He did co-write the song and worked on the demo for a week before it was actually recorded when the rest of the singers took time from their already busy schedules and instead of heading home or to a after-parties showed up to learn their parts, rehearse and record in a matter of hours after the American Music Awards that year. As I recall, the song's chorus with the entire group was recorded first. Then majority of the group left when the selected solo parts where selected to record the individual lines. Everything except Bob Dylan and the later part by Ray Charles was recorded before daylight the next day after the American Music Awards. The extra parts were recorded a week after.

And Michael was very busy at the time too so it just shows his own work ethic added to everyone else's. Admirable.
Cyndi's execution kept getting better until it reached the absolutely perfect line we all know, and the "Yeah Yeah YEAH" at the end only made it even more amazing.

After watching the documentary that came out last night, it makes sense. Michael wrote the song (along with Lionel) that’s why it was easy for him, he played a major part in creating the song. Also y’all gotta realize how hard it is for alot of these artists to sing like this. Watch the documentary and you’ll have a different perspective on this
Yup, MJ and Lionel wrote it and were really comfortable with the notes that needed to be sung. Huey had to adapt and take his voice to a place he wasn't used to. Knew a lot about the song already, but watching the documentary made me appreciate Huey way way more and loved how hard he tried until he got it just perfect.
Yeah. I've seen this before in my career. Her performances are about emotion, connection and raw talent. And some semi-improvised parts to add the singers' personal touches. It's like when you make a movie or television show, you take several "takes". In the end, you choose the one that fits best. Michael's section did not contain a harmony with any other singers. It was a single straightforward melody. There was nothing to experiment with. If you didn't notice, everyone was singing in key the entire time. There were no "wrong" notes. But there was room to experiment on who got what note in the harmony. Part of it is that you "don't know those singers". Cyndi Lauper certainly was not straining to hit any of those notes, though she did add some rasp to her voice for effect. It was effortless for her, too. And she was light and funny. No sweat.

Plus he was a dancer, so sometimes it wss better to lipsynce songs like Smooth Criminal, Jam, Scream and so on

I later read that Quincy was annoyed at her because of the bracelots and stuff, but I thought she nailed it on her first take. I was never a big fan of the guy before her who not only dropped out of key but also came in too close to the mic so that when Cindi had her turn, she had to wait for him to get out of her way. I thought it was Huey who did more to f*ff up the recording than CL.
Watching this made me love love love Steve Perry! He was so spot on, so supportive, and just a talented artist amongst the most talented of artists! He really stood out to me!❤

You could really hear how she developed her part. Every take was better than the previous one. In the final take her timing how she came in and the high notes at the end were perfect and give the track the energy that it needed.

DH couldn’t disagree more. They added Cyndi to the track which is exactly why she was there, to perform as her fans expected. But up to that point she was ‘stifled’ by suggestions from others. But the artists that seemingly appear to ignore the suggestions of the producers, or are so confident in their own talent and performance they do their own thing, suddenly shine on the track and make you take notice. DH couldn’t disagree more. They added Cyndi to the track which is exactly why she was there, to perform as her fans expected. But up to that point she was ‘stifled’ by suggestions from others. But the artists that seemingly appear to ignore the suggestions of the producers, or are so confident in their own talent and performance they do their own thing, suddenly shine on the track and make you take notice.
