What vehicle can I buy for £25 - and will it Start?

- Heya Good People of the Internet.
I've gone and done it again. Whilst doing my delivery job, I came across the lovely, old, and abandoned little Dump Truck, parked up in the corner of a garden. After chatting to the owner about what a shame it was, she offered it to me - for the pricey sum of £25 quid, so please enjoy this video on what happened next.
Lawrie - Presenter and brand new dumper owner
Dan 2 - Work colleague and stand in cameraman,
Matt - Secretly completely in love with the Dump Truck,
Geffers - Still trying to work out 'just why?'
Morgan - Seriously unimpressed.
A video edited by Lawrie.
I've got an Instagram! Keep track of what I'm up to with Lawries_Mechanical_Marvels
Discord Server - / discord
for some reason, this video screams '2008 home video of people doing stupid stuff in their garden on a shoestring budget' energy and I love it
The term: “I want one” comes to mind
Funny that, it happened to me!
Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels where did you get this, cause I’d like to look for one.
Get the compression sorted and it'll start easier.
Rebuild kits are still available brand new because those engines are still made in India.
dingle ball hone and new rings should be good enough
If they still make these engines an electric starter could be retrofitted couldn't it?
Absolutely yes. In the UK there's a huge following for this type of engine and they swap many helpful hints. You'll likely find that the correct engine casing part could be sourced too. The old single cylinder (sometimes more) engines were used in many applications as at the time they provided a bulletproof power source that could run reliably. Not overly powerful but plenty enough for that task. Go hunting Lister or Petter forums online and you'll find everything you need.
That's good to know guys, thanks!
@@killthebums yes I have the 2 cylinder version and it has a spot for a starter to go and I think this is the same for many of the smaller lister engines
I need that for my parties. Fill it with ice a beer and whatever else and drive it around haha
I had already thought it would be an amazing drinks cooler! Great minds thing alike!
Or drunken minds
I haven’t driven one of these for years!! Brings back so many memories. Especially when trying to start in the cold. The flaming newspaper would of been held over the air intake while they tried to start it in an effort to warm up the incoming air. This was of course pre glow plug days. The farm I worked on also had a larger 4WD 2 cylinder version that was a manual start as well. That took some cranking....
Ahhh, I heard that the last time this had run it involved flaming newspapers! Makes sense.
Trying to turn over 1 piston is bad enough - though my Ruston had a handstart too, that really would have been a lump to turn over!
Lawrie is like me. I’ll buy something random online and not tell my parents until it arrives, and then they just say what have you bought now and why.
My parents have just given up at this point
Me mum says the same thing every-time a parcel shows-up at her house, I live out in the bush so have stuff shipped to her place.
Oh, she's 86, I'm 65. You are always the child in their eyes!
Happy Hols all
The sense of sheer joy you get from Lawrie's face when the engine fires.
I was quite excited
Got to admit, you can't beat the sound of a 1 cyl Lister engine
Now the issue of your boss seeing why you needed the van that night...
I guess we'll find out if he's subscribed!
It sounds amazing!
Amazing!
I was waiting for either you or Matt to stop the thing and pull the dump lever, when the other was in the skip 😂🤣
You have no idea the temption.... 😂
Off load.....was more luck than judgement 😂, you couldn't do that again! That was truly an entertaining video and the best use of £25 I've seen in a long time.
I was pretty happy with it!
I'm sure I could do it again 😂.
I don't want to, but I bet I could 😂
@@lmm Yeah right! I'll bet you the £25 you couldn't 😂
Done! I'll have to go recover the ramps 😂
@@lmm Thats me £25 up this weekend then 😂
This is like the old TV show Salvage Squad, if it had absolutely no budget and far more disapproving looks.
I seem to get those looks alot...
@@lmm Get yourself a Tesla (or a milk float) if you want to get bobbyllew interested.
A milk float would be a load of fun...
i love it. i especially love the fact it takes towing it 1 and a half times around the yard to start and then it runs fine.
I would like to find a dump truck for 25 squids and throw in a trout .
