- This is a review of the lightweight backpack Seek Outside Unaweep 4800. Will this be my last backpack? Many people say that this is the last and only backpack you need. I have used mine since summer 2021 and now after many tours I can give an honest and trustworthy review of it. Seek Outside is a company from Colorado who make some really great outdoor gear. They produce all their outdoor products in US and not like other outdoor companies that produce their gear in China or other countries with cheap and sometimes suspicious working conditions.
Unaweep 4800 is a 79 liter ultralight backpack with a weight of only 1,3 kg when it’s stripped and 2 kg with all accessories. It’s made for you who want to carry loads from 15 up to 50 kg. It’s a really heavy duty backpack. It can be used on hiking tours, packrafting, thru hikes, climbing and is an appreciated hunting backpack as well.
You also have an even bigger version of this backpack which is the Seek Outside Unaweep 6300, of 103 liter.

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA A pint of beer in the USA is considerably smaller than a pint of ale in the UK. Plus most beer in the US hardly contains any alcohol ;-)
Another thing with buying these kinds of high quality products is supporting small businesses. In a day and age where companies are getting larger and larger it's nice to support the little guys who are still making gear with authenticity. I just pulled the trigger on a Seek Outside Divide pack, quite a similar style to the Unaweep (minus the talon system) it seems. I've got an older (2014?) Lowe Alpine Cerro Torre 65:85L but my most recent hiking trip brought about the decision to move towards retiring it. It's exterior is super tough (630D nylon) but it's damn heavy @ 2.9kg.
I Totally agree about the small company!!! That’s so important. It’s usually people who do what they’re dreaming about. They make it with their heart and not only for the money. They are also very often located in the countryside where each employee is super important.

Nice review. I have the 6300 version myself in the UltraPE400 fabric. Pack with talon, toplid, lumbar pad, hipbelt pockets, 2 inch extesion and loadshelf on the bottom it weighs 1,75kg. Very nice pack. I took a testwalk for 1,5 hour with 21kg load and it was really comfortable to carry. Had 24 kg on my last packraft trip but just walked short distances. Feels better to carry such weight in Unaweep compared to my Osprey Xenith 88. I have seam seal it but not been out in heavy rain yet on the packraft I got some drops of water in the talon as its way laying on the spraycover with water on it. Rest were dry inside. Thats before seam sealing. It takes some time to seam seal all but u dont do it often. Really recommend this pack even its expensive. Mostly waterproof, lightweight and really comfortable. Bought it to replace my Norrøna 125l, saves me 3 kilos on the pack itself.

@@yawara600 I think Recon will handle real heavy loads better, its a more robust frame. But thats 30 kilo and more. I havent tried them side by side though. But I bought the Unaweep to avoid 30+. Rigged for 4 days with a 285 raft its 24-25 kilos. Frame is rated for 100 kgs. It feels stable the carry. From the recon u may miss having two large sidepockets. One talon is smaller. I bougth the mesh talon as well. Think it works to mount both on the pack. Pack is flexible. When I had the packbag with the raft on top I mounted the top lid on the back instead, also useful if biking. Sidepockets are better than Recon. Fits tubes, padles, waterbottles at the same time. Its take som time to set the torso length proper, thats much easier on Recon. But when set u dont change it. Dont know your heigth. Im 187 and the 2 inch extesions worked best for me.

Thanks for the review. I have older version and after 5 years it still keeps going. I chose mesh pocket instead of talon and love it. I have no cons whatsoever for this backpack. If this ever breaks I will consider newer model just as you said

Yes...it's also important to avoid some equipment. Everything is not for everybody.

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA Yeah I did, unfortunately they don't have it right now. I might buy the Kenai instead. but it's 300 extra gram. I'm guessing that I'd need to buy a talon on the 4800 anyway so it's about 150-200g difference?

