6 Day High Alpine Dog Sledding Adventure | Mountains, Winter Camping & Huskies

- High Alpine Dog Sledding Adventure in Kebnekaise and Sjaunja Nature Reserve. In April 2023 Matti went with a small group of four and 28 of our Siberian Huskies to one of the most high alpine areas in the Swedish mountains, facing challenging uphills and where both winter camping but also spent some nights in mountain huts.
This sled dog trip started out from Saltoluokta Mountain Lodge and we followed the Kings Trail (Kungsleden) north during the first two days. After that we turned east passing Swedens highest mountain Kebnekaise and went over a low mountain plateau through Sjaunja Nature Reserve and back to Saltoluokta where we finished the journey after six days on the trail.
This tour we offer almost every year but because of weather and other different situations we sometimes need to take another route and that’s what adventures are like. You need to have a plan A, plan B and sometimes also a plan Q because you never know what’s gonna happen. But, this year we more or less could follow plan A.
Melina, Micke, Katrin and Jannik joined this time and we had great fun together.

We are Stina & Matti and we live in Northern Sweden in a small place called Jokkmokk. Except for making videos we also run a small company called JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA and a kennel called WORKING HUSKY KENNEL. We offer guided outdoor tours in Swedish Lapland all around the year. During the winter we mostly do dog sled tours and in the summertime, it’s hiking tours, wildlife safaris, canoe, and packraft trips. We live year-round in Jokkmokk with our 50 Siberian Husky and 2 Border Collies.

Me and the dogs would just love that! I should do this with my bike and 2 dogs I can pull too!
I love this kind of adventures, beautiful landscape.
This landscape is great, specially when you get this kind of beautiful weather!

Tack för en underbart vacker vårvinterfilm!!! Bästa vädret ☀️❄️ Grattis till 20 000 följare 🎉🎉🎉

Marry Christmas, Matti. It hurts when you hear a dog whining like that. I don't understand why the owner doesn't check on him.
Thank you for your clear statement on this.
Jag blir så otroligt sugen på att hänga med er på tur!
Välkommen!!!
;-)

Amazing, the dogs are in fantastic condition and clear to see very happy, a wonderful expedition great job
The dogs are great and we really care for them. They are a big reason why we are doing this and also the reason how this way of living is possible!

Merry Christmas 🎄❄️❄️❄️
Thanks and I hope you also have a great time!
See you soon.

Beautiful trip, scenery and happy dogs in their element - well done Matti & Stina. What is that wool hoody jumper you are wearing Matti?
It’s a lovely wool hoodie but you have to visit Jokkmokk winter festival… There are two guys who import this hoodies from Himalayas and sell them in Sweden.
/Matti
New to me. Great to see how you work with your team. I didn't understand people's tolerance or even encouraging noisy impatient dogs. My Siberians are Not and I don't allow it either, but so happy when they are happy, and we often have a good howl together.
Best dogsled Video you have made. You picked the best views. 👋🇺🇸
Thank you!!
/Stina & Matti
Thanks for sharing this adventure with us ! Lovely landscape, lovely teams ! :D

I'm sure you had a great week :) I wish you a happy evening today @@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA and best wishes for the next year.
See you soon both of you !
Great vid and trip. Beautiful. No mosquitos. Much enjoyed. Happy Holidays
Yes… isn’t that lovely! No mosquito!!!

It's to dry here in Northwestern Nevada & up in the nearby high Sierras for mosquitos unless there is a water source. However, we have rattlesnakes to watch out for, not mosquitos. We call 'em, "buzzworms". Be respectful, give 'em a wide birth, they were here first & I'm invading their home - they're more afraid of MEeee & only want an avenue of escape.
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada, U.S.A.
I love your Videos, matti! They are great. So authentic. I also prefered yours to niklas' (the professional youtuber) his was very nicely made for sure, but yours is full of soul and live which is just the best to watch! Hope i can come on a sledge Tour with you once. Keep it up
You put a big smile on my face everytime you verbally tell the dogs which way to turn.
I like that you explain the trail snow conditions which is something we can't see/feel on video.
21:23; ahhh, heated shelter.
25:32; the drone footage shows just how steep & long the uphill grade is.
Sweden provides a wonderful "service" by marking/maintaining trails & shelters.

I was skiing with my dog from Kaitumjaure to Tjäktja stuga on 6th April and continued to Abisko the next day. At some point there I saw a group of several dogsleds behind me, changing from the scooter trail that I was on more towards the marked Kungsleden trail. At least it looked like that. That was probably you then. Ha! :) And I had run into you a few days before on the way down to Saltoluokta also when you went towards Sitasjaure. Maybe I'll see you again in the area next March/April. Happy sledding!
Hello!
I were between Kaitumjaure and Singi 11 of April. From Saltoluokta it could have been me. You recognise our sleds. It’s only our group who use this modern aluminium sleds and I think I’m the only guide who use this kind of hitech sled with sitting box.
At northern Kungsleden there is several companies that make tours.
Maybe we meet again!
/Matti
Merry Christmas ❤❤❤
Thanks andning hope you also get a great weekend!

I've a feeling what he tried to say with potato moose, is lapskojs. Which i don't think have any english translation.
🤣
We made a kind of reindeer stew with mashed potatoes. That’s good food!!!

Merry Christmas!
As alwyays: great video of great tour through incredible landscape!
A question: what kind of booties do you use and where do you buy them? Our Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever loves winter and snow but sometimes he would need booties.
Thank you and all the best.
Markus
We bought booties from Swedis Centerlines in Sweden. There is several producers of this. Non Stop is another brand. In USA you have a company called dignities.com
I hope you find what you are searching for. If not, send one message to us and tell us from which country you want to order and I will try to find exactly where.