Squids 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I like the idea of a fish based currency 😂
Great pick up, l have one as well. Early to mid 60,s with a twin lister engine and electric start. The tub had been removed and replaced with a fixed tray to be used as a maintenance vehicle. Very interesting and fun to drive, and its a great machine to move stuff around as well as a fantastic mobile work Bench. Great pick up ENJOY. 🚜😃
Oh you've got twice the cylinders 😂
@@lmm yes it is a rough rider liner with the twin cylinder lister diesel ford 3 speed gearbox, and solsbry diff. The electric start is a real bonus, starts first turn of the engine.. I intend to fix it all up and repaint it all, as u probably allready know they are an interesting vehicle to try and steer. But they are still a hell of lot of fun to drive. The only thing back home here in Australia it cost me 3000 dollars, but still well worth it. Love your video's keep it up cheers 😁🚜🇦🇺
The reason why it’s front wheel drive is because the dump truck part is in the front
Yes, he eventually worked it out 😂
It was built by Liner concrete machinery based in Gateshead Tyne and Wear bought out by an American company who closed it down and shipped every thing stateside. At the time of purchase liner were fabricating and testing one of their own designed tele handler fork lift .
Oh really? That's cool, sad they got shut down.
Thanks for the information!
Does that mean the apparently American designed Tele Handlers potentially are actually British?
@@stephenhunter70 Yup. The loss of engineering on Tyneside wasn't just ship building. There were many heavy engineering companies within that area which made everything from complete coal mine face working sets (roof supports, face cutters) but also electrical switch equipment, massive high voltage equipment, cranes etc. Speaking of cranes - Coles Cranes were based on Wearside. They developed the hydraulic extending boom - much like tele handlers have. You now see the connections with thinking now.
On the Team Valley Trading Estate in Gateshead, one factory alone employed over 6000 workers and made electrical switch and control boxes. All of those electrical control boxes were used throughout British industry. That site is gone - demolished. Every now and then a fun fair (not the town moor/hoppings) visits for a few weeks.
The loss of British manufacturing is massive.
@@jackking5567 Similar story to that of much of Australia. for example I grew up in Shepparton Victoria home of the SPC cannery when I was kid they exported canned fruit to France and I believe England, now France exports canned fruit to Shepparton Victoria. I'm not sure about if Newcastle NSW coal has ever been exported to Newcastle England however. I used to work in a company in Bayswater that made Dektite roof flashing's, they now come from China but unlike us they export them all other the world.
Thanks for sharing guys, the history is fascinating
I love Matt's genuine surprise that Lawrie actually bought a working vehicle. TBH for a one cylinder the engine doesn't actually sound that bad at all. I suspect the there's a bit too much play on the crank shaft as there's some odd pinking/knocking going on but all considered, that's minor in the grand scheme of things! Absolutely brilliant.
It seems to run well enough, so that'll do!
@@lmm Absolutely, I wouldn't dare touch any of the engine clearances if it runs. I've learned that lesson the hard way!
Pull the dump off, add on a pair of VW (or similar) seats, and give single cylinder, diesel powered tours of the garden. You’ll make that 25 back in no time! ;)
😂 😂 😂
We did think about making different skips for different tasks - a sofa included!
Yipeee, I was rooting for it to start and start and start.. didn't let us down.
Good old machine.
You may be able to tell, but I really was quite excited when it did fire up!
A man of simple, albeit hard-earned, pleasures.
It's the simple things in life that keep you happy!
This made me smile, there is presently three 27 litre RollsRoyce V12s ,tools and stuff in the back of my transit! I sometimes think I should of kept a log of what it has carried. It carried back to the UK a Westfield that crashed at the Nurburgring, A classic fighter jet cockpit, lots of motorbikes and a cannon! Quite eclectic!
Yes, you definitely should have - you're winning hands down in the what can you fit in a van competition!
What do you do with the aircraft parts?
The cockpit was converted into a simulator for guy who wanted his own Vampire jet but medically could not fly' next best thing and the Merlins are being collected and restored for a guy for a big project he has planned. I have joked that should convert one into an iPhone charger! The other option was to make a spoof video about using a 27 litre V12 fire breathing monster to power a generator to charge up a Nissan Leaf but don't think everybody would see the irony in it,
Hahahahahahah, oh the leaf idea would be amazing.
