Nice intro explaining what's to follow. And the chapters are great for follow up views. Really appreciate the thought and attention you put to these videos, let alone all the expert tips.
I was sick for a week or two . . . . feeling better now. I want to finish the Firefly FFST video I have been working on this weekend. We will see if I can finish the demo stuff and get it edited and uploaded... The FFDC has been on hold due to Guitars in the shop for service. They are always first to get worked on.
I can tell from your reviews of this model, from the way you missed it when you sold it off, AND from the care you are taking in this whole process that this must be one of your FAVORITE Firefly models! I am really looking forward to seeing the final result!!!!!
Great Luthier Tips... I noticed that you took more time to tape off file sand and polish the Frets... Than most other UA-cam Channels . Which IMO is the difference between a Yougo Pinto and A Ferrari attention to detail. Very impressive.. My wife and I are looking at a couple of guitars for mods . So can't wait to try some of your tips.. looking at a complete redo of a Glarry guitar that will be new pickups new electronics new tuners new switch new string's... Changing out the hardware as well With Rail Pickups from Fleor Guyker Hardware. Black knobs tunners bridge . New Fret Job.. possibly change the Frets to 6 mm don't know yet . Have a Chipson each we are interested in new electronics new hardware if needed Fret work if needed.... Can't wait to see how the Firefly turns out. Cheers 🍻 🥃🥃 🎸🎵🎶
Ya .... some of my first videos of me taping off the necks ... I did get some comments about using too much tape .... LOL and comments saying it looked like a mummy in blue tape... LOL I did forget to fold the blue tape on itself so you could grab it... That save a lot of time. I think my other videos show that. The neck of the guitar is the connection point between You and the Guitar. It has the most impact on how you react to the guitar. How it feels is 90% the neck. Take your time do a good job. 2 or 3 more hours here will give you years of enjoyment in playing it. This guitar will be a Super Player when done. Thanks for sharing and always commenting! it help me understand what you guys like and want to see. Thanks Again!
How's it coming along? You know Sam Deek's fret leveling method? He leaves the guitar in tune and neck relief adjusted, uses a tensioned double action truss rod in the square housing as a sanding beam and goes one string at a time. I may give it a go on a cast-away neck and see how I make out
Absolutely. I just did a small area with fine sand paper and the results were amazing. But I think the paper gets pretty dirty. I think a compound is necessary.
The compound will give it the glass smooth finish.... Remember to tape off your neck... the most important thing to take your time on. protect your finger board !
I really enjoy your reviews. I'm thinking about buying an electric guitar and don't want to spend more than $250. I'm just a hobbyist and just have an inexpensive practice amp. You seemed to like the Firefly FFST you reviewed. I was thinking about buying their FFST Classis. Would you recommend this or another guitar? Thank you in advance and looking forward to more of your videos.
Ya ... I like the Classic FFST ... I have one in the white Relic with 3 singles and two with the HSS pickup setup. The relic one ..... they relic the hardware by sand blasting it.... So the tuning keys will need to be cleaned out and lubed ... Or just replace... Make sure ou spray clean the pots when you get it... Yep ... I have seen the blasting media in those as well... I cleaned my tuners and spray cleaned the pot and have had no problems with it .... The HSS Classic model.... Love the mid and neck pickups... The bridge pickup is a little to HOT ... for me... I lowered the pickup a little ( HELPS A LOT ! ) and I roll of the volume a little to clean it up. Its great for dirty blues if you lower the pickup. I think both guitars and the BEST BANG for your buck out there..... out of all the Fireflys I have ordered only one of them .... had a problem I thought was ..... well not good. My first FFDC in Trans-Red ... the grain of the wood was sideways ... the grain did not follow the neck line... In a painted guitar no problem ... you don't see it... but when you see the grain of the wood... and its sideways.... LOL So 1 guitar of of 12 or 13 that I have ordered... Oh and it played fine.... Great playing guitar! just the grain thing ... LOL So if your thinking about a Strat ... You cant beat the Classic FFST for the price. If you get the FFST with the HSS... If you ever want to make it a pro-level or a For Ever guitar.. Just install a SD -JB pickup in the bridge and a nice set of Gotoh locking tuners... and its Golden ! ! ! ! Thanks for commenting ! glad you liked the video's ! ! ! ! I have a NEW FIREFLY FFST video coming out in the next week.... FFST Modern with a FR bridge HH setup. Pickups in the guitar stock are good ! but its a FR bridge and for a starting guitar.... the FR bridge is hard to setup and work on. If you want a FR bridge guitar its a good one to get. Or They do make the FFST Modern in a HH pickup setup with a 2 point tremolo ... String though body. If ya want 2 humbuckers ! ! ! ! get that one..!!!!! strat body but more squared off on the corners... VERY NICE GUIATR !
