  • I take you on a guided garden tour to show what has been happening this Autumn. The tame robin joins us to show off his new plumage and to be fed.
    At the end of the video I have a little quiz - I'll show some video footage of my September trip to the USA - see how many locations you can identify - some are easy and some probably only a local resident will recognise!
    My English Garden is near the coast in North-West England, 1/3 of an acre (including the house) Zone 9a with sandy soil.

    You’ve been missed Paul. Your garden looks amazing. There’s a robin that comes to see us when we’re out in the garden here in Hertfordshire but he isn’t brave enough to eat mealworms from my hand yet. Guess I’ll have to be patient. ❤

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  8 місяців тому +3

      That’s very nice of you Ellie.
      How nice you have a robin - if the robin is about, flick a mealworm towards it - he’ll see it. I say flick because throwing tends to scare them. Slowly he’ll start expecting the food and get closer.
      I say ‘he’ because I think it’s the males that tend to be keener on ‘free’ food.
      Good luck

    Good to see you back Paul. I was wondering if you were okay. Garden is looking really lovely and the Hydrangeas have loved the rain this summer and I too love the arch you've created with the Viburnum and I've always liked your Bill Mckenzie Clematis. Even its seed heads are spectacular. I expect your little Robin missed you when you were away. Mine has disappeared but a new one (assume it's a different one as his red feathers look unkempt) has arrived but keeps his distance. Thanks for showing us some of the places that most of us won't get to visit and I hope you enjoyed your time away even though most of it was for work.

      Feels good to be back Wendy. Fortunately I had neighbours who came in every day and fed the robin - they are now saying they miss him! He’s anybody’s for a mealworm so probably didn’t realise it wasn’t me lol
      My robin has his new smart Winter coat, hopefully, now Winter is on its way you’ll be able to make friends with your new robin - mealworms at the ready!
      I really enjoyed this trip - it all went well and I got plenty of footage plus all new places for me so really interesting.

      I wonder if it is the soil? My soil is sandy below the compost so it drains very well - makes it too dry in the Summer but at least nothing rots. Azaleas need ericaceous compost - what sort of soil do you have?

      Yes, you have reassured me that it might be best to further amend the soil with perlite. I was used to clay soil. With this house, the soil is more loamy. So, I didn't further amend except with Holly tone. However, I applied a fungicide right before the winter. If a few survive to next season, will dig them up and plant them higher in soil amended with perlite. It might take a while to sort out the right mix

    It's always great to see you and robin back Paul. It is lovely to be accompanied by a garden bird, I had a dove drop in for the summer, she would wait for food in the morning and even climb onto my hand, then she'd hang around the garden all day, walk about where I was gardening and fly off for the night after an evening feed. She disappeared 2 weeks ago, so I'm hoping she found a mate. Can't wait to see the following videos, especially since I bought 2 cannas bulbs last spring and need to know what to do next. Wow, You're back !! Good to see you, your garden and the lovely little robin, of course. I THINK he really missed you while you were away... ( or was it the meal worms? no! he seemed to have missed his human.) Wow, so many beautiful plants so late in the season. Zorro is looking particularly good. The bananas have done well. Is the Ensete a false banana? The perennials are all looking magnificent. We are having a good Spring here. I have managed to purchase some perennials I have been envying watching UK and US gardens, so very happy gardener here. Brown snakes have come out of hibernation this week around the house. Got swooped by a magpie on my run today. A bit scary. I wish our wildlife could be a little more genteel.

      Hi Margaret, thank you for the welcome back. I arranged for two neighbours to come and feed the robin every day - they say they miss him now lol. I wonder if he noticed it wasn't me or was he concentrating on the mealworms? Yes, you're correct it is the false banana - Ethiopian banana.
      Well done getting some new perennials - I suppose they, along with shrubs, are the mainstay of the garden - I love the speed they grow. That large rudbeckia I showed was a small plant I bought in the Spring, it grew to full height and flowered this Summer.
      Our wildlife is very genteel - I feed the hedgehog every night and it trots across the garden expectantly. Just wish we had more wildlife - I actually love snakes but not very keen on your varieties lol. Aren't 8 of the 10 most poisonous snakes in the world found in Oz? I remember many years ago spending 2 weeks camping out under the stars, lying on the tent not bothering to put it up - in the Red Centre, Kings Canyon/Alice Springs area and only thinking of snakes when back home!

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  8 місяців тому

      I would certainly encourage you to get more hydrangeas as they are low maintenance and have a long period of interest.
      That’s a good point about the birds moulting and getting their new feathers ready for winter - my robin was quite bedraggled after the nesting season and is now in good condition again.
      I expected plenty of sparrows in the box as there are always quite a gang of them in the beech hedge - and I did get one sparrow nesting each year but now no sparrows nest there - I don’t know where they do nest, perhaps in the hedge - and now a pair of blue tits take up residence each year.

      I'll be waiting till just on the first frosts - then I'll take all the leaves off and put the pot in the garage till April. That seems to work OK as they don't need any light when they haven't got leaves and are dormant. You could also take cuttings and put them in water in the house over Winter. I think doing both is a good idea.

      Burada yağmur yağıyor ama çoğu insanın düşündüğü kadar değil. Bazen kurak yazlar yaşarız.
      Bir iş bulduğun için tebrikler. Umarım işinizden keyif alırsınız.

      I would have loved to also visit Idaho - unfortunately not enough time on this visit.

      Hello Ulke, I think a basil flower would be a good idea!
      Merhaba Ülke, fesleğen çiçeğinin iyi bir fikir olacağını düşünüyorum!
      Ne yazık ki ev bakıcısına ihtiyacı olan kimseyi tanımıyorum; belki bu tür işlerde uzmanlaşmış bir ajansı deneyebilirsiniz. İyi şanlar.