That's going to be some simulator!
Big project is either ominous or exciting 😂
That thing looks actualy useful to me...
Love it!
It's really practical! A sensible purchase!
@@lmm well ffor 25 quid it was sensible, evn if it didnt have an engine...😀
I am pretty happy at what we paid 😂
What kind of electric power washer was that? It had some really good pressure 👍🏻
The entertainment from all this was worth 25 quid. Looking forward to how this vehicle will be used. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
It's an absolute bargain!
Would love to see a video of her fully cleaned up and looking like she's just came out of the factory :)
It'll happen one day!
that unloading was class
I can't quite believe that it worked
Please do not forget about this project. This is great. Maybe make it run better and do a project on it being used for real
I've actually been chatting to a couple of people who would like to use it.
We'll get it all sorted at some point!
£25 . Grin Factor 10. I saw the thumb for this video and had to watch. Liked and subscribed. Have fun chaps.
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it!
Get the Restore Engine Oil additive. It will restore most of the compression, as long as the additive is in the oil.
Seems to be fine now we've chucked some sae 30 at it.
Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels Great! :)
I was so happy when you got that started. Great video.
Us too! Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Skip the hand crank....cordless drill..at least till it runs good then go back to hand cranking.
Certainly would be easier, but then you'd have none of the sense of achievement 😂
What drill do you have lol
Top work - gotta love a one pot Lister!! They sometimes have a priming cup to put Lube Oil into the combustion chamber - saves having to tow start it.
Best £25 I've seen spent!!
Now it's running, it seems to be pretty happy again. It's a lovely little thing
that is awesome guys think I found a new channel.
That's great to hear, glad you enjoyed it!
You should be invited to the Festival of Wheels when it's on next. :D
We would love that 😂
If Jupiter had been working we'd have taken her...
Although I think I was driving trains anyway..
"Does not work. With no way to get it back home." Classic! Perfect! But of course! Been there, done that, got it home.
It's the only way to buy vehicles!
This has to be one of my favorite videos of yours. I'm re-watching it again now haha
It was rather good fun!
This video was a shining example of how having faith in yourself and your toys, even when your friends don't but they stick by you to help you anyway, can create an unexpected winner, for £25! Similarly, having the daring to back your own mad skillz, if dubious judgement, riding it out of the van was very impressive. Brilliant stuff and endlessly entertaining!
Thank you, I'm sticking with to mad skills 😂
I'm pretty chuffed for £25, it's a great little thing 😂
Can't go wrong for £25, and it a runner and lots of fun... (Just subscribed after watching this)...
Thank you very much, I'm pretty happy with it, got 25 quids worth of enjoyment out of it anyway!
I am happy there is a human being like me on this planet who is so passionate about combustion engines(diesel , petrol and kerosene)😂 . I am a die hard feeler of manual transmission car and geared shunt locomotives.
I live in Hatfield.
Cheers.
it needs a couple spoonfuls of compression oil poured into the cylinder
What is compression oil is that a real thing or you're just playing?
@@seedlessgrapes2605 It is just engine oil you pour into the cylinder of a worn out engine to make enough compression for it to start, or into a severely dry cylinder to make a seal between rings and cylinder wall. You can get a dry cylinder just by letting it stand for a few years.
It works in three ways, it seals the rings and valves, it reduces the volume of the compression chamber, and a diesel will start on it.
But don't use too much, or you'll bend the connection rod!
It's exactly what we did!
@@leifvejby8023 okay cool I understand what you were saying I thought it was a specific type of oil that was to help fix compression
common thing we used to have on these singles was the decompression valve sticking because of not much usage or coked up nothing a bit of wd and some brake cleaner didnt sort tho
That could have been the issue, things improved when we added oil under the rocker cover.
@@lmm aye thats probably what it was possibly sticky injector also hence why she went with a tow get the oil pressure goin
Yeah, that all would make sense!
You are the most adorable madman I have ever had the pleasure of watching. 😂
Thank you very much!