So did you ever finish it? I for one would LOVE to see the final result! 😉 I also wonder, how is the neck joint? Is the joint as weak as water, like an SG? And is it neck heavy like an SG?
No... still waiting on me .. LOL I will start working on the next part soon... stay tuned ! not sure about the neck joint... Mine is still fine . no cracks or problems.
@@zuperdee I would not say its Neck Heavy.. Its not an SG .... LOL but it is a little heavier on the neck side... I don't have a problem with it.. sitting or standing.. My strap is a 2 inch wide .... for standing. This is a good guitar... that's why I'm hot rodding it... I wanted a Gibson double cut p-90... but 3,200 ... I'll pass !
@@DominionFretWorks I totally agree with you there-even with the upgrades you’re doing, you’re still probably getting at least 80% of the Gibson DC experience for about 10% of the cost! I’ve been thinking of trying one myself, NOT because Rick Beato plays one, but because it looks like it has a lot of the features of the SG like the lighter weight and high fret access, only in a more elegant form with better weight balance and a stronger neck joint.
Hello I was thinking about buying the same guitar "but red" and i cant find any information about neck thickness. Coud you please check it? Any way super nice vid!!!! Im looking forward to seeing it all done!
hey ... I will try to remember to measure the neck the neck time i'm at the shop... I love the neck.... its not a thick and chunkie neck... It feels like a thinner Gibson 60's neck... Thinner
I have Fret erasers.... I like those for doing touch up work. I think my set is 400, 800,1000,1600 and 2000 grit. The amount of time it would take with fret erasers to get the same end result.... WOW dunno but it would take forever... My set stops at 2000grit. witch is a rougher than the BLUE compound witch is EXTRA FINE. Doing a polishing like this is Glass Smooth Frets! Mirror Finish Frets. You just can't get the same results with Fret erasers. Like I said ... I use Fret Erasers all the time here. I use them in service work on guitars to match the fret finish to the stock guitar. If I use the fret kisser to level a single fret on the fret board .. I go back and recrown it. After I have the crown right I look at it and I may use steel wool 0000 grit then hit it with the fret easers. You have to match the other frets on the guitar and the fret easers are great at doing that job due to the grit levels you can get them in. Remember there is no RIGHT WAY.... I have seen good results from many different tools. Knowing how to use the tools you have the best way is key. I sometimes do things differently if I feel the job will be faster or better with this way or that way of doing it. Same with the tools.. I sometimes use this tool or that tool to get the same end result. It good to use different techniques and tools and become good at them. This opens up so many ways of doing something. In this video ... These frets are do so well that even a custom ordered guitar would not have this fret quality. It comes down to man hours... And most don't want to spend 1,000 dollars on a fret job. Witch if I count the hours to do a Level. Crown, and polish like this and clean up 10hrs labor.... You should do the NUT as you have done all this work to the neck.... Now is the time to do the nut. Then you have a string install and intonation. its a 1,000 dollar job once done. BUT this guitar will play better than any factory guitar due to the time put into the neck setup.
@DominionFretWorks wow, I didn't realize the cost involved. Most definitely need to learn to do this since that is a substantial amount to pay when I can just learn to do it myself and spend that on tools. Since the fret rocker linked to the channel has a string height guage, I'll be getting it first along with a notched straightedge and maybe a height guage later on in metric.
This is why a good hand crafted guitar is over 3,000.00 dollars its the hours of work to make a great instrument . I understand the cost..... I look for things on a 3,000 dollar plus guitar... If I see those things I know the value of it. This is also why so many pick on me when I review guitars.... I review all guitar the same. If you want to learn this stuff...
