It would be nice if you listened to her singing this song any year up until 2013, to understand how long she did preserve her voice

Cyndi has more attitude than most of the music industry combined. :P She's one of those singers who hasn't lost a thing over the decades.

Cyndi lost her voice earlier in her career (before she became really famous) and subsequently went to one of the best vocal coaches in New York to learn how to sing properly without damaging her voice. She already had an edge on a lot of pop singers, who tend to do this later in their development.
Also, as a fan her entire career, I've noticed that Cyndi BARELY uses headvoice/falsetto. She is a belter who has learned to take her chest voice incredibly high.
I've seen her live several times, and she has tremendous vocal power.

    Cyndi is the best!!
What about, "When You Were Mine" live presentation in AMA 1985 !?
Later that night she'd record "We Are the World" and the rest is history...

Cyndi's performance of "When You Were Mine" (originally written by Prince) is fantastic. She sang this shrieking high note midway through the song that powerfully conveys the narrator's anguish over the loss of a love.

I like this. Cyndi had a really good run vocally, she was able to do a lot for a very long time. I notice a lot of singer's voices change as they get older. Cyndi Lauper also has spoken about how she believes her Psoriasis has not only caused swelling on the outside of her body but also swelling on her vocal folds. In this day and age, she sings her high songs about a whole step lower, but she sure did try and keep it up as long as possible! Who knows, maybe one day she will overcome what ales her voice. I love Cyndi, and I really appreciate your vocal analysis 🙂

YES! Cyndi is still fantastic. And she has done some different styles in her later years.

I think others may have pointed this out, but during the 2013 tour, Cyndi was dealing with a horrible outbreak of psoriasis. Her whole body was covered with psoriasis and she was quite ill. Her voice isn't as strong as it was, but it's still way better than many of today's popular singers (who can't actually sing live at all).

I'd like to know how she makes some of those interesting sounds she does like at the end of All Through the Night and also in When You Were Mine, also how she sings in a lower register (totally the opposite of Girls) like when she sings I Drove All Night, or those Long notes she holds like at the end of I'm Gonna Be Strong, etc, she does a lot of different things.

    1. Cyndi uses a balloon to stretch the vocal cords, especially on a song like girls. 2. in 1994 Cyndi re-recorded Girls .. singing it in a more reggae tempo, then in 2010 gave it a Blues version. Sometimes (in recent or past 10yrs) she uses elements from all 3 phrasings. In the video you are reviewing at the end I think it's the pop and blues phrasing she is using thus the high and low differences. There is a compilation video out in UA-cam land titled Cyndi Lauper Best Live Vocals. that should give you a better time line of her performances throughout the years. Cheers.

Some notes: She was thirty in the first clip, thirty three in the second clip. in 1978 she blew up her voice, three doctors told her would never sing again. She found a voice teacher named Katie Agresta who rebuilt her voice and taught her how to protect it. Cyndi has said that being a singer is like being an athelete, the older you get the harder you work to maintain what you have.
I suggest you listen to "Cyndi Lauper, Best Live Vocals", it covers up until age sixty five or so. She toured with Rod Stewart earlier this year, just before she turned seventy. I don't think she has lost much.

Cyndi Lauder developed an auto immune disease in 2013 aged 59, before that her voice was very well preserved. She had been using the same vocal coach for 40 years and so it’s sad to hear some of the decline now that I don’t think would’ve happened without help problems

    • @Planetcharr
      @Planetcharr 8 місяців тому

agree, the psoriasis did a number on her singing; but she still pulls forward. I've noticed a different vocal delivery on UA-cam when she was performing at the film festival. Saw some difficulty pushing the notes out or maybe she was tired that evening, or maybe it was a crappy recording . "Oh, Dolores" is punky Cyndi so there was no need for vocal acrobatic performances for that song.

    • @reedthompson8365

She felt like a bit of a "guilty pleasure" during the 1980s; the slightly cartoonish image she created for herself belied her great voice. For instance, in her autobiography she mentioned that film producers persuaded her to change the title of her song "Good Enough" to "The Goonies R Good Enough," thus making an excellent song seem silly by associating it with the goofy children's movie in which it was featured.

Poor song choice because her voice is incredible when holding notes and hitting it! Try comparing I'm gonna be strong throughout the years. you won't be disappointed ! She's so much more than that song. A real Actual Singer

Actually when she sings she tries to make every performance different. And every concert i watched this song was the 12th or 13th song in line. Some singers would exhaust their voice by then but not cyndi.
