    Very educational video! Beautiful garden! I have 2 young trees monkey puzzle trees that are supposedly can only tolerate down to zone 7, I’m in zone 6b southeastern Pennsylvania Lancaster. I have one in ground since last year mid summer and it’s still alive. Last year’s winter was pretty brutal we were hit it with some sort of cyclone that dropped the temperature down to -16F which is more than a monkey puzzle tree can tolerate and normally our temperatures is down 10F on a normal early cold morning it’s still alive with some winter damage but still going strong.

    Good Morning Paul, It is very interesting to see your tropical plants, it gives us all the confidence to plant some in our more frosty zones. I put a canna in to trial last year thanks to your videos and I just had to pause and run out to see how it was going... the slugs are eating it! (out to the shed I go to get the bait) MINUS 10 last winter? Wow, that is so much colder than your last few years. Lots of lovely crisp snow would have been quite novel. I love the Colocasia Pink China, I've never heard of it. It is beautiful. You could be a little bit more nurturing of the banana stems this winter!... you are a tough man! 😜😱 Although you might be quite mild this year, you just don't know. 🙂

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  8 місяців тому +1

      Morning Margaret, my goodness - how big are your slugs to take on a canna?!
      How has your canna done this last year?
      It would be nice if we had one of our ‘usual’ mild Winters this year - especially after the cold of last Winter that took everyone in Britain by surprise.

    • @margaretmichelsen766
      @margaretmichelsen766 8 місяців тому

      hahaha not TOO big but it is the sheer number of slugs at the moment. My god these Australian slugs can eat!! It takes a long time for the canna to flower then we get frosts again. It may do better this year, it's going to be very warm. We don't normally get this warm before Christmas. Please may we have a tour of your perennials that you planted from plug stock before the end of Autumn or a back garden tour in general?

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  8 місяців тому +1

      Sometimes in Britain the cannas flower really late in the season if we haven’t had a hot summer. I’ve been fortunate in that all the cannas have flowered every year. I suppose the long days up North helps.
      I really must think about perennials more - I don’t have a ‘plan’ with them - some get cut back if I’m passing and others get to keep their foliage till a quick tidy up in early Spring. I’ll try and do another late Autumn tour but of course most things will be looking a bit tatty then lol!

    Hi Paul thanks for another informative video. Not only do we see beautiful plants in your garden ,we also learn how to care for them. I’m curious about the persicaria. Hi Douglas, good ‘ol Persicaria! I’ve just done some googling and I read it’s hardy to -4 f is that any good for your Winters?
      I would say give it a go. Worse case scenario keep a bit in an outhouse or so in the winter - plant it out in your Spring and it will quickly do its thing and look great for you very quickly. Yes, it spreads but is easy to pull out. I like it - it’s not a Prima Donna! Good luck.

    Thank you for such an educational video! A few years ago I started leaving some of my dahlia tubers in the ground. It is a little bit risky but I am willing to take the risk because I do not have any expensive dahlias. I have been lucky so far. I live in zone 7b.

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  8 місяців тому

      That’s interesting you have over-wintered dahlias in the ground in zone 7b - remind me what your soil is like - I think it’s loamy and well draining?

    • @englishwithanerudite
      @englishwithanerudite 8 місяців тому

      @@paultsworld It's bone dry, extremely poor, sandy and slightly acidic (I think). We no longer have real winters here; I remember it used to start snowing in November, even in late October, and the temperature went down to minus 10, 20, sometimes minus 30 degrees Celsius. We often couldn't open the gate in the morning because of the amount of snow that had fallen at night. The snow usually melted in late February or early March. Nowadays there's hardly any snow at all and the temperature is usually just a few degrees below/above zero. Dahlias wouldn't have stood a chance back then.

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  8 місяців тому

      @@englishwithanerudite I can see now how your dahlias are OK in the ground with it being a dry soil. I wonder if now you are still in zone 7a. People round the world are talking of their area ‘moving up’ a zone. From 2012 to 2021 I was probably 9b but last Winter was a 9a maybe even an 8b! Lol good job it’s taken over at least a 20 year period - otherwise we’d be changing zones every Winter!

    • @englishwithanerudite
      @englishwithanerudite 8 місяців тому

      @@paultsworld You're right, I might have changed the zone. The lack of snow equals the lack of water in the soil in spring and the much lower level of ground water. All the old wells in private gardens are now completely dry here. The only plus of the situation is that I can save a bit on the heating.

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  8 місяців тому

      As you say, the change in the snow levels and climate has ramifications all along the line. I am amazed that your Winters are getting so mild even in continental Europe far away from the coast. I remember you once saying that some of the birds are changing migration habits. We have blackcaps over winter in the garden now, when in the past they migrated to Africa for the Winter.

    Thanks Paul for a very interesting video. My cannas are in pots 😢. I live in the North of France zone 9b oceanic, I think it would be wise to take them in if there are cold temperatures forecast. What do you think?

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  8 місяців тому +2

      That's an interesting question Kim. As you know, all mine in the ground stay OK where they are. However all the ones in pots are cut down and go into the garage.
      I did leave one big pot (barrel) with a glorious and massive musifolia - banana-leaf canna mostly outside and then I thought better of it half way through Winter and managed to roll it into the shed. I lost it! It went to mush. It was the heavy rain that did it in, not the cold. I should have given it a fighting chance by covering it with a tarpaulin to let it get - and stay - fairly dry.
      If you can take them into an unheated place, then that would be safest - otherwise I would mulch and cover them to stop the rain and worst of the cold. They don't want to be bone dry - like dahlias - but I don't water mine in the garage - I just trust that the residual moisture will see them through - which it always has...so far.
