I used to play there as a child. We, my brother and I would get the key from the gate keepers cottage first and we were always told to close the castles gate behind on to keep the cows out. My late mother was a descendent of the Stewart's. We lived in Falkirk at the time and returned to the U.S.A..
I got to visit this great castle this past August. My trip to Scotland was a trip of a lifetime and visiting Doune castle was one of the high points. I'll be back in a couple years and I can't wait.
Really excellent and highly informative account, I often watch similar Scottish videos with a degree of frustration due to inaccuracy, this is absolutely 100% spot on, so very well done. Doune is an odd castle as it is not one which is spoken about yet has such an intense history. I stay not that far away.
Im always apprehensive when a North American covers my countries history. Typically, place names and people names are pronounced wrong etc, but you did a great job and as a result, a thoroughly brilliant video and a new subscriber! Thanks! Soar Alba!
I lived in argaty just outside doune. My son was born there , and Doune and the surrounding area are all amazing , i went back a few yrs ago ,nothing has changed
The thing I love about history, is that people just like you & me. Had to live those lives, for us to be where we are today. On the video, if you shot it. Is to take a mono/tripod & do still establishing shots in each new location. Hold them for 10/15 seconds, give yourself an edit point. Then do your pan or tilt, zoom ins & outs. 26 years of Television cameraman, taught me a few things 👍🏼👍🏼
To @robertlinscott, thanks for sharing your story! That is amazing that you played in such an old and famous castle. I was in Scotland several years ago. It is such a beautiful place. The people were so friendly and nice. God bless.
Visited Doune Castle several years ago. It was undergoing minor repair then but it looks like big improvements have been made. Didn't know Mary Queen of Scots had a connection. Very informative. Our guide didn't tell us even half this much. Very interesting!
Nice job on this. My families castle was Castle Tioram. Having lived in the states all my life it is one of the items I hope to see soon as I just retired from a 47 year career. If I do get to go I will definitely make an effort to go see Doune as well. Thank you
Margaret Graham, Countess of Menteith, my 22nd great grandmother was born at Doune Castle, Stirlingshire, Scotland. Seeing videos like this makes me want to go there.
What a stunner of a castle, can certainly see how it was the most well preserved, so beautiful to look at. Would love to take an explore there, thanks so much for sharing! :D

I have family in Dunblane about 10 min drive.when I’m home and visiting,I’ll go to Doune castle. Now don’t laugh but I’ll lay down on the ground ,around the outside and I get dreams and intense feelings of deja vu. I had always felt someth8ng around their.I thought I was having a Scottish ancestry rush , but instead my dreams and stuff were as a Roman soldier mercenary. A story in my family was about mercenary in the family deserted the Roman’s and started living local in Ayrshire. Some relations stayed in Scotland and some went to germany. Anyway I’m going home next year can’t wait for another vision. If your in Dunblane, go to the WESTLANDS hotel,it was awesome.
I love the castles meant for giants and how there is extra floors to the castle buried beneath the earth from the last mud flood reset. Just amazing. Our smaller sized people definitely didn't build these with the tech we had with our horses and buggies 🤣🤣🤣
Excellent historical video. Thank you for doing this .....I'm planning a trip to Scot., Ire. and Wales when this covid dilemma is past... Are you a Scotsman?
I am doing research on James Dog who was the Kepar of the Quenis Wardrop at Doune Castle during the mid 1400s. The poetry of William Dunbar records some of the story. Does anyone have any more information?
Most modern buildings wouldn't last near as long as these castles do. Half of America will decay and fall apart and this building will still be standing. They built these things with longevity in mind for sure.
Was the castle located on a site that provided a military advantage. Were the walls originally plastered and painted with illustrations? Was the metal screening on the windows original? What was roof made of? Was there a village around the castle?
Does anyone know why there are Rune marking all over that castle? I was there 9 years ago and the Ing rune was everywhere. I didn’t know what it was and the people working there didn’t know anything about it. Actress Helen Mirren has the same mark as a tattoo on her hand. It’s scratched deep into most sand stone window sills and even in unreachable areas high up in bedrooms.
There was a lot of superstition, later on in the 16th century cause, in part, by King James and his witch hunts. But prior to that those signs were used to ward off evil spirits, and "witches"
Interestingly, in the Army Messes we still have a call to dinner. We get a half hour call and then 15 mins. Played by a bugle. Half hour to finish drinks and ladies to the loos and 15 minutes for the men to sort out who they will be escorting into dinner. One never sits next to ones husband.
Simple .If you don’t like it switch it off. Nobody really wants to hear your whining opinion. You are entitled to your views but make your remarks relevant please. Rob
I wish that people who are not Scottish, asked for help in pronouncing the names! It is so comiical to hear some of the names, which takes it away from the seriousness of the subject! ........old Tich

Oh that’s so cool
Great story you have how much fun it would have been
I hope you have a record of your ancestry. Proof is always a good idea.
Truly cool story.

This is absolutely amazing! The history! Thinking about all the people who walked amongst the walls of this castle !
My ancestor is Robert Stewart. I recently discovered this in my research and trying to learn as much as I can. So cool to see!
Same here, he’s my 12th great grandad
He’s also on my family tree, so hello cousins! 😊
Was his brother Jimmy Stewart very famous in Hollywood?
My DNA goes to the Sturts
My Mc Curdy family is from Isle of Bute
I was here last year. You will appreciate it much more if you’re watching Outlander.
Really like this castle. Hope it's kept as original as possible.
I enjoyed this. Thank you so much for wonderful ancient history. Scotland is indeed a beautiful land. Their castles are so well made.

A visioner. Hmmm. A history rider; saddle well and sit up straight, that your memory be recalled.
Cool 😎
I learn about it from a fanfic now I can't stop thinking about it.
Amazing place

The closest i got to castle s was while i climbed in north Wales Snowdonia...and the welsh had minni stone castles as homesteads now keeping sheep
Visited Doune a couple of years ago! Far better that plastic Edinburgh castle!
One of my favorite castles in Scotland! Sam Heughan narrated the information about Outlander scenes at Doune Castle.
That's cool.

I like that old Royal Palace
Doune, doone or doon means hill fort or castle on a hill. How do I know this? Because I am called Doone
This castle was used in Monty Python's in search of the holy grail
Father: "One day, lad, all this will be yours." His son: "What, the curtains?"
And game of thrones
So cool!!

I find some have been so restored that they are a little disapointing.
Beautifull building 😙
we were there in October 2019 but they had just switched to Winter hours and closed up for the day so we couldn't go in ;-(

Beautiful castles and another ugly disturbing consistent history lesson on what monarchy government was like. 🤢

@@roblove8354 Awwww, did you just discover social media grandpa? Avoid the comment section if you’re this bothered and fragile. 🤣
You mean King James 1 beheading his cousins cause of Jealousy? Don't worry James Mhor escaped and had children. ;D
'Doune' comes from a "gay lick" word?
No, it doesn't - it comes from a Gaelic word, (which would be pronounced more like "galick")..
Gallic
I'm hearing a lot of could be this or might have been used for that. Not nearly enough Fact!
