7 Crucial Safety Tips for Wilderness Adventures | Plan, Prepare & Stay Protected

- How do we work with safety during our longer adventures? What is the most important? What kind of gear do we bring? How are we planning and thinking?
In this video, Matti will talk you through 7 essential safety tips and explain our way of planning and working with safety while he’s on a 6 day dog sledding tour with four guests from the woodlands in Jokkmokk up to the wild mountains. Outdoor safety is a huge subject so he just ”scratch on the surface” and while editing this video we see that we can easily make a second video about the same subject. For example on this tour we stayed all nights in cabins but while winter camping you will have other safety routines.
For us trip planning, packing the right outdoor gear, planning food etc. is a natural part of our work. If you are experienced in making wilderness or outdoor adventures it’s comes natural for you but it’s always important to make a reflection about your routines and actions now and then.

We are Stina & Matti and we live in Northern Sweden in a small place called Jokkmokk. Except for making videos we also run a small company called JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA and a kennel called WORKING HUSKY KENNEL. We offer guided outdoor tours in Swedish Lapland all around the year. During the winter we mostly do dog sled tours and in the summertime, it’s hiking tours, wildlife safaris, canoe, and packraft trips. We live year-round in Jokkmokk with our Siberian Husky and 2 Border Collies.

Just watching and listening again to your philosophy. Many thanks xxxxx
Excellent video, with great advice. Brings back many memories of when I guided sled dog winter camping trips here in northeastern Minnesota. I still have sled dogs, but now just for the shear joy of running them and living with them. Thank you for your videos!
Thanks!
Thanks for this very important video!
Tromsø, Norway, 69 degrees north. I use Garmin iNreach for SMS/mail communication via the iridium network. Works very reliable and good. I know people who wouldn't be alive without this device. Instead of using garmin's built in weather forecast, I ask my family for text based forecast for my position from yr.no - same weather service as you use, Matti. Very reliable for my use. The SPOT devices use a satelite network with much less reliable coverage up here, but SPOTs have still saved lives in this area.
Keep up the good work, Matti and Stina! Tusen takk!
Hey Matti! It was such an unforgettable experience and so much fun to be out with you this week! We also hope we will see us again soon. Stay safe and healthy!
That would be great! Welcome back!!!
:-)
/Matti
For me the Inreach with ability to send messages about my progress, changes in my route etc. to my family is great. Having a satellite phone would be excellent but since I dont have a business with paying customers it is a bit too expensive. I do however also bring a vhf/uhf radio programmed with common channels for shorter range communication If travelling in a group and possible emergency communication with rescue services that have ability to communicate on VHF ch 16. I also keep a few radios with family at home and in my car so that they can bring them to communicate if they have to come out and help me tow a snowmobile or locate me even if they have my gps position.
/Jonas
That’s a good idea with the radio. …and I totally agree about the communication with satellite devices. It really changed the game.
/Matti
I also like Inreach, and I rent it for the time I need it, then I don't need to pay an expensive subscription, plus I get the model that I need for a specific trip. I also love the feeling of not having to own yet another gadget that will be out of date/out of service in a few years.
Stopping, Waiting and changing plans, routes, directions or schedules are successes- a testament to solid planning and conscious preparation. Without proper preparations and on-site awareness, this would otherwise put you in even worse conditions.
Great video Matti.
Thanks! That’s really the point!!!
:-)

Alltid lika kul att se handlaget med hundarna och hur nöjda de är. Ha det gött.
Tack!
You do bring value, Matti. I look forward to your vids.
Incredible photography, too. Do you use a drone to get those overhead shots?
Very professional-looking scenes.
Thanks!
Yes, I use a small drone from DJI.
/Matti
Fin video! Viktigt ämne o mkt vackra vyer! Att vara dålig på att äta/dricka när man blir trött kan jag erkänna mig skyldig till 😉
Det är så lätt att glömma/skippa ätandet!
:-)