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA excellent comments, this is why I read 'em & enjoy 'em as much as watching the video.

Hello! I'm wondering if on a trip such as this you ever include side activities such as climbing Kebnekaise or any of the other surrounding peaks? Love your videos and and hoping for the day I have enough pennies saved to come and join you.
Hello!
When we make the dogsled tours we mostly focus on that. If we add two nights at Kebnekaise for a climber, we need an extra guide from station. I don’t have good enough of experience for the high alpine climbe. The other thing is that I need to stay around the dogs. Then we had to add an extra cost and the price is high already today.
If you want to climb Kebnekaise I would recommend you to make that to a separate trip. Stay at Kebnekaise for a couple of days. Waiting for good weather and make the trip with one of their guides. That’s better and safer.
I hope I see you up in the north one day.
/Matti
While climbing Keb or the other higher peaks is not really hard for any experienced mountain hiker during summer and autumn, it is a rather tough and unforgiving climb during winter. As Matti and Stina mentioned, the dogs have to stay behind during the climb and have to be taken care of. Also I would add that you never have any guarantees regarding weather conditions. So you might have to dig in in the snow half way up and wait for a day or two if the weather gets angry at you. So it would be a rather unpredictable adventure that in combination with some 25 dogs waiting for you somewhere below would make the whole thing a planning nightmare for the tour itself but also with respect to the tours following that trip and the flight schedules of the guests who are stuck on the mountain. ;-)
For Keb you would probably approach from Singi/Sälka towards Kaffedalen and then join the västra leden to the top I could imagine. Sounds like an exciting expedition with a dogsled if it wasn't for the planning nightmare when this is part of a business ;-)
🎄☃️
What dog sleds do you use for the customers? Is it different from your own?
All of them are Skonk sleds.
My sled is a sitt sled with possibilities to have a trailer behind. My guests have a basic type that is more ‘forgiving’ to drive.
/Matti
@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA Ok, I will check them out 😁 thanks for the reply! Looking forward to your next video
If you want to abbreviate Siberian Husky, please call it "Siberian" instead of "Husky". This is because ``Husky'' is a general term for all sled dogs, so Alaskan Malamutes, Samoyeds, Eskimo dogs, and Alaskan Huskies can all be called ``Huskies.'' by: From someone who cares about Siberian Huskies.
You are totally correct! That’s a good point!!!
Very often Siberian huskies is connected with a dog that’s not god as sled dog and huskies are dogs breeded for work. Therefore I say huskies because our Siberians are breeded as sled dogs.
But of course it’s kind of obvious in our videos what we are doing with the dogs so maybe I should start calling them Siberians!
Interesting!!!
I think I have to start to call them Siberians. If I forgot this in the future, please, remind me. ‘It’s sometimes difficult to learn old dogs to sit’ as we say in Sweden.
😀
/Matti
The dogs are SO Happy to run, to be with their owner, and are well taken care of. A bored uncared for dog is sad.
I just hope these areas are forbidden for any motorized vehicle, unless excemption patrol or rescue. It‘s so sad to see where people trump with their overlander 4, 2 and more wheels over globally, thinking they have the right to roll over nature wildly and brag and post about it pushing more to join them. We had roads for that made, now they avoid roads and gor straight across protected nature.
Well put.
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada, U.S.A.
Some parts of the mountain area it's forbidden with snowmobiles, others not.
You are not allowed to drive off-road at all in Sweden, so no cars here or anywhere else in the wilderness.
STOP THIS NEEDLESS TORTURE OF YOUR DOGS!! WHY WHY??
I don't know much about dogsledding, but whenever I see huskies pulling a sled I get the impression the dogs actually quite like that sort of action. Almost as if they had been bred for that. Hm.
Hello!
I can see what you see in one way. That’s true that all sled dogs doesn’t have a great life. I have seen a lot of bad treatment from dog owners and dog mushers. That’s painful.
…but I can also see a lot of pet dogs that have a terrible life. No activity and no tribe. That’s also painful to see. Some of these pet dogs are super fat and half dead. :-(
What we are doing is to try to make this a good example of how you can work with your dogs. We also give people the possibility to learn more about dogs.
Stina and I live in a small house, 50sqm, and we are not driving fancy cars or anything like that. We spend a fortune for high quality dogfood, good equipment, good kennel with kennel houses for the dogs, and we spend several hours a day with our dogs. Every single day! This is what we are living for. We almost never leave the kennel to someone else so we can go for a holiday.
The work they are doing is what they love! All huskies doesn’t love this, of course. For this dogs we find new homes as pet huskies or sofa huskies. You know… there exists huskies that don’t like snow! :-)
Our dogs have a good life.
Check out our videos from the kennel and see how we take care of them and check our Instagram (Jokkmokkguiderna) account, and you will see some of our daily updates.
Take care, and thanks for caring about our dogs!!! They are really something special!
/Matti
It is true there are black sheep among mushers who might make it a nightmare for the dogs. I have seen that, also in Sweden. But when you are on tour with Matti & Stina you realize that the dogs love what they are doing. We take care of some of their retired dogs and they are the happiest when they are on adventures. For some it is actually torture when they cannot go on the tours anymore due to injury or age. Also, Matti and Stina never force dogs to work if they lose their motivation for some reason. All the dogs on tour with them are more than eager do go!
2 "thumbs down". Yours is one of the very few "negatives" I've read on this youtube channel & I've been a subscriber for over 3 years.
@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA For the record, Stina/Matti have designed, engineered & built their kennels which open from one side, are spacious, & are easy to keep clean. Dogs in their kennels are not allowed to fight with each other.
