Wow ... glad I came across this!! .. I was an extra in this film and so proud to say so! I spent 8 weeks on set with many other extras playing soldiers and getting paid for it. £220.00 Irish pounds was our weekly wage, we were paid of the Reserve Defence Forces, Navy section which were recruited to be extras in the film. That hill at 25:40 in your reel we marched up and down there 4 times each day, the first few weeks were at the top of the hill practicing as a group to march in formation to get that wide angle shot of thousands of English troops facing down the hill. In reality that we were only about 400 in total but were later told that a special camera was used during filming to double the amount so it looked like a huge force facing the Scots. At the bottom of this hill is where the we also played the Scots facing the English force with shilterns, so in fact in the movie we were facing our selves! The speech shot took a while to shoots as the horse that Mel Gibson was on didn't cooperate on a few occasions and so had to be reshot over n over!
When the horses came towards was a scary sight, we practiced for days getting this right, as we stood in lines as the horses ran at full speed towards us in between the lines of Scots to make it look like we were being trampled. The scene where some English soldiers were knocked off their horses was coordinated by Mick Rodgers, Gibson's stunt double and of Terminator fame, fake foam horses were use and some on electric tracks with stunt men on top, amazing skills.
A select few were picked to be Irish also in the last battle where we faced Long Shanks troops, extra extras were brought in for this scene and they can be easily spotted in the film as they wore the brighter colors. I was lucky to be the very first person shown in the panned clip of the Irish soldiers before the battle started!! Again we attacked ourselves as this scene was split and done similar to the first battle.
Finally about a dozen of us were picked to be assassins' to kill Wallace when he was knocked off his horse by de Bruce, we spent 3 days in total filming that part, running back n forth until the producers were happy with what they got. I'm the guy right of screen with no helmet in black chainmail outfit!
To say we were part of this film is something that no one can take away from the group that travelled to be film stars in the 90's to see first hand how the long process of making a film and the amount of effort that goes into it before you see it on a cinema screen is amazing, memories that will live on :)
My compliments for all the hard work that you done to show the many locations from the film xxxx
Thanks for sharing this!
Amazing 👏 ❤
When Long Shanks walks down the stairs to talk with his captains and to declare "Prima Nocte", there are two guards either side of the stairs. The guy on the left is my friend Johnny from Bray. When the scouting team were looking for additional extras, they went through some of the villages and my mate was sitting having a beer and put his hand up!
I loved reading this. I'd love to have that experience. Great stuff
Thanks for sharing, I was so emotionally effected by this movie
I was in the movie when I was a teenager.I was a member of the FCA in Ireland it’s similar to the army cadets. The studio needed about 2000 people to film the battle scenes We were filming for about a month in the Curragh Camp in Kildare.
That's super cool!. Something to remember for the rest of you life!.. I watched the movie at least a dozen times, I couldn't imagine how many more if I was actually in it haha. Even though it may not be historically accurate, it is my heritage and I get a weird nostalgic sense of "home" when I watch the movie... even though I've never been there. My great grandmother was born there. Loved listening to her accent 😂 always put a smile on my face.
Did you have a chance to talk to Mel Gibson?
I was at the Battle of Stirling in the Curragh in Ireland, one of the best experiences ever. I remember the first time Mel did the famous speech, we were asked to shout as loud as possible, we subsequently did and scared all the horses away!
This was PHENOMENALLY done. You set a high bar with movie location filming
Honestly cannot commend your work on this video enough!! And your pronunciation, especially the Irish place names deserves some serious recognition!!!
I remember well walking up Glen Nevis to watch filming from a distance, it’s only a few miles from my home . Used to take binoculars to get a better look.
Just watching your video on Braveheart and you mentioned that where you were were walking 25.32 minutes in, that the extras would have been Infront and behind you, I was one of those extras for a few weeks, when we came to wardrobe in the mornings you were told what costume to put on, sometimes you were a scot and sometimes you were english, When Mel Gibson gave his speach and the scots were cheering him, a lot of us were shouting "where is the bar" lol, If you see the movie you'll know...., I still have my set pass and a few pictures from a camera, a lot of guys were caught with cameras and had them confiscated, I was also an extra in Saving Private Ryan, many of those extras were military also, great times
Thanks for sharing this!
Great video. I live in the Scottish Highlands and I was born in Lanark (the real one!). The scenery in Highlands is just incredible and I see it every day. Never fails to amaze no matter the weather (which we have a lot of!). It looks beautiful and peaceful or mysterious and terrifying.