This test came in perfect time. I am in the process of buying a new backpack, I have seen some reviews of this brand, maybe not exactly the same model. I also used the old external frame backpack, I had the Fjällräven Raven Gyro and I had a frametop extender, about 15 cm extra to put a tent or something. I agree that the hip belt at that time was not so good even though Fjällräven claimed that their gyro system was an improvement. It was but still not so good. I got a Berghaus Vulcan and the hipbelt was a bit better, The fabric was not that good in long term, it started to feel kind of rubberlike and almost a bit like breaking down. since 7-8 year I have a Norrönna Reccon 125 l, it weighs 4,4 kg empty ! but its really comfortable carrying heavy load with. I am getting older though (hard to avoid in the long run...) I am 60+ so I am looking for the Unaweep 4800 or maybe the 6300. Your review is as always really good and detailed
Fjällräven Gyro was really good but noisy. 😀 ...and Norröna... 4.4kg... that's a lot!!!
I think you will get the feeling of 'coming home' if you get a Seek Outside. BUT... there is some adjustment with all the strings you have to do before you will be happy with the backpack. Just give it a few days and then you will love it!

For me it came a couple of months to late, i just got mine and would i known that the seams wasn't sealed i would have asked them to do it so i wouldn't need to.

Jag har nu haft min Unaweep 4800 i ca 15 månader och är så fantastiskt nöjd. Vikten i förhållande till hållfasthet och robusthet är för mig otroligt bra. Lätt att variera och justera och jag använder den till vandring, jakt och allt där i mellan.
Har använ seekoutside i flera år nu och har egentligen inget att gnälla på. En ryggsäck för allt egentligen. 4500/800 är en perfekt storlek oxå! Som vanligt en bra review! Ha de bäst//Johan

Bra tipps i din senaste film om hur man kan använda remmarna för att släppa ryggsäcken direkt på packraften! Riktigt bra!!!

Absolutely agree with you about the frame and "old sttle" backpacks. The modern ones are just not capable of carrying loads for long trips that include water and food.

I also own a Unaweep 4800...It is the green XPAC material which i believe is a bit heavier denier.
I have had this pack for a couple years now and i have become quite fond of it due to its build quality and versatility....I also love the old style gear...one of my favorite packs has been the Swedish military LK35 a most simple and easy to use rucksack!...also very inexpensive...Cheers from Montana...MTwoods
Old Swedish military gear is usually very good price. They had one 60liters and you could easily make some modifications so it will be more comfortable and lighter.

…as a German in Sweden, I got to love Fjällräven. For different reasons but mostly because of their robustness, quality materials and making as well as practicality and comfort in carrying. I have an Abisko, Kajka and a Keb (both with wooden frame). I just bought a Deuter for daily adventures, also quite nice from my first impressions…. Very different looks though.
I agree... Kajkanten is robust. It's almost 4kg and you can probably hide behind it if a russin tank attack you. 😉

I'm certain I bought my last backpack 2 years ago when I purchased a ÜLA Ohm 2.0; it's everything I want/need in a backpack & it fits MEeee like it had been custom made just for lil ole MEeee (5' 3" & 105#).

Personally I prefer military packs (Savotta/Tasmanian Tiger/Mystery Ranch). Mostly because of their extreme flexibility. I generally get a 45-60 liter pack, then I pick up 2 to 3 12 liter pouches which can be attached to the side and/or back of the pack, which lets me expand it out to 80-100 liters when I want more space, or take them off again when I don't need it. These packs can also carry 50+kg, and they are tough as hell, for only slightly more weight (2-3kg). I can also add medical pouches, canteen pouches, stuff sacks to the belt or rear of the pack too.
I have never used that kind of tactical backpacks before. Maybe I should try one of them one day.