Sometimes those engines have a primer lever on the fuel pump. I used to wind the engine to compression, with the de-compressor off, give it about ten pumps and then leave it for a couple of minutes to settle. It would wet the cylinder and make starting on a cold morning a lot easier. If it has one, it'll look like the lever on the top, but on the side of the fuel pump. Great vid, much enjoyed.
A couple of people have mentioned a priming pump, I can't seem to find one.
I think there is merit to your starting system however, as sometimes it won't go, leave it 5 mins and it'll fire up first swing.
Your a kid with a new toy. Good job great find. Now I want one.
That's a very good summery, I was very happy.
I didn't realise how much I wanted one until I got it!
Came across this video the other day watched it with interest.... instantly liked your way of doing things and your eccentric spirit.... I've looked back thru your videos and given the majority of them a watch and a like, keep up the good work
Thank you, glad you are enjoying the kind of things that we do. Loads more exciting stuff in the pipeline!
@@lmm great definitely subscribing
I subbed while watching your train videos, but man this was awesome. Please keep it up!
We'll do our best! Lots more lined up!
Despite what your friends may say, I think 25 quid is a steal.
I used to drive something very similar on site, back in the 80's.
Can't remember exactly what make it was but, it was a single cylinder "I believe a lister" diesel, hand cranked, front wheel drive, rear wheeled steering, manually operated bucket, just like yours, but no fancy bonnet like you have, and the decompression lever was very near the rear of the engine so's you could crank with one hand and flip the lever with the other once up to speed.
I do remember it had a model designation of being a D6.
Would love to pick one up in similar condition to yours, especially at the same sort of price. But that ain't gonna happen.
It's a really good little machine. I'm very fond of it, and it really was quite a deal
Awesome
I agree!
We have one of these at the Victoria Pumping Station I Volunteer at. It’s a steam and gas powered pumping station in Darlington called Tees Cottage Pumping Station. I show videos of it on my channel. We use a vehicle like this to transport large/heavy parts around the site and to take leaves from tea ground and dump them onto the river beds
They're very useful!
You're nuts. Love it. Best of luck with the dumpy. Will look forward to further videos and EVIDENCE that it runs...
Not holding my breath.
If you have a look in the What's Broken Now series you'll see it trundling around on a regular basis. It's a great little thing. I love it.
and I'm subbed, that damn laugh man lol.
Welcome aboard!
It's quite a laugh isn't it 😂
all great till you break the dudes lift and it cost $ 2000 pound to fix...lol
It's a lifty thing. It's meant to lift things right?
It was rather close to being a too larger counterweight...
Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels I am impressed with those wood planks
I was impressed too. Honestly wasn't 100% convinced by them 😂
That was really well done getting it out of the van.
Thanks, it really was an experience!
That's most excellent.
I'm glad you approve
Brilliant Lawrie! Ignore the naysayers and rejoice in the joy of classic plant. Hope it starts easier next time though. Best vid in ages, well done
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. I'm so very taken with the thing.
We'll cover it a bit more in What's Broken Now, but yes, it starts on the handle quite happily now!
Are there any naysayers around here?
This channel just gets better and better...
Apart from Geffers, Matt and Morgan? We have a fairly constant video disliker, apart from that, you guys are all lovely.
Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels can’t understand why people watch videos that they dislike? Ignore them, it could be they are too stupid to click the correct button. You were very lucky getting it home in the van. No one I know would have been that lucky. Might be worth seeing if it translates to the lottery ;-)
Ooh, you've got a troll! Don't feed the fecker and keep doing what you do. X.
You're doing it right brother. You're living like Nothing is Impossible. Cause Nothing is Impossible 👊👍
Just be happy and be amused by the simple things in life.

This needs to be a full rebuild series
Maybe in the future, for now it works, so we'll leave it alone 😂
I was told that I'm the only one to thinks like that then I see this. I found my UK brother. Much love from Florida 😎
You're not alone anymore my US brother!
Twenty years ago, my mother bought a two door blue Ford Fiesta for £25. A cheap run around and effective.