I was in brave heart as a member of athe reserve defence forces. Spent two weeks on set as an extra in the battle of Falkirk and battle of sterling. We stayed at the curragh camp. Food was terrible but what am experience. Mel Gibson was a gent but meeting Patrick McGoohan was my highlight. Thanks for the video because I couldn't have found both those locations if I tried. Must go back and visit soon.
What food did you get? Lol
@@Sid_Scot as it was the defence forces feeding us it was terrible. Generally whatever they could get into one pot. We didn't have the top class catering the rest of the cast and crew got. We couldn't say anything because we were active soldiers at the time so we'd protest by collecting our food and proceeding to the nearest bin and dumping it straight in. I don't recall it getting us anywhere though.
Üdv. Magyarországról.
2019-ben voltam a feleségemmel Skóciában, gyerekkorom óta vágytam oda, 44 évesen sikerült.😊
Ez az ország egyszerűen mesés! Varázslatos! Megbabonáz a táj, hihetetlenül szép rabul ejt a misztikája.❤
Még egyszer szeretnék eljutni a halálom előtt, olyan mint a függőség, újra vágyik rá az ember.
If UA-cam had something like Oscar awards for youtube videos, this video would win a bunch of them.
Hahaha, YOU are not biased at all... 😆
Absolutely Amazing! So happy to see you back, buddy! 👏😁🤘
Calm doon
Agree
What a video, great attention to detail love it
It's great to see so much of ireland featured in the movie. I I rememeber when they were either filming it or they had finished, we went to stay in my aunts house in trim and we went to trim Castle and seen the set still set up.
Bravo! Another top notch movie locations video.
Thanks for always supporting, Herve!
I met Mel Gibson when he was filming Hamlet at Dunnottar castle Aberdeenshire. They had a huge replica built for the actors scenes, and as you walked behind it was actually made of plaster and held with scaffold. Mel Gibson came over to chat during a break for a coffee and cigarette. We talked about the history of the castle and he said it was never captured, that's when I told him William Wallace captured it on his way to liberate Aberdeen from the English.
Five years later he directed and starred in Braveheart.
😮😮😮 That’s awesome!
so without your chat to him there would be no braveheart? wow
Best editing i have seen on youtube for comparison shots..you need a spot on tv...brilliant.
This is truly incredible. I've said it before but you guys are among the absolute best movie location youtubers in the entire UA-cam realm. The Great Algorithm grant you 100 Million subscribers.
Yeah, from your fingers to God's ears (or eyes)!
Brilliant video. Very good work! As a Scot I have always been curious of where in Scotland the locations were! Superb! 👏👏👏
Wow, your video is really amazing. I'm excited to see it. Thank you for such incredible work, you are an incredible content creator
Thank you for the kind words, Diego!
Scotland is probably the one country that has better scenery then we have here in ireland. Absolute stunning country. That hike looked unreal 👍
One of the coolest things I have ever done! Can’t wait to go back and visit both countries again someday!
Not true, Ireland's West coast is unequalled in Europe and different from the highlands so both have their qualities.
Just visit Connemara or try to climb M. Errigal in Co. Donegal for similar views :) Scotland though is undoubtedly stunningly beautiful!
You haven't traveled much if you truly believe Ireland has the best scenery in the world
As a Scot who knows Glencoe and Trim very well, a first class video.
Thank you so much!
The shots are all lined up so well. I appreciate the amount of effort it took. great job. Btw the reason why so many old buildings have no roof in Ireland is because when tax for land was calculated, it was calculated based on number of buildings. So if a building had no roof, it wasn't considered in the tax calculations for the land.
Also a few things about Castles in Ireland. Many of them are owned by the state and maintained by the OPW (Office of Public works). These are who you want to contact if you wish to gain access to a castle that is surrounded by private land. Often they will give you the caretakers contact number and many are happy to accommodate if you ask nicely. A local caretaker here gave me the keys to a local castle to explore the insides properly.
But it certainly is an issue having no right of access for the public. The state owns the castle and I think 10 feet radius around the castles. But we need to find a solution for a right of access and we just don't unfortunately. I think Scotland has a right to roam law, Ireland doesn't.
THE BEST movie location channel on UA-cam! I was afraid you were no longer making videos so am so excited you’re still going! The matchups are incredible, I love when you match it perfectly and the way you overlay shots. The background music and general aesthetic is also really well done. Ryan - You need to get Virginia more comfortable being on camera, if she was as comfortable as you are you could get this to 1M subscribers no problem. Keep them coming!
