Use the Surface Area of a Cylinder formula (A=2πrh+2πr^2) to solve for the Surface Area.
See all Surface Area lessons: vividmath.com/...
    Steps:
    1. Find the radius of the cylinder. Simply divide the diameter by 2 (recall that the radius is equal to half the diameter)
    2. Substitute the known values (radius and height) into the Surface Area of a Cylinder Formula (A=2πrh+2πr^2) and solve.

Ok, let me ask you, where did he go wrong in the equation? He stated at the beginning that the cylinder had a open lid, which means we don't count the 2 of the equation, 2 pi R squared, which leaves us with only pi R squared, the rest can be done on calculator. If I am wrong, please point it out, because I'd like to know.
Edit: The 2 would stand for the two lids of the cylinder.
