that on sae bell housings
Is there an inspection hole on the other side that you may be able to stick in a screwdriver and turn the flywheel to release the starter?

How about a cold start with the hand crank?
Will do
Is there a way to start that tractor by hand?
There is a hand crank but it is damaged on that tractor if you look at my farming video part 1 I hand crank my M at the beginning
Carry a curved wrench and it get behind there much better at the last bolt.
Definitely