I've subscribed after watching this
I love UA-cam world because you get to see beautiful places you wouldn’t ever have the opportunity to see, thank you for sharing plus Braveheart is one of my favourite films.
Watched till the end! This is the best film locations I’ve seen! Well done 👍 🥇
Thank you so much! I know it’s a long one but I tried to trim down as much as I could!
Scotland is one if not the most beautiful place in the world. The more rural you get the more magical it becomes.
I live in the Highlands now but was born in Lanark (the real one!) and the scenery never gets old. No matter the weather (and we have a lot!) it looks either beautiful and stunning or mysterious and terrifying.
Great match ups. One of the best in the game I’d say. Watching from England 🏴
Thanks, Paul. I appreciate that! Hoping I can get back to England sooner rather than later for some videos!
Thanks for the beautiful film locations cant believe its 33 years since Braveheart was made crazy how time goes so quickly 😁
I think only 28 years. If not, I'm a little older than I thought 😆 But, time DOES fly!
@@GoingtotheMovies You could be right when you get older you loss track off time 😂😁
Incredible work. I've been down Glen Nevis a few times to Steall Falls and had no idea that was where they filmed Braveheart. Thanks so much and so glad I found your channel.
Very cool! I didn't get to make it to Steall Falls on this trip, but I really hope to get back up there one day. Thank you for the kind words!
This is by far one of the better movie locations I've ever seen and for my favourite film no less! incredible effort and quality footage put into this man! Thank you!
Absolutely Brilliant .
Greetings from Scotland
Thank you! Can’t wait to get back one day!
What an amazing job of lining up the shots, awesome.
Thanks, Matt! Glad you liked the matchups!
Enjoyed this as I was an extra, for the filming of the Battle of Stirling. ❤ They used a split motion camera to make the hillside look complete. BIG for 1994. 🎉🎉🎉
Very cool! Glad you enjoyed the video and hope I helped bring back some fun memories!
Amazing video! That’s not actually Mel in the sweeping helicopter shot on top the mountain. It’s Mel’s stunt double, Mic Rodgers, who was also the Second Unit Director & Stunt Coordinator on the picture. The helicopter dropped him off & was circling around to film when some poor German hiker came up the path, saw Mic and thought he saw a Scottish ghost. Mic had the guy hide back down the path so they could get the shot. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
That's a cracking video, I loved it. For info, in Scotland we don't call them valleys, we call them Glens. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to watching many more.
Wow, the amount of work you put into this production really shows. Excellent work. I'm not sure if you have made videos from New Zealand, but I would definitely watch. I hope your channel continues to grow. Take care.
Thanks, Cary! Haven’t been to New Zealand yet but of course I can’t wait to go one day!
People dog this movie for being so incredibly inaccurate, but I've always loved it for the music and scenery (very much including Sophie Marceau). It's a beautiful movie. Thank you for finding all these locations.
I agree. Incredible music score and of course incredible locations! I understand the complaints but I just try to enjoy movies as movies not history lessons. After I see something "based on a true story" I usually end up looking up the real story anyways.
DANG!! Dude this is a bucket list item for me!! So glad you posted this. What a great job. I know it’s super hard to get to some of these locations. 2 thumbs up 👍👍😎🎉
Thanks, Nick! Lots and lots of hiking on this one haha. Definitely worth it though and I highly recommend it!
Major props! I watched this twice lol. I loved the comment you made about and ancient burial ground and you’ll be cursed for life 😂. I hope this video get 1 million+ views it deserves it. Amazing job again. Whenever I do this filming location in the future I’ll be asking you questions haha. If you ever do a video in Texas hit me up! I’m in the Dallas area 😎🤘
@@TravelswithNick will definitely hit you up! Let me know when you’re heading out for Braveheart spots!
This is how you do a film locations video, lots of leg work!
And thanks for doing the tree comparison lines early on. I've been waiting for someone to do that for a while 😃💪
Thanks, Daniel! Glad you liked it!
@@GoingtotheMovies Oh yes
Awesome work. When they finished filming at Trim castle the film company suggested to leave parts of the set up as the locals thought the castle looked great but the council didn't like the idea so it was all dismantled.
As a huge fan of Breavheart👑 this is really a treat. Retracing the locations must have been a huge effort 🙏
It was a lot of work, but 100% worth it! It was unreal getting to experience these spots!
This is some serious content, thank you!
Haha, thank YOU! Glad you enjoyed it!