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA Well if you do, I would look mainly at Savotta Jääkäri L or XL. I also like the Tasmanian Tiger Base Pack 52.
What's your normal pack weight heading in? What's the max weight you could carry in a hunting pack 10 miles a day if you had 2? What's the heaviest you've carried for 10 plus miles to date and what carrying system did you use? I'm shooting for 100 pounds 10 miles a day 30 days for thru hiking. Will start at 100 pounds end at 60 be carrying 40 pounds of food I won't be hunting. I figured I'd as a hunter because of how heavy Thier packs are compared to thru hikers.
I have used Savotta backpacks with outer frame. Savotta 725, Savotta 906 and now i have Savotta Jääkäri XL. Jääkäri XL is modern backpack and very good for heavy loads, and weighs about 4kg without outer pockets. My heaviest load with Jääkäri Xl was 34kg+ my camera gear. I have been thinking to buy Osprey Aether Pro, its only 1.8kg 🤔
Jag fick min Unaweep 4800 någon vecka innan denna review, valde att köpa den öppningsbara med dragkedja i hela säckens längd, dragkedjan är vattentät ;) men ingen av alla sömmar som gjorts, rätt oförklarligt att sömmarna inte är tejpade eller siliconbehandlade.
Tack för ännu en klockren review, en av de få som man kan lita på.
Jag förstår heller inte riktigt grejen med att sälja tält och ryggsäckar som inte är 'färdiga' på nått sätt. 😀

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA Jag nämner inga namn men det finns "UA-camrs" med förhållandevis många följare som aldrig haft något direkt dåligt att säga om de produkter de använder på sina äventyr, de går ofta genom utrustningen innan i en separat vlog, sedan utför de äventyret och då nämner de hur bra produkterna är, och de har testat flera "Seekoutside" ryggsäckar och även deras tält och kaminer, och aldrig har de nämnt att ryggsäcken läker in vatten via sömmar och aldrig att de behöver tätas i sömmarna, däremot så säger de hur perfekta de är vid packrafting bl.a. då de är gjorda i vattentätt material. Det är så genomskinligt att det är för att de är sponsrade, måste man inte ange det om man testar produkter? Man kanske kommer runt det då man pratar om produkten "i förbifarten" då vloggen huvudsakligen handlar om vandringen / paddlingen de är på! Fortsätt på er linje, hoppas fler upptäcker er, både er UA-cam kanal men även bokar in er för äventyr, de som har möjlighet att följa med er på äventyr får minnen för livet!

weight. The modern soft frame packs just don't carry comfortably.
Lundhags also make a backpack that's very Ridgid. I think it's probably the best option in Europe for the price, just the frame is a little tall for shorter people.
Lundhags make lots of great gear but the backpacks are very heavy or have they changed that today?

@@fragu123 Many people choose the Fjallraven Kajka. From personal experience I can't 100% recommend it but when you can get it cheap or used it's certainly a great pack for serious Lappland trekking, much better than most of the competitors. I found the Lundhags Gnaur is just a tad better in carrying weight and functionality of the bag. Gnaur is also 1kg lighter if that matters to you. The problem with Scandinavian or modern trekking packs in general is the frame height, and the "one-size fits all" loose or ill fitting waist belt and shoulder harrness. If you don't have the perfect body for the pack there is not much you can do.
@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA I weight the 75L version Lundhags at 3050g when I tested it. Certainly heavy compared to yours. The weight is mostly in the frame though which sits close to your back. Our American made packframe backpacks we use are even heavier than that (close to 4kg) but they feel lighter when loaded with weight.
I bought an used seekoutside precipice xpax x51 5800 and completed it with new spectragrid belt,2 beltpockets,talon,toplid,2wingspan pockets. If i want it can be huuuge but it can easily be very small an nimble in second s. I like seekoutside products but to compare with an old swedish exterior frame backpack from 1998 haglöfs alaska with special belt it fades away in durability,build quality except for the newer better fabric in bag itself.
If to carry about 15-20kg I think seek is better but for the heavy loads i would choose haglöfs grönlandsram or even the stiff heavy norröna recon.
I don’t know if Haglöfs Grönland is stiffer than Seek Outside Unaweep… It’s anyway two good backpacks!
