3 years ago I took the 2020 Formula 1 grid, and wound back the clock 7 years to see what they were up to. Now it's 2023, and we're doing it all again. From world title pushes, go karting, to GP2, 3 and F4. Let's talk about it.

Might just give it a go. Been tempted for a while ngl
Probably 7 years younger. Idk I'm not a physicist
Big brain
Never thought of that
I am a physicist but I’m not quite sure sorry
Wow the more you know
It’s literally rocket science
Man Max coming in at 17 years old is just mind boggling. I need to get my life in order
He'd already driven an entire season, it's mad.
Imagine him retiring at more than twice the age he syarted
@@DLR_SC This is why Fernando Alonso is the best rookie of 2023 💯💯
He had daddy’s money tho. Something i and you probably don’t have and he has an easier career than most I wanna opt for aviation with out daddy’s money it’s hard
@@ChrisC7498_no doubt he is the best skilled rookie
How dare you make me realize that 2016 is already 7 years ago-
You're welcome. x
Ikr
We're closer to 2040 than to 2000
It’s mad that Verstappen was just about to get into Redbull 7 years ago when he’s still so young.
The years just don't make sense
He's the one job offers refer to when they put 'must have 5 yrs experience, must be a baby'
It's also weird to realize that both Gasly and Albon, who came in as unexperienced teammates to a Verstappen who was already an established RBR driver, are 1,5 years older.
he was the youngest driver of all time
Time passes and Verstappen's history becomes more insane. 7 years ago, already in F1, and younger than everyone else when they entered F1. Heck, F2's Theo Pouchaire(the supposed next golden child) is already older than 16's Verstappen and didn't even make it to F1 yet.
It's mad eh. 17 is young for an F2 Driver rn, let alone F1
They made it 18+ to enter f1 now.
I find it hilarious that Nyck was the same age 7 years ago as his current fellow rookies...
Mad eh
Yuki’s move between categories is really fast, the fact he succeeded so quickly after debuting in those feeder series shows his raw talent! 2016 was the year he caught Satoru Nakajima’s attention, which helped him stay in professional racing 😊
7 years ago Fernando Alsonso was in GP2 😂 sort of
I see what you did there 😅
Although tbh the gp2 engine statement was made in Suzuka 2015
@@Christzo18 the car still was a tractor though
Who would’ve thought in the video 3 years ago that this video wouldn’t have Ricciardo in it
Mad eh
Yes, fast forward three months and Dani Ric is back on the grid so should have been included. 2016 was one fantastic world title competition and Dani R finishing P3 well ahead of Max V.
Would love to see a kinda reverse version of this, like where are the drivers of 2010 now? Would be cool to see after this video was a banger
Appreciate it Lemur!
there's a video of Peter Brook about it
Kubica managed a p2 in lmp2 this year
But man said it Himself that his life after the accident is just a little extra bit of a movie after the credits
Hey @Tommo would it be interesting to have a reverse video of this about what some of the drivers have been up to since leaving F1 (kimi, rosberg, kuyviat etc)
Sound idea that 👍
Kuyviat 💀
Its crazy Lando is only a year older than Oscar
Its crazy how young Max was coming in to F1!
Same age as Ollie Bearman is now, the youngest driver in F2. 😅
13:36 It was Bottas 4th season in F1 (2013,2014,2015,2016) not many people remember, but he even finished P3 in 2013 Canadian GP Qualificiation
True true true
I can't believe nico hulkenburg became a world champion with mercedes before retiring in 2016 and the guy doesn't even have any podiums
Iconic
Okay what I'm about to say is with Regards to the Lance Stroll section. Honestly, I feel like Prema tax is an unfair excuse to use. That's literally like saying Charles Leclerc, Esteban Ocon, Pierre Gasly and Oscar Piastri (sorry if I've missed anyone else) only won their respective titles because they were in Prema. If anything, not performing or not winning a title with them should also be a forefront factor in degrading a driver's résumé. I don't like to do that, especially after watching your The Last Lap podcast with FNG and Alex Jacques and considering all aspiring f1 drivers have had to CTRL ALT DELETE their childhoods. However we need to have some level of equality. So if we're going to say Lance won on Prema tax, then so did everyone I mentioned earlier and maybe more. Or we add Lance to the list of hyped feeder series champions, especially those that won their titles with Prema Racing
On the face of it, that may seem harsh. But I've heard many rumours from many different sources that there was a lot more to Lance's junior career than meets the eye. From completely fresh components after every session, extra testing, etc etc. It's all hearsay, but there's no smoke without fire IMO. 🤷♂️
@@TommoOnUA-cam Please elaborate
@@TommoOnUA-cam
Don't subscribe to hearsay and rumors, we might as well watch sky sports instead at that point.
Mental that max will forever have that record of being the youngest and done so well at the time too 🤯
This video was incredibly informative and fun to watch! Love these, can't wait for the next one in a few years!
Much appreciated pal! 🙌
Reversal? Didnt know you watch Car videos.
Ga pokemon vangen. 😊
Lando is the 4th youngest driver on the grid. That is insane to think about
minton must be the channel mascot. Always wanting to get in somewhere. I absolutely love it. I absolutely love your videos also Tommo. Always find them so interesting. Keep it up mate.