Donegal man here , really enjoyed this video as braveheart is my favourite film of all time, I can confirm that it's 100% historically accurate, the Scots and the Irish hated the English and still do 😂 🇮🇪
brilliant video. I appreciate the work put in.
Thanks, Chris! Much appreciated!
Great work guys!.
Absolutely brilliant video..👌🏻
Thank you, Geoffrey! Glad you liked it!
Fantastic! Loved this video. Great job! Thank you!
Thank you for watching, Brent! Glad you like it!
full respect ❤ amazing video. I live in UK and can not imagine the planning time and effort in creating this , thanks for sharing brilliant stuff. Amazing seeing these places
Paul, thank you so much! It took a lot of time and research but didn’t feel like work at all. It was a blast getting to see everything!
Absolutely brilliant! We loved it! Well done! 👍
I was going hillwalking one day in 1994 when I was stopped by the film crew traffic control. We watched them filming a scene at the village (two men on horseback meeting and talking). Later that day we were on top of Sgurr a' Mhaim, the prominent mountain in the village scenes, and we wondered if we were in the movie! We were back a year later and I went down to the village area wondering if they left a mess but you would never think they had been there. I found a piece of broken pottery that's still in my bedside drawer!
That is amazing, Bob! One of my favorite things about posting these videos is hearing the stories from people who were around the production when it was going on. Thank you for sharing!
We were camping in Glen Nevis around the same time. We got to wander round the village and take some photos. There is another "mound" in some shots that was actually a fake hill with a generator truck hidden behind it 🙂
Great video, the casting crew came to our High School in Fort William looking for extras, me and a couple of the boys were cast as extras for the scenes in Glen Nevis.
Never made it into the film but we got £50 a day and 2 days off school a week which was cool, also got to work on the set building area once a week sweeping up all the sawdust and crap off the floor, great fun👍
Cool 😎
New favorite channel! This is how you produce content! Combining a love for iconic movies, travel, storytelling, music, narration, visuals, editing... all while respecting the culture of the people in the area. You even give credit to other content creators for helping you out. VERY well done! Lastly, you're excited to be there which makes it even more compelling! (*see Last of the Mohicans location video at Bridal Veil Falls). Awesome stuff.
Another super quality video. Keep’em coming.
I will try! Thank yo, SS-abc!
This was as epic as the movie, absolutely breathtaking. Thank you for making it. I'm a brit and went many years ago to some of the filming and real world locations of Braveheart and Rob Roy, I used to be obsessed by the films in me teens. Still love the movies. Thank you for creating this, so much hard work went into this
Another absolutely banger video! Gorgeous filming and editing and all your work marching up shots takes it to another level. I always enjoy your videos, you’re doing amazing work.
Thanks a ton, routepluto1983! I hope to keep doing these adventure style ones from time to time!
Excellent video! So much nostalgic and childhood memories in this movie 👌👌

Loved this video. Braveheart was an amazing movie!! I think I cried for days after watching the movie., William Wallace was such a brave, fearless man. He had an awful death. I cannot believe how in human the executioner were.
Thank you, Trisha! Awesome movie for sure!

What a great video! Amazing locations and matches here. Thank you!
Thank you, Paul!
Really enjoyed this 👌 freedom 🏴top notch editing 😎
Great vid as always 🔥🔥
Thanks, homie 🔥🔥🔥
Very interesting as irish person ,many of the mountain scenes are obviously not shot in ireland or obviously not scotland like the battle scenes but many scenes its not so clear. such as the stockade.
After visiting, I can definitely see what you mean. I was very lucky to find that stockade spot which is near Sally Gap. The landscape there was incredible!
Amazing work. The climb up that mountain alone earned a sub.
Hahaha! Thanks so much!
Brilliant video. I live in Trim, obviously know about about Braveheart being filmed in the castle but didn't know about Bective Abbey being a location for Braveheart as well! Which is now a whole new experience every time I'm out there with the dogs :) Thanks so much!
How have I only discovered this channel
Great stuff. Next time you're in Ireland I'll buy you a guiness as I live one mile away from Trim Castle and proposed to my wife under the Barbican gate 😊
Thank you, Probuilder! I’ll be taking you up on that!
Amazing job! I respect and appreciate your hard work and dedication to details. Thank you.
Fair play lads on all your hard work! I live in Ireland and ive never gone to these locations, but on my next trip by I will pull over and have a look. The effort and attention to detail you put in is commendable. First of your videos ive seen, Im going to sub and go through your backlog. Outstanding.
Thank you so much for the sub and the kind words, Dave! Enjoy those spots!