That's pretty good going, but then, 25 quid was significantly more back then.
Well, never mind. You could always stick it in the dump-skip-thingy at the front and drive it home. Oh wait....
Hehehehe. 😂
I’ve got a very similar Thwaites dumper to this which was £50 sounds exactly the same. Bump start it every time we use it !
Oh that's cool, this thing is pretty happy on the handle now!
Hilarious and victorious! Thank you for posting!
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed it!
It is really mint and you can seal the bucket with cement.
It looks like what they did. It didn't work very well.
It's had a new plate too.
I think it's time to build a new one
This is worth a little more than 25 quid. Its a vintage plant machine. 1950-60s you are looking at. Good peice of history. I take mine to vintage rallys and steam fairs and it usually gets quite a bit of attention because its somthing different.
Humpty here has been out a few times, proves itself very popular!
@@lmm they are just somthing different. Don't see much vintage plant stuff at rallys.
Yeah, it's certainly a bit different!
Sticking it in gear and then turn the engine with the starting handle is the easy way to move a non running vehicle
Thinking about it, yes that would have been much easier!
There is no better sound. I was a 15 year old lad working on the building site 1984. Lol.
I love how it sounds. The whole thing just makes me really happy!
@@lmm you still got it mate ?
The Dumper? Yes, it's joined my collection.
Me too do you remember you had to pull out a square half inch block with a quarter inch bolt in it on the injector pump for extra diesel when starting it 🤣 if only he asked an old lad local he could have saved all that swinging 😅😅 them petters was very easy started,, I still have my little nimbus I learned how to drive with it in 1985 i was 10 my dad made me drive it🤣 was busy
@@driveheronman4304 yes and if you weren't winding it fast enough the handle flew back and hit you in the chest!!!! Put one down a 6 foot hole once with me in the seat. Paddy went mental. Lol 😜
I hope you find a good use for this little piece of ingenuity tough little bit of equipment this is good luck with it
Oh we will, got a few things lined up!
Awesome i clapped so loud my dogs went into a fit of barking. 1st video i have seen of yours it was a great one
Glad you enjoyed it - we're pretty happy with the dumper and how the whole thing turned out!

love these old dumpers. not much to go wrong
It really can't get much more simple! It's a great little thing!
aahah im having so much fun watching this, cant believe it has so few views, cant believe offloading from the van worked like that, sheer skill demonstrated there
I'm going to remember that to quote at the others. Sheer skill. I like that. Glad that you enjoyed the video - feel free to share it about and help it gain more views 😂
The end of the video reminds me of Mr. Toads Wild Ride as he shouted and drove it around
Hahahahah we were a little bit excited 😂
I love it. I wouldn't need it but I'd still buy it.
That's exactly my thought process!
I would love to have a wife as keen on this stuff as you have . Lucky man
I'd love to have a wife too...
She killed that weed in the skip!
Geo Taker I’m going to assume that’s a joke.
Definitely worth restoring that’s a rare gem havin seen one of these in years
We'll get onto it at some point - it's nice just having a working vehicle! 😂
Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels I agree that’s a nice vintage piece
I wish I could find some thing like this for 25 bucks
I would make sure the compression release is working proper!
Along with the rest of the engine.
Seems to be!
after using these things for 3 years this is hilarious , try this 20 decompressed turn's to prime the fuel system then turn vigorously then throw over the lever mid turn , will start every time
I'll try that out! Thanks for the tip!
if you were to ad a small amount of petrol to the diesel it would lower the compression needed to combust this means it would be easyer to start and you would get slightly more power. but this is only to be done a couple of times as it will start to shorten the lifespan if the engine.
It starts quite happily now, but that's good to know for future attempts, thanks!
@@lmm nice
screw the dump truck, i want that mini loader xD
It was a pretty awesome bit of kit!

Self confessed madman. It's alot more fun than being normal 😂
When i was a kid back in the 70s i lived on a new estate/building site and that single cylinder "pop pop po po pop pop" brought back so many memories and the smell of the black smoke was awesome. Love it so splatter a bit of weld in the bucket, replacement seat and a splash of Brolac yellow paint i recon the engine might be ok if used to free up the rings good to go. :) Great vid

It doesn't need too much work, either!
second favorite vehicle u own lawrie
I love this thing!
