  • Here is our vintage 1967 Rough Rider Dumper made by Liner. Just put the cylinder head back on after a bit of an overhaul; valved ground in etc. The bump clearances were 6 thou out so i re- shimmed it to the correct clearances. Fuel tank cleaned out and repainted, all filters and sump cleaned out etc. Started instantly and runs sweet. Next step is to get chassis cleaned up and repainted.

Ah yes, we had an absolute wreck of one of these at a job I worked on a few years ago. 1 wheel drive, something of a mind of it's own, and the brakes were...underwhelming.
Always fun trying to start it on a cold morning when the oil was thick. At least the process warmed you up!
We used the dumper to carry grass clippings from one part of the site to another. The outward destination was a couple of fields away, up the most gentle of inclines, but with a bucket full of grass, it was a first gear haul all the way. The slightest bit of moisture in the ground would have you spinning the one driven wheel and resorting to travelling in reverse. But there was one joy, third gear.
The return journey, downhill and unladen, was sublime. Third gear engaged, an almost instant sense of 'wow, this is quick', low revs, cruising. Somehow everything seemed happier in third. The ride was less bumpy, the engine sounded content, you could sit back and relax. An all too fast return to base and the continuation of the rigours of the day.
I didn't really appreciate the old Roughrider at the time. It was old, rusty, hard to start. Years on though, I have a sense of admiration for the old girl.
I wonder if she's still running.

Runs well now. Bit more paint, chuck the panels and bucket on, get rid of the crack and it should be ready for a good days work.

Now that's my idea of a 'proper' four wheeler. Cheers

You are doing a great job on your restoration and love the video. We have a 2 cylinder dumper but unknown make and model but appears to be a Liner roughrider. Is there a site I can visit to get more details? I have engine, gearbox and a chassis numbers but no ID plate on the rear.

cool little machine you got there, have you considered registering for the road? look handy for collecting compost or manure for the garden

I have a rough rider liner with the two cylinder Lister, electric start.
The steering box has crapped itself. Would anyone out there know that steering box it uses, or a suitable replacement.
    Any information will be welcome
    Cheers Adam

I used a series 3 Land Rover steering box. Might need a little modification

Nice job; any idea what the brakes on this are from? I have got a later version of the same machine (I think!) and need brake bits.

+ChriX Builds Not sure, but if its just the shoes you can get them re lined. Other bits and pieces, like wheel cylinders are the same as used by benford dumpers. Is yours hydraulic or rod operated?? cheers, J

+Dieseljonnyboy mine's rod operated. Main problem is the back plates and the cylinders are shot, no good at all. Will try and get a video up on my channel as it goes back together.

+ChriX Builds how is the dumper going?

It's a nightmare! Had to pretty much remanufacture the brakes using Land Rover handbrake backplates with the centres machined out and the old ones grafted back in. The wheel bearings and all the oil seals were shot too. Nevertheless the front axle is now back together, need to get the rear freed up and the engine back in and we might be getting somewhere!
