Looks great, I am a mad keen Wotancraft user for many year, currently have the Trooper in large and use it to death...it's still going strong and fits my whole Z kit in Plus some. I have just bought a X-Pro3 and the 23/2, probably get another prime but thats about it and usually carry some kind of film camera with one lens so I think the small Pilot would be an amazing baby brother to the Trooper :)

Did you end up buying the pilot 7l? I just placed my order for the pilot 7l to use with my xpro3, 16/2.8, 50/2. And it looked to be a great option. Hoping it is as good as it looks.

As much as I love the Trooper, I have it in medium, I'm not convinced by this bag, even if I like the colour.
The lid has dropped the very useful magnet closing from the Trooper, which I love, and that little buckle doesn't inspire me.
The Molle, PALS type system is a nice idea, but not very well thought out with the plastic pouch clips.. These pouches get a fair amount of tension and torsion on the fixing points in use (I have them fitted to a military backpack I use) and if they are not solidly fitted the do come off.. To get the strongest attachment they are usually sewn horizontally on the pack, and you weave a tough webbing through several rows to get a solidly fixed pouch.. Don't think I would trust these..
It just looks as if they have cut corners on this bag, which I haven't seen evidence of on previous lines..

I like the quick on/off capability that the annex clips allow for the pouches. Despite being plastic those clips usually offer a pretty sturdy connection. My issue with them is that with one strip of vertical PALS webbing you're attaching a 5" wide pouch centered on that 1" strip. Depending on how heavy an item you have in the pouch, that could let the pouch wobble around the center point and possibly subject the clip to force in a direction where it has the potential to come undone. Unlikely to happen, but still something I would wonder about. If they had more PALS you could attach the pouches at more points for increased stability. However, that would make the front of the bag look more tactical style and you'd have to keep track of more attachment hardware, both of which are things I think the maker is trying to avoid and I can appreciate that choice.
About the latch fastener for the main compartment: the setup is such one could easily replace it with a repair-style SRB or different buckle/clip/snap loop setup of their choice. Same goes for the shoulder strap. Put a metal shackle of appropriate size in the should strap attachment points on the bag and then one could clip on any shoulder strap they like, which is probably how I'd go to use a quick adjust messenger style strap.
I quite like the style and features of this bag. By and large it appears well considered and executed.

Hey there any updates on how these bags are in the field? We all know how on the desk a bag look really good but in the field on a hustle and bustle project we quickly find how great or frustrating they can be.

@@AskMOTT thank u for taking time to get back to me. Lockdowns have really put a wrench in a lot of things some places more then others. Glad you got to get out and shoot. That had to feel good. How does this compare to the trooper especially if you are switching lenses often like at an event. I currently only have one body. (As soon as I can afford a second I will get one) so at some events I am changing lenses a bit. FYI I shoot Fuji and find the 50-140 gets a fair amount of use so having a bag that can hold that yet be easy lens swap with that would be awesome. Thanks in advance!

Was really looking forward to this video. The khaki looks great! I ended up going with the black color in size Medium and got mine last week. It's my first Wotancraft bag so I can't compare to the feel of their previous bags, but I will say I'm very impressed with how light the bag is and all the nice little touches (honestly I didn't even notice the secret pocket, so thanks for finding that lol). Like you, my definite favorite feature is the modularity. I got both of the external modular pouches and see myself using them similarly to how you described at the end of the video; mainly as a small carry when I want to travel extra light. But I also really appreciate the ability to attach them to the bag for extra storage when it's needed. I'm actually quite surprised at how spacious the medium size is... I think it could easily fit a DSLR or mirrorless + 2-3 extra lenses depending on size. I mainly plan to use the bag as a daily bag for work but love the ability to throw my M with a lens in there and have room to spare, or the ability to carry a couple cameras plus 1-2 lenses to go out and shoot.
While the lack of metal hardware and leather on the bag gives it a bit less of a "premium" look/feel, I am very happy with the weight savings and think the function of the bag is really fantastic and makes up for some of the sacrifices in "form (not to say it's a bad looking bag... it's actually pretty slick). I kind of wish the main flap had magnets like on the Trooper to allow the lid to stay closed when the main latch isn't being used, as I can see the latch being a little bit fiddly if you need quick access but still want a little bit of security in the form of magnets to keep the lid from swinging open.
Looking forward to hear your thoughts (especially compared to the Trooper) after you have a chance to put it to use!

    • @AskMOTT

sh0ebox21 Thanks for watching and congrats on your purchase :). Yeah I love the modular system , super excited to put it to use as I can see using it so many different ways. I agree about that latch , it did take some fiddling. My guess about not having the magnets it’s a compromise for safety because the main bag compartment doesn’t have a zipper(which I’m fine with) but if it was just magnetic it would be too easy to steal stuff out of for people that are worried about that.

    • @sh0ebox21
      @sh0ebox21 3 роки тому

@@AskMOTT Yeah for sure. But having the magnets plus the latch (similar to how the Trooper has magnets plus the Chicago screws) would be great!

Gustavo Monasterios Thanks for watching Gustavo, the smaller bag is 7L without the module attachments and on their website it says it can fit 1 DSLR and 2 lenses along with a 9.7 inch iPad. I’d say for a Leica kit you could add out two Leica M’s with lenses on them.

Gustavo Monasterios It might be snug in the main compartment depending on the size of your lenses but it could either tear in top or you could easily slide it into one of the elastic side compartments.

Justin, ya think they will ever take the pilot line like the trooper and do a third size? Would love one in a 5L size as just a day walkabout bag. The smallest troop is 5.xL but like the pilot style better and the small troop is still too big for what I want. I know first world problem right? Make me a 4.75L pilot with one side pocket only on right side outside cause I load cross body load on left shoulder. Not like I am asking for a stuffed unicorn doll to ship with. 😜

I mean who wants to click on a website to get boring statistics about capacity and exact dimensions, let me watch someone tell me about that :).
