  • I'm a giant Disney's Parks fan, today I'm talking about my favorite attraction, the Enchanted Tiki Room, and making a Dole Whip
    **********************************
I'm kind of a giant Walt Disney World Fan and I love me some Dole Whip. The Dole Whip, if you're not familiar, is a soft serve ice cream confection, usually pineapple flavored, that is served just outside of Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room. It has a rabid fanbase just desperate to get more of that magic dole whip awesomeness all year long- and now you can! I've got a perfect dole whip recipe you can mix up at home all on your own. I add rum to mine, but that's totally not necessary. In fact, the rum changes the consistency to more of a shake and less of an ice cream. It turns out, this is pretty darn simple to make. The Enchanted Tiki Room is probably my favorite attraction, so I talk about it quite a bit here, and also Walt Disney's history with the attraction and a bit about its strange history in the park too.
    Dole Whip
    16 oz. or 450 g. Frozen Pineapple
2.6 oz. or 77 ml. coconut milk
    3 tbs or 36 g. sugar
    pinch of salt
1 tsp or 5 ml. lemon juice
1 tsp. or 5 ml. lime juice
2 oz. or 60 ml. rum (OPTIONAL)
    Garnish with pineapple
    and an umbrella!

I very vaguely remember the Enchanted Tiki Room as a kid and being pretty entranced by that and places like the Rainforest Cafe. I can't remember the name of the place, but there was a wildlife education center that had a reptile exhibit with this intricate tiki design, and weather effects every so often that I went to as a little girl that enthralled me beyond anything. Though I became obsessed with ships and pirates, jungle islands, tropical caves, and the sea in general instead of specifically that Tiki vibe.
Hilariously, that also sort of took a back burner to heavy metal when I hit that goth phase of mine, got really into anime, and wore a lot of band shirts of bands way before my time.

I actually made this! I think you are right the whole banana makes it a little too banana flavored. I added. 0.2 more ounces of rum by weight, and added roughly a tsp of vanilla which actually brought out more of the pineapple flavor, I found. You could add heavy cream, whipped to medium peaks if you didn’t want the coconut flavor but actually it’s quite nice. I also found that if you add the rum, you can make it in advance for a large crowd and just whip it a bit more for service. Because of the alcohol, the concoction doesn’t freeze up all the way!

In my experience, the Dole Whips available in WDW have little to no coconut flavor in them.
Also, Trader Sam's Grog Grotto at the Polynesian resort makes what they call a "Spiky Pineapple," which is basically a rum infused Dole Whip smoothie. Delicious!

We do use tablespoons and teaspoons in recipes in the rest of the world as well, at least for approximate measures such as sugar and salt. Only for very large amounts (e.g. 500g sugar) or very precise amounts (when yo need an exact weight ratio etc) we use weight.

Love the Tiki room boss, 100% with you on it being an inspiration. I grew up in Florida and live in New York now, and the Tiki Room music is one of those things that brings me right back to being a little kid again.

  • @jamieking79

Believe-It-Or-Not (another attraction I liked as a kid!), my mom and recently retired Dad cop 🚓 in 1977 bought a motel to run called “The Twin Tiki Inn” ...wait for... in far western KY!!😂!! It had a restaurant/diner on premises which my sister and I worked in on weekends while we attended Murray State thru the week. The goal was a happy family operation but it was less than that! The local bowling hall owner summed it up perfectly! On Sunday’s, when just the family worked, he said “Breakfast is free...you pay $2.50 to see the fight!”🤣 Love your show, Greg!