2016 was already 7 years ago? wow
that was the year when i started watching f1
Time flies when you're binging TommOCONtent
Always love these types of videos, keep it up my guy!
Much appreciated Matsunochi 🙌
Really puts into perspective how little experience Yuki has had before going to F1 and people still wanna write him off lmao.
Yuki definitely a genius
His rise has been so impressive when you really think about it
TOMMO WE NEED MORE VIDEOS, need more f1 content during this break
Funny that the 2020 video got rerecommended to me yesterday. I was thinking that was a great video idea glad to see you agree!
🙏🙏🙏
One thing you forgot the mention was that Esteban Ocon was in DTM in 2016
I did forget this :(
This was a great video, really interesting. I've been watching F1 from way before 2016...and you are right, I had completely forgotten that Kmag drove for Renault!
Much appreciated Chris!
I swear yesterday that previous video showed on my yt page and I started wondering if you will do another one. Thank You!
Called it
This retrospective list pretty much seals all hope of getting my son into motorsport.

I was here for the last one, nice Tommo,
Plus best 'Botwel ow warra' (bottle of water) meme said unironically and authenticly I've heard this year
WOOOORRRRAAAAA
I remeber that my karting mechanic from 2013-2014 was working for Oscar Piastri back in 2016. Crazy how fast time passes by.
I still can’t believe that 2016 was 7 years ago! 7 years! That’s insane
Great video, good text design, so it's noticeable and interesting to read! Thanks
Thank you Arturs 🙌
I'll never forget KMag in Renault just for Spa that year where his headrest yeeted itself off after his massive crash
Sketchy one that
Oscar looks so young it’s so interesting and it makes me feel so old ahhhhh
He still looks 12 tbf
@@TommoOnUA-cam Well your not wrong but he acts more mature than his team mate but that's just my opinion

Great vid nonetheless :)
I’m sorry but that editing at the start of the sponsorship, OOOOOO!!!!!!!! Nailed it 100% just clean editing with 2x tommo on my screen

That was so interesting, especially for someone like me who joined the sport in 2020 and to this day obviously doesn’t know the entire history of every driver🙏🏻
Appreciate that, thank you! 🙌
yuer hats are always on point
18:32 Yuki looks older in that picture than he does now
Magic Yuki
Crazy how 9 drivers (if you include Ocon) were in F1 7 years ago. Damn a lit can change, and yet a lot can stay the same.
2016 is 7 years ago, thanks Tommo for making me think back to the classic days! (1990s and 2000s)
Memories
@@TommoOnUA-cam Memories indeed
Ocon raced in DTM in 2016 :)
I kinda miss 2016, still had Manor, Force India and Jenson Button
And a cracking title fight
HITC Seven vibes. Love it
Thanks for the reminder that we old 😶👴, banger stuff as always 💥🔥🔥
We can get through this together
Can we talk about the fact Tommo isnt sponsored by squarespace this video
Normal service will be resumed next week
crazy ad transition tommo
tyvm
Yeah.. we need an update on this one
I still remember Australia 2016 where Lewis in his rocket ship was stuck behind Max in the Torro Rosso for quite some laps (i beleive after a shitty start) and complained on the radio: 'I can't pass this guy'
A sign of things to come...
14:8 bro said Nico hulkenberg hahahaxd
A lot of people seem to forget Valtteri joined F1 in 2013 so 2016 was actually his 4th year with Williams
this was ppretty much the time i started watching f1
Love the cheeky Josh Revell cameo 😂
King Joshua
Crazy how young Oscar, Logan, Yuki, Etc are. 😂
I was on my Xbox 360 all day at 15 😅
I feel like this video would have worked better, if you grouped the drivers by series and then talked about their individual years, it would have given us better context to what they accomplished.
Also it seems like you forgot to mention, but Ocon wasn't just the Renault reserve , he was also doing DTM in the 1st half of 2016. And as much as Renault deserves some flack for their 2016 season, the team they bought back was in absolute shambles and it wasn't just them underperforming for no reason.
Tommo went on a comment responding streak today i see, great vid as always
Of course!
Ah yes, 2016 Formula One World Champion, Nico Hülkenberg. 😂 Happens to the best of us
Alternative timeline
yees manor mentioned :D