Absolutely loved the production value in this video . . such a mix of drone stuff . .pov of the dogs . . scenery . . Along with some fab safety hints and tips. .Top job Matti
Thanks!!!
It’s lovely that you like it!
/Matti
I carry a PLB on my hikes but the problem is if i lose consciousness i can not press the button. A Garmin Inreach can be monitored by someone else at home, if you stop moving for hours or days or if you don't send a message according to a pre made up plan they can call for help.
That’s a good point!!!
/Matti
Hej Matti. Nice to hear again from you. Thank you for the interesting video. Is your leg totally ok again?
Thanks!
My leg is really okay. Sometimes I still feel that something has happened… but most of the time it is just normal.
/Matti
Wow, this was an incredible video, great scenery, great advice. You have skill when you can talk to a camera and control a dog sled team at the same time! If you haven't done a video on skis and how to use them in this terrain, that would be helpful too, thank you :)
Thanks!
😃

Hi Matti, better get the runs in pretty soon. Spring is coming at the Circle. Be safe.
We still got another month of dogsledding in front of us!
:-)

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA Great. Seen some bad weather in spring storms ladt week up north. Hurricane force winds and blizzard conditions. 80F tommorow here in East Kentucky USA. Wild flowers blooming my orchard as well
The contrasts with snow, open water and flowers are a great period!
:-)
/Matti
good advice thank you
We use Zoleo SOS emergency device. Uses satellite or cell signal if available . Wish we had the infrastructure you have, from trail marking to cabins etc. Lot less infrastructure in our neck of the woods. Great video and happy trails.
Thats really helpful with cabins, trails etc as you mentioned!!! Jokkmokk is a great place.
I will check that type of transmitter. Thanks!
/Matti
Great info ❤❤❤😊😊😊
Thanks!!!
alot of good boys :)
12.08 Weatherbound. How do you know that the sled at the back is still with you?
That’s one reason why I just want 4 guests. It’s sometimes difficult to know what is going on in the back. You just have to stop regular and check.
We also avoid the worst weather.
/Matti
Hi, great video, thanks. I was wondering whether Sweden had laavu like in Finland. I snowshoe-pulka and really like that laavu culture they have over there, and if you had them too I could see myself in those sceneries you showed here.
Yes, Lavvos exists here too!
/Matti
@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA cheers
I just try to keep my fingers and toes LOL....
🤣
Very good video, thanks a lot. I would be interested by a video about camera in cold weather, how do you proceed to make your vids and how do you deal with the cold to prevent your camera of malfunctions.
I have made a video about camera gear in cold weather. It’s in our channel if you check the videos from the last month or something like that.
:-)

Bra info Matti ! Hur är snöläget i mitt område? Funderar på åka upp nästa vecka.
Det är fint här. Lite varmt denna veckan men kyla är på ingång!

hej Matti
Overestimate your own capabilities. 😊
Hey Matti, another informativ and entertaining video. Have to add one thing, don´t know if you already mentioned it: choose the right partner for your trip. That makes you not only feel saver.... I wasn´t that lucky with my choice, but learned about it first while beeing on the tour, althougt we knew eachother for a good bit and did several trips together... but not in this kind of environment and activity. Never again... unfortunately... better do it by your own next time, like the older lady we met in Aktse, doing the white ribbon by herself.
But anyway, We are right back now from Kvikkjokk and Kungsleden and we had still a good bit of fun and enjoyed our trip most of the time and for good measure - at our last full day !!! you came past with your dog team and some klients heading to Kvikkjokk shortly before Parte Fjellstuga. I heard you in my back calling "ja ja" to your dogs and recognized your voice immediately - turned back and waved to you calling "hey Matti" ... "beautifull weather" you answered - and wushhh - you were fare away in the woods.
My companion didn´t even had a clou what happenend and couldn´t understand my exitement. But for myself it kept me well mooded the following days ...sadly he wasn´t interestet in Jokkmokks Sami Museum and other interesting things too... so "we" decidet to leave right after our tour and heading back the whole way home in one ride... So I had no chance to ask you if the coffee was tasty ;-)
Maybe next time.
Hej Tobias! You're absolutely right about choosing the right partner for an outdoor adventure, at least if you have the possibility. We're bringing out clients and never really know what kind of personalities they have but the persons you spend time with on a trip makes a huge difference.
Thank you so much for the coffee and choclate you delivered to our door step. That was really sweet of you! I hadn't been able to give it to Matti last week so he hasn't tasted it yet but he will do when he comes back home soon.
Take care and hope you get better outdoor experiences in the future! /Stina
@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA Hej Stina, Thanks for your warm and kindly words. Enjoy the coffee both. I met great people out there and will be back once. 👍👍👍
I don't drink ☕️ but will enjoy the chocolate 😋