It is without doubt one of my best purchases!
Excellent

Pint of diesel per day . Slow as heck and seriously lovely .powered wheelbarrow
Yeah, I can't believe how little it drinks! Very very slow, but absolutely fabulous!
Good job 😀. Are you going to restore it fully or keep it in 'used' cosmetic condition? Kind of like that look. Mechanical shabby chic 😉
Eventually we'll restore it back to green, but it's so far down the list of priorities at the moment 😂
That is a cool piece of tech
It's a great little thing!
At 1st i thought that dude who got out of the Toyota was A bird, your bird HAHAHA

Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels very feminine and he has a hair clip. Still subscribed.
Long hair is a massive pain when doing anything Mechanical 😂
Yes, subscribed because of this.
Glad you approve!
Add a quart or two of diesel to some cat yellow paint and spread it out several times till color shows, , grab a can of black spray paint from the local graffiti artist, go back to front around it with two or more stripes and call it a bumble bee. I see it working but that old Lister might need rings, not a easy job as the Lister has several small parts and pieces to git clean and working again. You might work a little on the theater work but all in all... fun was had
We are a little tempted to give it warning stripes, they might look quite cool.
It's running happily enough now, until it becomes an issue we'll leave it alone!
@@lmm Maybe the thing ran out of diesel and nobody realised that the injector pump needed re-priming. In any case I'm wondering if the "Leiston Works Railway" could use it to move ballast on that narrow railway corridor of theirs?
Your best video by far. Love it
Thank you. It was rather good fun!
@@lmm it looked it. Sore shoulder by the end of all that cranking I bet. Sounded sweet too
It is rather knackering!
For 25 quid I'd have bought it too and I've nowhere to store anything. Even as small as it is, it would still fill up half my garden, not to mention the fact I would have to dismantle it completely to get it through the house 😂
I really need to move, I want a shed to fill with bad life decisions....
Problem is, Sheds like ours are quite hard to find. We're so very lucky.
Couldn't say no for 25 quid!
The sketchiest 25 quids worth of fun possible that does not cause a hangover or a sexually transmitted disease.
These were common on large construction sites in the 1970. The ones I saw were all Thwaites Tuskers & the sites would usually be spectacularly muddy.
It is basically a powered wheelbarrow. Those little engines powered all sorts of useful site equipment from water pumps to concrete mixers.
It's a great little engine, and yes, basically a wheelbarrow 😂
I think it needs a bit of work. Never mind the owner appears to have some loose screws himself. It has the making of a nice two seat runabout, once you get and mount two seats. It is made to pull something. A new spark plug, some STP oil treatment and fresh fuel and it will run much better. You will also double its value, at least. Cheers!!!
It needs a little bit of work, it's not really that bad. Needs a new seat for sure. Service, new oil, clean air filter, and it'll be away.
The diesel seems pretty good, and thus the spark plug is also surplus to requirements.
I've already easily doubled its value as it runs now 😂 - besides its a star of the Internet 😂 😂
I did not know it was diesel. STP or good oil may still help. Since I am in New England rather than Old England, suggestions are all I can do to help. Sorry the commute is just not on. It's a Great video.
The suggestions are greatly appreciated! There's lots we don't know, and we'll take all the help and experience we can get!
Ah, it's not that badder commute 😂
Maybe a valve adjustment. Tight valves means low or no compression.
We just gave it a load of oil 😂
Awesome! That must be a diesel? Did a lot of jumping so might have missed that info.
Yeah, she's a single cylinder diesel. Great little thing.
looking forward to the resto attempts on this
It'll happen - though we'll get at least one tractor working first, it's useful having something that can tow in the shed!
I would restore that and use it as my daily driver !!!
I want to get it road registered!
Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels all u need here is an orange triangle on the back and she's "legal" lol
"that's how much fun you can have for £25"
And 3 days of sweat, tears and a tractor
Ah, but it's still giving a huge amount of joy!