As someone who's been an F1 fan since I became sentient, It lowkey gave me an existential crisis when over the past few years new drivers just started being younger than me.
Bro what is the music at 10:50 it goes so hard
David Land was also sponsored by Hello Fresh... Do I sense a collab? Haha would love to see, although while Tommo is more the entertainer, David is more a journalist...
Remember in 2016 Renault had just taken over the almost dead Lotus team. So the 2016 car was mainly what Lotus put together with some string and milk bottle caps.
Yeah this is true. Although Lotus finished P6 in the constructors for 2015. Scored points in the last race of that season too.
@@TommoOnUA-cam In 2015 Lotus had the Mercedes engine, which in the 2014-2016 period gave a large advantage over the Renault, Ferrari and Honda powered teams.
If you only look at Mercedes powered teams Lotus was the slowest. So when Renault put their worse engine in they went from the slowest Mercedes powered car in 2015 to one of the slowest cars in F1 for 2016.
0:16 "-Get some hÖ'höarr"
2016 was Bottas' fourth season at Williams, his first was 2013
True true
Tommo finally has a sponsor other than Squarespace!
Oscar, Yuki and Logie bear were all so cute in 2016.
Wtf I just got recommanded on YT the video that you posted 3 years ago. I saw it and thought you should make another one with the current grid.
Well well well
8 years ago in 2015 (yes I know not 2016 but it’s relevant and I need to tell this to people that might vaguely think its cool) I was sitting in oscar's go kart at one of his events when he was 13
in hindsight kmags career would have panned out so much better if he remained at renault
Was it just the top 8 into Q3 in 2016? I don't remember that.
Those shoes in the back... are they pink? I'm looking for a nice design with some pink in it
5:53 , just....how?? We need to know!!!! xD
My twin, ask my mum.
Do a video on Rio Haryanto haven't heard anything ab him since manor
Tommo: This will be a long one so get comfortable get your water

That 2016 force India livery 😍

Sidenote: Andy Priaulx's son Seb currently races in GT racing.
@3:26 I even made a video about that crash. My best video ever. :)
loved how you changed history, hulkenberg retired (it was rosberg) bottas did 4 not 3 seasons at williams (last was 2016)
Wow! It’s Oscar Pastryyy! 😂
Still can't believe this vid isn't sponsored by squarespace
Normal service will be resumed next week 😅
Stroll did so well in F3 that he was in F1 the next season, sounds familiar?
great video! quick question... has anyone ever told you that you look like liam payne's long-lost brother?
15:39 yeah Oscar 🍰
Cake is a lie
2016 was 7 years ago....I'm checking myself into a nursing home.
Whould be funny if you do this again in 7 years... Haha I wonder how the grid and everything will look like in 2030. Only time can tell. Its also weird to me that I have been following the sport since like 2010 and I was 10 years old. I am now 23 and I am older then some drivers. When I was 10 it just looked like all drivers were old man (well 25+ and some 30+ it felt old to a 10 year old) its funny to see and know that when I was 15 and just gaming doing nothing and just school etc etc there were kids doing these things and getting their ways into formula 1... I kinda now feel old lol
You're making me feel old with that intro 😭😭😭
Man can't believe that Nico hulkenberg retired in 2016
Thank god the Halo saved Alonso's life in Australia that year.. In retroactivity..
Aye, pretty mad when you think about it that way
5:20 Carlos Sainz looked like a younger DrDisrespect in this picture XD
I see it
Ah, 7 years ago - when I was still in my 20s... Just.
Age is just a number 💪
yoo my boi Haryanto got a mention lmao
Riooooooooooooooooo
Alonso currently being in pain
Working alright for him now though!
9:01 what is this rocket on the side of the car?
Good q. I think it's an air inlet for the engine, maybe?
15:39 "Oscar Pastry"

Who would have thought three years ago that Bottas would be at Alfa and that Gasly was at Alpine.
We'll be saying the same about certain transfers in 2026 eh
